LiveBlog: Rutgers-Pitt

Noon start. That means leaving before 6:30. Ugh. Supposed to be a surprisingly beautiful day for late October in Pittsburgh. Bringing my daughter with me, assuming I can drag her out and pile her into the car in time. She was excited when I asked her about going. Not so sure about that enthusiasm when I get her up around 6.

Of course that means I definitely stay sober. Always changes the texture of the game.

Luke has offered to run the liveblog from a remote location. Somewhere near Nepal, I believe. He’s been on the run for a while since the incident. He still claims that he was set up to take the blame for that hooker’s death and that it involves a global conspiracy to control the beet sugar market.

I’ll be tweeting throughout the game — which will be on the liveblog. That’s a mostly one-way communication. I’ll try to field some questions at half-time when I can check them.

The liveblog is below and starts around noon.

Let’s go Pitt. Does anyone know the scoop on Shayne Hale? He was a five star and now two freshmen are ahead of him on the depth chart.I guess we are also supposed to see more of Aaron Donald, Caragein and Alexich not getting it done? Strange that ther is a lack of depth on the lines and frosh are getting to play.

We need another laugher today.

Oh well, this is why the Big East is a joke. Teams can’t play, officials can’t officiate.

Sloppy football on both sides. The Big East is in very bad shape this year. Navy is giving Notre Dame a tough time…..it shows just how weak Pitt really is///no excuses//even if we win this game our outlook is very negative no matter what spin Wanny pours out to the media. If we end up losing our year could be over and a visit to The Pinstripe Bowl or Muffler Bowl could be in jeopardy. I can easily see Pitt finishing 6-6 despite all the hoopla about how talented our defense was supposed to be. Don’t count USF out as a much improved team!!

Comment by isnore 10.23.10 @ 1:53 pm

At the new meadowlands watching my navy boys smash notre lame. Navy has zero 4 star recruits. Navy is running it down their throat and getting great pressure on d. The fact that pitt couldn’t beat this team was all the proof i needed. How are the panthers doin??

Nice beatdown by PITT against a BigEast recruiting rival. That’s 2 beatdowns in a row. Perhaps that tough non-con schedule is paying off. Sunseri looks like a completely different QB, throwing for over 300 yards today and connecting several times with Jon Baldwin on deep passes and 2 great catches by him. Rutgers scored after 1 Pitt turnover and the blocked punt. Other than that they didn’t move the ball against a very stout Pitt D. And Dion looked like the Dion of old. This team looks very good now. Hail to Pitt !

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.23.10 @ 4:03 pm

Again not many comments after a big Pitt win and another beatdown. Seems we have nothing but whiners and Wanny haters. The Hillbilly’s lose to a team we crushed 45-14, lmao. Talk about a bad coach, check out Stewart.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.23.10 @ 4:06 pm

Virgil, just finished watching a well coached that outperforms their talent level smash notre dame… its a good thing pitt doesn’t have navy on the schedule this year. When I watch the replay I’ll say my part. But the fact remains, pitt has WAY more talent then navy and look at what each did against nd. Let’s savor the win and enjoy wvu making the road to the bcs that much easier

Hail To Pitt

Go Navy! Beat Army!

Comment by DeVanzo 10.23.10 @ 4:20 pm

GREAT WIN! HAIL TO PITT!!! Nice to see you again Mr. Lewis.

We all went through a rough time with the whole non-conference debacle, but now its time for everyone to enjoy the fact that Pitt is the only non-beaten team in conference play, they have destroyed both conference opponents they played, and they have a chance to get on a roll and make this a special season. Can the ridiculous irrational Sunseri bashers please stop posting their nonsense now? Rutgers’ defense was regarded as one of the best in the league and he went 21 of 27 for 300+ and 3TDs…

HAIL TO PITT!

Comment by Dan35 10.23.10 @ 4:21 pm

Nice effort by the Panthers.
Game ball goes to Phil Bennett for the defensive front line. 7 sacks was impressive and set the tone. They have been consistent all year and Sheard is having a nice season. I have been hard on Decicco all year but I think he has found his spot.
Sunseri is getting comfortable and it is nice to see him linking up with the WR’s on the long ball. Baldwin is playing with more excitement (as Sunseri gets more consistent) and it shows in his performance. The change to the O line after the Miami game is paying dividends. Nice coaching decision.
Lewis had a much better performance this game. He game is directly tied to the O line blocking.

Overall a good win and nice momentum going into an interesting UofL game.

Much credit to the coaching for having the team prepared. Still not feeling good about that ND loss (especially since ND just lost to Navy today). Losing to ranked teams like Utah and Miami is easier to accept but losing to a bad ND team will sting for a while.

