Okay, Penn State-Pitt for the first time since 2005.

7:30 start time and airing on ESPNU.

This isn’t the injury-ravaged squad of a year ago. Nor is it the bottom feeders of the previous, what 3-4 years? No one really cares. Not in Penn State. Definitely not outside of it.

Tonight, though, they care.

This one has a chance to be a good game.

I really wish I knew what this “rivalry” used to mean. Must have been fun if people still care so many years after it ended.

I hope they get WVU back on the schedule in something so I don’t lose the only rival I’ve ever known in my Pitt fandom.

Comment by Chris 12.03.13 @ 6:33 pm

Basketball was never a real rivalry, they were never very good, and no one wanted to travel to Happy Valley in the winter. Not sure they will ever be a factor in bball, can not see why a recruit would have much interest.

Comment by Jimbo 12.03.13 @ 6:55 pm

Pitt and Duquesne was the BB rivalry, basically because it matched high school teammates against each other. Nearly all of the players from both schools were from Western PA back then.

Comment by wbb 12.03.13 @ 7:27 pm

Pitt looks uninterested…

Comment by Jackagain 12.03.13 @ 7:37 pm

Fans say differently about the rivalry. Lots of cheering for Ped state.

Comment by Pendlum 12.03.13 @ 7:38 pm

did you notice that DJ is playing the 2?

Comment by wbb 12.03.13 @ 7:40 pm

Go Cuse…clean Crean’s clock.

Comment by Jackagain 12.03.13 @ 7:41 pm

Say what you want about butts in the seats but I would rather the 2 beside me were open instead of hearing these ladies talk about the cookie cake their friend made with “ho hos and jimmies”

Comment by Pendlum 12.03.13 @ 7:49 pm

Great….the Pens are stinking up the ice and Pitt can’t put away Ped State…

Comment by Jackagain 12.03.13 @ 8:06 pm

Pitt is looking like crap. No offense at all. Defense is ok hokding Pes st to 26 but should be torching them.

Comment by Pendlum 12.03.13 @ 8:10 pm

Pitt playing like shit, hoisting up garbage.
Wright and Petterson I can never count on.

Comment by Justin 12.03.13 @ 8:14 pm

Very tentative Pitt

Comment by Frank MD 12.03.13 @ 8:24 pm

we’ll see what this team is made of now

Comment by wbb 12.03.13 @ 8:24 pm

It’s a good thing Pitt is making their FT’s because their offense is putrid right now. Better get it going in the 2nd half.

Comment by Nick 12.03.13 @ 8:30 pm

Cam’s hand big issue cost points. Someone underneath needs to step up. Zanna usually disappears in situations like this. If Patterson wakes up we’ll win

Comment by Old School Panther 12.03.13 @ 8:34 pm

I say Robinson is the key.

Comment by steve1 12.03.13 @ 8:37 pm

If we can limit Frazier in the second half we’ll be good. Kids got literally half Penn State’s points. Key in on him in the second half and put this shitty team away.

The rest of Penn State is shooting 29%. It’s JUST that one kid.

Comment by MikePITT 12.03.13 @ 8:38 pm

These refs are killing Pitt…

Comment by Jackagain 12.03.13 @ 8:44 pm

Pitt shooting 30% not getting it done.

Comment by alcofan 12.03.13 @ 8:46 pm

Pitt needs someone to step up and take over the game. Frazier, Newbill, and Taylor all have more points than anyone on Pitt’s team. PSU is supposed to be worse on defense yet Pitt can’t do anything. Take control. The ACC will be better than this.

Comment by Pendlum 12.03.13 @ 8:46 pm

Zanna didn’t disappear there.

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.03.13 @ 8:48 pm

There you go Zanna

Comment by Nick 12.03.13 @ 8:52 pm

Looks like Zanna wants to take over…

All of PSU’s starters might foul out….

