Have A Beer in Meadville

Over the years I’ve made no secret of my love of good beer. Along with bourbon, Scotch, and assorted other spirits. This past summer, after years of whining about wanting to do it, I finally started doing some homebrewing. I’m enjoying it, and now engaging in the predictable lament of not having enough time to do it as often as I would like. Brewing has a fair amount of gap. Time to idly daydream while waiting for the next step. There’s plenty of time to fantasize about doing it fulltime. Trying to make a living at it. Even the crappiest homebrewer has those daydreams.

One of the readers — usd121 — is actually living that dream. He is the head brewer at Voodoo Brewery in Meadville, PA.

Curt is debuting his first beer on Thursday. It is an IPA named HTP.

For those that can’t figure out the acronym, that’s Hail To Pitt.

Here’s a bit about the beer from Curt:

HTP is an 8.0% IPA brewed with four kinds of malted barley. HTP used only Simcoe and Zythos hops.

The deep gold body of the beer provides a strong enough malt backbone to balance out the aggressive hopping schedule (over 30lbs!) HTP received. The nose of the beer is rich in fruity and piney notes. There are hints of tangerine, citrus, and floral undertones. The medium bodied beer starts with a mildly bitter taste that gives way to the fruit and pine notes found in the nose on the back end. HTP is a bright and crisp IPA that was designed to be highly drinkable.

If you are anywhere near Meadville, you owe it to yourself (and me since I can’t be there) to stop by on Thursday to raise a pint.

Voodoo’s distribution is still quite small. And this beer is a one-off, so you can only grab a pint — or a growler — of it in Meadville.

While Voodoo does not offer brewery tours, Curt is generously offering to make a special exception if there is a contingent of Pitt Blather fans interested in meeting some Sunday at the brewery for a tasting. A tasting that would include some of the other beers (possibly even from the Barrel collection).

So… are there enough interested people in meeting up on a Sunday in Meadville within the next month. The 27th might be the best target day. In between the Superbowl and sandwiched between DePaul on Saturday and Louisville on Monday.

Who is up for beer?

That’s so cool Chas and Curt. Wish I was closer as I would definitely participate. Also I’m going to be in Dallas on the 27th.

Shucks gotta settle for those Texas women instead of the girls of Meadville.

Life is not fair 🙂

8% is not bad, as I am a fan of high octane suds.
With 3 Philosophers at 9.8% being a fav.

Wow I don’t know many ppl who imbibe in both bourbon & scotch. (almost like oil & water)

Chas you are truly a unique person. I look forward to the day we meet. As in it takes one to know one.

How about sending some HTP to the Kemp family?

JoJo Kemp down to Pitt, WVU and Kentucky. Will announce next week.
________

“Pitt has a great environment with it being in the inner city,” Kemp said. “I know there is a chance for me to go to Pittsburgh and right away in that pro-style offense. I’m just trying to debate if I want to go to pro-style or the spread.” – Orlando Sentinel

Comment by PittofDreams 01.10.13 @ 2:29 am

Looks like a good one. And in the old Pitt colors. I hope there is a warning on it for Hoopies and Nitters. Drinking this beer may bring you back to reality.

Comment by TX Panther 01.10.13 @ 6:51 am

I would be surprised if Kemp goes to WVU, they already have 3 RB’s committed to the 2013 class.

Comment by winedogs 01.10.13 @ 8:20 am

I’d be in.

Comment by Carmen 01.10.13 @ 8:25 am

HEy — We have a trip going up north to check the place out on Feb 23rd. You can actually buy tickets at http://www.PABrewTour.com. Voodoo is incredible

Comment by Jake 01.10.13 @ 8:33 am

Definitely a tailgate must have!!

Comment by JP 01.10.13 @ 8:45 am

Thanks Chas and Curt. The last time I was in Meadville, I was enrolled at Allegeny, playing for Ken O’Keefe. I always wondered why he never got a shot as a Head Coach at a 1-A. He was a Head at Fordham before going to Iowa. I remeber he was also supposed to be an OC for Tressel at YSU. Another note, Rob Smith was also on that team, he is now DC at Rutgers.

Comment by Bones 01.10.13 @ 8:46 am

We also had Rommie Anderson, who played for the Packers in the Super Bowl and I hosted Joe Rossi on a recruiting visit, now he is DC at Maine, same Maine D that almost beat Pitt 2 years ago.

I would love to go i am only 28 miles from there
but right now i am very sick flu.
may be next time.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.10.13 @ 8:58 am

some one should tell jo jo that WVU has 6 RB COMMITED ALL READY.

Comment by Coach Ditka 01.10.13 @ 9:29 am

Beer should not be fruity

Comment by Yeti 01.10.13 @ 9:30 am

Fruity sour beers, inspired by Belgium, are big in the US beer geek community now. I love ’em.

