The System is Fine

When you check the boxes for a head coach on Paul Chryst, there is one you can fill in completely. Then slap a coat of paint and epoxy to be sure it is never going to be unchecked. Bland, predictable, non-judgmental coachspeak.

The defense has been a decaying, desecating hot mess for the last three games. Does Coach Chryst think more time needs to be spent working with the defense. Helping the coaches and players? Probably. But you won’t get him to admit it.

Despite the lopsided nature of the box scores, Chryst said Monday that he doesn’t plan to spend more time focusing on the defense this week as the Panthers prepare for Syracuse in their home finale.

At his weekly news conference, Chryst initially declined to answer when asked if he would change how much time he spends in defensive meeting rooms this week, only noting how the Panthers need to improve defensively.

But when pressed, he said he still believes consistency is the best approach.

“You’re going to be watching film and, every week, you make comments,” Chryst said. “I’m going to make sure I’m doing that weekly. It’s no different than how you coach and interact with your players.

“You better coach them all the time and not just wait for the scoreboard to dictate when you’re going to coach or help or do something.”

Chryst added that it is a bit puzzling to see the defensive problems in the past three weeks, given that the unit played well early this season but has struggled to maintain that consistency he preaches.

“There have been some moments where I think we’ve been playing really well, and certainly some moments when we haven’t,” Chryst said.

The system is in place. There is no problem with the system. All will be well, as long as the team continues to follow the system.

Of course it is s steaming pile of crap. Chryst knows it. The media that had to hear and report it knows it. Everyone reading it knows it.

But it is surprising to no one. Short of having some sort of psychotic break, Chryst was never going to spout the unvarnished truth. He wasn’t going to pin the blame on the defense. He was never going to throw DC Matt House or the players under the bus.

Chryst is all about presenting a front of an even keel and consistency. Winning and losing, the coachspeak would be about making improvements and being more consistent as a team.

It is tolerable bullshit when the team is winning — or at least not tanking — but it becomes an additional source of frustration when the team is obviously reeling. When one side of the ball is such an obvious hot mess. When there isn’t any consistency or improvements — instead regression and collapse.

Liars figure and figures lie.

I hope no Pitt people are involved in this scam.

OPG,

The tobacco industry spent millions to convince us that cigarettes don’t cause cancer, the oil industry spent millions to convince us that lead in gasoline wasn’t a health hazard.

Would it surprise you that the wealthiest people in the world would not try to protect their industry and convince us us that first, there is no Global Warming and maybe there is but we are not causing it.

Have you ever heard of Love Canal, you must have been in Pittsburgh when the air was unbreathable, and fish wouldn’t live in the rivers.

If you think that man can’t do things to harm the planet and his fellow man, I ask you to remember Hiroshima, and more lately Fukashima.

The fact is that man already controls the ability to blow up the planet.

So if you think it is not a problem that many beaches are not safe to swim in, and that the pile of plastic refuse as big as Rhode Island in the Pacific is fine, that is your prerogative. While you are looking at earth from the satellite, take a look at the glaciers. By the way, that shit load of blue you talk about is getting a lot warmer and a lot more polluted. Maybe you think the Exxon Valdez and the BP disaster are great, just collateral damage. Our earth is big, it can absorb these things.

Those tree huggers are weak let’s go vacation in the UKraine, I know a nice quiet site by an old power plant.

One of our esteemed congress men says he doesn’t worry about global Warming cause God is looking over us. Others are waiting for the Rapture, so they don’t have to worry about anything.

But there are plenty of man-made things that can kill us quickly or slowly (cancer causing environmental hazards)

Marie Curie is a good example of someone that was doing a good thing but did not survive the process.

I agree that the environmentalist can go to far, we can’t save every insect or species on the planet. We definitely need energy but I am glad I live in a country with an EPA (Nixon by the way), that looks out for our welfare and not China that turned off all their pollution to host a summit.

I hope man is smart enough to avoid shooting himself in the foot or much worse.

Call me a tree hugger, it does not offend me.

Being at least 3-4 times worse than Chernobyl and still ongoing and getting worse daily.

The media certainly has totally forgotten about.

as u say that Forbes is slanted.

And yet u reference The Guardian.

from wiki:

Founded in 1821 by John Edward Taylor in Manchester with backing from the non-conformist Little Circle group of local businessmen, The Manchester Guardian replaced the radical Manchester Observer, which championed the Peterloo Massacre protesters.

The paper currently identifies with social liberalism.

In recent decades The Guardian has been accused of biased criticism of Israeli government policy.[61] In December 2003, columnist Julie Burchill cited “striking bias against the state of Israel” as one of the reasons she left the paper for The Times.[62] A leaked report from the European Monitoring Centre on Racism cited The Economist’s claim that for “many British Jews,” the British media’s reporting on Israel “is spiced with a tone of animosity, ‘as to smell of anti-Semitism’ … This is above all the case with the Guardian and The Independent”. The EU said the report, dated February 2003 was not published because it was insubstantial in its current state and lacking sufficient evidence.[63][64] Greville Janner, former president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, has accused The Guardian of being “viciously and notoriously anti-Israel”.[65]

Fukashima is another great example of man not being as smart as he needs to be. Report in the news yesterday about pollution from it reaching the west coast. None of this stuff is black and white, but GE certainly happy it is off the front page.

Comment by gc 11.18.14 @ 6:49 pm

Absolutely Emel, point-counterpoint. That is the problem these days there is no news without bias.

My God! Is this what we have been reduced to? Started watching the Chryst press conference sober. Turned it off and drank a jumbo martini. I thought maybe I should try again in a better frame of mind. Chryst looks like lifeless dumb fu*k drunk or sober. There is no hope without a new AD.

