LiveBlog: Senior Day

It’s the final home game (but hopefully not the final game) of the season. The Big East has to love that this game is the one that gets on ESPN2 at noon today. Not only featuring two 5-6 teams trying for the Beef. But featuring the two teams that set off the insanity of finding new teams for the Big East with their announcement of heading to the ACC. Of course, the actions of Syracuse and Pitt look oddly polite and decorous compared to the temper tantrum actions of WVU trying to leave for the Big 12.

This could be a long day. Pitt basketball plays at Tennessee at 5:15 on ESPN. I’m planning a second liveblog for that game. Depending on how this one turns out, I may be blackout drunk by the end of the second liveblog.

As you know, this is a moderated chat. The liveblog is supposed to be a chance for us to gather and share thoughts on the game, hopefully share in the joy/relief of a win (I know, those have been in short supply this year). Commiserate if need be, perhaps a little venting. Not every comment gets through. Especially duplicative, trolls, overly vulgar, personal attacks, or general stupidity as defined by me. Here’s a hint. If you do nothing but post “Tino sucks” or some variation over and over again, I’m probably not going to waste time approving it. That’s why your comment isn’t showing up. I think we got it the first thousand or so times it has been said to this point.

The live blog is below, but if you need to break it out from the site Click Here.

the 3 coachs that are leaveing are tony dews tony gibson calvin magee will that hurt recruting
chas we need a new post.

Wbb henryhudson i hope this does not hurt recruting hope they dont take any with them to AZ

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 6:11 pm

henry, look at my post above made at 12:23 … here is a copy: “There is no doubt that Tino is not a fit here. He may be more unconfortable in running this offense than we are watching him do it. But I refuse to villify him just because he our best option”

I assure you that I am OK if he never takes another snap as a Pitt QB (I’ve been saying that for 2 months now.) But until I am sure we have a better option …..

Comment by wbb 12.04.11 @ 6:13 pm

frankcan, i hope not as well, we look to have a decent class so far. i don’t think it will affect us at all. im still hoping some psu commits come our way.

Comment by henryhudson37 12.04.11 @ 6:13 pm

@Reed

Whoa whoa. Hold up. I wouldn’t just make it up that Tino may transfer. On campus talk (which probably stemmed from TINO himself talking to friends of his) is that he may consider transferring down to a D-2 program. How true it is, well only Tino may know the real answer.

And what I meant when I said “He must have realized that Graham is doing everything he can to replace him,” is that you all have been hearing the rumblings that, if the right fit for the offensive system, Graham would take a fifth year QB transfer to head his offensive attack. I doubt Graham would even mention it (especially knowing that Tino would catch wind of it) if it wasn’t an honest & open invitation to fifth year seniors out there who may be able to fit into Graham’s system, to consider coming to Pitt for their last year.

With that said, I believe Tino may think Graham is very serious (and I hope he is) about finding a quarterback to “temporarily” run the offense for next year, enabling Voytik to get a redshirt year under his belt to learn the system.

Comment by Timmeh 12.04.11 @ 6:32 pm

Rushel Shell Urban Meyer ohio state coach wants to talk to Shell to leave pitt and come to ohio state.
and this just when we lose the coach in charge of recruting to dick rod idont like the way things are shapeing up

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 6:45 pm

Hell ohio state all ready has 2 4 star rb all ready this year they dont need ours to if they get 3 4stars some one wont play go away meyer

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 6:49 pm

I figured we would lose Gibson, but I thought Clavin McGee just might have stayed, because of how well they were being paid, and because of the long term contract. Apparently it didn’t matter. After what we’ve seen this year, it appears that it more important to have the right personnel then two offensive co-ordinators. Gibson was regarded as a very good recruiter. Maybe after the Penn State job is settled there may be some good position coaches available.

Comment by Justinain 12.04.11 @ 8:01 pm

Wow, I’m quite shocked Cookie at the PG wrote that piece on Sunseri. It places more blame on TG than on Sunseri, but that’s irrelevant at this point.

I’m thinking that Cookie must know something, maybe he made a call to Sal or Sal called him. I’ve NEVER seen an article in the PG or the Pgh Press before that, THAT SUGGESTED A PLAYER TRANSFER !
And that player being the starting QB.

Well, all I can say…..as I said yesterday, I don’t see Sunseri sitting on the bench cheering on his replacement. Does anyone here?

And I hope Cookie is right.

