One thing I learned doing marathon liveblogs at FanHouse. They rarely work that well. Everyone gets a little weary. Bigger gaps in the comments. It just takes a toll. Yet, it is always fun to try.

So there is some significant overlap of the football and basketball. Plus, for those not in Pittsburgh or around NY the football game may be the only option. We’ll give it a shot and see what happens.

Now here’s what everyone needs to remember. This is a moderated chat. Personal attacks are not going to get through. Things have tended to get overheated with football. I understand the emotions. That said, if you can’t keep them in some sort of check before putting them on the computer, we will do it for you. If you just won’t stop, banning is an option — just so Luke and I don’t have to read this crap.

The liveblog is below, but if you need to separate it out for easier viewing or script problems you can break it out by Click Here.

Perfect example of people on here being negative just for the sake of being negative is saying Greg Romeus was either underdeveloped or wasted. Are you seriously kidding me? Greg Romeus was a 2 star recruit. Greg Romeus actually shows how Wanny can develop some players. ALL schools have players that didn’t live up to their lofty hype when they were recruited.

I believe Wanny should go. But I think we are focusing way too much on Wanny. What about the other coaches like Frankie Cigs and Phil Bennet. Wanny isn’t some Belicheck’esque coach that micromanages everything. I’m sure both had a large say over play calling. I personally thought the offensive play calling was pretty bad this year.

Excellent point, Carmen. I agree.

Has the AD addressed the football situation through the media? Or is the game of silence to change the topic Pederson’s plan?

Comment by TonyinHouston 12.06.10 @ 6:15 pm

The Pitt trustees met to award raises to Nordenburg & others. I wonder if football was even mentioned as maybe a problem? You wonder?

Comment by TonyinHouston 12.06.10 @ 6:24 pm

There is a lot of complaining here about our brand of football being “boring.” The object is to win; tough defensive struggles and grinding, 5-yard runs between the tackles have their own charms. I would be thrilled with a season of 13-7 wins. 42-38 losses don’t do much for me. The Wannstedt haters are really reaching when they complain that the Panthers don’t provide them enough entertainment. It’s enough that we haven’t won like we should; let’s keep the focus on that.

Comment by Navy Panther 12.06.10 @ 6:27 pm

I could care less if we run the damn winged T, if we win football games who cares…

Comment by TJ 12.06.10 @ 7:36 pm

Wanny has already replaced his O-coordinator and D-coordinator during his 6 years at Pitt(Cavanaugh to Cignetti and then Rhoads to Bennett)So how many coaches will have to be replaced before it is ok to blame Wanny?
Pitt’s brand of football would be fun and exciting if Wanny had the hogs to run it. If your 11 players are better than the 11 players you line up against then Wanny’s style of football will work. However, you have to recruit good O-Linemen to do that which Wanny has not. Next years class has 1 O-linemene and he’s a 3 star recruit. And most Pitt fans who say Pitt is boring aren’t even complaining about that, they are complaining about him being afraid to try and win games. He coaches not to lose. Sorry that is not enjoyable. Watching a team go out and play not to lose is not fun. It is not a fun brand of football. You win games by playing to win the game.

Comment by druc 12.06.10 @ 7:42 pm

Then that’s what people should say. Complaining about being bored by a run-first offense is like watching baseball and caring about nothing but home runs. Again, I think some of you are really stretching to come up with any possible complaint you can think of.

It should be enough to say that maybe Wannstedt isn’t a very good coach and we can do better. There is no need to smear him as some kind of idiot who is stupider than all of us, or who is content with mediocrity. I personally am inclined to give him another year– one year of 7-5, following 9-4 and 10-3, is not a trend. A second consecutive year of disappointment would be. However, if/when I reach the conclusion that it is time for Wannstedt to go, it will be in sadness, not the anger and bile I read in these comments. He is an honorable man, is trying the best he can, and cares at least as much as any of us. It may become in the best interest of the program to fire him, but if/when that happens then shame on us if we gloat about it.

Comment by Navy Panther 12.06.10 @ 8:03 pm

All you Wanny detractors can go to hell, at the end of the season you’re hearing me yell out loud and clear, We’re number 3!, we’re number 3! considering it’s the big east,…. I gotta pea!, I gotta pea! Can’t wait. Looking forward to next year and already picking out the wall in my house that I want to beat my head against for four solid months!!! Love that Wanny!

