In the End, They Covered

Filed under: Basketball — Chas @ 8:26 am

The 17-pooint point spread may have seen a bit high, but after a sluggish shooting (and at times defending) first 25 minutes Pitt put the Bulls in the ground. At the end of the week this will be viewed as another blowout win.

Aside from Victor Rudd, there doesn’t seem to be much to this USF team. Not sure what happened to the Anthony Collins that killed Pitt in two games last year, but I’m rather sure that wasn’t the same Anthony Collins. It also doesn’t hurt that outside of the same Rudd, there are no USF players that like to go inside to get rebounds. It’s something sad when you can shoot 6-23, yet only manage 3 offensive rebounds. Not surprisingly USF had no second chance points in the game.

The two big storylines post-game was Coach Dixon letting the players “freelance.”

The Panthers shot just 27 percent in the first half, and Dixon decided to change things on offense after the Bulls took their lead.

Dixon instructed his players to freelance instead of calling his set plays from the bench. The switch proved to be effective as the Panthers scored 38 points after halftime to pull away from the last-place Bulls.

“It was just, ‘Play basketball,’ ” Dixon said of his message to his players. “It was more of a freelance-type thing. Just getting ball moved from one side to the other. I just wanted them to play basketball. I don’t know if they felt confident in that initially.

“They saw the results and felt better about it. I thought we were too stationary and too easy to guard. It’s something we have done and can use going forward.”

Woodall said it was the first time Dixon gave his players freedom all season. Woodall said the previous time Dixon gave his players carte blanche was four years ago when he was a freshman.

Dixon disputed that, but it was clear the change helped the Panthers Wednesday night.

“Guys settled down and settled in,” Woodall said. “Coach let us go play. We just went out and played how we do in practice.

Apparently they needed that. It also says something about how confident Dixon was that Pitt could ultimately handle USF.

Somewhat surprisingly Dante Taylor had a good game in both styles. In the first half, as the rest of the team struggled, Taylor had six points and six rebounds. In the second half he kept it up and finished with a double-double.

“It feels real good,” Taylor said. “I’ve been working hard the last few weeks in practice, so I just tried to carry it over into these last few games. Especially to get that one, this being the second-to-last home game, I just tried to come out and play hard.”

It was the third time this season Taylor has scored in double figures but the first in 19 games, since a 16-point effort against North Florida on Dec. 8, and his first double-double of the season. Taylor was averaging 4.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 15.6 minutes.

“Yeah, I don’t know what that is,” USF coach Stan Heath said. “I was certainly hoping he’d get his four or five points a game and that was it. He had a good game. He’s a senior, and I’m sure he wants to finish his career on a high note, and that’s got to be pretty encouraging for Pitt to see that light bulb come on and have him turn on at the end of the year.

“That gives them a nice little plus on that front line.”

Considering all the crap Taylor has had to take over the years, it was great to see. You could see how happy his teammates were for him to get those numbers.

Just some quick thoughts from the game.

Pretty much know what kind of game/impact Steven Adams is going to have in the first two minutes of a game. If he picks up that early foul, he’s going to be limited.

Lamar Patterson is still in a funk. And when he gets in a funk, it isn’t just his shooting. His passes were off and he hesitates even more to take open shots.

Aside from Tray Woodall and Patterson, I involuntarily  cringe when Pitt shoots a three.

I’ve taken to calling Trey Zeigler “Shark.” Like a shark, when he isn’t moving on offense he’s dead. Zeigler has to be moving with the ball or catch the ball while going. When he catches the ball on the perimeter standing still it is guaranteed he will just pass it and do nothing.

Is J.J. Moore showing some signs of life, or just teasing against a bad team?

I have no clue if Talib Zanna is snapping out of whatever funk he is in. There were signs of life. He seemed to have more energy. He didn’t take as many stupid shots, and he was as active on the glass as I’ve seen him in a while.

Practice shooting. Almost nothing but shooting all summer, James Robinson. Please. He’s now 19-73 (26.1%) in conference play. Not much better from outside at 5-21.

This was clearly Dixon at his best in the half time clubhouse. The defense was good throughout the game, especially the boxing out, but the team was 100% better on offence during the second half.

Dixon had a slightly different version in the postgame radio interview of what he told the team. He didn’t say anything about “freelance.”

He said that the players had been grinding it out on defense during the first half and then taking quick shots on offence. At half time he told them to be more patient on offence and pass it around before taking a shot. As a result, he said, they took better shots, and also they disrupted the USF tempo, so that USF became less patient on offence during the second half.

