One Helpless Hall

There are games where one player dominates and changes the game. There are others where a team plays so far over its head, or a team plays so far underwater. This was not anything like those games. This was a game where a team played a simple game of using its strengths to exploit the weaknesses of the opponent.

Pitt is blessed with outstanding depth at virtually all positions. Seton Hall not so much, and even less in the front court. That quickly became an area Pitt targeted in a relatively easy rout of Seton Hall, 74-53.

The Pirates have a frontline of Herb Pope and Jeff Robinson and that’s about it. The one other guy that tries to spell both is a true freshman. That means a relatively undersized frontcourt can’t play aggressively for fear of picking up too many fouls. Pitt’s game plan was to take advantage of this by going inside, often.

Gary McGhee had an easy double-double in only 21 minutes with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Nasir Robinson had 8 points, Dante Taylor had 7 points and 5 boards and Talib Zanna had fun with 10 points and 4 rebounds in only 13 minutes. 38 out of Pitt’s 74 points from the front court. Balanced. Yes. But Pitt has been relying on the guards and wings to do most of the scoring. This was a change-up and the team had no problem adjusting to the game plan.

That Pitt’s front court dominated was a good thing since Pitt’s 3-point shooting had a rare off-night. Gibbs struggled. Brown had issues. Travon Woodall, of the .300 shooting from outside decided to go 2-2 to keep things confusing.

Pitt was never in danger in this game. Unlike Ohio State, Duke, Syracuse, Kansas, Villanova, Louisville, Michigan St. and Tennessee. All teams that struggled badly in the first half and in many cases thoughout the second half before getting the win. Pitt didn’t shoot great, but controlled the rebounding and slowly, steadily pounded the Pirates into submission.

A nice enough win, setting up a huge Monday night game with the ‘Cuse.

I agree .. I was amazed how non-competitive the Hall was. Their only hope is if Hazell can get back in the groove.

All will be different on Monday … 12,500+ instead of 9600, a top 4 team that appears to be on top of its game, and talent throughout the lineup … should be lot of fun

Box score for last night’s game lists the attendance at 9236. I was there and while the Zoo was well represented there is no way there was anything close to that many people at that game last night…

This game went about as perfectly as one could hope for with ‘Cuse just two days away. I have to admit I was worried about SHU–getting Hazell back, crowd not really into it with the Steelers game, #4 Syracuse coming to town…this had the makings of a trap game. Not that I thought we would lose, but that it would be close. Instead, no player plays 30+ minutes, Pitt has a double digit lead the entire time, and the team will be well-rested for Monday night. Not to mention that Kris Joseph might not even be available.

It was hard to judge the attendance from bodies in the seats. The Steelers game was on the big screen in the lobby and on many small screens around the Pete. I saw a lot of empty seats early but after the Steeler game ended a lot of seats filled so I assume that many were watching football thru the first half of the Pitt game.

W. Virginia rushing the court is hilarious. Good win for them though. We should be able to beat them twice this season.

The half time pep talk from Graham indicated that Tino won’t be the qb. With all that graham said the offense would do the last thing was throw deep, that eliminates Tino.

Comment by Marty 01.16.11 @ 3:47 pm

That’s super encouraging Marty. Graham can’t help but come to that conclusion when he looks at the game film. Which I’m sure he’s already done or at least some of it.

Maybe that’s why SP didn’t hire a ‘Pitt man’ for the job, they’d(a Pitt man) be more likely (indebted) to play the son of a ‘Pitt man’ than Graham is.
Let’s hope so.

Whatever happened to all the love for Sunseri? “Tino Time!” Oh yeah, this past season happened…

The backup QB is always the most popular guy in town.

Myers time!!

Comment by Jason 01.16.11 @ 5:04 pm

maguro, Wanny did truly screw up this year not playing Myers.

Ask anybody on the team.

Comment by steve 01.16.11 @ 5:15 pm

The best thing Wanny ever did was not play Myers Steve. Thank God he actually made one good move and didn’t play a true frosh who wasn’t ready (only started one year of HS football) and waste him playing in a crap offense. Quaterback of the future? by all indications yes. But it was good to not waste him when he wasn’t ready.

Henry, indeed it turned out for the best. Just hope he’s fully on board.

Comment by steve 01.16.11 @ 5:28 pm

Damn near every backup QB is a savior in waiting until he actually gets the starting job. Then he sucks and needs to be replaced by the next savior. That whole sequence certainly fits Tino to a tee. Hopefully Myers is everything we hope he is, but time will tell. One thing is for sure, though, I have a lot more faith in Graham’s ability to develop QBs than I ever did in Dave.

Comment by maguro 01.16.11 @ 5:49 pm

maguro, Myers is no illusion, he’s the real deal.
