Bond Breaks

Well, there has been speculation since Pitt’s recruiting class for 2011 went to five with only three open spots that at least one of the recruits would have to attend prep school. That has now happened with Jaylen Bond announcing that he will do a year of prep and something else.

“While I look forward to playing basketball at the D-I level, I feel that, as someone who is 17 years of age, an additional year of development will allow me to enter my freshman year of college better prepared to contribute at a high level from the start,” Bond said in a statement released by PW coach Jim Donofrio.

“I have great respect and appreciation for the University of Pittsburgh, the coaching staff, and the players, and thank them for their belief in me,” Bond said. “This decision was made after a lot of thought by both myself and my family, and I am confident it is the correct one.”

In announcing that he is attending prep school, Bond has de-committed from Pitt.

This can be taken to mean one of many things:

1) It’s a mere formality since he is no longer bound by the NLI, and will eventually re-sign with Pitt.

2) Bond has re-opened his recruitment, but merely wants to make sure Pitt is still committed to him.

3) Bond decided/needed to attend prep school, but Pitt/Coach Dixon indicated that he might want to look at other schools.

4) Bond had to attend prep school, has had second thoughts about attending Pitt and is now looking at other options.

I’m sure there are other scenarios, but these are the most obvious ones.

It’s been a tumultuous couple of weeks for Bond. He injured his hip in a PIAA AAAA quarterfinal game — a hard foul that sent him to the ground.

With Bond and another teammate unavailable, Bond’s team lost in the semis to Chester.

No matter what, the best of luck to Jaylen Bond in his upcoming decision.

I realize that Pitt had some issues with the number of recruits that they had signed and that they were over the scholarship limits. How highly regarded of a prospect is Jaylen Bond?

From what I’ve heard, he’s basically another Nasir Robinson. Huge motor, plays hard, 6’7″ power-forward, with “no shot”–heard that from a D-II coach who’s scouted the area for years.

Considering our positional needs, losing Bond is not a hbig loss. We are crowded at PF/SF with Zanna, Taylor, Birch, Nas, Patterson and JJ Moore. Bond would most likely redshirt. Just doing cursory research Bond is not considered a top 100 player.

Slightly taller and lighter than Nas, not as highly regarded by recruiting services as Nas was (3 star on both Rivals + Scout), but still a top 150 national recruit. Given the depth at PF (and assuming Taylor will move inside to C) you have incoming McD AA Khem Birch, Nas Robinson, Talib Zanna, and JJ Richardon. This shouldn’t really hurt the Panthers given what they have there now.

What’s this I hear about Gibbs looking at NBA ? Have I been living in a dark hole, or is this something new to the mix ?

Comment by CompLit 03.30.11 @ 9:45 am

Nevermind !

I am hoping Gibbs stays next year because if not the odds are great we won’t make the big dance. Caught the ALL-AMERICAN slam dunk contest last night & Khem Birch finished next to last – (just ahead of Ronald Mcdonald). Hope he does better in the actual game tonight because of the glimpse I saw , he may be worse than Dante Taylor.

REPEAT POST…

First off, a center participating in a dunk contest is rare. It just shows the athleticism the kid must possess. Second, I agree with Chas that the giant band-aid over his eye – not sure how someone could miss that – had to affect him, especially with what he was trying to do on the first attempt. Lastly, I didn’t really care about the result, because odds are a guard or SF would win anyway. Plus, how many tomahawks, windmills or 360s are necessary in a real game? Just give me a nice two-hand slam and the 2 pts.

The big takeaways for me were the comments by Williams and Bardo:
* His offensive game is still very raw. Probably a big reason he chose Pitt. Defense-oriented team that has a reputation for developing big men.
* He has a huge wing span. Love those long, athletic guys. He, Taylor and Zanna should give Pitt quite an inside rotation.
* He fits the Pitt system well. ‘Nuff said.

A couple of nice in-your-face blocks and a slam or two on the other end tonight, and people will forget all about the dunk contest.

P.S. The “just ahead of Ronald McDonald” comment was funny. Good one. 🙂

Let me qualify the comments I am going to make by saying that I think Jamie Dixon is an excellent coach and very good for PITT

I think that it is not a good thing IF (and I say IF) you recruit a kid the entire year(s) and seal the deal with less than 3 months remaining before he arrives on campus and then pull a offer because you have over recruited the numbers. Look we all know the story of Khem Birch deciding to come early and how that put us in a difficult situation numbers (scholarship) wise but we definately don’t want to create a perception that we will recruit a kid and them leave him at the alter int he 11th hour. From the kids perspective he likely pass up a ton of solid D1 options thinking he was going to be a panther.

This one leaves me feeling a little uncomfortable.