Too bad we can’t play the Big East first then the non-conference.

Comment by gc 10.23.10 @ 5:37 pm

I agree Navy is really well coached. However this is more about the type of players Navy has(smart & disciplined) and the type of offense they run. As their success has continued even though Coach Paul Johnson left Navy and became head coach at Georgia Tech and gave the ACC fits with his Triple Option Spread offense. Nobody else on your schedule plays that offensive style and Navy does a lot of chop blocking as well. Army & Air Force also play this style and Air Force gave #1 (bcs) Oklahoma fits before losing 24-27 at Norman. It’s nice to see the service academies have respectable teams, as we all know, this wasn’t always the case. Those triple option spread offenses work very well for them. Pitt playing as it has the last 2 games could beat Navy.

Comment by alcofan 10.23.10 @ 6:23 pm

Virgil,

why do you try and antagonize? Most of the complainers, myself included, are ecstatic about a Pitt win.

I have no problem coming here and admitting when I am wrong.

Season isn’t over, and guess what? If they run the table and win the Big East…I will happily admit I was wrong. As often as you want me too! 🙂

Difference is I bet if Pitt loses to both Cincy and WVU…you will still say Wanny is building something here, lets give him another decade.

As I said when Wanny was hired…I was one of the elated ones. When he recruited like Da Bomb–I was thrilled.

I am starting to get excited about this team again, but everytime I start to get myself into it…a Wanny team has bombed and left me heartbroken.

I am hoping that the scheduling of those tough teams like Utah have helped to make this team competitive not only in BE play but in a BCS game.

But I won’t be blind to the fact that Wanny teams, in the past, have disappointed the most diehard of Pitt fans.

Does that help?

DaveD

Comment by DaveD 10.23.10 @ 6:41 pm

I love the way we have played the past 2 weeks. However, I am still skeptical that we can play like this when facing a spread offense. Only time will tell. Hail to Pitt!

gc – not sure if anyone answered your questions about the d-line, but from what I’ve heard, Hale just has not developed as expected. Effort is apparently not a problem, but things just haven’t clicked for him. As for Donald, his playing time has nothing to do with unhappiness with Caragein or Alexich, but rather, the fact that he has been so impressive in practice. With Romeus coming back either next week or the week after, depth on the d-line still looks pretty good.

Now, as for the o-line (particularly with Nix going down today), who knows…

Comment by Pantherman13 10.23.10 @ 8:48 pm

Sunseri has struggled with throwing to the left. Baldwin was moved to the the right, and voila!

Comment by 66Goat 10.23.10 @ 9:56 pm

Stop complaining about the early non-con losses. A QB going to Utah and bringing his team back to almost winning in OT is nothing to hang your head on.
Miami has better athletes, so don’t give me that crap that Wanny was outcoached.
The only game I think we should have gotten was Notre Dame. We are better than them. I agree that is a combo of poor coaching and lack of confidence.
You are blind if you don’t think Wanny has built a really good program. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate what Walt did to take our program out of the abyss, but Wanny has taken this program to a different level. I am not giving Wanny a free pass either. He HAS to win the Big East, and do it on a fairly consistent basis going forward.

BTW, enough with the Boos already. I know I have disagreed with Wanny’s decisions, but you really? THat much booing? Between the piss poor attendance and the constant booing, I can’t imagine why our players would be pumped to be playing a home game.
btw – Student Section just didn’t show up today. Kudos to the ones that did show up. They were great, but man the attendance is poor! Fair weather fans I guess. Which is their right, but being there in the not so great times, make the great times even that much better….

Comment by bgPitt 10.23.10 @ 11:15 pm

We can debate Wanny’s merits all day long nobody is going to change their mind…but can we all agree now that Tino is the guy to lead this offense? He’s been throwing a great ball.

Comment by Pabs 10.24.10 @ 12:47 am

As Zeise writes in the PG, Sunseri has had his best game of his career the past three weeks. He has started to hit the throws he was missing, hes using his checkdown, his hitting some of the middle of the field routes, and the deep balls are starting to connect. As long as the oline and the D holds up, this team is going to be good.

Comment by BnG 10.24.10 @ 3:44 am

Crazy weekend in the Big East. USF’s anemic offense comes to life, hangs 38 on Cinci at home and hangs on to win. Syracuse bounces back from the Pitt beatdown to break the Hoopies’ 12-game home win streak. And, L’ville shuts down UConn’s run game and shuts them out for an impressive win.

That shows that the Pitt players can’t take any team lightly and we Pitt fans can’t start getting cocky. Like DaveD said, that may only lead to a letdown by the team and heartbreak for us.