Comment by Emel 12.04.11 @ 8:06 pm

this is a bad time to lose gibson.
with meyer around to take our players

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 8:10 pm

EMel hi bbva bowl agein we play smu we lose 3 coachs could hurt recruting and i also hope cook is right chas we need new post

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 8:14 pm

@FRankcan, tell that lying sack of sh*t Suburban Urban to stay the hell out of Western Pa and stay away from Shell.

He suddenly developed a health problem during our Bowl Game in 2009, stole the limelight from us winning 10 games and the headlines and then the very next day or two, ‘oh I didn’t mean any of what I said on Saturday. What a putz.

He’s not worried about his health in the high pressure cooker of a job at Ohio State is he?

Can’t stand that wanker. Him and Ohio Fake make a good match !

Comment by Emel 12.04.11 @ 8:24 pm

@Frank, well at least we’ll get to watch what a real spread offense looks like, playing SMU.

SMU has been resurrected by former Hawaii coach(when they were in the Sugar Bowl), June Jones.

Although who knows if I’ll even bother to watch unless TG starts Gonzo. It’s like not until after New Year’s day. What a stupid time to hold a 3rd rate bowl game. I mean a couple years ago I remember watching the New Mexico Bowl because it was only game on that day, and it actually turned out to be one of the better games in all of bowl season, BUT it was on like well before Christmas.

Comment by Emel 12.04.11 @ 8:32 pm

Suburban Urban will no doubt run a spread offense at Ohio State, home of 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

And this will transform the whole Little 11 into a spread offense league. Sea changes are coming for the Little 11, Diaper Joe gone, Suburban Urban in.

It will be interesting to see if Phile State hires a spread offense coach to keep up with Ohio Fake and the inevitable change coming to the Little 11.

Comment by Emel 12.04.11 @ 8:41 pm

Several comments on here are assuming Tino QBs the bowl game . Why ? You have 3 to 4 weeks before that game to get Gonzo or Myers ready to play. If the backup QBs didn’t sleep walk through the 12 game season then one of them should be ready in 3 weeks to play.Play for next season now!

Comment by Spindler’s Spirit 12.04.11 @ 1:36 pm

This is an excellent observation Spindler, if TG has no plans what so ever of playing Sunseri next year (and he shouldn’t), then THERE IS NO REASON TO PLAY HIM IN THE BOWL GAME.

We have a over a month of practice till the Bowl game, surely TG can get Gonzo or Myers or Anderson plenty of prep time. Hell the time we have to prepare for this Bowl game is akin to August training camp.

I’m all in with this observation Spindler. And so should TG.

Comment by Emel 12.04.11 @ 8:50 pm

EMel we lose 3 coachs and we go to bbva bowl to play smu and no one on line except you and i what the f k is up there is alot to talk abought what gives.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 8:53 pm

do you think it is becuse there is no post for dec 4th

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 8:56 pm

They must all be watching 60 minutes…Frank…haha

For those that think Sunseri had a decent game yesterday, Pitt should have routed any team that coughed up 6 turnovers. Yet it was only 26-20 late in the 4rth Q. It was 20-10 Pitt at halftime, so again Pitt tanked in the 2nd half, as the offense only socred 2 FG’s. The last TD, as you know was scored by the defense.

Again, and TG is well aware of this. Anytime the other team coughs up 6 turnovers, it shouldn’t be a 1 possession game late in the 4rth Q.

Comment by Emel 12.04.11 @ 9:00 pm

EMel i will be back must go check who is goin to what bowl outher than us

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 9:02 pm

Well the level of interest has declined as the season progressed Frank.

There would be 150-200 comments after a game. Most of that is attributable to the forlorn play at QB, people got tired of watching it.

Do you blame them?

Comment by Emel 12.04.11 @ 9:09 pm

Great. Steve Petersen is working on a deal. That should allow all of us to rest easier. By the end of the night, we will be in Division II.

And now we learn that 2 of our offensive assistants are leaving to join Coach Dick Rod, hiding out in the Arizona dessert. So, I guess that means the end of “high octane.” Too bad. I really enjoyed that.

I am sure that Coach Elmer Gantry is, right now, on his knees seeking divine guidance.

Dana Holgersen, in his first year as coach of WVU, takes them to the Orange Bowl.

Fed up. Fed up. F’n fed up with mediocrity. Every Pitt fan should right now be emailing Chancellor Nordberg, and ringing his doorbell and running. What a frigging joke our football program has become.

others are out here, Emel and Frankcan, and like me enjoy both your posts. Emel hit the nail on the head with me: Too much Tino this season. Frustrated with what might have been with a decent QB. Moving on to hoops.