Comment by Pendlum 12.03.13 @ 9:02 pm

Comment by Pitt Dad 12.03.13 @ 9:05 pm

Comment by Pendlum 12.03.13 @ 9:11 pm

I don’t like Pitt tonight with Robinson in the game.

Comment by Jackagain 12.03.13 @ 9:14 pm

Every time Newkirk drives a foul is called. Pitt doesn’t drive at all

Comment by Pendlum 12.03.13 @ 9:15 pm

Is the Zoo actually making a cheer about “the showers?” With Penn State?

Comment by Lou 12.03.13 @ 9:40 pm

Fans got their moneys worth tonight. Game closer than the final score.

Comment by alcofan 12.03.13 @ 9:43 pm

‘Hit the showers’ pretty subtle

This game was way too close for comfort but you have to give it to the Nits … they came to play. (much more than I can say for Pitt in the 1st half)

Comment by wbb 12.03.13 @ 9:43 pm

Nice to hear the Penn State Sucks cheer.

Comment by Frank MD 12.03.13 @ 9:43 pm

Good win. Obviously, this team has flaws. Dixon has got to stop scheduling the patsies he loves so much. Other than the upcoming Cincy game, there’s really nothing to see with Pitt basketball until the NCS game on Jan. 4. And that’s Dixon’s got-to-get-to-20-wins ego keeping his team from growing.

Comment by TonyinHouston 12.03.13 @ 9:44 pm

Wow. Gotta be able to handle a slight 170lb. guard from Happy Valley. On the flip side, at least THIS Pitt team can shoot FTs. Don’t discount the importance of that in the games that matter.

And I honestly think we beat them in football this year (despite our shortcomings) had we played, so…H2P!

Comment by Iron Duke 12.03.13 @ 9:51 pm

Class was Pitt scheduling a university that to this day thinks its God’s gift to the world. Pitt could have said NO. The former administration covered up child rape over a decade to protect their brand and legacy of their coach. Let’s never forget that.

I hear the Zoo was great. And the Pete was rockin giving Pitt a real home field advantage. Too bad we can’t say that about Heinz. But Heinz isn’t intimate or designed for the college game like the Pete is. And it helps to have a good product with a very good head coach and an ace assistant in Slice.

Comment by TX Panther 12.03.13 @ 10:02 pm

I saw Franco in the crowd…..did he bring his JoePa cutout with him?

Comment by Jackagain 12.03.13 @ 10:09 pm

Very good win, PSU will win a lot of games this season. But Wow…what the hell happened to the Pitt basketball fans? The empty seats are all the evidence you need to see to know that the Pitt vs PSU rivalry is long gone…Bring back WVU and the Pete will be full….BTW, flipping channels and I see packed houses at Duke, Minn, and Iowa.

Comment by HbgFrank 12.03.13 @ 10:14 pm

OK, maybe not so packed at Minn, but not as empty as the Pete

Comment by HbgFrank 12.03.13 @ 10:15 pm

Refs made this a closer game than it had to be. I thought the “new rules” would make it harder for the refs to effect the outcome. Not tonight! It was hit or miss whether a foul against PSU was called. No question, it was Penn State crew!

Comment by Old Pitt Grad 12.03.13 @ 10:22 pm

I’d rather play Nova and UConn. Maybe even G Town over these Pedo Bears…I mean Nitters. I hope Pitt made the showers nice and cold for them.

Comment by TX Panther 12.03.13 @ 10:31 pm

Off topic….Ron Vanderlinden resigned from PSU today, Pitt would be wise to pick him up. Perhaps ad our co-DC

Comment by HbgFrank 12.03.13 @ 10:32 pm

Have him bring along Bradley.

Comment by TX Panther 12.03.13 @ 10:36 pm

Nice win now let’s not play them again for another 8+ years as this isn’t a rivalry. They gave us their best shit and still came up empty by nearly double digits. Not worth our efforts in the future. Lord help us if we were forced into playing them again and worse if we had to travel to Unhappy Valley.