Another solid win by the Panthers. They continue to improve as a TEAM. But that’s only 2 down with 5 more to go to reach the goal of a BE championship. Let’s keep that in perspective and hope that some of the bandwagoners turn out for a Homecoming win against the Cardinals.

Hail to PITT!

Comment by TampaT 10.24.10 @ 6:16 am

Hey I’m sorry if I offended the whiners and Wanny haters. Thanks for identifying yourselves. We just didn’t win the last 2 weeks, they were BLOWOUTS. Which is what I thought you wanted. Apparently not ! Sort of proves my point that Wanny can do no right for this crowd. For those of you that said after the beat down of Syracuse last week, that it wasn’t anything, how do you feel now about that notion after Cuse beat the Billys in Hooterville. Hail to Pitt !

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.24.10 @ 6:22 am

I don’t really think some Pitt people know real disappointment. From 1984 to 2000, Pitt was a big disappointment as it was from 1964 to 1973. And a lot of those years a major embarrassment. Maybe they’re too young or weren’t born yet, who knows.
Or like I mentioned just Wanny haters. I’ve been thru thick (1976-1982) with this team and the vast majority of the time since then, the thin. Going 10-3 & 9-4 is not a disappointment and even when you lose you’re not getting blown out. This is like those that complain constantly about Dixon not getting to the Final Four. They must be young since Pitt basketball has never known such extended heights EVER ! Give it a break !

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.24.10 @ 6:34 am

Oh…. one other note. These were the first 2 back to back 40 point games for Pitt in BigEast history.
Including the offensive genius WH years. I know some will love to hear that. LOL

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.24.10 @ 6:55 am

Virgil – I mirror those years with you and agree that anytime PITT wins eight or more games it is an historical reason to celebrate.

However, in very few of those past 30 years have we had as much talent and as high national expectations as we had going into this season.

I don’t think any objective fan can look at how the three ‘big’ OOC games went down and be anywhere near satisfied – especially when two of those teams went on to be pummeled by later opponents. These were the games we were expected to be able to win this season folks, this was what we had been building to over the last two years and truth be told what we scheduled for – and we promptly went out and shot ourselves in the foot three times in a row against quality opposition.

It doesn’t help a fan’s perception of how the first part of the year was handled when two personnel changes are made at the 1/3 mark of the season and the team starts playing better… after all, isn’t this what training camp is specifically for? We also read that both of those combinations were specifically tried during camp so it wasn’t a big shift in philosophy or schematic systems or anything of that sort. It is that sort of bumbling around that is so frustrating to PITT fans regarding our coaching staff… those changes either should have been made during camp or right after the Miami game at least – probably even sooner.

I do think PITT may have turned a corner, and obviously these last two games have been satisfying. But, it is asking an awful lot of a team to be able to win seven straight games…regardless of what we did or didn’t do in our non-con schedule. If things shake out where we can win the title with one loss – and that may happen – I’ll be satisfied with an 8-4 year.

If for some reason we stumble and finish the season out without a BE crown, which as we all know from last season isn’t out of the realm of possibility at all for our Panthers, then I’ll have to say that this season would be a monumental disappointment of historical proportions given the talent and personnel we have on the roster.

Comment by Reed 10.24.10 @ 7:02 am

We have all heard the expression//”Show me the money” Well, show me the wins.
The losses to Utah and Miami were easy to understand, however, the loss to Notre Dame was a typical Wanny coaching mess.
Yes, Tino is improving (as he should), yes, the O line looks as if it is beginning to understand how to play the game and yes, Romeus will be back. No excuses…Pitt should win every game and get an opportunity to get crushed by an SEC team in a BCS Bowl. Based on the first 2-3 weeks of The Big East games it appears that WVU is NOT a bunch of world beaters….UCONN is not ready to win…USF is improving, but probably a year away….Louisville is a no excuse win for Pitt and CINCY of 2010 is a big step below CINCY of 2009. Anything less than a Big East Championship for the Panthers is a coaching disaster. How can I be positive when in every year that Wanny has been head coach we have had at least 1 and often 2 games that we should have won if it had not been for coaching decisions?
Wanny means well, he loves our University and is a strong recruiter….he, however, has not shown that he knows how to navigate a team through a college season. NO MORE EXCUSES IN 2010!!

Comment by isnore 10.24.10 @ 7:18 am

Pantherman, thanks for the update, too bad about Hale, he was a beast in High School.

Virgil, I was in school for Dave Hart and Carl DePasqua, I think we won one game in three years. Some of my friends brought a 15 feet part of the goal post in my apartment when we upset Syracuse. Damn Drunks! I was still there when Billy Knight and Tony Dorsett arrived on campus.

Anyway we have all had our share of ups and downs. I have been in the Wanny camp, but the start this year made me question that support. It is difficult when you start at #15 and don’t live up to the hype.