Any win this late in the season is a good win. I like how Taylor has been playing and going forward I hope he continues his strong play. I thought Ziegler did some good things and it seems when he is playing well so does Pitt. JJ Moore, again, left me wanting moore. When he is hitting his shot and rebounding I wonder why he doesn’t get more minutes, then he just plays horrible by passing on open shots making bad passes and soft on defense.

Comment by Bones 02.28.13 @ 8:52 am

So thrilled for Taylor.

Comment by HLandPitt 02.28.13 @ 8:53 am

Chas:
To answer your question, yes Moore is playing better. His D is really improving.
Zanna was AWOL on D. He did hustle for a couple of rebounds, including one that Patterson was in position to get but Zanna jumps over Lamar, knocks the ball out and lands hard on his hip. Just foolish.

Still cant believe how much I enjoy this blog & all the regular contributors. Being at the game last night with plans to attend on Sunday, I’ve begun to reflect on the careers of woodall and taylor. As far as Dante is concerned, I have been one of his critics. Has he underperformed based on incoming expectations? I suppose, BUT I will argue – as his proponent – that he has become the consummate college ballplayer. First he has overcome numerous nagging injuries (for whatever reason is now irrelevant) & is now overcoming the curse of being neither a break-out 4 (limited shooting range) or 5 (limited low post defense). Is he as good a rebounder as Gary McG? No. but his hands are far better. His unselfishness as a teammate is a trait to be cherished & I hope that he continues to build to what may be a surprisingly strong finish to his college career. As for Woodall, I told my sons this morning that we need to rewatch The Street Stops Here to honor Tray’s final games. His well documented personal situation aside, I believe he is tremendously underrated in the shadows of the Knight, Krauser, Fields, et al. It is my hope that he is given the greenlight to not only score (along with Lamar who seems to be earning a rep as an enigma – which is more than likely unfair – more accurate to say he is playing in a system that is predicated on keeping players on a short offensive leash) but to push the tempo which I continue to suspect favors this panther roster far better than any other in recent memory. I am sure all here will take a moment to realize that both these young men are panthers for life & I am optimistic that they will represent this university well as post grads! h2p

I listened to the radio broadcast of most of the last 8-10 minutes, and even before hearing the press conference quotes I thought it was interesting hearing Dixon on the sidelines. (You can really hear him at times next to Groat and Aiken.) He very clearly kept emphasizing “Play Basketball” — couldn’t ever really tell who specifically he was speaking to, but I heard it nearly a half dozen times. As the write-ups have mentioned, it seemed so out of character for him

Maybe this will be a turning point of sorts to unleash things — almost like when Brey/ND went to the “Burn” offense a few seasons ago because of injury, but then stuck to it due to its effectiveness. This would be sort of the “Bizarro Burn.”

Comment by JW 02.28.13 @ 9:41 am

We need Dante Taylor’s offense. There were times last night, when it looked like this Pitt team just could not score. J.J. Moore played also played well and we will need both of them to play well, if the Panthers are going to do anything, in the post season tournaments. It seemed to me that when Pitt began to run and push the ball down court that they took control of the game. With a 10 man rotation is someting that they should look to do more of, in the future.

Comment by Justinian 02.28.13 @ 9:52 am

No one can predict how this team will do in the tournaments. If they are one and done in the Big East, I would be a little surprised, but not that much, especially if we get the double bye. In the big dance, we should win the first one, but after that it is always a crap shoot.

There is still much to love about this team. Statistically, they may be the best defensive team ever, pretty amazing considering last year. They are a pretty good rebounding team. They are the deepest team ever.

The great Blair, Young, Fields team had no depth, in fact in their last game, no one else scored. This team is consistently getting scoring out of 8,9 or 10 guys every game.

This team can beat anyone, but on any given night if Woodall and Patterson are cold, they could lose to anyone.

They have a great road record which bodes well.

All the tourney losses that Cook brings up, time after time, are in the past and mean nothing to the players on this team.

This team is rated 23rd, all things considered, that is pretty good. I will be a little disappointed if we don’t make the sweet sixteen, anything over that is gravy.

This team should make any Pitt Panther Fan very proud in many ways.

Let’s hope they peak at the right time.

Comment by gc 02.28.13 @ 9:57 am

I hope things end up timed so the BET at MSG ends up being a coming out party going forward into the big dance.

I can’t believe its almost bracket time already!

breeze,I too hope both young men will carry into the futures the positive things they have built on here at Pitt.I am confident that they both will prove to be fine contributors in life as they have demonstrated here at Pitt as well.Dante played an excellent game and Woodall continued to show good range and leadership. I was a little frustrated with our poor offense in the 1st 25 minutes but think we benefitted from pounding the ball inside.Though we didn’t have the points we created foul problems and wore down the interior D setting up an offensive outburst mostly generated by Taylor.Adams and Zanna wore the bull down and Dante got to stick the sword in.Dixon might have learned something last night too.He works so hard during the game I worry about him stroking out on the sideline.Sometimes he might be best served too back off and let them have at it.You can coach your heart out but that doesn’t mean 20 year olds are listenning.I have 2 sons and know that feeling all too well.Reports from the sideline indicate he let the team frelance a bit in the 2nd half.