Comment by Pitt fan in Atlanta 12.03.13 @ 10:39 pm

Might have to diss TZ every game, kid came up big. We had no poise until we played with urgency late 2nd half. Zone really bothered peds and Wrights hand cost us 6-10 points. Hope they give him time to heal. Young has the potential, just needs playing time. Thoroughly enjoyed this game, love beating these guys anywhere anytime in anything.

Comment by Old School Panther 12.03.13 @ 10:44 pm

This was a great win! We had nothing to gain but a lot to lose!

HTP! It is great to be 8-0! Now let’s get ready for Loyola. I like this team!

Comment by Jason 12.03.13 @ 10:45 pm

TonyinHouston, so Dixon shouldn’t try to win 20 games? And even if you replaced the 4 easiest teams on Pitts schedules and gave them losses to top teams (which no one does) he’d have basically the same number of 20 win seasons. Why bother being a Pitt basketball fan if you think the head coach cares more about winning 20 games than getting his team better for March.

Chances are that more often than not Pitt is going to get stuck playing PSU in the Big 10 – ACC challenge. So I say schedule PSU and then you will pick up another good team in the challenge.

Game wise crowd was loud and best one if the year. I always say season ticket holders who attend should get some credit when it comes to seat locations. I really like the minutes Newkirk gave. Zanna had a monster game. And PSU is going to be in almost every game this year because they have two really good guards.

Comment by Wardapalooza 12.03.13 @ 11:42 pm

I thought this was a pretty good game to watch.

Penn State doesn’t have a bad team. I don’t care what that Frazier’s weight or height is, he’s a good ballplayer.

Good win. Could have folded, didn’t, maintained and won.

Comment by Dan 12.04.13 @ 12:04 am

h2p

Comment by MikePITT 12.04.13 @ 12:06 am

As for the rivalry.

No, there never was a Pitt-PSU rivalry in hoops.

However, the crowd and the students showed more pep than they have for Duquesne or Robert Morris.

This is certainly coming from the actual Pitt-Penn State school’s rivalry, and from the Pitt-Penn State football rivalry.

The Oakland Zoo chanting “Penn State Sucks” certainly shows, that the rivalry of schools or football, is certainly not lost on 18-22 year olds.

So, when the football teams meet in a couple years, and play 4 years in a row, the rivalry will become intense once again.

It’s a shame, that they’ll have Hackenberg and O’Brien, and we’ll still be 6-6.

Comment by Dan 12.04.13 @ 12:08 am

Smug Smile Steve had to be steamin’ hearing the kids chant “Penn State sucks”.

Suprised he didn’t come down and grab the microphone and scold them.

He’ll worry about shit like that, but the football team being forever mediocre, nah!!!

Comment by Dan 12.04.13 @ 12:13 am

I really like what I’ve been seeing Josh Newkirk lately. I think he’ll see more, not less, minutes as the team heads into ACC play.

Comment by Mailman 12.04.13 @ 12:26 am

This was a weird game. Dixon was scrambling because so many starters couldn’t hit their shots.

* Young was 0 for 5 from the floor and only played for 16 minutes.

* Robinson’s shot was off until the end, and he only played for 23 minutes.

* Perhaps because of the injured hand, Wright was only 2 for 7 from the floor.

The whole team was out of sync, perhaps because so many starters were struggling.

Comment by Howard 12.04.13 @ 7:13 am

well give the Nits some credit, they came to play … not sure I can say that about Pitt which didn’t look confident at all throughout the 1st 2/3rds of the game

Comment by wbb 12.04.13 @ 7:29 am

Frazier was a one man wrecking crew last night, he’s a player. The Pitt BB team came out as flat as the football team did against Miami. I’m sure glad that Zanna woke up in the second half.

This team got tested tonight. They showed their metal in the second half and closed it out like a top 25 team should have against lesser competition.