Curt, congrats! Love Simcoe hops. Hope I can try HTP sometime!

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.10.13 @ 10:01 am

FRANKCAN, don’t mess with the flu, take your time and allow for a full recovery before you try to get back into the full swing of daily life.

I made the mistake of NOT taking the flu seriously enough and paid the price last year. Since I’m a small business owner, I attempted to work through my illness after only giving into a three day weekend attempt to kick my symptoms and ended up being rewarded with pneumonia for my puritan work ethic habits.

Its been nine months and I’m only now feeling well enough, lung capacity wise, to restart my usual daily workout routine again.

Old guys like us have to respect the flu, or else. So take your time and get well soon!

As a native of Meadville and a big fan of Voodoo’s Love Child, I couldn’t be happier. Voodoo has made some pretty decent beers. Like I said, buy a Love Child with your HTP. Voodoo is on Arch Street, right off the Arch Street exit on the French Creek Parkway (US 6 & 19).

Comment by Lee in Altoona 01.10.13 @ 10:08 am

And Curt? Keep up the great work (on HTP and Love Child). Why am I not surprised that such a fine brewer is a Pitt fan. Sophistication just goes with the territory.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 01.10.13 @ 10:16 am

Can I buy a growler online?

Comment by Lee in Altoona 01.10.13 @ 10:19 am

Oh, and keep sending beer to the Knickerbocker Tavern in Altoona, where I buy my Love Child.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 01.10.13 @ 10:19 am

also, I forgot to tell Chas that I am doing a firkin of HTP tomorrow. It has a secondary dry hop in the firkin that is all 7 C’s hops. Firkin is tapped at 5pm.

And don’t worry Yeti. The beer is not fruity. There are some fruit notes imparted by the different hops. Rest assured it is a very hoppy west coast style IPA.

Comment by usd121 01.10.13 @ 10:35 am

Curt, buddy of mine does a lot of runs up that way. He was wondering, is that the old firehouse you turned into a bar/brewery? Anyhow, he’s gonna look for you next time through.

Comment by Dan 01.10.13 @ 10:37 am

WHEN i get better i will go my wife likes beer
i will have one but i like mixed drinks my self
but i will get 6 for her and one for me.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.10.13 @ 10:48 am

day 27 no pitt DC

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.10.13 @ 11:27 am

Dan, Curt could give you more details, but the old firehouse-turned bar is up on Park Avenue. It’s different. But is a nice bar nonetheless.

Still, they’re not offering HTP. So screw ’em.

Comment by Lee in Altoona 01.10.13 @ 11:50 am

Thanks Lee, I’ll let my buddy know, that’s what he thought I was talking about. I’ll let him know it’s a different place to look for.

Comment by Dan 01.10.13 @ 11:53 am

I failed my 2012 resolution of finding a favorite beer that an adult would like. PBR remains king, but I don’t like the stares and judgement I feel when cracking open a cold one. In 2013 I will find a new favorite beverage that will give all the beer nerds boners.

Comment by Chris 01.10.13 @ 11:53 am

The 27th works for me.

Comment by sfpitt 01.10.13 @ 12:52 pm

Dan, he’s thinking of Mickey’s. We’re on Arch Street across from the post office.

Lee, no, we can’t ship growlers. The beer won’t hold up and I won’t sell something that can’t be drank the way I designed it and intended it to be.

Comment by usd121 01.10.13 @ 1:59 pm

usd121, what the chances of having Meadville native Sharon Stone in for your grand opening?

Comment by wbb 01.10.13 @ 3:11 pm

she’s from saegertown, where i went to scool. plua, our grand opening was june 30. she didn’t make it

Comment by usd121 01.10.13 @ 3:54 pm

usd121, Saegertown sucks. But you’re cool and I’m buying beer of you anyways. –Maplewood, Class of 89

Comment by Lee in Altoona 01.10.13 @ 4:10 pm

I went to the voodoo bar a couple of months ago. I may try to get my friends to go, they are PITT fans as well.

Comment by PITTPUP84 01.10.13 @ 5:20 pm

should be H 2 P

Comment by JtownGoldenPanther 01.10.13 @ 7:22 pm

It’s good to see an entrepreneur pumping a little life back in NW PA’s economy. God knows, the area needs all the help it can get. The fact you are a Pitt alum and a brewer doing it makes it triply awesome. This Mercer native & fellow Pitt alum salutes you sir!

Comment by Shawn 01.11.13 @ 2:53 pm

I plan on brewing my own homebrew H2P. It will be a very bitter beer given all the Pitt disappointments over the years. But very high in alcohol content so I don’t remember those losses.