Comment by Dr. Tom 12.06.10 @ 8:06 pm

I’m a life-long Pitt fan, Panther Club member and football season ticket holder who cares passionately about Pitt athletics. I’m embarrassed, frustrated and just plain sick and tired of watching a once-proud and nationally respected program devolve into irrelevance. Enough is enough. Wanny must go!

Comment by scott 12.06.10 @ 8:17 pm

I disagree navypanther. Nothing to do with scoring. Last nights Steeler game was fantastic, full of energy, excitement, only 13-10. I have said that on here before, but, I am only relaying what neighbors, co-workers, neices and nephews have said, something about Pitt is “no fun to watch”. I believe it has to do with a lack of cohesiveness, intangibles, game plans. It looks like one play has nothing to do with another, like they are lost in a fog. Never sure what they are trying to do. It’s not just lack of scoring, it’s the way they go about it. Also, the fact that they blew almost all of the games on national t.v., never seem to be playing for anything. I find it to be true, but, really, I’m just relaying what second tier fans are saying, and really, they are the ones we need to get to come to games consistenly.

Comment by DAN 12.06.10 @ 8:26 pm

Navy Panther – You sure you don’t work in the AD at Pitt? You like them accept a over the hill (Never successful in his coaching career) and continue to say next year. Do you think LSU, UF, VT, USC, Oregon or any other program would ACCEPT mediocrity like Pitt. I promise you, if Wanny was hired by any of those programs he would have been fired by year 3. He’s terrible and the biggest fault of his is going into a game flat and his team has zero energy and excitement. If you lived in the South and heard how the Big East and Big Ten are just wastes of football you would get it. Pitt doesn’t care about winning football games. If they did Wanny would be working at Primantis. Only coach I know who isn’t successful but has a job after 20 years.

Comment by Upittbaseball 12.06.10 @ 8:27 pm

Admittedley, losing has a lot to do with it. When you go 0-5 against Utah, Miami, ND, UCONN, and WVU, it makes you look all the worse when using a pro set. Maybe if they won a few of those, some excitement would have been built, and the “no fun to watch” comments wouldn’t be as prevalent. I’m sure Alabama fans enjoy the pro set, when they have 10-11-12 wins every year. Oh well, he’s here to stay, time for hoops!!

Comment by DAN 12.06.10 @ 8:31 pm

I’m sorry, one more thing, doesn’t matter what kind of offense you’re using, if you are in a life and death struggle with the Florida Internationals and New Hampshires of the world, just to get a win, you’re not gonna get positive reviews from the casual fan. I’m sure just about everyone that takes the time to find this site, then post on it, bleeds blue and gold, go to all the games they can, find a bar or party that has a big screen, or enjoys Pitt at home in their comfy chair. We put up with all the garbage and post about it to alleviate our frustrations. The casual fan, who we need, to get some solid attendance doesn’t want to hear about struggles with Ohio, Bowling Green, New Hampshire etc. etc.. They want to hear, whether a running offense or passing, Pitt 55 Fla. Int 7.. You look around at what other BCS conference teams do with cupcakes, yes, yes, I know, there are upsets, and some close games, but, most are dispatched with contempt 40-50-60 something to 10. Bottom line, we have a losing product((I’ve gone over this ad nauseum, 7-5 in the Big East is absolutely horrible)) ((almost everyone goes to a bowl nowadays)), so, we have a losing product, with a terrible style, it’s just a loser all around!!

Comment by DAN 12.06.10 @ 8:44 pm

Wanny must go for no other reason except that he’s getting paid for us to suck this bad!

Not to say that his heart was/is not in the right place with the school’s best interest in mind, but enough is enough. The talent that we’ve faced over these 10-3/9-4/7-5 years has been downright pathetic! The Big Sprawl (kudos Chas) is made up by a dart board and is the biggest patch-job to date. Pitt should be flying high by now and the talk of the town as every analysts favorite flavor of the day program (sound familiar bball fans?). UCONN and USF didn’t even have D-I programs prior to the BE! And now they own us! How can you possible spin that into a positive? Enough of the b.s. from the stache, he’s had more than enough chances to put together some risky gameplans to spark a little life into the players and fans, yet he stuck with his guns and lost WAY too many games that should have been easily one with adjustment (someday McCoy will tell us how he really felt about Stull throwing into 50mph winds and losing 3-0 to OR-St.).

