Olack Unknown

With Signing Day a couple weeks away, lets’ face it. The angst (as such) around Pitt fans is with our own selfish interests. It’s been annoying, frustrating, and yes, understandable at losing a bunch of very good recruits to other programs that have poached the former staff and just re-recruited the kids amidst Pitt’s coaching carousel chaos.

Still, it sucks for a lot of the kids who committed to Dave Wannstedt and Pitt. It has been a complete mess on their end, and what if you aren’t one of the top recruits in the group? Do you stay with Pitt if it is still your best offer as far as conference and name recognition? The scholarship is going to be honored, but are you sure about how you will fit with the new staff, and what they want to do?

This seems to be the dilemma faced by Justin Olack.

A 3-star WR from Massillon, Ohio.

Then the Panthers hired Todd Graham, and all the movement has made Olack, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound sure-handed wide receiver, take a second look.

“That’s up in the air,” Massillon head coach Jason Hall said of Olack’s commitment to Pitt. “I think he looking at Cincinnati and he visited Toledo. The Pitt staff was in today, and Justin is going there this weekend.

“He’s looking at all his options.”

Olack, was still solid with Pitt when Haywood was hired because the WR coach on Haywood’s staff was his former OC at Massillon. While not an elite-potential receiver. He is a key possession, dirty-work WR (Insider subs).

Olack is a big, athletic possession receiver that has great hands and no fear going over the middle of the field. He is tall and well built, has a thick build and knows how to use his frame to gain position and shield the ball from the defender. He is essentially a short and intermediate target with big upside as a redzone player on the jump ball.

Still, Olack is on the list of ten players visiting Pitt this weekend. Hopefully things will be sorted out with a meeting. The list is Artie Rowell (C), LaQuentin Smith (MLB), Floyd Raven (CB), Malcolm Crockett (RB), Corey Davis (RB), Keyarris Garrett (WR), Rodrick Ryles (S), Darius Patton (WR), Jeremiah Bryson (RB), and Olack.

As of right now, there are five players visiting next week. Lafayette Pitts (CB), Robert Trudo (OG), Sam Collura (TE), Jason Frimpong (CB) and Cortez Johnson (CB).

And if you are wondering, Pitt and Todd Graham haven’t given up on the decommits like DT Marquise Wright.

“I’d say it’s down to Michigan State, Rutgers and possibly Pitt,” Wright said. “I spoke with the Pitt coach [Todd Graham] Tuesday. He’s trying to get me back on campus. It’s a longshot.

“I’d say it’s 75 percent Michigan State and 25 percent Rutgers. I loved the Michigan State campus and the coaching staff. The facilities are top-notch and they have a good criminal justice program. I’m not sure what I want to do yet, but it’ll have something to do with law enforcement.

An admitted longshot, but we can hope.

Does anyone know if Pitt has a legitmate shot of landing Simmons or Jackson from McKeesport? I noticed that they both went from no intrest in Pitt, back to medium because of the pursuit from Grahams coaching staff.

Comment by winedogs 01.20.11 @ 12:26 pm

Worried i know dont be negative but i have a feeling that letter of intent event will be a failure. only one new commit so far and i read every thing and the players say if he was here sooner he is working very hard but they are all looking at outher schools now even WR from tulsa is thinking abought tulsa agean. i am worried i hope he pulls it out but would fell better if i saw some commits time is so short.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.20.11 @ 1:10 pm

Excellent outlook on the horizon for Pitt fans /Alumni…Now that Todd Graham is in place with his high octane offense, this is perfect timing to offer the great experience that is the Univ. of Pittsburgh. Graham should go all out to land MEGA – RECRUITS ; Rushell Shell & Brendan Nosovitch for next years class. Pitt has NFL caliber facilities and a world class academic & social education located in a safe urban setting. If Pitt is suitable for Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino, Hugh Green, Bill Fralic, larry Fitzgerald & Darelle Revis , I think these young talents can restore Pitt’s place among college football’s elite !

Comment by ROCKY20 01.20.11 @ 1:27 pm

I don’t blame those who de-committed after all of the turmoil here. At the same time, I hate these candid comments: “it’s a long shot;” “Pitt is on the border;” etc. It hurts.

It’s as if these recruits lack the grace to properly manage their extreme fortune. True, we want you to come here and play football and, at the moment, you have all of the leverage. At least pretend to acknowledge that you will also benefit from a top-tier education (and scholarship, to boot).