All I can find is a transcript of it on Pitt’s website.

Climate change, nuclear accidents, Ebola, rampant pollution, all of a sudden a sucky Pitt football season doesn’t seem nearly as important.

And just when we think that we’ve identified all the players in this convoluted drama of human existence the cosmos will then decide to shake this vermin we fondly call humanity off the back of Mother Earth to reboot the evolution of life on our tiny home planet with a bullseye hit with some messily sized little asteroid just a a couple miles in diameter. As Porky Pig was fond of saying while waving good-bye, “That’s All Folks”!

Time for another drink.

Comment by Dr. Tom 11.18.14 @ 8:04 pm

Look, Al Gore invented the internet so reasonable men could debate the inadequacies of a football program. Where would we be without the internet on this site alone.

No Monday morning puke fest. No groundswell to get rid of Pederson. Would we be sending letters in to Chas and Reed?

There needs to be some global warming under Steve Pederson’s arse right about four weeks ago in my opinion. Now if you want to talk about offense and Gore, than Demetrius is my all-time favorite Gore, weapons and all.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 11.18.14 @ 8:12 pm

Forgot algore invented the internet and not the Defense Dept. my apologies.

First time all year, Pitt is not listed in the bowl projections.

All 38 Bowls. Equals 76 teams and adding the 4 in the playoff equals 80 teams.

How many play again ?

ESPN must think there are enough of us fools in New York and Western Pa. who will watch it.

For they even put it on at 3:30 instead of what you would think, with a 4-6 terrible team and an even worse 3-7 Syracuse team, would be a guaranteed Noon start.

The byline for the game should be, tune in to watch Pitt losers of 6 of the last 7 games….battle…Syracuse, losers of 7 of the last 8 games,

Somebody has to Win. Right !!!

Saturday at 3:30 only on ESPNU. (thank god)

Terlit Bowl……

I will be watching and cheering for my guys to win!

Defensively, and without knowing squat about the Syracuse offense, I suggest 8 in the box and run blitz on every play. Get down and distance on our side.

gc, God bless you and I hope he/she helps you to see the light. There was a time when I, too, was blinded by ideals.

Then I had to go out and make a living.

Remember nature/life is cruel. Besides man made problems (man does cause a lot of problems) nature produces even greater disasters on its own. You did point out a few yourself or is it the fault of global warming?

For now, I just want a new Range Rover before Obama takes the rest away from me.

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 11.18.14 @ 9:27 pm

Adam McClean a 4 **** DE decommited on Tuesday from Perv U. A major loss for Franklin.

McCClean is from Maryland and if he ends up with Randy Edsal it would be a crying shame to see that dirtbag land a player we need in the worst way. This year will cost us recruits next year too and I fear that we will see some key players decommit this year…it could get very ugly.

Comment by isnore99 11.18.14 @ 9:49 pm

Ladies and gentlemen we just spoke about Al Gore-a man equally as boring as PC. We are indeed at an all time low. Please, for the love of manbearpig (South Park reference) can we just fire House-hire Durkin or Orlando and become relevant again?!?!!?
I’ve said it a million times-all those that wanted Wanny gone I hope you all are happy.

Comment by John 11.18.14 @ 9:50 pm

OPG, I hope you get your Range Rover. You are right, nature is cruel enough, without man making it worst. Didn’t realize Obama could get at your off shore accounts. LOL

Comment by gc 11.18.14 @ 9:52 pm

What’s the chances Whitehead is recruiting McClean?
Early playing time, position of great need. Not a difficult schedule. Play in a conference where you can compete for Coastal Championships first!

This is a better sell than the big10 can give anyone at maryland or psu. They will never compete against osu and michigan state and michigan. Being third every year at best in their division, or matriculating to Pitt where you can be number 6 or number 1 in your division due to parity. I can wish, can’t I.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 11.18.14 @ 10:15 pm

McClean shaved Penn State on his head last year and now he has .decommited. If this story is true doesn’t Pitt have enough problems.

Now that is a game plan for our D that could work well – I believe Cuse is down to their 3rd string QB – can anyone confirm that?

Love the Archie Bunker bowl reference – why not, Meathead will be coaching our D.

Comment by Erie Express 11.19.14 @ 5:33 am

House will be back for the simple fact that no sane coach would join a staff which may not be around in a year.

Chryst ignored the defensive side of the ball (and QB) in recruiting.

Comment by JohnRamella 11.19.14 @ 9:58 am

JohnRamella – Going to respectfully disagree on a few points. First, everybody can see that House coming back would be tragic, and you may be right of course that he will be back anyway, but there are always candidates out there willing to take risk, especially for the right amount of money, so this is more about the admin’s commitment to succeed than about Chryst’s predicted tenure (which is why we’re worried).

And you can argue with Chryst’s recruiting success, but he has not ignored the QB spot in terms of recruiting. He got 2 last year ( 1 decommited last minute) and another QB this year. Ultimately, the team is going to need better on field success to get better players, or a better recruitier on the staff, however the qb position has not been ignored.

Comment by 1618mt 11.19.14 @ 10:50 am

House will be back because Pitt will not pay to replace him nor does Chryst want him replaced.

Chryst has ignored QB only by recruiting a bunch of 3-star stiff’s. He actually tried getting another one… but a 2-star. He was in Wisconsin visiting family and offered a MAC-recruit. LOL

Comment by JohnRamella 11.19.14 @ 11:08 am

There’s a difference between ignoring and not being a great recruiter, we have the latter.

The House decision may not be up to Chryst.

Comment by 1618mt 11.19.14 @ 3:16 pm

Most people who want Chrust replaced feel he can’t keep trying the same thing on defense and failing. I’d like to know if they feel the same way about continously changing coaches every 3 years?
