One word. WHEW!!! Rev. George from Columbus

Comment by Rev. George Mehaffey 11.19.10 @ 10:07 pm

The tournament was sponsered by 2K sports.

As someone who owns the game and has read reviews of it as well, NBA2k11 is awesome, and has gotten awesome reviews.

I can’t fault 2k for hyping the hell out of it.

And like the good Reverend said… WHEW!!!!!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 11.19.10 @ 10:09 pm

Solid game. Taylor looks stoned always. He pisses me off with half ass effort at times. I guess it’s the shit show that is DW Pitt football tom. Ugg. Good to see Chancellor behind the bench.

Comment by Justin 11.19.10 @ 10:10 pm

Have to learn how to play better with a lead. This team has a lot to like, but they made some questionable decisions with the ball–and OMG, the foul shooting?? They sure know how to keep the game interesting.Won’t win too many games where we shoot that poorly from the foul line, and get outrebounded. But we have played quality competition and won every time, so what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.

Comment by Pitt60 11.19.10 @ 10:30 pm

Good all around game for early season. I think we could be better without Brown making so many mistakes to his few solid moments.

Comment by firewalt 11.19.10 @ 10:51 pm

Everyone seemed a little off in their decision making tonight, but they still managed to win against a team with some good talent. Thank goodness for Gibbs. He was clutch.

Agree with Pitt60. They need to keep up the intensity when they have a chance to put a team away instead of getting careless and allowing the opponent to hang around. Don’t know if my heart can take a full season of games like these past two.

Good to win a tourney at the Garden once again. Hope it carries over to the BE tourney later in the season.

Still trying to gauge-did Texas play like a #22 ranked team today, and more important-over the last couple of days-did Pitt play like a #4-5? A better team than Texas might’ve easily tied, or perhaps even won with a last-second three.

Comment by Lou 11.19.10 @ 10:59 pm

Good two game set in NYC – I think we are going to struggle at times to score (or at least get easy shots) but without an offensive post presence, it is what it is. Let’s just hope Gibbs doesn’t have any really ice cold games. I was really hoping Taylor would develop more but it doesn’t look like there has been a huge jump in his game.

Curious why they don’t look to the post a bit more and at least try to get McGhee, Zanna, or Taylor some looks inside. Getting ALL of your points from the perimeter or off drives to the baskets makes things a lot tougher.

Still like Zanna more than Robinson but I bet Nas gets more of the minutes going forward. I’m not sure why – good glue guy but ideally I think he plays 10-15 minutes a game.

My guess is that most games will be like the last two and the URI game – Pitt will control the game, be in the lead for most of it, but never blow a team away. I think that’s how they’re built this year. It makes it stressful for a fan, but hey, they’re 5-0. Pretty good start.

Comment by Mac 11.19.10 @ 11:12 pm

pitt is good and will get better as the games go bye the teams thay beat werent cup cakes but you are right abought brown

Comment by FRANKCAN 11.19.10 @ 11:56 pm

Need to finish at the rim, the front court needs to be able to create some offense of their own and we have to develop a killer instinct. We’ve already surrendered too many double-digit leads five games in.
That said, I’ll take 5-0 with wins over Rhode Island as well as Maryland and Texas on a neutral court. We’re deep and talented and there’s plenty of room for improvement. Dixon’s biggest challenge may be managing minutes and finding the right mix. There’s too much talent to sit idle at the end of the bench.
Love that we’re playing a tougher non-con schedule than usual. So much more helpful than beating up on lesser opponents. We have some warts and I’d rather know about them sooner rather than later.
Should be some good games coming up against Robert Morris, Penn and Duquesne.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.20.10 @ 12:04 am

when we need points this is the line up i would like to see zanna at center jj moore at sf nasir at pf gibbs at g and wanamaker what do you think that would be fast powerful best 5

Comment by FRANKCAN 11.20.10 @ 12:15 am

Because there are times when we are going to struggle to score, I would love to see them try a couple of things. First, at times a little more pressure defense. Not even through the press (although that wouldnt hurt either), but just more in the half court. More pressure on the ball could create some more turnovers at times. I do think are half court defense has been really good and wouldnt change it much. We control the ball and stop penetration pretty good, but a change of pace once in awhile could help jumpstart some offensive tempo. The second thing I would like to see them do (and Ive been screaming for this for years) is to run after made baskets. Get the ball in quick after we get scored on and GO! With the athleticism we have and the experienced guards, I see no harm in pushing the ball up the court quickly to try to get an easy basket or at worse and open look. If nothing is there , then we set up the offense… no harm done. We work so hard to often just inbound the ball and bring it up the court, this could also alleviate some pressure. Again, its just something to use once in awhile. To do all game would be completely against our style, but a change of pace could benefit us once in awhile.

Comment by Z-Boy 11.20.10 @ 8:00 am

much too early in the seasom to fret but wasn’t particularly pleased how our big men all got into foul trouble especially since it was a freshman that drew many of those fouls … and that we were outrebounded

Still looks like Taylor has trouble playing with his back to the basket on O, and he still brings the ball too low to the floor thereby getiing the ball stripped too ften.