I hope they file this one away for future reference, because if they start off games like this when they’re playing against the likes of Syracuse or Duke, they will get their heads handed to them before halftime.

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.04.13 @ 7:36 am

Yes, give the Nitwits some credit. They do have two stud guards. But, I’d rather play some old Big East schools than Pedo State each year. Football is a different story. Can’t wait until ACC play.

Comment by TX Panther 12.04.13 @ 8:01 am

Was at the game. The crowd was very vocal and the Zoo rocked it last night.

What is the deal with Wright’s hand? Was wondering what was going on with him. He was just off.

Things I liked:

- Zanna and Patterson wanting the ball late in the game
- Newkirk giving some monster minutes. Played under control. He is going to be good.
- The way the team weathered a pretty piss-poor first half and early second half to finish strong
- Artis’ aggression on both ends of the floor
- Dixon FINALLY shaking it up a bit on D, particularly late in the game, going to a double team high up on the floor that led to a turnover and Robinson layup that pretty much cemented the game & going with the lineup throughout the latter part of the 2nd half that matched up best with what the Nits had to offer.

Things I didn’t like

- Too much hesitancy on offense throughout much of the game, reminiscent of the previous 2 years and not how they had been playing up until the Duquesne game
- Young: He looks confused. Based on their play, there is no doubt in my mind that Artis should be getting Young’s minutes. Really like his game.
- Robinson: I am starting to dread every time I see him begin to penetrate, because invariably it will mean he stops just inside the foul line, in a near panic, looking to pass it back out

Take away the like 6-7 missed layups and this was a much closer game than it should have been. PSU has a respectable team, though, and I don’t care if he is slight, Frazier is tough and a good player. Less so with a hand in his face — he was ineffective for the last 10 minutes — but he has some talent.

Good, gut-it-out win in which two seniors stepped up when they needed to. For me, that was the most important part of that win.

Comment by Carmen 12.04.13 @ 8:26 am

Odd game. Young and Artis barely saw the floor in the second half. Pitt forced some threes. Some of those missed badly. Penn State’s pressure seemed to work at times although it didn’t seem to be that intense.

Frazier had me flashing back to the last couple of years when Pitt guards couldn’t keep guys guys in front of them. Zanna’s last block was huge and really brought some momentum.

Is it just me or have referees been relaxing the “new rules” over the last week or so and allowing hand checking, arm “steering”, and the jump in front of a ballhandler charge call?

It seemed that there was a lot of inconsistency in the officiating last night. Some contact called. Other times not. I saw a no-call when a PSU guy jumped in front of Patterson near the foul line in the first half. PSU guy fell to the floor on what appeared to be a slight flop. Then I saw the same thing in the second half with Randall defending, only I thought he was much closer to being in guarding position, and the refs called a block.

Ped State fans are world class a-holes. Loved the hit the showers cheer.

Comment by Barvo 12.04.13 @ 9:24 am

I’ll take a deep run in the NCAAs over a 20-win regular season with eight pay-to-play patsies any day.

By the way, following and supporting Pitt basketball requires no group think, thank you.

Comment by TonyinHouston 12.04.13 @ 9:32 am

Pitt-Penn State was a heated basketball rivalry. The teams played two games a year most years before the Eastern Eight. The 1973-74 Regional Final team (Dixon cannot add that yet to his resume) lost at Penn State, one of the two or three regular season games Billy Knight’s bunch lost. It was a big f’ing deal.

Let’s see – sold out Pete for a non-conference game, a rarity at Pitt, the old “Penn State sucks”
cheer and the student section on point. How exactly do some of you define rivalry?

This game should be played every year.

But Dixon sure is predictable. I knew last night when Pitt wasn’t waltzing to victory he would pussy-out playing the Nits in the future.

And sure enough, looks like he did. Here is Cardiac Hill’s sccop on “Dixon as Joe Paterno.”