My heart goes out to any senior on this year’s team that dug down deep on Saturday to give it their all and try and salvage something out of this season. I commend them for winning in spite of awful coaching, but I find it very hard to consider this year worthy of co-Big East Champs.

Go ahead and see if this s@#$ flies with USC, Oh St., Florida, Miami (drr they just FIRED their coach), Texas, EVEN STANFORD!!!

Expectations are meant to be set and risen to, not the other way around.

In my state of anger, I gave misinformation about USF and UCONN. Although, the pathetic nature is still the same.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 12.06.10 @ 8:51 pm

Upittbaseball– No, I don’t work for the AD. (It would be a pretty cool job, though!)

Comment by Navy Panther 12.06.10 @ 8:59 pm

Omar – the guy makes lots of money to coach D1 football. He has made a ton of money in the NFL and was good enough to get 2 head coaching jobs in the NFL, something a very small percentage of people in his profession can say. He was also the defensive coordinator for a super bowl champion, again, something not many coaches can say. That is what I meant when I said he has been successful and is not a disgrace.

I am right, I know.

I didn’t say Wanny deserves no criticism, I just think the “FIRE HIM! HE IS A DISGRACE! HE’S THE WORST COACH! HIRE MIKE LEACH” segment of Pitt fans sounds ridiculous.

I also think they will improve next year and hopefully win some more games.

Comment by mike 12.06.10 @ 9:16 pm

‘Fool me once, fool me twice’ comes to mind when it comes to Wanny.

No matter how you spin Wanny’s past as a head coach, he has NOT been successful…period. I admit was one of those people waving the Wanny flag despite Chicago and Miami and thinking this was a whole new ballgame for him, but it’s time to admit it and move on.

Great guy. Nice guy. Great Pitt guy. Okay recruiter. Good ‘rally around me guy’.

But bad head coach and game day coordinator.

People that make apologies for horrible products just don’t get it… we aren’t a bad brand of football because we run a pro style offense or a 4/3 defense…we are a bad brand of football because…

1) We lose important games, ALL the time
2) We usually lose non important games
3) We win meaningless games, with inferior talent, weakly
4) We make mistakes that show no development
5) We do not have a strategic plan before, during, or finishing games leaving poor perceptions of preparation
6) We don’t instill confidence and pride in the fanbase by constantly underachieving for the perceived talent level
7) In a game of perception (like polls for CFB), we perform horribly because we are incapable of dominating other teams that are inferior (also see beating better teams to help perception)
8) And to top it off, the only reminder of our past era of success (our logo, colors, and marketing identity) was ripped from the team..further diminishing our brand recognition nationally.

WHAT PART OF THIS DO YOU PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND? PITT FOOTBALL IS A HORRIBLE, SICKENING, MIND NUMBING EXPERIENCE THAT CANNOT BE ENJOYED BECAUSE OF THE AFOREMENTIONED POINTS.

Until we win big games, dominate less talented teams, show player development and improvements throughout the year, have a game plan, and achieve to the level we are capable of with the recruits we have… we will be having the same conversation this time ever year.

We don’t need to score seventy points, hire Mike Leach or run some horse shit spread offense to build a great brand of football. It’s not a style contest, it is an execution contest…

Win important games! Win crap games convincingly. Show development. HAve a plan. Execute. Live up to our capabiltites.

Pitt 2010 did NONE OF THESE.

Comment by Pauly P 12.06.10 @ 9:56 pm

Pauly P your post entered at 9:56Pm is the best one that I have seen in weeks. 2011 with Wanny promises to be more of the same because there is nothing in his past history pro/college to show that he can win a championship.

Comment by isnore 12.06.10 @ 10:37 pm

To all the Wanny Defenders. I hope you have Season tickets. I doubt you do but I hope you do.

That way next year you can all high five each other During the Buffalo & Maine conquests.

It shouldn’t be hard to find each other at Heinz field as there will be only 10 to 15 thousand people actually in attendance. That is after we get hammered by Utah, Iowa, & Notre Dame.

I watch from my living room next year.

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 12.07.10 @ 1:19 am

Yes, Pauly P, that was spot on!

Pauly P- great post!

mike- you and i disagree on the definition of success. i think wannstedt is a fraud who swindled all of his previous employers out of money. he is stealing.