I wasn’t stunned to hear that Dixon calls the sets on every offensive possesion. Before we get carried away with him being a micromanager, let me remind you that they have only one set! 1-4 against man and they altar it against a zone to find the overload position.

I have been an ardent critic of Dixon’s for this as every team we face has scouted us and knows every play off of every pass, usually 2 passes ahead. Kind of like the old Green Bay Packers sweep…you know it’s coming but you cannot stop it. Trust me, that wears on players after a while.

I have wanted Jamie to put in some “flex” sets like the pros/Maryland/Duke run as it gives better spacing all around… but nada so far.

You could see the “joy’ in the players faces in the second half when he lifted the restrictions and the look of bewilderment in S Fla as they had never seen Pitt run the “cuts” and screens they were freelancing.

Maybe ….just maybe…this is what we need to be successful in the tourney.

Until then, hat’s off to Jamie and the team. All wins are good wins….no matter what.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Dan 72 02.28.13 @ 10:17 am

Jamie to be applauded for his praise of Taylor after his solid performance.

Has to mean a lot to Dante and his family.

This is the kind of thing that should not go unnoticed by recruits considering coming to Pitt.

Comment by PittofDreams 02.28.13 @ 10:24 am

Does anyone know what range Pitt will finish in the Big East? Trying to figure out which tournament tickets to buy.

Comment by Chris 02.28.13 @ 10:24 am

I totally disagree with Cook’s article in today’s PG,he’s just “the glass is half empty” kind of guy, who looks at Pitt’s NCAA torunament appearences as failures. I don’t necessarily look at the losses as coaching failures. In the Scotty Pippen coast to coast play, I do not believe Villanova got the ball inbounded in time and the call should have been made. In the loss to Butler, it was a momentary unfortunate brain freeze by Nassir Robinson, who was normally a savy player. I thought the team over-achieved that year. In the loss to Marquette, they incountered a team with a superstar, in Dwane Wade, for whom they had no one to match up with. This has been the best extended period of Pitt basketball EVER. If they contunue play quality basketball year in and year out, they will eventually make it to the final four. Then we can read about their percieved failure, if they fall short of winning the National Championship.

Few observations:

*The crowd at the Pete was late arriving, sparse and very unenthusiastic.

*This Pitt team has been good at beating bad teams. SFU is a bad team.

*Hated seeing Stan Heath on the sideline, he’s been a thorn in Pitt’s side for years. Was very glad he didn’t have Trevor Hoffmann or Antonio Gates on his team last night.

*That Omogbehin is the biggest human being I have ever seen. He made Sleepy, standing next to him, look like a little kid.

*Most college basketball teams run set plays (sets) and some kind of motion (“freelance”) offense. Both have their place. Pitt runs a much higher percentage of sets than most. The good thing about running sets is that everyone knows what to do, you can practice them and they can be be executed even when you don’t have great individual players. The bad thing about sets is they stifle creativity (and sometimes energy) and OTHER TEAMS can scout them and know what you’re doing, it makes them easier to stop. I have never thought of this team as being similar to the Green Bay Packers of the ’60′s.

*I like that Pitt is going to more motion offense. They did a good job of spreading the floor and getting the ball to good spots in the second half. But don’t expect an epiphany. Pitt still doesn’t have guys who can consistently win one on one battles. They will need some structure to consistently get good shots.

*The best part about the “freelance” last night is that it indicates Jamie’s willingness to CHANGE. He has been way too rigid in the past. It shows major growth on his part.

*Watched the 14-0 run on ESPN3 this morning. No magic, a good 3/4 court pass from Robinson, two good open 3′s, two good offensive rebounds, and a lot of mistakes and misses by SFU.

*Is it just me, or do you guys see Patterson and Woodall getting consistently beat of the dribble? Drives me nuts.

*Patterson has to get more aggressive on offense.

*Pitt still has a chance to get the double bye. Three things ALL need to happen:
1)They need to win out – likely.
2)They need ND to lose at Louisville and at Marquette – possible.
3) And need Syracuse to lose one more – possible.
I’d say 25% chance.

*I see no evidence, either from this team or past Dixon coached teams, to indicate that they are getting hot at the right time. Anyone who thinks otherwise is irrationally optimistic. As a fan that’s ok.