While things look much better now, trying to look at it objectively, it remains to be seen how well we finish. Anyone that has played sports knows that it is easy to look good against lesser competition, as evidenced by PSU since they moved to the Big Ten. Joe won’t play Pitt or WVU anymore but Temple, a team that has never beat PSU is back on the schedule. But I digress, the true test of quality or greatness is winning against competitive teams and upsetting better teams. This is what we all want. To finish in the top 20, we must win the Big East and win a Bowl game, anything less will be a disappointment considering the pre-season hype and the number of excellant players on the team.

It looked real bad for a while, it looks much better, but objectively, we still don’t know how good we are. Unfortunately, due to the relative weakness of the Big East, we won’t get respect nationally until we beat a ranked team. Let’s hope we earn the opportunity.

For now let’s savor the win and the greatness of Baldwin.

Hail to Pitt!

Want to imagine something scary for Halloween? Romeus may be back for Saturday’s game. That defensive rush might be even a little higher octane than it already is with a fresh Romeus in there. On the sidelines, not even dressed, Greg looked like he was chompin at the bit to get in on the Rutgers beat down this week!

Comment by Dr. Tom 10.24.10 @ 11:24 am

bgPitt, thats the problem, it’s been 6 years, why does Miami have better athletes??? Virgil, yes, we all hate Pitt, you got us. Shame on us for enjoying the wins, and being happy Pitt won, but, still realizing it is Rutgers and Syracuse. “you haters aren’t going to be happy till we beat someone”, “YES, you’re completely right, we had 3 oppurtunities, we lost them all!!! On national t.v.. The excitement is gone for most of us. The only thing that could save the season would be to trample our way through the worst football conference, The Big East, beat West Virginia and go to the BCS” Ok, we won two games, happy to see it, but, I’m not gonna get on here and yell to the sky about Syracuse and Rutgers. Stop complaining about those three games, how do you guys do that, wow, I wish I could have the pills your taking. Quit revising history, the Utah game was horrible, except for the 4th quarter, the score nowhere inidcated the ineptness and lack of preparation by Pitt, Miami, in front of 400 past alumni and prospects, and Notre Dame the debacle, now we beat Syracuse and Rutgers and everything is fantastic?? Hey, I’m happy we won, I was there with my wife and two children, so, you guys give it a break with the “where are the haters” garbage.

Comment by DAN 10.24.10 @ 11:48 am

p.s. Petty, but, I had too. I looked at last weeks posts also, the fella above is correct. Both occasions, Virgil, you are the the first one that comes on here and goads infighting with your antagonisms and make people respond. Why can’t you just enjoy the win and post some things about nice plays, or stats etc. etc. you keep egging people on, they’re gonna bring up Utah, Miami and ND. Check it out, you’re the one buddy………

Comment by DAN 10.24.10 @ 11:51 am

@Dan, you must hate Pitt or you’re just a very negative person. We don’t need constantly reminded that the BigEast is the ‘worst football conference’. In fact why would someone who says they’re a Pitt fan, alum or whatever keep belittling their own conference? Don’t we get that enough from the National Media, Paul Zeise, Ron Cook & Bob Smizik? I don’t get that at all.

Losing to Utah, a Top 10 team, at Utah, in overtime is no frickin disgrace and I nor anyone else don’t have to be on a happy pills to realize that. Throw in the fact it was the debut of an untried, untested QB and a 3/5th’s new O-line and Utah hasn’t lost at home for 3 years.

And you have to be kidding about when Pitt is going to have better athletes than Miami. Why you ask, it’s been 6 years? Are you serious. You know the state of Florida, ever hear of the level of HS football there? 95% of FBS teams will never have Miami’s talent level. And they never have to even recruit farther out than 100-200 miles from Miami.

Here’s something else, people like you love to point out when Wanny makes a supposed coaching error and NEVER POINT OUT WHEN HE MAKES A GOOD COACHING DECISION. Two good ones yesterday were taking the FG’s late in the 3rd quarter when we were up 21-14, putting us up 27-14 and keeping the momentum in Pitt’s favor. As Hall of Fame NFL Coach, Chuck Noll, always said, ‘take the points’. But hey what does he know.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.24.10 @ 12:58 pm

Good Posts Virgil, I’ve been reading this blog for quite some time. It seems like it’s got quite a few complainers and whiners, not all mind you but several. And anyone that takes a different tact gets attacked. Which is typical of a bunch of losers trying to gang up on the one who is calling out this ‘pity party’, for what it is.
Maybe that term should be renamed Pitty Party.