Hail to Pitt for making a bowl, despite a frustrating season. Let’s hope Spindler’s suggestion above is read and implemented by TG and we see the wildcat early and often in the BBVA bowl. And no 60 minutes for me. Only mike wallace I watch is no. 17 for da Stillers…HTP

Pod panther 3 coachs drew gibson magee bad for recuriting and you are right in what you say.

Bossdaws good to hear from you i remmber when you helped with the WVU TROLL THAK YOU FOR THAT you are a good man nice to hear from you.

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 9:32 pm

You know, I really think the best coaching job this year, and it is not saying much, was with the defense. So losing some offensive nobodies named Calvin McGee and Tony Dews, and a natural born hoopie nobody in Gibson, doesn’t really bother me. With Urban Meyer taking over at OSU, and Dan Mullen taking over at Penn State, we were going to lose our top local recruits anyway.

So much for paying our assistants big money. Great call on that one too, Stevie.

Comment by PO'dPanther 12.04.11 @ 9:34 pm

After perusing the bowl lineup I don’t feel so bad that Pitt at 6-6 is going to a Bowl game.

There are 12 other 6-6 teams going to Bowl games and get this, EVEN A 6-7 Ucla team is going bowling.
Incredible, first time ever? Don’t know.

No Bowl games on New Year’s Day at all (that’s got to be a first), I guess the NFL is laying claim to January 1rst this year. Hope that’s not permanent.

I can’t remember a Bowl Game on the old new year’s day this year, January 2nd this year, having not one, but two 6-6 teams with Ohio Fake vs. Florida in the Gator Bowl. This is priceless, they should rename it: The Suburban Urban Coming & Going Bowl. And you don’t think this bowl stuff has anything to do with politics and money?

You should have learned that when two Pitt 11-1 teams were relegated to the Gator Bowl back in 79 & 80 which was played Dec. 30 or 31rst back then.
We got screwed out of another two possible National Championships. Somehow I think Diaper Joe had a hand in that!

This is news, for the first time EVER, the ACC has two schools (Clemson & Va Tech) in BCS Bowls.
Hopefully this is the first of many times for that, meaning two BCS Bowls.

Oh and nobody wanted Phile State except a first time ever bowl, something called the Ticket City Bowl. But SOMEHOW, it’s on Jan 2nd with all the other this year’s New Year’s day bowls. But it is relegated to ESPNU. As in we hate U. 🙂

Oh and Boise State and TCU got screwed again, but what’s new about that.

So that’s about all you need to know about this years bowl lineup gang. Watch & barf as needed.
haha

Comment by FRANKCAN 12.04.11 @ 9:40 pm

always here for ya Frankcan. We Pitt fans have to stick together. Keep us posted on the BBVA bowl updates. HTP

Comment by Bossdaws 12.04.11 @ 9:44 pm

Thanks for that Bossdaws,

Too bad we didn’t get the OC that TG had with him last year at Tulsa. Chad Morris I think, well they’re headed to the Orange Bowl as well.
If you saw Clemson play last night, against a very good Va TEch, team, that’s the way the spread is supposed to work. But hey they have a D1 QB, makes a difference.

Comment by Emel 12.04.11 @ 9:47 pm

Did Ron Cook watch the same Sunseri led football team this season we did when he decided to write that article?

Todd Graham knew Sunseri sucked from the very beginning. Graham tells his players not to curse…I wish people know how Graham spoke of Tino during the Spring game.

Comment by Timmeh 12.04.11 @ 9:50 pm

anyone watch the Houston and southern Mississippi game? That was some exciting football, TG style at its best.

Graham consistantly blames Tino for missing the reads. In this system their appears to be know reads in the passing game. Take the snap lock on the reciever either cutting across the field 5 yards from the line or a quick pass to the sideline. I love the calls when it is third and one or two and the call is for Tino to roll out to the short side of the field, wth the enter defense going that way minimizing any option he has, rather than one or two power runs up the belly.

After this season can anyone honestly be objective and say that TG is a better game coach than DW (and that was DW’s weakness). Bull shit about the first season. A schedule that was incredibly weak, Iowa and Utah terrible years, Maine and Buffalo, the enire Big East was worst than any year in memory, and N.D. lost 4 games. Four wins excluding Buffalo and Maine (4-6).
The schedule was much more difficlt last year.

Make every excuse possible, injuries, Tino (his stats. were better last year)8-4 would have been a disaster. TG must have obique sun glasses.