UGH! It is insulting (1) to those who could not get into Pitt academically OR athletically; (2) to those who did get in (in the sense that the education they value so highly is not attractive enough to someone who will get it for free); (3) to the current players (these guys didn’t even MAKE THE TEAM yet); and (4) to those who have Pitt degrees.

Biased as I am (i.e., how could anyone turn down Pitt!?), I feel that there is disrespect in these comments. Kids today! If you are going to turn us down, do it. Don’t be so casual about it. Regardless of where you go, you have to get the grades and you have to make the team.

I doubt recruits read comments of fan blogs (maybe they do?), but if so, we want you to come and further the excellence of this University. If our coach deems you fit enough to be recruited, I think it’s presumed you will do that on and off the field. If you don’t feel a reciprocal desire to be here, please exhibit the grace to politely decline without providing us false hope or insulting an institution that anyone would be lucky in which to be involved. Supposing you do decline, best of luck in your future endeavors! Really!

Comment by A 01.20.11 @ 1:28 pm

Todd Graham certainly was left with a big hole to dig himself out of with the mess with the firing, hiring, firing, hiring of head coaches and assistant coaches. I have been surprised at the way Graham came in and has pretty much single handedly pulled the Pitt community together when it seemed that it was coming apart. No predictions but if anyone can pull a rabbit out of his hat, this guy seems to be the one. I also expect that if things don’t go that well he isn’t going to make excuses or belly ache, he is just going to suck it up and do the best with what he has.

Comment by KeithS 01.20.11 @ 1:28 pm

Have you noticed that the vist of new players are all from TEX or NEW ORLEANS so the coachs from tulsa are working hard 8 players for vists from that area but the old Michigan coachs have brought in just one that i know of for a vist.

Comment by FRANKCAN 01.20.11 @ 1:30 pm

An “I am not interested in Pitt at this point in my search;” “Pitt is a great institution, but not the right fit for me;” or “I am considering Pitt among several other schools” are appropriate and classy ways to handle these questions.

Comment by A 01.20.11 @ 1:32 pm

A, you can’t fault these kids for being honest. You’ve got to be realistic, for them, it’s not about the free education or insulting an institution, which I’m sure is not their intent. It’s about football, 100%. And like Coach Graham said – kids commit to coaches. These kids committed to Wanny and his staff, and when he was fired, they probably felt like the rug was pulled out from under them. If they feel slighted like that, who can blame them? They’re 18-year-old kids. Expect coaches to be graceful with their words, but don’t knock the kids when the truth hurts.

Comment by 85 01.20.11 @ 1:46 pm

Fair enough

Comment by A 01.20.11 @ 1:47 pm

No complaints on the recruiting effort by Graham and company. They’re doing everything they can and then some. Asking them to undue the damage that comes naturally with a coaching change and the time lost with the Heywood debacle is a bit much.

It might be too late in the game but they’re making an impact with the effort that will pay dividends with coaches and underclassman next year. Embrace the positives and don’t dwell on the negatives.

Comment by FG 01.20.11 @ 2:45 pm

I think this year is going to be a bust in recruiting. I think Graham got overenthusiastic when he talked about recruiting for this year at his press conference. He should get what he can and save some slots for next year. Does anyone know if Chris Burns has left school?

Comment by John in South Carolina 01.20.11 @ 3:33 pm

Don’t give up yet. Graham is running his two minute drill. It ain’t over until the fat lady sings and I don’t hear no fat lady. Not yet anyhow.

Comment by Pitt Is It 01.20.11 @ 3:35 pm

Not to beat the dead horse, but this rest at the feet of SP. Had he handled the situation with Wanny and the FIRST search for a new coach, chances are we wouldn’t have lost as many recruits as we will.

That is not to say that we would have kept everyone, but I do believe that we would have kept many more than we will now.

TG is doing all the right things, imagine if he would have had almost an extra month had he been hired first.

steve, you are being protected by MN, bit we all know, IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO GO.

It appears that Graham and his coaches are going to work until the very last moment on Febuary 2nd to get any recruits they can. Remember they don’t have to have 18 or 19 recruits. They have to bring in 5 or 6 to complement the 7 or 8 palyers that have stayed with Pitt. If they get more, great, but if the guys they get, can play, then they will be ok. We have talent already on the team and next year, they can try to bring in a bigger class.