The booing at Heinz Field was uncalled for and showed a lack of general football knowledge on the part of the locals.
If indeed these people are Pitt people, it’s a sad excuse for alumni or supposed fans. They must check to see which way the wind is blowing before exiting their house doors in the morning. True Pitt people do not jump on and off the bandwagon.
Let’s go Pitt !

Comment by carolinapanther 10.24.10 @ 1:26 pm

solid effort and win. once again, the players overcome wanny’s incompetence, uber conservatisism and lack of guts. baldwin, sunseri and lewis were all studs today. good thing for pitt. wanny the gutless wonder reared his ugly head again in the 2nd quarter. pitt gets a big interception from dicicco and how do we capitalize on the momentum? wanny calls 2 off tackle runs, then we run a 4 yd out on 3rd and 5. then he sits on the ball to run out the half instead of trying to score. would’ve come back to bite us in the ass vs. a better team. he’ll never change.

Comment by scott 10.24.10 @ 1:34 pm

Virgil, ever here of recruiting Florida, ha ha!! quite a few teams do around the country. Who’s attacking carolina panther, virgil does the attacking against anyone who doesn’t wear blue and gold glasses. Look at the posts, he comes on before anyone and starts berating anyone who questions Wannstedt or Pitt!! Look, look above, and look at the weeks before, you tell me. I’m not allowed to defend my points??? I, and many other posters do not jump on and off, but, when we see things, we point them out. How do I jump off, as I stated, I was at the game with my wife and kids???? Because I hate the Big East football conference, I was hoping to get in the Big Ten or ACC. As long as we’re in the Big East, the only interesting games are hopefully two good out of conference games, Notre Dame and West Virginia. The rest is like watching the Ivy League———-Boring!!!!!!!! You have to start the attack and then just keep going. Hey, as long as your happy with the Muffler Bowl against Wake Forest, great for you, some of us are looking for bigger things from Pitt. Especially with all these suppossed “top 20” recruiting classes???

Comment by DAN 10.24.10 @ 3:11 pm

Ok, lets see if Virgil can just enjoy the win, and let it go, or, will he continue the attack!!

Wow! The Pitt Bloggers Finally have a worthy champion in Virgil. My commendations to him. {erha[s now some additional true Panther fans will come out of the closet to quash(figurative, of course)the boo birds. The Panthers are a good, young team and will get better. In the meantime, those of us who could not get tickets for the Pitt games can now purchase them. I will drive in from central Ohio Saturday next with a small contingent of blue and gold fans. We hope we will not be embarrassed by a small, but vocal malcontents whe seem to delight in ridiculing the home team. Win or lose the Pitt Panthers are worthy of local support. Thank you again Virgil for your loyalty and your COURAGE. Rev. George

Thanks & Your Welcome Rev. George and to carolinapanther that was quite funny, ‘A Pitty party’.
The boo birds at Heinz Field should just stay home, after watching the tape of the game, they embarrass the team, the University and the City of Pittsburgh.
If they want to boo, attend Pirate games, where ineptness is the norm and massive booing is needed.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.24.10 @ 7:35 pm

Oh…last time I checked WVU was in the BigEast conference. Or did I miss something. Maybe lay off the booze.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.24.10 @ 7:38 pm

Virg,

It’s true that 3/5ths of the O line was basically brand new and untested this season — a serious challenge…but that’s all the more reason and proof to not rely so heavily on a run attack inspite of it. Its like spitting in a heavy wind and then saying the wind is why my face is wet. Yeah, of course, so do something different to compensate, einstein. Nobody faults Wanny for these challenges, its just his unremitting refusal to adjust when things don’t work out the way he’d hoped. Dominating run blocking is hard to achieve with 3 new young guys on the line (4, counting a new tight end), so give them a break and stop asking them to look like the ’73 Dolphins or ’76 Steelers. Pass protection is easier to get and opens up more draws and counter runs for the backs — instead of ‘pahr’ runs when you ain’t quite ‘pahr-ful’ yet. Look what a well designed pass game did for Dion this week — great job by O and D for the most part v Rutgers!