Finally, this is the 3rd game I watched on TV this year, and the 3rd time that I heard at halftime that Pitt missed too many layups and easy baskets

Comment by wbb 11.20.10 @ 8:01 am

Good win

In ken pomeroys rankings, which I believe are far more accurate than the polls, Texas is ranked 8th, Maryland 27th. We beat two good teams this weekend, despite mediocre offensive performances by Pitt.

Comment by dan 11.20.10 @ 8:58 am

Absolutely “other” Dan. Lots to work on, sure, but, went to NYC and beat Maryland and Texas, I’ll take it!!!!

Comment by Dan 11.20.10 @ 9:10 am

Mac– they can’t look inside for offensive touches because more often than not it’s a wasted possession when they do (turnover, badly missed shot, etc). It is a good idea in theory, but until one of the bigs develops into an offensive threat beyond offensive rebounding, they have to go with their strength (perimeter, penetrating, etc).

Comment by Jason 11.20.10 @ 9:17 am

Starting to be convinced that the three guard lineup is Pitt’s most effective team. Pitt went on a couple nice runs last night with Woodall at the point and Gibbs looking to come off screens for jumpers.

The other big advantage to three guards, Brown is sitting next to Knight on the bench. It seems like every time the other team goes on a run to get back in the game it is because Brown gets picked and his man hits a three. Brown is not a reliable offensive player either. He misses too many wide open shots. There was a stretch in the second half where he missed two open threes and his man hit two open threes, a 12 point swing at a time when Pitt could have put the game away. Wanamaker is at least slightly more reliable on both ends of the floor.

I would like to see the three guards play with Zanna and McGhee. Jamie had them in there with Robinson and Taylor.

Pitt desperately needs to get SOME offense out of their bigs. Right now they’re getting next to nothing. It would help them tremendously to have some low post scoring. It would open things up for guards and it would let Pitt be more consistent on offense.

Zanna has the most potential to give them some scoring from the 4 spot. But he isn’t a post up offensive player. So I am afraid that low post scoring in the half court set is NOT going to be in the cards for pitt this season.

But, hey a win is a win. I’ll take a bunch of these hard fought close wins.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 11.20.10 @ 9:49 am

Hard to gauge the talent year to year, and this early in the season. But we beat two of the best coaches in the country, back to back. No coincidence Barnes has 500 wins – or will soon. And Gary Williams may get more of out of less than anyone.

Tonight, the defensive effort was outstanding. We made Texas play our game. I liked Brown’s intensity, so I can live with a few questionable decisions. Taylor’s nickname should be “one dunk”, because that seems to be what he is good for. One spectacular stuff a game. But saw clear improvement over Thursday with everyone else. Md was a letdown, but really encouraged by this one.

Do we have to play a football game today?

Comment by PO'd Panther 11.20.10 @ 9:54 am

I like Nas coming off the bench…he has a calming effect on the lesser tenured “2nd string” guys of Patterson, Richardson, Woodall and Taylor.

He does not have tons of talent, but his basketball IQ is off the charts.

I’ll put a stake in the ground today…we shoot over 70% from the line and this team wins the Big East and makes Elite 8. They don’t and it could be an early exit in March. We have the players and the coach, but as evidenced this week, tournaments are won on the FREE THROW line.

Comment by Pauly P 11.20.10 @ 10:10 am

Pitt played very sloppy and beat two VERY good teams (esp. Texas). Does everyone remember what we looked like at this point last year? Horrendous. Dixon teams always improve tremendously and this one will as well. When they start clicking on O look out because this is going to be a really good freaking year. So many bodies to throw at people.

Comment by Henry Hynoceros 11.20.10 @ 10:52 am

I went to both games & both nights, the big guys did not finish their lay ups, especially McGee. We got outrebounded last night, which never happens. I assume Dixon will get in Dante & McGee’s ear about rebounds, but also about finishing their lay ups and not squandering second chance opportunities.

In watching this game on delay, Dickie V is a really annoying color guy, more so than usual.

Comment by Rieur1114 11.20.10 @ 11:48 am

Wins are wins obviously, and these were two good teams (as was URI). and while its early, Pitt doesn’t quite look like a final four team yet. Essentially, it just looks like the decision making isn’t where it needs to be, but natural this early. Pauly, free throws help, but I think the difference between final four and 2nd round exit will be turnovers and this team makes me nervous in this regard.
Anyway, we’re well on our way to the tournament, and until then, in my eyes, its all just practice.

Comment by PantherP 11.20.10 @ 11:53 am

I was watching the Penguins game and checking in during the commercials. Texas managed to stay close but the Panthers pulled it our. I’m happy with the 5-0 start and two wins in a row against ranked teams in MSG is a good start. There’s lots to work on but this team looks like it has a bright future.