*Past team’s performance is relevant to this team, for one HUGE reason, the coach. College hoops is still a coaches game.

Comment by boubacar aw 02.28.13 @ 10:48 am

Would like to see Patterson be more decisive and assertive with his shots. He’s in too much of a pass first mode, and you can see it when he has 2nd thoughts on pulling the trigger. I like the lack of selfishness to a point and he is a great passer, but he’s also a good shooter who needs to pull the trigger. This team is not that strong a perimeter shooting team and depends on that shot. If he’s in a slump he needs to work through it rather than passing his way out.

Comment by Ghost of Hornman 02.28.13 @ 10:50 am

If I set the Over/Under for remaining wins at 4.5, how many of you would bet a significant amount of money on the Over?

I would not.

Pitt will be heavy favorites in at least four (Nova home, DePaul, 1st round BE, 1st round NCAA). Other than that where do they get a win?

Comment by boubacar aw 02.28.13 @ 10:53 am

Pitt also pushed the ball in the 2nd half, led by Robinson. But as I preached last night, Robinson needs to shoot. If you won’t shoot you don’t need to be guarded.
Zeigler is totally out of it, but Zanna was into it! He even posted up for a little shot in the paint and grabbed rebounds.
Two things: when is the last time anyone saw a fast break in college hoops. Next, what were Adams and the official discussing?

Comment by SFPitt 02.28.13 @ 10:54 am

Also…Sean Miller and ZONA went down to below average USC team last night..thats now 5 losses to unranked teams for them (and it should have been 6 if the refs counted the buzzer beater Colorado made)

I dont hate the idea of Sean Miller being here to coach..but he has had great recruiting classes recently and has still underachieved

Comment by Julius Page's Headband 02.28.13 @ 11:02 am

spot on. rational or not – Is it possible that these next 2-4 years may be the signature of HCJD’s career? bottom line is that regardless of the ending, this seasons team has rewrote any expectations. anything less than a sweet 16 is underperforming in our eyes now – thanks to the coaching staffs efforts (the aforementioned 20 yo factor. one has to only glance next to our tunnel & smile as our FB panthers soak up the college life hoop players enjoy more anonymity at heinz!).
I submit that regardless of this seasons outcome this team will have (a) far exceeded preseason expectations (b) provided a tremendous amount of seasoning to the underclassmen. Now we have calibrated our expectations of Adams, Moore, Zanna, Wright, Johnson, Robinson moving forward. JD’s an orthodox man in his basketball metaphysics (but this season is he starting to show an desire or a willingness or a confidence to expand his beliefs?) – like the style or not hes doing everything he knows how to increase our statistical probability. h2p

Comment by ptbreezeb 02.28.13 @ 11:10 am

I was more optimistic of a long tourney run (both BE and NCAA) a couple of weeks ago because I thought Adams was improving with every game, and IMO he has the biggest upside.

However, lately, it’s back to a few steps forward and a couple back … although he is no doubt improved from earlier in the year.

While his inconsistency is undertandable being his lack of experience, the only player on this team with any measure of consistency is Woodall. IMO Patterson is the big enigma … he can be the catalyst but for whatever reason he seems to be reluctant to take charge.

I also think that Robinson hurts this offense. He rarely penetrates any more and as noted by Chas, his shooting is pathetic. The only reason he is playing so much is his defense, but if Wright’s defense is comparable, I’d rather see him playing with Tray at 1.

Comment by wbb 02.28.13 @ 11:11 am

Last night Adams may have faced the only person who has ever TOWERED over him. His 1st 2 shots were definitly tentative. But when getting his 1st foul for tackling a gaurd, he showed more aggressiveness that I’ve seen from him. I was pleased to see that all of them were fighting hard.

Since the Georgetown game, this was the 1st time Pitt truly out-physicalled* the opponent.

Fitzpatrick was a match-up nightmare (shooting over Zanna, driving on Adams) and Rudd made some circus shots (you’ll have that) and USF missed some open shots (you’ll have that too). But Pitt’s Man-to-Man D may been the best it’s been all year.

I disagree that Pitt’s offense was bad for 25 minutes. They were driving to the paint and drawing fouls and wearing USF down. It may have not been a “work of art”, but it got Fitzpatrick into foul trouble and opened more options.

Funniest play of the night:
Adams makes a spin-move on the giant. And all Omogbehin could do was reach across Adams’ waist. But with very little effort the giant stopped Adams in his tracks.

I believe that this was exactly the type of game that Pitt will have to win in an early round of the NCAA.

*Is out-physicalled a word?

