Open Thread: St. Francis-Pitt

Gametime: 7pm

How to watch: ESPN3.com (internet only)

There are two reasons I am doing this as an open thread tonight. The first is that the game is on ESPN3.com. This means tying up the computer watching the game, and I don’t feel like doing 2 computers at once. The second is that the Beef O’Brady Bowl is at 8pm, and I will probably have that on as well (note: there will be a second open thread for the Cristo-Bowl).  Need to watch a possible future coach do his thing. So there will not be total attention to the second half.

I’ll be checking in here and on Twitter.

Tomsula is for real we all thought it was a joke the stache could be back.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.20.11 @ 5:27 pm

Frank – where are you getting that from? Smizik? He’s the epitome of lazy. He linked to the same blog post that Chas linked to, did no further checking, then presented it as fact.

I do find it interesting that Zeise has been missing in action since Sunday. I know there hasn’t been much to report, but he has to have heard some chatter, right???

Comment by Pantherman13 12.20.11 @ 5:56 pm

Why are we playing St. Francis?????????

Comment by alcofan 12.20.11 @ 6:05 pm

PM13 –
Zeise is doing most of his speculating on Twitter. No sense throwing out the same unsubstantiated drivel as the rest of the press on the newspaper site, I suppose. Said he will be doing a post tonight. He’s actually been trying to sift through fact vs. fiction, apparently.

Comment by cnorwoodaz 12.20.11 @ 6:28 pm

Is it just me, or does it look like Pit is experimenting with wacky plays on purpose in this second half? They don’t NEED to score so they’re just throwing up crazy alley-oops and trying to put on a circus act.

Comment by pittbaster 12.20.11 @ 8:29 pm

I’d say it’s just experimenting in general. Trying to find the right chemistry with the players. Birch gone. Gilbert in. Playing with the rotation.

That said, it is obvious that the team needs to work on staying a little tighter even in the blowouts against the weak teams… Or else they will learn why the hard way in conference play.

Comment by Chas 12.20.11 @ 8:34 pm

Is it me, or does Pitt look especially vulnerable to back-door passes this season? The top teams in the Big East are going to feast on that…

Comment by Lou 12.20.11 @ 8:33 pm

So far, FIU looks like an average college team

FIU is an average college team … they do have a ton of little fast guys though.

Comment by wbb 12.20.11 @ 10:22 pm

Maybe someone can explain this to me. I know we all love Coach Dixon and so forth and so on.

But why is Nas playing against the likes of St. Francis. Did I not read more than several times that his knee (which was operated on like 5 weeks ago) is bothering him.

WHY IS HE NOT BEING RESTED AND LETTING HIS KNEE, you know the one that is bothering him, that was just operated on, GET SOME TIME OFF TO HEAL.

Just to make this clear, we don’t need Nas to beat St. Francis. We need him to beat Syracuse or Marquette or Uconn or WVU. Not fuckin St. Francis.

Anybody care to explain to me why Nas is playing against a scrub team?????

Comment by Emel 12.20.11 @ 11:49 pm

Emel – the worst part, Nas tweaked it (It might have been the ankle) in the second half, looked to be in pain. He had to come off the court, Pitt was up by more than 25. You would think his night would be over right? NOPE. Jamie put him back with like 8-10 minutes left. Insane.

Comment by boubacar aw 12.21.11 @ 7:35 am

Good, Bad and the Ugly

Good
+JJ Moore and Lamar Patterson playing together. Patterson is a good play maker and was able to do a good job guarding a two. Gibbs is playing too many minutes, Wright is not a threat to shoot in the halfcourt offense. Teams are really sagging off him and its hurting the offense. Moore is too talented (batshit crazy – but talented) not to be getting minutes
+Zanna – played very good defense, looks confident comfortable at both the 4 and
+Post play on offense – Pitt is getting the ball inside and getting good results
+Team Rebounding – A big concern coming into the season, will end up being a real strength. Everyone rebounds
+Malcolm Gilbert’s post defense. This kid will cash an NBA paycheck
+Steve Adams’ Tatoo

Bad
+Gibbs at point. His on ball defense is embarrassing. His lack of effort is astonishing. He causes problems for the rest of the team having to make up for deficiencies. He is not a playmaker. Can’t believe I’m typing this…we need Woodall back desperately.
+Cameron Wright’s reluctance to shoot.
+Isiah Epps

The Ugly
+Pitt’s health – they are way too banged up heading into the big east especially for a team that just went thru a…..
+CUPCAKE pre-conference schedule. We’ll see what happens in Mid January. But this schedule didn’t prepare them
+The whole Khem Birch situation

Comment by boubacar aw 12.21.11 @ 9:04 am

Yes, cannot wait to get Woodall back and Gibbs off the point. Moore deserves minutes. His D may still not be the best, but he’s a threat on O and, strangely, what I love most, he looks to get the ball into the post.

Glad to see Gilbert playing and contributing. I predict he’s going to have a big game or two against some of the top-tier Big East teams.