It will be a good thing for Jaylen Bond going to prep school. It will help him with his academics and discipline. Good Luck to him, and hope he commits to Pitt

Comment by PittFan4ever 03.30.11 @ 11:05 am

The offer wasn’t pulled, this was Bond’s decision. He will likely not end up at Pitt now with them already over the limit and in out some very talented players in 2012, including some at the same position. Maybe he saw writing on the walls for PT down the road, but whatever the reason was, this was not Pitt’s decision.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 03.30.11 @ 11:26 am

in on some very talent players that should read.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 03.30.11 @ 11:29 am

Perhaps a red shirt was in the planning for Bond? He decided if I’m not going to get a chance to play next year I can go to prep school; work on my game and grades. This would still leave all his options open when he decided to make the jump to Div. I basketball. It also would leave the option of red shirting due to injury in the future. You can’t blame the kid for weighing all of his options and hopefully doing what is in his best interest.

Comment by virgil 03.30.11 @ 11:50 am

Maybe he knew Jamie Dixon was leaveing for Oregon.

A bad joke sorry.

I think Bond read the writing on the wall — someone was gonna have to go and he’d rather control his own destiny rather than having to fight it out for a spot at Pitt. Takign a year to let things settle at Pitt while maintaining the ability to go elsewhere is just a prudent move on his part.

He’s a good player and I wish him the best. The fact is, though, that he was the lowest ranked of our 5 incoming recruits and played the position we least need to worry about – PF, where we have Nas for 1 more yr, Zanna for 3 more yrs, and Birch for however long he stays, not to mention that Richardson. So, it seems to me his departure would make the most sense for Pitt as well.

I’m wondering if Gibbs is doing Dixon a solid by testing the NBA waters. Now that Pitt’s only one scholarship over, if Gibbs gets a bite in the NBA that helps everyone. That being said, I really hope Gibbs stays — we’ll need his senior leadership big time (not to mention skills) next year. I’m comforted by the fact that he may not have the NBA size/speed necessary to be drafted.

Comment by PantherP 03.30.11 @ 1:14 pm

correction: Bond isn’t necessarily the lowest ranked of the five recruits. That is arguably J.Johnson who also plays at a position that we don’t need immediate reinforcements – SG where we probably have Gibbs for 1 more yr, JJ. Moore, D. Johnson coming in plus Patterson perhaps Patterson and Cam Wright. Anyway, the magnitude of consequence is the same in either case. Both sides are in fine shape.

J.Johnson really seems into Pitt, btw, so I think it’s hard to see him decommitting. My guess is the next to go will be someone on the current roster who doesn’t see a future here and still has a future to salvage.

Comment by PantherP 03.30.11 @ 1:21 pm

richardson….bet he transfers

Comment by greg 03.30.11 @ 2:10 pm

Gibbs leaving early for the NBA might be the best thing for him and I wish him nothing but success if does, but he definitely won’t be “doing Dixon a solid” by leaving. Next year’s team is going to have serious trouble scoring the basketball if AG isn’t around.

Comment by maguro 03.30.11 @ 2:14 pm

Some news SG Myles Davis from Notre Dame Prep pitt is the favorite.

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.30.11 @ 3:05 pm

I should have said at this time for 2012 as posted on NBE.

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.30.11 @ 3:11 pm

My guess is that Bond’s decision was in large part due to Dixon’s recommendation. Dixon went to Philly after the Butler loss to see Bond, and he may have told Bond that he would be a definite redshirt and would probably benefit (both academically and basketball wise) by playing prep ball for the year. It also could be a diplomatic solution by Dixon for not having to release Bond at such a late date due to being over the schollie limit.

Note that this is pure conjecture (I didn’t hear it from a cousin of a studemt manager.)

Comment by wbb 03.30.11 @ 3:26 pm

wbb you are a funny dude! I love the qualified statement at the end.

Comment by PITT fan in Atlanta 03.30.11 @ 4:14 pm

A question for you we have only two open spots for 2012 and Steven Adams the 7 foot center has commited to one of them . It has benn said that they want a SG with the outher scholarship either Myles Davis or Omar Calhon but they also made a offer to Sim Bhullar who is a 7 foot 4 center. What if when it is time to sign the SG say Calhon says i want to sign and Bhullar says i want to sign you only have one spot who do you sign?

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.30.11 @ 4:17 pm

Both… then let someone else transfer

Comment by Dave G 03.30.11 @ 4:51 pm

Dave you know we dont like to that at pitt but you might have a point maybe maybe not

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.30.11 @ 5:28 pm

Some news PG John Johnson may have to go to prep school also because of grades.

Comment by FRANKCAN 03.30.11 @ 6:36 pm

Don’t forget that Khem Birch wasn’t supposed to be coming this year, he was supposed to be in the 2012 class. Khem coming early has basically forced Bond into this postion.