When it comes to non-conference scheduling, Dixon is lying when he makes excuses for not scheduling up. C’mon, Dixon, just tell us you’re inflating your record.

Playing Penn State is “scheduling up”? They may have some fight in them this year, but they’ve been terrible for the past ten!

Comment by JCE 12.04.13 @ 9:51 am

TonyinHouston, No, Pitt-Penn State was never a BB rivalry. Not even close. You must be thinking of Duquesne & WVU from the eastern 8. Or maybe Villanova. There is no interest in Pitt-Penn State BB in PA. Please give me Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Indiana, etc. when we play the ACC/BIG games.

Comment by rayhpgh 12.04.13 @ 9:54 am

Wow, saw where Ped State’s coach was implicitly complaining about officiating.

“You said it, I didn’t. But I would agree with that. I got guys with three and four fouls and they don’t want to foul. They’re backing off and that can hurt.”

Pitt had 19 fouls whistled. PSU had 26 whistled. I believe that there were six fouls called on PSU in the last minute and a half trying to lengthen the game. Granted Pitt committed a couple of silly ones during that stretch, but he really chose to complain about a discrepancy of a few fouls? He should have been teed twice during the game. One time he ran onto the court and yelled at each referee during a timeout. Another time he clearly berated a ref for about thirty seconds under the basket while the game was going on.

I thought PSU did a lot of hand checking and steering of Pitt perimeter players in the first half. Most of that went uncalled. It reminded me a lot of how Pitino teams liked to play on the perimeter.

Wonder if Bonasorte has trademarked
“Hit the Showers” yet, for some blue and gold
t-shirts for 2016???

Comment by Dan 12.04.13 @ 10:03 am

@Tony, I don’t remember that, vaguely I guess. Certainly not in the 90′s and 2000′s.

I remember the tri-rivalry of Pitt-Duq-WVU when they were hanging BB Flenory in effigy down in Morgantown.

I’m sure they had some tough games, just not remembering as a rivalry like the football.

With that being said, anything Penn State in the building gets the blood boiling, and it was evident last night, the crowd and the student section were absolutely rocking.

It also being a tight game had a lot to do with it I’m sure.

As for advocates of Duquesne and Robert Morris.

Robert Morris is like your little buddy. Hell, I cheer emphatically for them when they make the tourney, or if they’re on the tube in their tourney championship game. Against Kentucky last year, great game, was cheering out of my gord for them.

Duquesne, Duquesne, Duquesne. Yes, it USED to be a fantastic rivalry. Like the Browns no longer being a real rival of the Steelers, one of the teams has to win every once in awhile to keep the rivalry going. It’s just not there and hasn’t been in a long while.

It’s only my opinion certainly, and a humble one at that. I had more fun at the Pitt-Penn State game last night than I have had at any Pitt-RMU/Duquesne game in the last 15 years.

Comment by Dan 12.04.13 @ 10:17 am

By the way, this is not a “we’re good, you stink, you’re not a rival anymore” thing.

It’s just the way it is.

Hell, for the last 20 years, I’ve watched the
Reds, Phillies, Mets and Cardinals not consider the Pirates a rival any longer. We’ve all been on the other end if you are a baseball fan.

Now look, Pirates win a bit, suddenly you have one of the wildest games in Pirates history at PNC, and coming down the stretch, the Pirates/Reds/Cardinals games were all fantastic.

And nothing I’ve seen, and nothing any Duquesne buddies or family has seen, that Duquesne is doing anything to make a big effort to regain national prominence in hoops.

They hire someone for a few years, fire them or they quit, hire someone for a few years and on and on.

Actually, that has a familiar ring to it, where have I seen that before??? LOL

Comment by Dan 12.04.13 @ 10:24 am

Young, Artis, Newkirk … all first year players who show much promise, but, as most first year players, are very inconsistent. Nonetheless, I have no doubt all will be major contributors in the near future.