Comment by Justinian 01.20.11 @ 5:09 pm

Let’s give Coach Graham some time here, he’s only been on the job a little over a week.lol

Since the star ranking is no guarantee and we’ve all agreed in the past, that teams like Boise & TCU and Utah have all done very well in the last decade with for the most part, no or minimal 4 star players, it’s all about coaching them up. And I feel very confident about Coach Graham’s abilities to coach em up.

While I would like to see all these recruits that we want come to Pitt, it’s their loss not ours, there are plenty of kids who will embrace Pitt and 20 years later will remember what a great decision they made. Maybe they too will be in the Hall of Fame (college or NFL), a former great NFL player or a network TV personality like former Pitt players, Mike Ditka, Mark May, Tony Siragusa, Bill Maas or the late great Ironhead Heyward.

Hail to Pitt !

Comment by TwilightZone 01.20.11 @ 5:20 pm

Brendan Nosovitch has said that he has always dreamed of playing for PSU. It would be GREAT to get him. He is not huge, but still looks very young. He could still grow a lot in the next year.

I find it interesting that the players were really NOT happy about the early morning practices with Haywood, but are already running and lifting at 6 am, three days a week, with the new staff, and are really fired up. The ex Michigan/WVU coaches have relationships from recruiting some of the current players, and have done a lot to get them on board, and allay their fears. There may not be enough time to do much with this class, but having the current players buy in is at least as important.

Comment by Pwmcdupitt 01.20.11 @ 5:57 pm

^^^ Pwmcd – you hit the nail on the head. PITT fans are worrying about a recruiting class that will have an impact in 2013 mostly and are glossing over the fact that the real job of coaching will be to get the starters already on roster playing completely different systems on both offense and defense.

This is no mean feat either. Screw this up and you can kiss the 2012 recruiting class goodbye also. THIS is what I’m worried about.

PITT can weather one down year in recruiting – but two in a row will shift the ground under the program in a way it may not recover from for years.

Comment by Reed 01.20.11 @ 6:29 pm

Have you noticed that no QB have been brought in for a vist that must mean that the 4 QB we have must be thought of as good enough to win in comeing year. or at least 3 of them.

Kind of off topic except for the fact that one doesn’t necessarily have to be a 3 or 4 star to make an impact in college

Frankcan,

Or maybe there isn’t a QB that has interest in Pitt that is better than what is already on the roster?

Comment by BnG 01.20.11 @ 9:09 pm

Nosovitch is not a D-1 QB – more like D1 AA or D2.

Comment by waxonwaxoff 01.20.11 @ 9:41 pm

What worries me most is that you guys are going to worry yourselves into a stroke before LOI day and than there will be even more empty seasts at Heinz Field next year…

Seriously, Graham is clearly a high energy guy and is beating the bushes for recruits. Thats all you can ask for at this point.

Thanks to Dan72 for the words of assurance. Hope you’re right!

Comment by dock71 01.20.11 @ 10:38 pm

I’m surprised that Jameel Poteat has not taken a second look at Pitt. He would have a big role in Grahams high powered offense. Plus Pitt facilities are superior also. Their stadium only holds 35,000

Frankcan – Zeise doesn’t cover recruiting for the P-G so there’s a reason he’s not writing articles on PITT football at this point. Plus – his vacation time was curt short due to the firings/hirings so he’s probably taking that now…. in all seriousness. Given that there is no PITT football news other than recruit’s visits, his absence is understandable.

There are some things that to a father with a family are more important than PITT football.

Comment by Reed 01.21.11 @ 5:15 am

Reed, Zeise absence is far from understandable as our Pitt “insider” and he has been out to lunch for two months. It’s ok, this blog and the Tulsa newspapers give us more at this point. Given the new coach and the craziness around this program for last 8 weeks, he absolutely should be all over any rumors / news around recruiting.

