Liveblog: ‘Ville-Pitt

Homecoming edition.

Luke has the reins once more. I’m getting this set up now, because I’ve struggled to do it right before leaving.

Moderated chat. Behave yourselves.

I can’t bring myself to gloat over the WVU loss to UConn. Especially with the way Pitt has been this season. Nothing makes sense in the Big East except that it really looks like the conference is as bad as anything the ACC has trotted out the last few years in terms of putrid parity. The wheel of destiny spins in the Big East this year.

As usual if you want to break it out from the site, Click Here.

Wow. I hope Bill Stewart locked his doors tonight. {Hide ya kids…hide ya wife – Antoine Dodson voice}

Driving up soon – let’s hope we can make it three in a row. If we can keep Powell under 100 I think we’ll be OK.

Comment by Reed 10.30.10 @ 4:41 am

…NAAAH! I’m @#%*@#! gloating, Chas! Maybe you’re a more mature man than I. Shades of Earnest Byner, b!itches…

Heh. They want to fire Stewart…

say hello to the Terry Bowden era in Morganhole. :)))))

Huge game today. Louisville is much more competitive than the last few years. We need to maintain the advantage in the Big East. This game should not be a laugher, should be close all the way. I hope the crowd shows up for homecoming. Let’s go Pitt!

Comment by gc 10.30.10 @ 9:13 am

ECH maybe Mike leach and Jim levitt will get to be coaches at Morganhole so they can beat some people down…

Comment by POLE 10.30.10 @ 10:39 am

I am not in control of my own mind. Whether I post critically tomorrow or Monday is entirely up to DW and the boys. Please, I don’t want to post anything critical, sorry, it’s out of my hands……….Let’s Go Pitt!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Dan 10.30.10 @ 11:06 am

Too bad on that 3rd and 7 from the 12, Sunseri could have run for the 1rst down, the whole left side of the field was pretty much wide open. Then Hutchins shanks one. He seems to be good for at least 1 missed FG per game.

Comment by carolinapanther 10.30.10 @ 1:29 pm

Bill Stewart may not be the greatest coach in the world, but the job the Randy Edsell does continues to amaze. Talk about getting the most out of what he has. Just the opposite of . . .

Never mind. Positive vibes only today. Until at least 3:30.

Comment by PO'd Panther 10.30.10 @ 1:37 pm

Would be great to have a mobile qb in college. Sunseri could of easily ran that in from 12 yards if he could get moving. Not criticizing, just sayin in college ball you’d like to have a weapon like that. Also, Cam Saddler has got to go on punt returns. DW insists he is getting better each week, but does he realize the season is almost over. He is so indecisive back there. Ok, now go return one Cam.

Comment by Z-Boy 10.30.10 @ 1:47 pm

Funny, all the media reports this week out of UCONN were about how the program couldn’t reach the next level under Edsell. He had grown stagnantand couldn’t win anymore. Not saying I agree or disagree… But the grass is always greener…

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 10.30.10 @ 2:40 pm

Saddler had been better the last 2 weeks but has not been good today at all. His best play was making that fair catch.

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 10.30.10 @ 2:43 pm

If the scores hold, Pitt will be the only undefeated team in the Big East, and the only teams with one loss will be teams that Pitt has beaten. Meaning Pitt can lose one more game and still be guaranteed a BCS bowl.

Comment by Brady 10.30.10 @ 2:46 pm

Down goes Froman, down goes Froman….you get the idea !

Comment by carolinapanther 10.30.10 @ 2:51 pm

Correct, BG Panther, Uconn has been very disappointing until WVU imploded last night.
After all Uconn just got shutout by these same Cardinals last week 26-0. Edsall is nothing great, despite all the hype.

Comment by carolinapanther 10.30.10 @ 2:54 pm

Game, set, match. Dave Decicco with the pick.

Comment by carolinapanther 10.30.10 @ 2:55 pm

Er I mean, Dom. Dave was he father who played on the ’76 NC team. Another legacy player.

Nice win for the Alma Mater. Not sure if we are better or we have finally gotten into a very weak BIG EAST schedule. Either way +17 Million payout to the league with Big Pay day for PITT if we win BE and get the BCS bowl bid.

Game ball to D-fense again Sheard is a beast. Decicco is much better at LB. Sunseri still missing down field passes (TD pass missed at end of 1st half. Through behind receiver).