Ha ha, had to put a shot in their, eh, Virgi??? Couldn’t just let it go, huh?? Yes, and if you’ve ever read my posts, you’d know that I feel by now, it should be Pitt and WVU waxing the other six, and playing to get into the BCS every year. Thanks for letting me know. You are the greatest Pitt fan ever, you’re a better Pitt fan than everyone else, I’ll just tuck my head between my tail and go. I’m not a loyal supporter, I’m a what, a “vocal malcontent”, ya, that’s it. First of all, I don’t boo, because they are just kids playing. Let’s see, My wife and I, and two daughters drive up from Cumberland, Md. for every home game, and ususally go to one away game (drivable one, admittedly), spend 300.00 at the Sheraton, tix to games, souveigners, Pitt sweatshirts, Pitt beads etc. etc. and then to dinner and Sunday breakfast at local Pittsburgh restaurants. It is usually a 500 dollar weekend at least for us (which we enjoy and look forward too). Actually, every Pitt game we go to is an “away” game for us. But, I’m a “vocal malcontent” because I’m not always rah, rah, rah and point things out that I don’t think are great. Hmmmm If you can show me one post where I “enjoy tearing down Pitt” or personally have attacked Wannstedt or any of the players, please do the research, and show everyone where I have done that??? You lump a lot of us into one group, there were a couple people who said personal things against Sunseri and Wannstedt, most of us haven’t even mentioned them by name. Now, before you rip me, Chas keeps everything, do the research where I have done that, and please let everyone know. Well, I better get going, I realize now, that is board is only for 5 or 6 of you real Pitt fans. Thanks on the info of what conference WVU is in again, I’ll try to remember!!

***WARNING*** ONLY POSITIVE PITT COMMENTS ALLOWED ON THIS BOARD, OTHERS WILL BE TAGGED AND TOWED!!!! BY ORDER OF THE PITT THOUGHT POLICE!!!!
LMAO!!!

Comment by DAN 10.24.10 @ 8:47 pm

Yes, I do tear down the Big East football conference, I hate it, I hate it for Pitt to have to be in it. Guilty as charged!!!

Comment by DAN 10.24.10 @ 8:50 pm

This game was another step in the right direction…Driving home from the game, we were listening to the call-in show on the FAN. One caller called in to say something to the effect of how bad Wanny sucks and how the game should have been over at half time and then he hung up. Well the announcer just laid him out and Pitt fans in general that found a reason to be more negative than positive about the RU game. This announcer has been very critical of Pitts coaches and also made the comment on air that “Sunseri Sucks” after the Miami game. A comment he later apologized for….His point was that everyone gets frustrated with their team, but to win a game in a blowout fashsion and then see neative comments about the coaching really is over-the- top negative.

Comment by HbgFrank 10.24.10 @ 8:52 pm

HbgFrank, I don’t think you are referring to me, I hope not, I’m not taking it that way, as, anyone can look it up (chas keeps all the posts for viewing) . My posts the past week have been to the egging on and initiating of Virgil, to where are the “negative” people. As I said, maybe there are a few really “negative” people out there, but, no one should question someones loyalty to Pitt, because they may disagree with some management or play calling of games. Perhaps that is who you are referring to. I said, and you can check it out, nice wins over Syracuse and Rutgers, let’s keep it in perspective, and let’s keep going. I don’t read all of the posts, so, maybe there are some cheap shot artists out there, the heck with them I agree, but to be chastised because you may question some things is ridiculous. Again, I didn’t question anything the past two weeks (again, look it up in chas’s previous posts), except for being called out as a group. Hopefully this is the end of this and certain people will let it go. In life, most people know, that if something is going good, there will be less friction and less feedback, when things go bad, people get up in arms and are disgruntled, been that way forever. So, if Pitt goes on a winning streak, no one should be suprised that angry posts dwindle, however, if they perform poorly, there is a coaching gaffe, get embarrassed, etc. etc. no one should be suprised to see people venting on here. You can apply that to politics, occupations and most of all, sports!!

Comment by DAN 10.24.10 @ 11:15 pm

I will never accept us celebrating wins against DIAA competition and Rutgers, UCONN, and SF….and more recently Syracuse (although they are a legitimate program with history and a track record of winning pre 2000) Sorry. We should pummel these teams year in and year out with the type of talent and tradition we have… call it a Domer attitude, but I’m sorry, it’s true. We won…so what?

And when Villanova moves up to play us in the conference, we should never ever inflate them as real competition to our program. Never. Ever. Sorry. I struggle with the thought of legitimizing Louisville and Cincy too. The only team we should be proud to beat, that remains on this schedule, is WVU and our bowl team. Once again, IMHO.

I will never celebrate a win against Rutgers.

Puhlleassse!

Cost of doing business for being in the Big East, I know.

It’s done. Move on.

Rev. George: Before you nominate Virgil for blue and gold sainthood, you might want to go back and read his posts following the Notre Dame game. He was particularly harsh in his comments on Pitt’s young QB, making jokes about his height, hinting at the unfounded nepotism conspiracy and giving him the derogatory moniker of “Sonny”. Others – Reed and DAN come to mind as examples – have come here and said, ‘I was pretty hard on Tino, but he’s starting to win me over.’ Admitting you might be wrong also takes COURAGE. Totally ignoring the fact that you might have been wrong, IMHO, is a bit hypocritical.