Comment by xfmrman 02.28.13 @ 11:28 am

Unless I have missed something, and that is unlikely as I am again way too vested in Pitt hoops,I think it is unlikely this team wins a second game in the NCAA tourney. We have a good enough D to play with virtually anyone, but we miss too many fouls and have real problems finishing inside. We also struggle with rebounding always at the wrong time. The key to any tourney success ifor this group will be pairings. We seem to do well against teams with limited depth and teams without size inside have a hard time with us too.Unfortunately by the second game in the tourney our chances of drawing such a matchup are unlikely. I sure hope I am wrong but I’m thinking 1 win.I don’t see this as exceeding preseason expectations, but it isn’t an underacheivment either.More than 1 win in the Garden or the NCAA’s would be a step forward beyond realistic preseason projections and less than 1 win at either would be a drop off.

Comment by spiritofsection22 02.28.13 @ 11:36 am

Boubacar:
4.5 sounds about right. I would rather see 2 wins in the NCAA and give the game at MSG.

Comment by xfmrman 02.28.13 @ 11:37 am

No way can Adams not play 30 minutes. The defensiv improvement of this team is directly because of him.
If used more the offensive production would increase. How many centers in the country can shot 40 to 50% from 20 ft. out and beat guards from half court on a fast break.
Offensively he is still learning although he gets little or no help from his teammates or confidence in him from his coach.
That said it is obvious Taylor is better than Zanna but on Adams worst day Taylor is not close to Adams (look at the records this year-last year).
Adams does not get the creit or playing time he deserves. To improve he ought to consider going one and done this program has not restricted him for sake of early season wins rather than help his confidence which is all he needs.

Comment by pittisit 02.28.13 @ 11:41 am

Steven Adams is really good athlete who can run the court, defend and block shots, but he will need to work on offensive game in the off-season. Dante Taylor has a nice shooting touch and has the offensive game they are going to need in the up-coming tounaments. I was hoping Adams’ offensive game would continue to come around, but it’s apparent it won’t happen overnight. Hopefully Jamie Dixon will be be able to mix and match and play a little more offense and defence.

Comment by Justinian 02.28.13 @ 11:46 am

spirit i know you are right. i know that patterson gets beat on d & maybe what looks like a tentative nature could be a limited offensive repertoire. i know that tray has problems with larger guards and at time appears to be unable to catch up (or pass by) those quicker opponents regardless of their size. and those are just the tip of our iceberg! but for the love of mankind we have to be due for a perfect storm (items like but not limited to: JD loosening the leash, Adams in the middle, a favorable bracket with a tailwind). sooner or latter we have to be able to catch a damn break! ok, maybe i am going a little to far in my effort to be a reformed cynic. Fair points on Sean (although he has performed in march) & btw AHHCHkHEM seems to be doing less than spectacularly against top opponents.

pittisit, if you did a +- like they do in hockey, you would no doubt find that Taylor’s humbers were better than Adams last night. In fact, when Adam’s left the game at around 9 minutes in the 1st half, Pitt was losing but was up by 5, 26-21, at 3;24 when the final madatory TO was called. Adams came back in and Pitt went scoreless the rest f the half.

Taylor was also on the floor just about the entire 16-0 run in the 2nd half, thus your post above was inaccurate .. at least for last night’s game.

Adams right now is WAY too inconsistent to be considered as the go-to guy for every game

Comment by wbb 02.28.13 @ 12:05 pm

Where Dante has it all over Adams right now is at the FT line. Taylor is 30/42 (71%) for the season while Adams is 26/62 (42%). Zanna, for some reason, has the most free throw attempts on the team (113) and has a 68% average for the season. FT shots, particularly near the end of the game, are crucial for this team.

I thought last nights game looked like most of our games this year, slow first half (about 25 or so points) followed by a second half that does not always look pretty but manages to produce 35 or more points…I was really impressed with Sleepy as well…Adams may still be finding his way on offense, but he is a defensive force, his presence alone drives a lot of prospective scorers out of the paint…I can’t say that Zanna play has me “disappointed”. I never saw him as a “star” to begin with. We get what we get from him…I will say that Zeigler is a puzzle to me. I feel like he is struggling as much or more than Zanna with his game…missed layups, missed FT’s, and turnovers. Hopefully, he will improve next year because we are really going to need him to compete in the ACC.

Comment by HbgFrank 02.28.13 @ 12:45 pm

Wbb… yeah… I was being sarcastic, haha. It was their first conference win, I just thought it was a bit entertaining it was against our only B10 competition of the season. There is a reason we play Duq every year and haven’t played PSU since what… 2005/6?