Team is getting better but would brag too much with a Syracuse win against U.C. today and a UConn win against WVU last night. The B.E. is spinning out of control. Lord help us if Syracuse or UConn end up representing the B.E. in the BCS. They wil revoke our BCS automatic bid immediately!

Comment by PITT fan in Atlanta 10.30.10 @ 3:06 pm

did Hyno get hurt? who is Chris Mike?

Comment by wbb 10.30.10 @ 3:12 pm

Solid defense…sloppy offense…and a mystery player…who is Chris Mike?

Comment by isnore 10.30.10 @ 3:23 pm

Chris Mike is a walk-on fullback from West Haven, Conn. Not to be confused with New Haven.

They switched him from LB to FB this year. He was impressive, didn’t seem to be overwhelmed at all considering he never played before.

Nice win for Pitt to go 3-0 in the Big East, we control our own destiny…..again. Cross fingers
and toes if necessary.

Hail to Pitt.

Comment by carolinapanther 10.30.10 @ 3:32 pm

@wbb…..Hank the Tank had a mild concussion after having to recover Sunseri’s fumble, more than likely someone helmeted him in the scrum.

Comment by carolinapanther 10.30.10 @ 3:36 pm

Pitt needs to win 3 out of 4 to lock up BE title.

Comment by markp 10.30.10 @ 5:27 pm

Good win. The defense step up with offense having struggles in the read zone again.

Comment by BnG 10.30.10 @ 6:08 pm

Well When I said we could win the big east 3 weeks ago everyone told me i was crazy?

Comment by POLE 10.30.10 @ 6:31 pm

decent win today/ geez, if pitt doesn’t win the BE this year…what a horrible conference and it’s all setting up perfectly for pitt. all we have to do is beat uconn, usf and either wvu or cinci and we go to a bcs bowl. unbelievable. too bad the ooc results weren’t better. those losses to miami and nd look terrible now.

Comment by scott 10.30.10 @ 6:32 pm

POLE, you still are crazy….not necessarily though about Pitt winning out..

Comment by Marco stuck in Wilkinsburg 10.30.10 @ 7:13 pm

Good and necessary win. Sunseri looked pretty good at times. Another outstanding performance by Sheard. Good thing Froman was awful, he missed a lot of wide open guys. An above average q-b would have made the game a lot closer. Other than that Pitt was pretty dominant. Some may disagree but I think Wanny showed class by taking the air out of the ball and not running the score up at the end.
Keep winning them one at a time.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by gc 10.30.10 @ 7:59 pm

I agree about Wanny showing class but I have to admit I was hoping for a couple play action passes somewhere in the 4th quarter. 27-3 sounds a lot better for voters. But there was no need to run it up inside 2 minutes…

UCONN will be a tough game…

Comment by Bowling Green Panther 10.30.10 @ 9:06 pm

Nice win from the boys today! One step closer to respectability and possibly that elusive BE Championship and the BCS bid. Tino seemed to take a couple steps back today…he seemed to revert back to early Tino decision making. Nonetheless, he got the job done. Hopefully a little layover until UCONN will be helpful. Sheard is a beast and must be considered to be the MVP of the team to date. From Day 1, he came to play and should be recognized for it! Great job!

@ZBoy

I’m with you on Saddler. I am very skeptical of his abilities. You could argue that the position of PR & KR is absolutely critical for Wanny’s style of play (ball control/field position), yet he seems to be content with a major weak link at the position with Saddler. Not to pile on him, but he had monumental hiccups in Utah and UM that really hurt us)…
and other games, he seems VERY tentative and squirelly out there…

I keep waiting to see what he brings to the table, and Wanny’s vision for him in that position? Does Wanny realize the season is over half over? Does he actually want him to make plays at that position or does he simply want someone to CATCH it? Right now, I see more of a “JUST CATCH IT” attitude from the coaches to Saddler. If that is the case, we are missing out IMHO.

Comment by Pauly P 10.30.10 @ 9:29 pm

If season ended today (saw it on the Oregon vs USC game) we would be Fiesta bowl bound against Oklahoma.

I don’t think we’d matchup well with Oklahoma. Cincy gave them a game, but I just dont see us getting it done against them. I’d rather take my chances with Nebraska, but thats me.

