Open Thread: Flames-Panthers

The game is on ESPN3.com (assuming your internet provider offers it) starting at 7:00.

If you get Comcast and live in the region, you can watch the game on tape delay on Panther TV (Channel 188 or 210) at 9:30.

It’s okay to root for Paul Carter to have a good game for UIC (but not too good).

The pace should be different than the URI game.

Still, there are some things worth watching.

One of the things to watch is the pace of the game. Last season Bo Ryan’s Wisconsin teams played at a ridiculously slow pace, with an adjusted tempo of 60.2 possessions per game. [UIC Coach Howard] Moore isn’t Ryan, he’s his own man, but the Flames are definitely going to slow things down. On the other hand, Pittsburgh ran with Rhode Island in its last game, which was 75 possessions.

So, we can see if Pitt speeds them up or is content to play slower.

If I remember correctly, today is the first day of the fall basketball signing period. Any word on whether Pitt’s 2011 recruits have sent in their official letters? Just curious…

Comment by Pantherman13 11.10.10 @ 4:30 pm

The Johnsons have sent in their letters. Bond will send his on Saturday.

I don’t think Pitt will look to speed UIC up tonight if they choose to make it a half court game. I think Jamie is going to let his opponents dicate tempo for a good number of these non-con games in an effort to get his team used to any speed their opponent tries to throw at them come Big East play.

Granted part of the reason Pitt played a 75 possession game was that URI over-committed to the press and was soft on the back end but if Jamie really wanted to slow that game down he could have, he chose not to.

Comment by Pabs 11.10.10 @ 4:38 pm

Thanks for the update Pabs. Any word on Gilbert?

I’m sure Pitt will still try to selectively push the ball, but I am curious to see how the half court offense looks. I’m also curious as to how Taylor will rebound (pun intended) from the last game. I thought he came out with nice energy on Monday, had a nice offensive rebound and put back, but he lost his concentration after the tough moving pick call, then immediately picked up a dumb third foul.

Hopefully I can make it up to the Pete (still 50-50 at this hour).

Will local radio coverage again be blocked online? I’m trying to find a Chicago station that’ll have it on with no luck.

Gil Brown time.

Pitt’s up 28-12 with 7:54 left in 1st half.

Comment by Chris 11.10.10 @ 7:32 pm

Ashton Gibbs on fire! Three 3’s.

Comment by Chris 11.10.10 @ 7:36 pm

I think it’s time to move Taylor to the four. His post offense and defense have not improved. Not one bit. Let Richardson and Gary split time at the five. Taylor and Zanna at the four.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.10.10 @ 7:39 pm

Thank you zakman

K.C. Robbins has all the moves. Baby Shaq! Lol.

Pitt big men need to step it up. Currently getting dominated by this guy:

Talib struggling. We need Nas back.

Comment by alcofan 11.10.10 @ 7:46 pm

@Orl. Not sure I would go with “dominated. Half of what he’s thrown up has been garbage that rattled in.

Comment by Chris 11.10.10 @ 7:51 pm

I *would* say dominated. He has 12 points at the half. The combination of Gary, Talib, JJ and Dante have a total of five points. The sky isn’t falling, but we need *way* more production from our front court. We also need to do a better job on defense against a second-team center who’s average 4 PPG over his career at UIC.
I don’t think the outcome is in doubt, but that was a poor half of basketball from our bigs.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.10.10 @ 7:57 pm

Over the air, seems like defense is much better today.

Comment by steve 11.10.10 @ 8:16 pm

I believe we have reason to be excited about Patterson. Jaron Brown with a jumper.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.10.10 @ 8:39 pm

Zanna’s an athletic freak. He’s gonna be very very interesting to watch over the next four years.

Comment by merlin 11.10.10 @ 8:40 pm

Crowd at the Pete is a little bit of a let-down.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.10.10 @ 8:42 pm

Dixon empties bench with two minutes left.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.10.10 @ 8:44 pm

Solid second half. UIC is a bad team, but a win is a win.
This is a very deep Pitt squad. We had a McDonald’s All-American out there for garbage time (Taylor). Although I will note that he was playing the four at the end, and had a wicked follow dunk on his own miss 😉

Comment by Dave in Orlando 11.10.10 @ 8:52 pm

Once again, our guards owned the game. This time around more people contributed so it was a good showing. For some reason my ESPN3 feed died on me before halftime. This is going to be a good season for us.

Maryland, our next opponent is trailing College of Charleston currently. I am doing a little scouting for our next game.

Comment by Panthoor 11.10.10 @ 8:55 pm

“This is a great team we played tonight.”

UIC Coach postgame.

Comment by steve 11.10.10 @ 8:55 pm

Panthoor, follow closely and let us know. I’ll be there next Thursday.

Comment by steve 11.10.10 @ 8:57 pm

16.9 seconds left. CoC 74 Maryland 73. Maryland ball. Looks like a nice finish.

Comment by Panthoor 11.10.10 @ 9:00 pm

Maryland won by 1. Hit a bucket with 4 seconds left.

I think we should beat this Maryland team. No Vasquez. It might be close at first but eventually a 10 point win is possible.

Comment by Panthoor 11.10.10 @ 9:02 pm

We need victories next week at the Garden. Make it our home, not the Dukie’s.

Comment by steve 11.10.10 @ 9:33 pm

We did what we were supposed to do against Chi-Ill, nuff said.

Looking ahead and not trying to disrespect North Florida but we should blow Maryland out the Garden. Not only based on the results of their game tonight but no one in that backcourt can run defend Gibbs or Wanamaker. Texas should be fun though

Comment by tacocat 11.10.10 @ 11:44 pm

Payback time for last year’s Texas debacle.

Comment by steve 11.11.10 @ 8:35 am

JJ Moore played last night. He can only redshirt going forward if he has a documented injury.

Comment by Omar 11.11.10 @ 8:47 am

Ya, Moore played and played well in the second half. It seems as though Coach Dixon is going to continue to work him in more and more as he gains an understanding of an offense.

I read something that they call him Brown’s twin…they literally have the same body. Moore appears to be a much better shooter and seems slightly more athletic. I’m looking forward to seeing him get more involved as the season goes on.

Comment by TJ 11.11.10 @ 9:27 am

Moore looked OK, but definitely did not impress like he apparantly did this summer.
btw, Brown is not a bad shooter. Not sure why people think that — maybe his awkward looking form — but last year he shot better FG% and 3P% than Gibbs! He may have had low scoring games last year but they weren’t necessarily inefficient.
Also, Dante Taylor starting to emerge. Look out.

Comment by PantherP 11.11.10 @ 9:50 am

Pretty much the same assessment as the RI game. It’s just that the talent differential was much greater.
– Love the guard play. That wins tourney games.
– Really like what Zanna brings and I think he’ll get better and better.
– Gil looks to be getting into game shape. He just needs to stay there mentally.
– Love the way McGhee is running the floor.
– I like Patterson. Great court awareness. He’ll be a key contributor down the line.
– I like the way Moore looks. He has that big-time-player attitude about him. He just needs to learn Jamie’s offensive and defensive systems.
– Highlight of the night – Taylor. His dunk off the missed FT may have been goaltending, but he is really quick off the floor. The dunk off of his own miss was amazing. He’s coming, so as PantherP said, “Look out.”

Comment by TampaT 11.11.10 @ 11:04 am

One thing about MOore I loved though – on defense he has the hand-check thing where he sort of flicks is hand in the face of the offensive player. It looks like it’ll annoy the heck out of people, and it takes some swagger to pull it off. i dunno, i liked it.