Although i’m not so sarcastic about PSU going to the ACC, I have commented a few times about that. (obviously their BBall wouldn’t be that attractive to the ACC though)

And they were lights out in the last 15 minutes and even hotter than that when they needed some points to cover. lol

North Florida (NR) over Northern Kentucky (Should be close)

GC, I know, I was bummed out that I couldn’t get tickets anywhere on the lower level. I really don’t like the upper deck. You’re just too far away from the action up there. There wasn’t a Jumbo-Tron at Pitt Stadium, but in the top rows you still had great sight lines. I would rather stay home and watch the games on TV, than from the upper deck of Heinz Field. I’m dissappointed, but what can you do?

Comment by Justinian 02.28.13 @ 1:29 pm

Ae we even sure the committee uses the RPI as a major factor anymore given other indices like BPI which I’m told is more accurate.

Comment by TX Panther 02.28.13 @ 1:33 pm

Speaking of giants…..biggest one I saw..was that Russian dude who was like 7-6, 320 lbs who played in the NBA for a couple seasons for the Washington Wizards.

Can’t remember his name though.

Comment by EMel 02.28.13 @ 1:35 pm

Found him.

Gheorghe Muresan….

Dude was 7’7″ and 315 lbs.

Actually he was Romanian

Justinian, I’m also no fan of the upper deck but those lower sections in the 5th level aren’t bad if you can get them.

There is also the gray seats (2nd level0 if you can afford them

Comment by wbb 02.28.13 @ 1:54 pm

You could see the “joy’ in the players faces in the second half when he lifted the restrictions and the look of bewilderment in S Fla as they had never seen Pitt run the “cuts” and screens they were freelancing.

Maybe ….just maybe…this is what we need to be successful in the tourney.

Comment by Dan 72 02.28.13 @ 10:17 am

Agree wholeheartedly Dan72….since PITT has been running the same sets for the last decade, we are pretty easy to scout.

Therefore we need to add some new wrinkles to the old standbys. Makes you much harder to scout and creates a little doubt in teams, as they’re not quite sure,,,what PITT is doing. As you said, USF was like…..WTF in the 2nd half.

That is just enough of an edge to get you past some of these teams in the NCAA’s they we lose by a couple points/mistakes.

Perhaps a gimmick defense you can use occasionally is in order as well. Just to throw the opponent off stride. These are things other teams throw at us, it’s time we reverse that !

Comment by EMel 02.28.13 @ 2:04 pm

Justinian, Me and a buddy got two single tickets, in sections 110 and 111. There are still a few singles left.

Last nights game revealed at least 2 things: 1). JD realized HE has caused the offensive spiral by his ” mother-hen like” smothering of any offensive creativity from his baby chicks ,er, panthers. 2). Right now, Taylor needs to PLAY. Fact is Zanna is a great kid, but his production has dropped so far off, any coach worth his weight would sit him – it’s the right thing to do and it sends the simple message:”if you don’t produce you don’t play”. That, my friends is the reality of life-so understand it now and it will help you the rest of your life.

They look like pajama bottoms or surfing baggies

Comment by gc 02.28.13 @ 2:16 pm

If I could pick just one thing to fix of this team’s several problems, it would be the layups. They miss SO MANY, and for no apparent reason. I’ll take JR’s terrible shooting, Patterson’s inconsistency, Zanna’s general frailty, even the poor FT shooting. Just make the stinkin’ layups and that will make a huge difference.

And I don’t know if Dixon told them to do it, but did you notice that the guards were picking up, lightly, full court here and there? It’s not much, but given Dixon’s conservative nature, even that is something to be happy with.

Despite some misses inside, I was very pleased to see Moore get to the rack. I saw some hints of confidence there and hoping it will carry over into this last part of the season. If Moore started becoming a stronger contributor, the whole ball game changes. I’m not holding my breath, just sayin’…

Comment by Carmen 02.28.13 @ 2:32 pm

At first I thought the uniforms were just some concept.

I cannot belive they will wear them into the tourny. Wow, just wow, talk about murdering brand identity. Whats up with the zebra-tiger stripes!?! I’m glad we switched to Nike right now.

Comment by Benzene 02.28.13 @ 2:47 pm

And what’s up with that puke neon green for ND?

Comment by Pitt Dad 02.28.13 @ 3:17 pm

I wouldn’t want Pitt to wear those things even if it had script Pitt on them

Comment by wbb 02.28.13 @ 3:57 pm

Pittman,I disagre, much of Taylor’s success last night was after Adams and Zanna softened up the inside with some extremely physical play.I thought Zanna played a half decent game and certainly was a contributor. If Taylor starts Sunday it will be a simple courtesy to a senior playing his last home game.

@ Justinian

re: not being able to get tix, go to Stubhub bro. You can get tix for anything, money talks and you know what walks.