Comment by BnG 10.31.10 @ 12:55 am

BnG now you are crazy, Nebraska is a way better team than Oklahoma.

I didn’t see yesterday’s game but was at the Rutger’s game … Saddler as the worst perspective of how to field a punt thany anyone retruned I have ever seen .. and he even messed up a kickoff putting Pitt in a big hole.

I know he no longer is able to play but I will take Aaron Smith’s 4 yard average punt return with no fumbles results from last year anyday over what Saddler has done this year

Comment by wbb 10.31.10 @ 8:14 am

WBB, You are right on. I have a really hard time believing we don’t have someone who can actually field the kicks. Saddler repeatedly puts the offense in worse position because he refuses to field many punts that he should get to.

Comment by TJ 10.31.10 @ 11:52 am

Oh the irony. What a difference three conference games makes. Three weeks ago we were pining for the Walt Harris days to this week debating which Big 12 champ we’d rather face in the Fiesta Bowl.

Comment by Chris 10.31.10 @ 1:04 pm

Go back a few posts Chris i never pined for harris and i said we could win the big east.

Comment by POLE 10.31.10 @ 2:56 pm

Guess what, I’m not going to get excited about this win. A win is a win though. The defense stepped up big yesterday, though I gotta say it helped a lot when Bilal Powell got hurt early in the 3rd. That guy was just starting to get going, he’s a good one.
Without him our D pretty much forgo the run and chased Abe Froman around pretty good and got him gun shy to the point, he was throwing off his back foot and starting to see Jabal out the corner of his eye on EVERY play. We got shafted by the refs on the long pass to Baldwin on the sidelines, he was clearly in bounds(watched the tape of game this AM). We moved the ball in the 1rst half, except in the Red Zone, settled for FG’s, the 3rd time down there, Sunseri could have run for the 1rst down on 3rd and 7 from the 12, then the shanked FG. L’ville’s defense was better than expected, they were very quick to the ball and had some good DB’s who batted several passes away on excellent plays. Once we got up 20-3, Wanny took the air out of the ball, since he saw Froman had lost it and Powell was on the sidelines. Would have preferred some more points in the 4rth, to be honest. Anyway… on to Storrs. And of course they’re coming off of a high now beating the Hoopies. We seem to be catching these BE teams all riding highs. Cuse after starting 4-1 and beating USF on the road, Rutgers 4rth quarter antics over Army, L’Ville shutting out Uconn, and now Uconn getting their 1rst win EVER over Hoopies. Keep on keeping on Panthers ! Let’s go Pitt !

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.31.10 @ 3:13 pm

This team isn’t very good and the BE is worse

Comment by scoocher 10.31.10 @ 8:38 pm

Virgil was that Abe Froman, Sausage King of Chicago? or Adam?

Comment by POLE 11.01.10 @ 12:00 am

@Pole. That comment wasn’t directed at you specifically. The group (me included) in general.

And just in from the Short Term Memory Department, how is it that Syracuse is getting all this airtime and coverage and is “ranked” ahead of the team that beat them by almost 5 touchdowns three weeks ago?

Comment by Chris 11.01.10 @ 12:35 am

I hear ya and i agree i was just looking at the polls what a joke. Well all we have to do is win out and it wont matter? right?

Comment by POLE 11.01.10 @ 1:13 am

Chris and POLE: It’s PERCEPTION. Pitt lost on three nationally televised games, looking particularly bad in one. The ‘Cuse beatdown was on regional TV, so very few voters even saw it. ‘Cuse beat a ranked team (#20 WVU) and the two-time conference champ (Cinci) on their home fields. That’s what the voters look at regardless of who beat who. Look, Pitt got more votes than Miami and they spanked us pretty good.

That’s what Pitt will deal with for the rest of the year, or as long as the Orange keep winning too, so the only way to turn it is to win all 7 BE games convincingly. Three down with four to go.

That’s why the talk earlier in this thread of having a cushion and the tie-breaker for the BE championship and BCS bid bothers me. No one – particularly the coaches and players – should be thinking that way. Pitt has the meat (according to preseason expectations) of their BE schedule in front of them, so a letdown in any of the next four games will result in a loss or losses. They can’t afford that if they hope to end the season with any national respect at all.
