Liveblog: Pitt-DePaul

You don’t take any game for granted in the Big East. Especially not road games. This team has stunned teams before in the Rosemont Arena. Oliver Purnell employs an uptempo, pressing style that speeds Pitt up, and can get them out of sorts. There’s the risk of a letdown after the emotional Syracuse game. There’s looking ahead to the Big Monday game with ND. There’s oth—

I can’t do it. I’m sure Coach Dixon is all about keeping the team focused. The players know what they have to do. Me, I won’t lie. I’m presuming a win here. Obviously, there is still a liveblog and plenty to watch. I’m just saying, that I really can not conceive a way that Pitt loses this without food poisoning playing a role.

The game starts at 4pm. It airs on ESPN FullCourt, FoxSports Pittsburgh, MASN, MSG, Brighthouse and ESPN3.com.

Hopefully, everyone knows the rules. Moderated chat. Try to keep in clean.

The liveblog is below, but if you need to break it out from the site, Click Here.

Damn it Chase, I wasn’t worried about this game till I just read this post. Now I’m convinced we’re going to lose!

Comment by Keith W. 01.22.11 @ 2:10 pm

Nova’s win at the Dome today was impressive especially simce Joseph was back. Our tough league games so far have been at home; there is still a long ways to go (including a game at Nova later on in the year.)

No road league game should be overlooked but must admit that I would be shocked if we were to lose today.

Chas and wbb,

Shzzssss. Don’t you know anything about not angering the sports Gods? On any given day…

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.22.11 @ 4:12 pm

Anyone have link to a live stream? I don’t get ESPN3

Comment by brendan 01.22.11 @ 4:53 pm

Panther catches Blue Demon. Panther plays with Blue Demon. Blue Demon tries to get away. Panther eats Blue Demon. End of story!

Comment by John in South Carolina 01.22.11 @ 6:35 pm

I know that it’s only DePaul but to hold them to 50 points at their place in a game where they were pressing and trying to speed up the tempo is impressive. Nice, workmanlike effort.

I thought Lamar Patterson was an unsung hero today, he gave Pitt great minutes at the 4 and was very useful in helping Pitt break the press.

Comment by Pabs 01.22.11 @ 8:17 pm

Check it out, people insist the PG is not anti-Pitt.
Here it is SEVERAL hours since the Pitt rout of DePaul has been in the books. And there is not ONE WORD of it on the front page of the PG website nor on the ‘Pitt’ page.

Hey we’re only going to the #2 ranked team in the country come Monday.

When you get no respect from your own local newspaper HOW CAN YOU EXPECT ANY FROM THE NATIONAL MEDIA !!!!

Comment by melvin bennett 01.22.11 @ 8:20 pm

dude, where is the chat about football recruiting?

Comment by henryhudson 01.22.11 @ 8:22 pm

What a crummy excuse of a newspaper and a supposed news organization.

The Pittsburgh Tribune is doing it’s job though

Comment by melvin bennett 01.22.11 @ 8:27 pm

You are absolutely correct Melvin. Yhe PG is not a Panther paper. If anything, they are anti-Pitt. Can.t fathom it, but that’s the way it has been since WW II. I kid you not! There are, of course, notable exceptions. There is a slight nod toward objectivity on occasion. But, yhe :old writers: are in such a deep negativity rut they can;t seem to shake it. The FACT is, gentlemen, Pitt will probably be #3 in the nation, come Monday. Rev. george

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 01.22.11 @ 8:42 pm

Nice story by John Grupp of the Trib. And it was posted by him at 7:01 pm. Here it is almost 9 pm and still no story, nothing, zilch on the PG (the Penn State Gazette)

Mentions that this is the 2nd best start in Pitt history at 19-1. Also that this was the largest margin of victory for Pitt in a BigEast road game since March of 2004.

link to pittsburghlive.com

Also has a quote from DePaul coach Oliver Pernell, saying ‘Pitt is a great team’.

I think we need to boycott the anti-Pitt PG, I know Chas has a link that Zeise put on his blog, but this is ridiculous. Zeise has also been AWOL for most of December & January as well during one of the most hectic times in Pitt history.

I also believe they intentionally tried to embarrass Pitt with that whole Holgorson affair and were possibly complicit in hyping this clown. Who nobody would have heard of without their hype of him. When WVU hired him, most people would have said ‘WHO?’ and sighed. Bottom line was Pitt didn’t even interview the guy as we only interview Head Coaches the first go round.

Comment by melvin bennett 01.22.11 @ 8:45 pm

I suspect there is aproblem with the online PG since the last update of the paper is at 5:53 pm, and I cannot manually update it further .. perhaps it is weather related.

