Shaky-cam alert, as the increasingly receding-haired Coach Dixon (not helped by the camera angle) is asked about recruiting and Pitt and the team for next year.

As Zagoria says from the get-go, it is not like Coach Dixon can say much about recruiting. Not allowed to comment on specific players and Coach Dixon just says that Pitt is looking for the best players who will come to Pitt.

Since Coach Dixon was taking in the LeBron James Skills Academy, here are reports on top players by position from an anonymous figure who helped out at the camp. By positions:

Point Guards

Shooting Gurads

Wings

Big Men

Thanks, Chas. Great stuff.

I think Jamie let the Panther out of the bag when asked about this year’s team. He said, “We’ve got a lot of players…” or something to that effect.

Welcome to the family E.J. Banks!

another (highly-rated high school) transfer from Pgh area returns home; what may be lacking in getting high school commits is certainly being made up with transfers.

On the negative side is that Brandon Sacco, RS FR from Don Bosco Prep is leaving (which is puzzling if you read how the ooaches from the previous staff loved him) — guess he never fit in high-octane offense.

Wasn’t Sacco suspended or academically inelligible at the end of the season? But I agree, he was someone always talked about highly…

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 07.12.11 @ 10:37 am

I think grades were an issue just like they are with E.J. I just hope Sacco doesn’t transfer to Butgers.

I believe it’s a 2 year sit when transferring within conference (not sure) but if so, he will be inactive for 3 straight years.

Many times, when someone already redshirted, they will go to D2 (Nova or Delaware, etc)so they can play asap … but then again, we are getting our share of transfers who will sit out this year

with the opening of fall camp on Aug 8, football news beginning to pick up. A Gonzalez to be arraigned on 9/1, 2 days before 1st game.

plus, stories in both Pgh papers on Tino attending Manning QB camp.

What is the deal with Banks? I realize there is usually a year to sit out but I thought he was off the ND football team before last saeson started. Can he play this year if that is indeed the case?

Comment by notrocketscience 07.12.11 @ 1:38 pm

Hmmmm. E.J. Banks can’t make the “grade” at Notre Dame, but that does not appear to be an issue at Pitt. Is there a message some where in there?

Comment by BigGuy 07.12.11 @ 1:40 pm

according to attached, he will have to sit this year (I believe he will have 2 years eligibility after that) link to pittsburghlive.com

Transfer summary (per memory):

– 2 DBs from Michigan (Christian and V_____)as well as Banks will have sit out 2011
– WR Felton transfer from UNC is applying for hardship (?) due to family illness and may be eligible
– LB Ejuan Price is not a transfer but a true FR who is eligible this year
– RB Zach Brown is also not a transfer having graduate from Wisconsin and will be eligible

did I leave anyone out?

How many on this board remember Beano Cook?

Based on what I’ve read, it was a combination of things for E.J., but I don’t think his academics will be a problem at Pitt. I don’t see Graham lowering the bar with any of these transfers or recruits. None of these kids have character issues.

Comment by TX Panther 07.12.11 @ 2:05 pm

this is Beano’s 2nd biggest honor, behind having the media room at the Pete named after him.

Love the quote – “The only person more shocked in recent years over getting picked was Sarah Palin. I’ve come to the conclusion that if you live long enough, you’re going to get some type of award whether you deserve it or not.”

I believe his most pertinent quote was in response to SI’s story that Univ of Miami give up football back in early 90s, when said (probably paraphrased): “Miami will give up football when SI gives up its swimsuit issue”

Gonzalez is on campus and prepping with his teammates.

Here’s what I’m guessing he’ll receive: 2 (silly games) suspension.

Same old/same old.

Comment by steve 07.12.11 @ 2:17 pm

since I assume he has to show up for the arraignment, suspending him for Game 1 is actually kind of convenient

Mr. Banks is on the 2010 roster for Notre Dame as a Corner Back from Pittsburgh. No other notation. Their 2011 roster is not out yet, but neither is Pitt’s. E.J. was No.27 and I don’t believe saw any gametime. I was in school with Mr. Beano Cook in the ’50’s and on the Pitt News sports staff. Frankly(excuse me, Lord)I was not impressed. Who did impress me with their sports save were the following: Don Murdoch, Weinstein, Abrams and, of course, the “immortal” Myron Cope. May I say that was quite a collection of sports enthusiasts. Rev. George from Columbus

Sorry to learn about Sacco. He is a loss that cannot really be afforded considering the lack of depth on the offense line already.

Agree, Dr. Tom