Also, you’ve referenced ‘Scottie Pippen’ multiple times in Blather. It’s Scottie Reynolds. Can’t tell if that’s an honest mistake or your being sarcastic. Drives me kinda nuts, sorry. His name is in my “Disappoinment Hall of Fame” along with Francisco Cabrera, David Volek, Barry Goheen, 48-14, etc etc. unfortunately that list gets longer as I get older. HTP.

not bb but good info a top sports site
is ranking all 125 major head coaching jobs
were school is at history the field it plays
on etc etc.
for 2013 penn state is ranked number 14
wvu is ranked number 25
pitt is ranked number 31
ASU is ranked number 39

so pitt did well out of 125 number 31
and ranked higher then asu.
so for you who say this is not a destination job
you can take that talk back and stuff it.

OK…someone explain to me why DeJuan Blair’s brother (Greg) plays linebacker for Cincy?

http://www.nba.com/spurs/features/121121_rodriguez_blair

Doesn’t Pitt need linebackers?

Comment by Jackagain 02.28.13 @ 6:46 pm

Greg Blair was a JUCO or Communit College player (possibly due to grades) but apparently wasn’t recruited by T Grahan a couple of years ago — though I’m not sure about that.

He turned out to be a really good LB (believe 1st or 2nd team All BE) and you may recall made an interception vs Pitt this past season. Saddler’s cousin

Comment by wbb 02.28.13 @ 7:05 pm

did we recruit him maybe he wasent good in high school may be grades i dont know.

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.28.13 @ 7:09 pm

Great….now DeJuan is rooting for Cincy in FB….

Comment by Jackagain 02.28.13 @ 7:38 pm

let me put it this way athlon sports says pitt
is a better place to be a coach then 8 of the big 10
14 schools,
it is a better place to coach then 7 of the acc
14 schools
so dont say pitt should have trouble geting coachs
pitt is a great place to be a coach in football.

Comment by Jackagain 02.28.13 @ 8:02 pm

wbb, Yes, the upper deck seats below the walkway are pretty good. There are about 8 to 10 rows seats there by the rail. If they were still available, I would have gotten them. I had seats above there on the 50 yard line for several years, just above the entrance to the walkway. If you really like to see the game it’s too far away.

Comment by Justinian 02.28.13 @ 8:09 pm

Pittbluegold, I will do my very best, not to refer to Scotty Reynolds as Scotty Pippen. I can’t promise results, but I will make a concerted effort to do so.

Comment by wbb 02.28.13 @ 9:31 pm

@FRANKCAN – it’s more like a car wreck on the other side of the highway.

Comment by Pitt Dad 02.28.13 @ 9:42 pm

wbb, You’re a better man I am Gunga Din! I may have to do the same, but it sucks!

One of the things that has annoyed me in the past is that the ticket office always wants you to renew the season ticket that you have. Even if you want to upgrade them. When tickets become availible they tell they can’t guarantee you tickets anywhere.

I was at the Cincinnatti game, in the lower level endzone corner and dispite the outcome of the game, I liked those seats better.

Comment by Justinian 02.28.13 @ 9:48 pm

No help on the RPI front tonight.

Detroit, North Florida & Kennessaw Mountain all lost. blah

However at 10-6 in the conf. if we can win out, we look good for the Double Bye.

Notre Dame has Marquette, St. John’s & Louisville

Cuse has L-ville, DePaul & Georgetown

L-ville has Cuse, Cincy & ND

Marquette & G-Town have lesser schedules & appear set to get the Double Bye.

Comment by EMel 02.28.13 @ 9:55 pm

Justinian, I haven’t had season tickets since I moved away, and hadn’t been to a game since the 011 Utah game. But a friend called me up and said he was buying them, and twsited my arm. We used to sit near the 50 (visitor’s side — 1st level) now I’ll be up in 7th heaven

Comment by wbb 02.28.13 @ 10:01 pm

I got upper level seats like 2 or 3 rows back and I’m quite happy with them… but that was 3 months ago… After seeing who we’d be playing I knew that there would be ‘the rush’ eventually! I’m just going to be happy when I see that first sellout crowd!

Comment by Benzene 02.28.13 @ 10:12 pm

At least Mount St. Mary’s won! :)

Comment by xfmrman 02.28.13 @ 10:18 pm

Great game for Dante’. Can’t help but pull for the kid. I expect him to do well in life as he appears to have his head on straight and perhaps even have success in Europe playing bball, should he choose that option. Lesser talents have succeeded there and it may be an option because of his size and skill set.

As far as the NCAA tourney is concerned, I too agree that Pitt will win the first round game. After that, it is a crapshoot and it all depends on match-ups. Great guard play usually is the differentiating factor. Pitt has had some very solid guards, but not great guards since Vonteego.