Zeise is sovering Pitt women today who is playing UConn.

True, there hasn’t been much Pitt FB updates lately but until now, Fittipaldo has been following Pitt BB regularly.

Neiter paper has yet listed Pitt’s FB verbal recruit, Corey Davis. Pantherlair listed it mid-afternoon

Comment by wbb 01.22.11 @ 8:53 pm

the PG finally updated to 9:03 (1st one since 5;53) but the only added story is the Robert Morris ame .. still nothing on Pitt .. very strange. Pitt usually reports Pitt updates well before the TRib

Comment by wbb 01.22.11 @ 9:15 pm

Not to start a revolution, but I have been reading the PG for some 48 years and could not agree more. Any time they can show a neg bias to Pitt, they take their best shot.

I am in the printing business and have been for a long time. Do you realize how close the PG is to going out of business? Years of mismanagement and an editorial page so slanted that it would take an idiot not to see it, have lost them many readers and supported their competition and the start up of the Tribune.

I guarentee that if all the Pitt fans stopped buying and reading the PG for just 2 weeks, we could bring them to their knees financially.

How’s that for a solution…where is the old Sun Telegraph when we need it??

Comment by Dan 72 01.22.11 @ 9:57 pm

@Dan,

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review loses ~20 million annually and is simply buoyed by the surrounding regional papers it bought a decade or so ago.

Sounds like you have an axe to grind.

Comment by Hearst 01.22.11 @ 10:26 pm

Agree with Dan72, quit buying that rag years ago. Trib is the only one worth reading. PG sports might be a little better, but, rarely that many articles about Pitt anyhow.

To the fella above, yes, the hometown newspaper may report that way, but, we can lose the “disrespect” nationally talk. The disrespect card was over 3 or 4 years ago. Pitt has gotten high seeds, as my in laws in Cali and S. Carolina always say, “why is Pitt on every time I turn the friggin’ t.v. on”.

Constantly on Espn highlights, CBS sports, many announcers have picked Pitt to go to the final four the past few years, and allready this year.

Nope, time to give it up, Pitt is known as a basketball power, and frankly, we get talked about quite a bit, and yes, we’re on the tube constantly.

Comment by Dan 01.23.11 @ 12:50 am

The PG’s slant on anything is very 70’s ish!!

Comment by Dan 01.23.11 @ 12:52 am

“Every day since the semifinal loss to Memphis in the spring of 2008, Howland has been listening for the return of that heartbeat.”

Comment by steve 01.23.11 @ 7:11 am

steve, what is even more curious to me is that Ray Fittipaldo did not write the article that you linked. As the Pitt BB reporter, he does all the game stories as well as the between-the-game features … as Zeise does in football. In fact he wrote an article about DePaul’s coach Purnell in yeaterday’s PG.

Either (1) the Pitt-DePaul was not important enough to the PG to send their beat writer (which I never recall happening) or (2) maybe he got sick or some other abnormalty.

Comment by wbb 01.23.11 @ 8:26 am

The interesting thing about DePaul is that even though they are a cellar dweller in the Big East, they are not a bad team. Despite the the final lopsided score they were competitive for much of the game, until the Panthers broke it open at the end. The same can be said for Providence. We were very lucky to come up with a win in the final moments of the game. A lot can be said about the game to game grind that teams in the Big East face. It’s like going through a meat grinder. It can certainly toughen you up, but you just hope that there’s something left at the end of the season.

Comment by Justinian 01.23.11 @ 10:32 am

Justinian, the short answer is minutes played yesterday:
05 Brown, Gilbert 27
35 Robinson, Nasir 26
52 McGhee, Gary 23
12 Gibbs, Ashton 33
22 Wanamaker, Brad. 32
01 Woodall, Travon 15
11 Taylor, Dante 15
21 Patterson, Lamar 13
42 Zanna, Talib 5
44 Moore, J.J 7
55 Richardson, J.J 2

Our practices are tougher on the kids than a game like this (and why Jamie shortens practices as the season wears on)

One of my favorite indicators is how well a team plays after they play Pitt. Generally, not very well.

Comment by steve 01.23.11 @ 10:56 am

I was really annoyed by ESPN’s college basketball crew last night. They were discussing who should be ranked No. 2 considering this weekends games and only Jay Williams said Pitt. Andy Katz and Doug G. basically said Pitt doesn’t play anyone on the road and that Texas has a better resume. They both said Texas should be No. 2.