Comment by Carmen 12.21.11 @ 9:09 am

Watched the game the old fashioned way…on radio with lights out as I was beat.
I saw Gilbert in person against SCS and the Old Goat (er…I mean “Groat”) said what I thought…Gilbert has the wing span of a 767. He eats space and has good footwork. I agree, he will cash an NBA paycheck.
Moore and Patterson on the floor is lovely. The two get to compete against each other during the game and both improve their play.
Gibbs is out of position, but he knows he has to do it. Thank God he is not some head case…if he can’t play in the NBA he will certainly play overseas….European women are much sexier anyway.
Wright is battling between his ears and those fights can end quickly of continue for years.
Zanna’s interview in the PG and his play after the departure of Birch make me like him even more. Funny, but with such a soft touch from the free throw line he has stone hands on interior passes.
I ilke our depth and am glad we open on the road against ND…We could go into the Syracuse game with a helluva record but gotta play them one at a time.

Comment by SFPitt 12.21.11 @ 9:14 am

If Malcolm Gilbert does have a big game, do you think Hillgrove will get his name right?

He has called him “Marcus” repeatedly. Dixon finally had to correct him.

Comment by boubacar aw 12.21.11 @ 9:17 am

SFpitt–part of Zanna’s stone hands problems have to do with some passes to him that arrive below his knees. You are never supposed to pass the ball at anyone’s ankles–especially not a big. It is a sure turnover in the making. Pitt’s bigs, Zanna included, have had to deal with a lot of that so far this season due to our guard play. Nas is a different story since at 6-5 (or probably less) he will be much better at handling a pass below the waist.

Comment by pitt1972 12.21.11 @ 9:43 am

I am going to speak heresy here; but I don’t like having Woodall and Gibbs on the floor together very often. I believe that against certain matchups or when protecting a lead at the FT line at the end of a game that it is okay or even needed. However, IMO, it will not work well for the majority of many Big East games against taller longer backcourt defenders (Cuse, Louisville, etc.). One of the two guards in the game in such BE situations will need to be taller than Gibbs. Lamar getting more PT at the 2G (in the mode of Brad Wannamaker) is a good thing for that very reason.

Comment by pitt1972 12.21.11 @ 9:53 am

pitt1972- jamie dixon loves gibbs and woodall in the backcourt. he isn’t going to change. this season’s pathetic defense, and defensive approach, is proof. pitt plays great offense and bad defense. when ben howland was the coach pitt played great defense and bad offense. i’m not sure if either approach will lead to a final four.

Comment by omar 12.21.11 @ 11:08 am

I think it should be noted that the defense is improving, as are many of the youngsters.

Comment by Joe 12.21.11 @ 11:43 am

i agree. it has improved. it has gone from abysmal to mediocre.

Comment by omar 12.21.11 @ 12:04 pm

sometimes getting a stop is more important than getting a score. see butler and uconn last march. see xavier in 2010 and villanova in 2009.

Comment by omar 12.21.11 @ 12:06 pm

also, the abysmal defense hasn’t been from the youngsters. it has been from the veterans. dante taylor and ashton gibbs play such bad defense that it makes me angry.

Comment by omar 12.21.11 @ 12:07 pm

omar – a couple times last night I had to stop myself from jumping out of my seat and screaming at Gibbs. His defensive mistakes put too much pressure on the rest of the team.

What really makes me mad is that Dixon does nothing about it. He screams at the younger players and pulls them out of the game, but says nothing to Gibbs. You can’t preach defense the way Jamie does and let your “best player” get away with such an obvious lack of effort.

Jamie must have made the calculation that Gibbs’ shooting (and what it opens up for everyone else) more than makes up for his piss-poor defense. And he’s willing to live with it.

Not sure I agree.

Jamie needs to cut Gibbs minutes, and not just for defensive reasons. 38+ mins/gm is just too many. He’s not giving the effort when he’s out there. And I’m afraid he’s going to breakdown at the end of the year when he’s most needed.

Give some of his minutes to Johnson, Patterson and Wright. All three are at least capable.

Comment by boubacar aw 12.21.11 @ 12:55 pm

boubacar- i concur with all of your points. gibbs is playing too many minutes and, understadably, he isn’t giving maximum effort during each minute. coach dixon needs to recognize this and give him a rest.

it infuriates me that gibbs, taylor, etc. are beyond reproach because they are upperclassmen. the upperclassmen are playing terrible defense. pitt’s best defense of the night came with gilbert and moore on the floor. that is how we got to 27-4.

anyone who says that moore doesn’t play defense is jumping to a conclusion that simply isn’t true. i’ve watched every game this season. the kid gets lost, but so does everybody else. he tries harder than most of our starting 5 on defense. it’s unfair and jamie needs to evolve as a coach. just because your are junior or redshirt sophmore doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be yanked from the game when you don’t play hard.

Comment by omar 12.21.11 @ 1:11 pm

Pitt1972–I agree most of the passes to Zanna are low, maybe not as low an ankle depth, but your point is taken.