Comment by dhuffdaddy 02.28.13 @ 10:19 pm

Wbb look at it this way you are helping to cover
up the yellow seats.
that every one hates seeing on tv just say to
your self you are doing it for the greater good
of pitt.
and is not 7th heaven a good place for praying
for a win closer to the football gods and all that

Comment by FRANKCAN 02.28.13 @ 10:24 pm

Benzene, if you’re 3 rows back they’re still pretty good, particularily if you’re below the walk way. My old seats used to be above the walkway on the 50, just above the entrance. I had to let them go because I couldn’t go one year. When I got tickets the following year they weren’t as good.

Comment by Justinian 02.28.13 @ 10:34 pm

Not sure if wewill see it but I wouldn’t mind Pitt playing one home and one away pre-season game each year with old foes from the new Big East (GTown, Marquette, Providence, Nova etc). It would be wise to play as many games a year in Philly / NYC corridor as possible for recriting purposes

Comment by wbb 02.28.13 @ 10:47 pm

Adidas’s uniforms for those 6 schools are hideous.

Sleeves on basketball uniforms, reminds me of when Point Park College’s uni’s were like that.

Very bush league.

In fact the cut of men’s uniforms today are almost exactly the same cut as the women’s uniforms. Unisex uniforms. That’s a yucky trend.

Morphing the sex’s is not a good idea. Visit Walmart on a Sat. afternoon and you’ll get a taste. lol

#3 (and projected #1 seed) Duke going down on the road to unranked UVA. 19th time this year a top 5 team has lost to an unranked team. Yes it is an anything can happen year in CBB.

Comment by Pitt Dad 02.28.13 @ 11:09 pm

Duke lost to UVA. the difference was the Harris kid who can shoot: mid range jumpers at that!
Last night Durand Durand came in and hit a key 3, then played some stellar D.
Like it or not, it is too late to go to a 7 or 8 rotation. Next year Durand will replace Woodall as the legit outside threat.

Comment by SFPitt 02.28.13 @ 11:15 pm

Justinian, I may have your old seats. Mine are on the 50 in the row just above the walkway on the Pitt side of the field. I love these seats. Beautiful view of the city to boot.

Comment by Annie 02.28.13 @ 11:56 pm

Annie, yes it sounds like you have them with the view of the city to your right. We had 5 together, I had 3 and my brother had 2.

Comment by Justinian 03.01.13 @ 12:56 am

wbb, yes playing in Philly and New York is important. I imagine Jamie will make sure we continue to play St. John’s and Villanova or Temple.

Comment by Justinian 03.01.13 @ 1:06 am

Hey we did get a little help in the RPI thing.

Mount St. Mary’s beat Monmouth 77-63.

If you remember we beat them in the very first game of the year….80-48.

They are currently 10-7 (15-13) in 6th place in the NEC.
Go Mounties….lol

Interesting stat Pitt Dad, yes anyone can beat anyone. Look at Illinois & Minny beating Indiana.
USF beating Georgetown, and this is the hum dinger, TCU who scored 9 points in a half last week, beating #4 Kansas. Don’t need to offer any more examples at this point.

So we get a break or two in the Dance, who knows.

I’m not going to expect much, therefore I won’t be disappointed.

It’s like going to a wedding reception when you’re single. :-)

Comment by EMel 03.01.13 @ 7:09 am

Regardless of seeding, Pitt will go to the NCAA Tournament which is much improved from 2012. Remember! Looking ahead, Pitt’s 2014 season in the ACC should be very competitive. Let’s hope Steve Adams returns for at least one more year.

Hail To Pitt!

Comment by MariettaMike 03.01.13 @ 7:16 am

Does the Virginia win last nite say more about good they are, or how mediocre the ACC is as a whole?
There is no doubt that when Pitt and Syracuse join next season (and Louisville in 2014) that the lofty status that Duke and UNC enjoy with ESPN (Vitale and Co.) will finally be challenged.

Comment by xfmrman 03.01.13 @ 9:28 am

God, if we have to listen to Vitale’s babble more often maybe we ought to rethink this.

Comment by gc 03.01.13 @ 9:41 am

Comment by wbb 03.01.13 @ 9:45 am

Wbb, unfortunately they are out of sync, Hillgrove tells you what happens before you see it. Maybe just the sound off and I can do my own commentary. The guy really ruins the game for me.

Comment by gc 03.01.13 @ 10:12 am

Vitale is an institution, and I think he is a true philanthropic and kind human being. That being said he looks like Mr. Potato Head and is oppinion is about as valuable. He is one of those people who I don’t really enjoy but will miss when he is gone.It amazes me that someone so ill suited for his job can be so successful.Only in America.