We probably lose this game last year because Patterson remained in the background and Adams did not have the skill or wherewithall to take over like Zanna did last night in 2nd half.

(But like Adams, he did steal the ball, drive 3/4 of the court and make the layup with a defender on his hip)

Comment by wbb 12.04.13 @ 10:58 am

Tonyinhouston, I was at the PSU-Pitt game in ’74 at old Rec Hall (what a dump) when Ron Brown hit a buzzer beater to snap Pitt’s 22 game winning streak.

Back then, PSU games were just staged as a recruting tool for JoePA to meet all the FB recruits. Don’t recall when PSU ever had a good BB team in that era.

They did reach the Sweet 16 about 10 years ago and won the NIT about 4 years ago … but didn’t sustain any success.

Comment by wbb 12.04.13 @ 11:08 am

Tony, the Pete is sold out for every game and has been for years. I was at the game and the Pete wasn’t even close to fully packed last night. But yeah PSU draws so well because it is such a rivalry. It is complete joke that you are suggesting that Dixon is now ducking PSU because they played a close game. PSU will probably stink next year without Frazier. But yeah scheduling PSU is a must. If you are going to do a home and home it would be better to do it against a team like Georgetown that actually provides exposure instead of PSU who is routinely bad. Also, you act like no other schools schedule these games. Everyone does it. Also if Dixon wants to pad his resume so much then why has Pitt been playing in these preseason tournaments which could expose you to a good team? And why is Pitt playing in the Maui next year, which usually has one of the best fields out there?

Comment by Wardapalooza 12.04.13 @ 12:57 pm

Pitt needs to schedule teams from DC or the City. Recruiting exposure. So play the Hoyas and Red Storm each year. Why we schedule a school located in the middle of a smelly cow pasture is beyond me.

Comment by TX Panther 12.04.13 @ 1:24 pm

Finally got to watch the game on tape as I was traveling last night.

A few thoughts….

* Zanna was nothing short of spectacular in the second half but needs a lot of footwork improvement on defense.

* I thought he would be a liability but it was our backcourt with Robinson that got dismantled in the first half, especially with Frazier dribble drives. Cannot give up that first step Mr. Robinson!

* Robinson will be among the slowest PG’s in the ACC and when he can’t find his shot, will be a real liability as (just like last year)the other defenders can play off him and double down on D.
PSU did that the entire first half.

* I think everyone is lost in how to interperet the new “driving” rule. Until it’s settled if I was a 1,2 or 3 in JD’s 1-4 offense,I would just put my head down and bull ahead inside with the ball.

* Pitt would have lost this game last year. Foul shooting and the presence of Newkirk who I predict will see huge minutes this year made the difference..and of course Zanna just taking over the game.

* Not only has Zanna worked on his offensive footwork, his shot is much different and he releases the ball at the tallest point…thank you Slice!

There are NO bad wins!!!

Hail to Pitt….Win and move on baby!

Comment by Dan 72 12.04.13 @ 1:49 pm

@TonyInHOuston. I know I replied, but after reading some retorts to your comment, I was going to jump on and defend you.

I’ve been railing for years Pitt fans deserve at least 1 non-con vs a BCS team for years. Actually we did up until a few years ago, playing Ohio State, Washington and Wisconsin all home and home.

Money, Schmoney, you got $20M a year now from the ACC, and on top of that, I see other schools that don’t seem to think giving up one home game, every other year is a big monetary deal.

Florida and UCONN, just did on Mon. Nite. They seem to think missing their game against Monmouth was worth it.

However, after glancing over your comment, I now see what some of the fella’s are talking about.

I agree, I’d like to play PSU every year, and I think it could become a good rivalry game, if PSU continues to elevate their program.

LOL!!!! I don’t think Pitt pussy-foots from anyone, we’ve played in the best league for years, now we’ve moved to what’s become the best league, we go to enough tourneys, Duke, Texas, Maryland, Stanford over the past couple years.