@ dock71, I haven’t seen many posts from you in the past so I’m assuming you may be new to the message board. You got it right, this site is populated by a majority of hand wringers and whiners but we must all have our forum in this digital age. I agree with you, we need to relax! What’s going to happen will raise quite a few eyebrows around town come 2/2. This class is going to be small but contain those recruits that need to be utilized within the near future to implement Graham’s systems. I won’t be surprised if half of this year’s class see playing time at some capacity this coming season. There will be two or three surprises that materialize seemingly out of thin air in a couple weeks. I don’t agree with Graham’s assessment that this class “will be the best ever”, but it will be filled with quality recruits that will be essential players needed to immediately fulfill the position requirements of his “O” & “D” philosophies. Furthermore, Graham is already planting the seeds with some HS junior recruits for the 2012 class because he is well aware that he will have available scholarships to parlay with come next year. This guy is on the ball and is planning for the future two weeks into the job. I concur with BnG that there aren’t any available QBs out there that have more potential than Myers and Gonzalez right now. I feel Myers is the guy, we’ll see. Tino will be delegated a back up role in 2011 and then never see the field again after one of these guys takes off in the new system. This is going to be fun to watch. This team is going to go through a metamorphosisover the next couple of years. I agree with Reed though that I hope Graham doesn’t stumble badly while he sorts this whole transition out by putting up a 6-6 season or something worst come next season. THAT would be bad, very very bad. But if he can just put 7 or 8 in the win column next year, that will keep the heat off of him while he builds on that momentuem, then lookout, it will be a fun ride, espeicially with TCU coming in to the BE and the coaching changes forthcoming at WVU. Hang on, here we go!

Comment by Dr. Tom 01.21.11 @ 7:56 am

Waxonwaxoff,
Nosovitch is most certainly a HIGH D-1 prospect. I watched every CCHH game this year, its my almamater. He is more advanced than Pryor was at any point in his highschool career and is almost as physically talented. Nosovitch has D-1 size , about 6-2 210lbs, D-1 speed in the 4.5-4.6 range. He is the only QB in PA history to Throw for over 3000 and run for over 1000. Considering the quality of QB’s this state has produced that is a remarkable feat. Furthermore he can make all the throws, 10-15 yard outs, deep seam passes, slants, deep posts etc.

Interestingly, my mom actually teaches him, he gets a stack of recruiting mail every morning and he has been visited by a few SEC teams and Many Big Ten teams already.

Comment by JCE 01.21.11 @ 9:05 am

Graham might have a tough time this year because of the resign, hire, fire, hire but his high energy style coupled with his infectious enthusiasm will definitely sway future recruits towards Pitt.

I think he can possibly sign 15 players this year, but when he settles in and is able to spend time with potential recruits and high school coaches look out! The guy has tons of charisma and charm.

Comment by Reggie Dunlop 01.21.11 @ 9:18 am

Looks like today is a huge day for recruiting with over 10 recruits scheduled to visit. I’m here in sunny (well today more like rainy) Florida but hear that the weather in Pittsburgh is awful today. I hope this doesn’t screw anything up.

Whoever has any info on today, please keep us posted. Thanks.

Anyone good on the O or D-lines headed our way? It’s great that we have some folks at the skill positions signed or considering but the reality is that the game is won in the trenches. We need help – especially on the O-line.

Comment by Bobby 01.21.11 @ 9:43 am

There is not a newspaper in the country that delves into the “behind the scenes” recruiting or hiring processes the way many people on here seem to expect. With all the blogs and sites that specialize in putting out or directing us to that info, I can’t understand what Zeise or another newspaper reporter would be expected to add.

Agree with JCE– it seems very petty.

Comment by Jason 01.21.11 @ 9:49 am

@ Dr. Tom,

Well said. No, this isn’t going to be the biggest and baddest recruiting class known to man that will rival that of Texas or Florida. However, I am already more than happy with what Graham has done. From what I’ve read, he has spent day and night selling the University with enthusiasm and charisma. If we can lock a nice class (albeit likely small) that plays with fire and fits into Graham’s systems then that is fine by me. Next year Graham will have a ton of scholarships to work with and an entire year to build relationships. Hopefully we can have a successful year next year so the perception doesn’t get twisted that Graham’s system will not work at Pitt. On the other hand, if we have a nice year next year, perception may be along the lines of “just imagine what Graham can do with a couple of his own recruiting classes.” Time will tell but there is a lot to be excited about.

H2P

JCE – I like Zeise but my expectations for him have been lowered. He may not be paid for updating his blog often or to be an “insider”. it would help him and PG to just define either a weekly column or weekly blog update so people would not slam him for going dark for days. As the program improves, the coverage of the program from national media will improve as well.

Biggest issue right now is on the lines especially replacing Karabin at Center and Pinkston at L Tackle on the “O” line. There are three recruits coming in at this point to help fill those holes. One is actually from last year’s recruiting class but had some academic issues to sort out, spent last year at Milford Academy, Khaynin Mosby-Smith. Another new guy just brought in by Graham himself is JUCO transfer Zenel Denhasaj, then a hold on from Wannestedt’s recruiting efforts is Artie Rowell. All are BIG boys, talent unkown.