Virgil: Sorry to pick on you. I’ve agreed with many of your comments, and I’ve admired your loyalty to Wanny in the face of many critics. But this sudden bravado after Pitt winning games they were expected to win in a fashion that finally met most fans’ preseason expectations is a bit over the top for me, much in the same way as many were over the top in their criticism after the losses. Just one man’s opinion.

Finally, the definition of a “fan” is an enthusiastic follower of a sport or team. Nowhere in there does it say “with blind loyalty.” As hbgFrank said, “everyone gets frustrated with their team” – even Virgil – and fans tend to voice that frustration in different ways. It goes with the territory, and coaches and players pretty much understand that going in. There will always be the knuckleheads who continue to boo or criticize even in the face of a team’s or player’s success, but those people tend to get overwhelmed by the masses who simply ask their team to make them proud, win or lose, of being a fan.

Last time I checked the Big East encompassed a geographical area that contains like 1/3 of the population of the USA. Thats a lot of high school football programs to recruit from. I know that that the Big East is not an “elite” conference, but lets get real they’re not a bunch of Sun Belt Conference teams either. We are what we are. But in regards to watching a good football game, the Big East can provide that any Saturday of the season. My point is, many of the above posters are lamenting about situations that we as Pitt fans have NO control over. That’s the quality of in conference compitition. Get over it. If you’re a Pitt fan, enjoy the season, celebrate a Pitt victory, whine about the losses and move on. If Pitt’s accomplishments are invalidated by pointing out the weakness of the conference compitition every week that they win it just spoils the entire concept of strapping on the helmet and going out to play the game. This game is always going to be about 22 guys out on the field determining who wants it more that day, PERIOD. Just ask WVU how weak the Big East conference is this week! There are hundreds of good football players in the Big East with hundreds of thousands of fans supporting their teams. Go out and just enjoy the frikin game! Below the Big East there are tons of fans supporting teams from smaller colleges and/or lesser conferences in the same geographical area as the Big East. Most of the football players from those schools would have loved to be recruited by a big time football program from the Big East. But they still go out every Saturday and compete at the level that they’re at, trying to bring home a victory over the 11 guys on the other side of the ball. They’re not hung up on all that “elitism” BS. Their fans just cheer on their team and hopefully enjoy the win at the end of the day. All you people out there with higher aspirations for our conference and the Pitt football program should just learn how to relax and enjoy the process. In case you haven’t read the memo, we ain’t winning no national championship this year anyhow. Let’s not forget why we started playing the game in the first place way back in pee wee leagues. Enjoy the rest of the season, Lets Go Pitt!

Comment by Dr. Tom 10.25.10 @ 8:03 am

@TampaT, not to make this like a volleyball match going back & forth, because I think you and I agree most of the time and want our school to do well.

However let me re-post this from a previous post of mine, on the Pitt/Syracuse Live blog, I believe.

Oh and congrats to Tino Sunseri. I’ve been extremely critical of the decision to play him over Bostick. Tino played great today, I applaud him. Tino’s QB rating was an astronomical number of
223.8. If he keeps improving, this team can still improve and be very good by the end of the season.
Congrats to Devin Street as well for his first career Pitt TD, that was an incredible run after catch
Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.17.10 @ 12:52 am

So please if you’re going to slam me, at least get it right. Thanks, maybe you just missed this post. Hail to Pitt!

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.25.10 @ 8:46 am

Good post DR. Tom, you hit the nail on the head.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.25.10 @ 8:52 am

I did miss that one, Virgil. I remember the post about his ‘Cuse QB rating, but not that you made it. I should have caught that, but I was probably in an exchange with another Italian guy. 🙂 My sincere apologies.

Like you said, you and I agree most of the time, and as one who has been in your corner, I’m just asking you to tone it down a bit. It’s only two games down with five more to go in BE play. A lot can happen, good and bad.

The true whiners and negative bandwagoners will just go into hiding and never respond to outright challenges. The “frustrated fans” – who are often as loyal to Pitt as you and I – will continue to post on their own, admit they were frustrated at that time, and move forward with caution. You’ve seen that here over the course of the past two weeks. There are always exceptions of course, and like I said earlier, those folks tend to get overwhelmed by the masses.

Comment by TampaT 10.25.10 @ 9:19 am

I don’t post too often, but, the back and forth, I must comment on. Virgil, all over the place, no credibility. Dr. Tom, not bad, who doesn’t enjoy the games, however, with college and pro sports many people like to see their teams win. If you just want to watch football, for football’s sake, plenty of high school and pee wee leagues out there. As for the Big East, yes, it is what it is, that is a great point though, exactly for what many people are talking about. That is why the out of conference games are so important, Pitt lost all three, please don’t count New Hampshire and whatever a Florida International is, had we won those, the Syracuse, Rutgers and upcoming Louisville game would have all kinds of anticipation and emotion and most people could get by with the conference and who is in the conference and just enjoy Pitt. When you lay eggs, then Rutgers and Syracuse suddenly aren’t so sexy.