((you can’t help if who you play in those is having a down year a’la Stanford this year)).

So, Dixon has made his lunch on Syracuse, Villanove, Georgetown, UCONN, WVU, Notre Dame, and now Duke, North Carolina, and the rest of the ACC, and he’s pussy footing by not playing Penn State????????

Hell, I think the average margin the past 10 games Pitt has had with Penn State, have been worse than Robert Morris and Duquesne.

Didn’t we whack em’ by 35 or something last time we played??

C’mon brother, he may not be playing them for a lot of reasons, but losing, ah, I don’t think so.

Comment by Dan 12.04.13 @ 2:14 pm

@Dan 72: Thanks for the observations. I agree that driving pays given the current interpretation. Wish the Panthers did it more yesterday.

Newkirk was in for 25 minutes, but only took three shots. One was a missed three. Any ideas why he didn’t drive more?

Comment by Howard 12.04.13 @ 2:20 pm

At this point, Newkirk only has a learner’s permit. He’s not allowed to drive after sundown.

@Tony in Houston 1) comparing the Pitt – Penn St. football rivalry to the basketball programs is ridiculous. The football game was a 100 year competition played at the end of the season that was among the top 10 rivalries in the history of the sport. The basketball game was an interconference game that got a little extra notice off of the football rivalry. 2)I resent your sniping at Dixon’s character concerning the schedule because my guess is you have very little insight into the economic realities that limit his choices. 3) We quit playing them in hoops when their Coach DeChellis decided he was tired of us thumping them by 30 points a year and they withdrew. 4) If we are going to schedule a non con game against a legitimate opponent on a home and away basis I can name 20 teams off the top of my head that would be preferable to the soap swappers from happy valley. 5) I agree with you that Pitt needs to step up the Non con home schedule, but your Dixon bashing and Penn St courting leaves me standing against your ideas.

@SoS22 – I’m sure he had to be accompanied by a licensed driver perhaps TZ.

@PittDad, Do you mean TZ Talib Zanna or parking guru Trey Zeigler?

Is anyone else amazed that we are 8 games into the season and shooting over 75% from the foul line?

Comment by spiritofsection22 12.04.13 @ 3:44 pm

@SoS22 – LOL – I was going for Zanna

And I am pleased with the FT shooting although, as my family will tell you, it has taken away my main point of conversation during Pitt games – “gotta make those free throws.”

That was too good, Pitt Dad. It was abundantly clear that there were several times where Newkirk really *wanted* to shoot or drive but did not. That’s discipline. Hopefully in a few more games Dixon will loosen those reigns a little, because as long as Robinson shows that he either can’t or won’t penetrate, I’d like to see Newkirk do so, if nothing else than to keep other teams honest.

Also, in the first half, when the shots weren’t going down, would have loved to see them push the ball more. The Peds did a good job of getting back most often, but there were opportunities to break that were not taken.

Wondering how long Young remains in the starting lineup? If he continues to play this way, Artis should get the nod, IMO.

HoustonTony, the pedders quit scheduling Pitt when DeChellis cried no mas, although rumor has it that he was ordered to end it by poopy-pants.

As I have said previously, Dixon is the best coach Pitt could or would hire. Key emphasis in that sentence is Pitt. None of us would trust A.D. Pederson to hire Dixon’s replacement. And Pederson didn’t hire Dixon anyway.

Hard to see how Dixon prepares his teams for a March run in the tournament with schools like Albany, Howard, Cal Poly on the schedule.

No excuse for Dixon not playing West Virginia and Penn State every season if Penn State wants to renew series.

Not a Dixon groupie and refuse to believe some of the nonsense he tells reporters, especially about scheduling.

I’ve been Pitt basketball fan since 1968. Save the lectures on fan loyalty. It’s bullshit.

I’ve been a Pitt basketball fan for 40 years. We used to play a competitive early season schedule.
Feel free to check the Pitt media guides for reference.