Pitt beats Texas at a neutral court.
Pitt blows out UConn at home.
UConn beats Texas.

Texas is better than Pitt.

It’s annoying but until Pitt wins in the NCAAs they will continue to be overlooked by the national pundits.

Comment by Brian 01.23.11 @ 12:53 pm

Its too early to worry about rankings.

Comment by alcofan 01.23.11 @ 12:58 pm

I’m not worried about rankings. I was annoyed that their perception. College sports rankings show how a team is viewed.

Comment by Brian 01.23.11 @ 1:04 pm

I really don’t want to see Pitt ranked any higher than No.3. Teams get fired up to the No. 1 ranked team and they don’t need a to give anyone extra incentive. The NCAA Tournament is all that matters anyway. If you’re ranked highly you will get a high seeding. As long as you a decent seed and play well, the tournament will determine who finishes where. It really doesn’t matter in January, it matters in March.

Comment by Justinian 01.23.11 @ 2:34 pm

I’m guessing 4 ’cause that’s where Pomeroy now has us.

Comment by steve 01.23.11 @ 2:55 pm

Pitt’s gonna be either #2 or #3…Pomeroy doesn’t “have” us anywhere, the numbers just have us as the 4th best team in the country. However, our defense has clearly improved over the course of the season, so I think our defensive efficiency number is a little high (low ranking). Honestly it doesn’t matter in this league–the only thing that matters to the teams are the Big East standings, and I don’t think having the #2 ranking would put any bigger of a target on our back than the 7-0 record we have.

Comment by merlin 01.23.11 @ 3:05 pm

merlin, I understand Pomeroy’s model. And sportwriters are on top of “his” rankings…

Comment by steve 01.23.11 @ 3:18 pm

Steve–didn’t mean to imply you didn’t. I’d agree with the fact that Pitt probably SHOULD be 4th in the country after rankings are considered (OSU, Duke, Kansas, Pitt), but considering Kansas just lost yesterday, and Pitt has won 10+ in a row, one would think the voters would do what they usually do and drop KU just a few slots, enough to bump Pitt up a spot or two. As for Syracuse, they’ll obviously be ranked below, so we’ll either be 2 or 3 (if Duke gets moved up).

Comment by merlin 01.23.11 @ 3:31 pm

Agree with Merlin. We’ll be #2 or #3. Kansas losing at home was big. Polls are closer to the eyeball test and not statistics… I’d love to be #1 at some point, but it will be tough since Duke plays such a weak schedule compared to us the rest of the way. OSU still has 6 games against opponents, Kansas has 5, and we have 4…I was really impressed with OSU yesterday- especially their Freshmen.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.23.11 @ 3:34 pm

It amazes me when fellow Pitt followers get mad at poundits for calling out Pitt for lack of hardware or credentials. This is what they do to satisfy the on-demand culture of today…make gross generalizations and live by the eye test and past history. And, for most of these guys, we’re a Big East version of Bo Ryan’s Wisconsin. Great regular season team, always a tough out in the tournament, but no NC rings to be considered elite. Now, I think these gross generalizations are absolutely ridiculous and ignorant…but it is the fact of 21st centurt sports broadcasting.

Funny thing is…the minute we will the NC (and it will happen)…is the point, from that day on, where we will get perception equity and all of these guys will turn into revisinonists and marvel how “we saw this coming from Pitt’s strong ascension to the top”….

Laugh when it happens, and ignore what the say now.

Fortunately, NCAA BB NC is won on the COURT. And perception means far less than the sham that is CFB.

Comment by Pauly P 01.23.11 @ 3:45 pm

Pauly P–I love the comparison with the Badgers for Pitt. The good news for Pitt, compared with Wisconsin, is that Bo Ryan takes a lot of 2-3 star recruits and has them play tough, but their recruiting isn’t going anywhere. Jamie’s building on his success with the “little guys” by getting Dante Taylor, Khem Birch, etc. Bo Ryan’s recruits for the next few years are still 3-star recruits, some of whom aren’t even ranked at their positions. Jamie’s finally going to have that talent it takes to win a Final Four or NC.

Gary Parrish puts Pitt #2 in his Top 25 (and 1):

Disgusting move by Bob Huggins.

I wonder what that kid must have done for his coach to belittle him like that. Maybe he didn’t turn out to be as talented as Kevin Jones, but that’s no reason for a coach to say those kind of things. Any respectable coach would either make a non-comment or say something about it not working out and wishing that student the best. But to call him a “nonentity” and admit he started only to motivate OTHER players…well, that’s just sad.

Comment by merlin 01.23.11 @ 9:17 pm