Comment by RONPITT 10.25.10 @ 10:05 am

All Pitt fans… thank your local Navy fan… for their team may have kept the Big East in the Champs Sports Bowl. ND needs 7 wins… has 4… and has to play USC and Utah. Pitt’s embarassing loss had Champs Sports Bowl organizers cheering as ND looked to limp into the Big East lone New Year’s Day bowl (besides BCS). Alas, the Middies showed how bad ND really is and prevented their all important 5th win. Hopefully Army can also dispatch the domers.

ND-Navy – what else can you say? Losing to ND now looks to be quite an embarassment. As I said before a few times, I had the pleasure of attending this game. Navy’s defense has zero 4 star recruits… yet, somehow, they were able to get into the back field much more than Pitt…ESSENTIAL TO STOPPING A KELLY SPREAD OFFENSE… and were better able to cover underneath routes.
Crist stats:
Navy game – 19/31 178 1 Td 2 INT
Pitt game – 24/39 242 1 Td 0 INT

This game is such an obvious indictment of Wanny’s lack of coaching intelligence. What is the difference between Navy and Pitt on defense?

Let’s look at the talent first:
Navy – link to pittsburgh.scout.com
Pitt – link to pittsburgh.scout.com

just a snapshot of recruiting classes… but you get the idea. Navy has Conference USA level talent… according to scout/rivals we have BCS game level talent.
Let’s instead look at the coaching… hard to quantify that Paul Johnson/Ken Niumatalolo have gotten exponentially more quality on field performance from their players than Wanny has… but thats another argument. Reference 2007 Navy victory at Pitt if you want a coaching comparison (2008/9 Pitt won as expected) Back to this game… its pretty simple. Whereas Pitt stayed in its usual defensive scheme and steadfastly refused to blitz, Navy added a dback and constantly blitzed. This is such an obvious adjustment when playing the spread, and Navy thoroughly crushed ND because it was made. Pitt lost to ND because of its coaching staff, pure and simple. (Tino’s play didnt help… but was enough for w) That is all you need to see as an intelligent football fan. A much less talented team beats a common opponent because it made the veyr obvious coaching adjustment that you chose not to make. How one can defend wanny’s planning or strategy after wathcing these two games is absurd to me. I honestly dont care if he wins out, we will always win in spite of him.

Pitt-Rutgers – Still have not watched game tape yet… but please folks. Relax! This is Rutgers! The team that lost to Tulane. The team that needed overtime to beat Army. I dont care if they win out and beat WVU… this team is below average at best and would get murdered by a real bcs quality team… as they did by our Panthers. The result of this game is in line with the talent spread here. I hope to watch it tonight and also hope to see that Tino has improved… from some reports I have read, however, Wanny showed up in true form in the first half. This would be the ideal result for me… wanny showing how clueless he is, with the team winning in spite of him. The lack of fan approval… both in attendance and emotion (booing) is all Stevey P and Nort need to see. This will help ensure his dismissal post season regardless of results (save a BCS win perhaps)

Dr. Tom- I owe no allegiance to the Big Least… and I will continue to support any movement by alumni/boosters to garner an invite to the Big 10/11/12. Pitt was an independent for much longer… and this football conference is an absolute joke. The performance against BCS opponents was nothing short of an epic disaster. Dr. Tom had to compare us to the Sun Belt because doing so against the Mountain West or WAC would not have a favorable outcome.

Rev George – You seem to have trouble finding the proper usage of the word “courage.” Reconnecting with some of my US Naval Academy classmates as I did this past weekend helps keep things in perspective (attended 2 years, transferred). Thus, I wouldnt label someone who posts to an online message board with questionable opinions the way you did… nor would I use ALL CAPS to stress just how much COURAGE it took to defend Wanny.

Comment by DeVanzo 10.25.10 @ 10:35 am

DAN – No way was I writing about you…I just thought that it was interesting that the same type of debate we have here regarding DW was also taking place on the post game show…The point the talk show host was trying to make was not that you can’t have critcal thoughts after a blowout win; rather he was saying that there was no place for the “this guy or that guy still sucks” comments after a blowout win.

Comment by HbgFrank 10.25.10 @ 12:36 pm

Hey, no problem hbgfrank. I’ve been critical of Wanny (actually a big fan when he was hired), but, I never let it get personal with the “sucks”, especially, with the kids. I admittedly can be hard on them, looking for big things, but, I love Pitt, as I believe everyone who searches out this website do, just different levels of showing it. No problem, Hail to Pitt!!
