Liveblog: Pitt-ND

Hope no one had too much to drink during the noon games. It is difficult to type effectively when the keys keep moving under your fingers. As for me, I’m out for the morning and early part of the afternoon doing the dad thing. One of the few pleasant and dry fall Fall weekend days in Ohio. That means stock family activity option #7 — a trip to an apple orchard. Whee.

I will be back, though, with time to spare before the game. ND is not a top-25 team at this point, but neither is Pitt. I think nationally, no one is sure where either team really is in the national pecking order. The perception/bias probably leans towards ND but they also benefit from that new coach smell.

Anyways, below the fold will be the liveblog. Most of you know the rules. It’s a moderated chat. Comments are approved or not as they come in. Reasons for not being approved range from being repetitive, trolls, ridiculously stupid, or just because I’m feeling capriciously unfair. Some of the trusted readers (regulars who have proven over time that they are reasonably sane and haven’t abused it) will get permission to comment without the approval process.

Hopewell’s Rushel Shell rushes for 392 yds against New Castle. We need to get him, Dave.

In DC this weekend. Someone pick me up with the snark on the LiveBlog. I shall return.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 10.09.10 @ 10:01 am

Watching the tape of ND being Palko-f**ked. Wanny should borrow Walt’s playbook.

Comment by steve 10.09.10 @ 11:02 am

Either the ‘cuse is actually respectable, or USF sucks. Orange over the Bulls in Tampa right now, 14-9 with about 6 left.

I think that’s the only other Big East game going on right now.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 10.09.10 @ 2:59 pm

Sorry, 13-9.

PSU gets smothered. Positive energy going in.

Comment by steve 10.09.10 @ 3:13 pm

at least there will be no QB controversy nex year for Myers

Comment by wbb 10.09.10 @ 4:23 pm

I’m at the game sitting high defense looks confused they cannot line up properly and Sunseri cannot hit the broad side of a barn he has no accuracy

Comment by James Brown 10.09.10 @ 4:29 pm

Embarrassing. Shameful. Sad. The state of Pennsylvania really needs to realize that the game has passed its coaches by…. I’m not sure which team is worse. Pitt or Penn State.

Basketball can’t get here soon enough….

Comment by Bobby 10.09.10 @ 5:08 pm

Hate to say it but Santino is not a good QB. His simply can not make a throw more than 5-7 yrds. His accuracy is laughable.

Wanny’s team is undisciplined. Special team is horrible. D-back continue to struggle.

Wanny’s continues to go with Deon when it is obvious to EVERYONE that Graham is better.

500 or less and / or no Bowl means Wanny really must go.

Comment by PITT fan in Atlanta 10.09.10 @ 5:08 pm

Time. For. Bostick.

Comment by williamsburg pitt fan 10.09.10 @ 5:19 pm

Worst coaching, worst execution, worst use of talent, worst D coord ever. Bring back Harris or Foge

Comment by matt 10.09.10 @ 5:31 pm

Just got back from 18 holes of golf. It’s 21-3. How’s everyone doing? Personally, I am done with Pitt Football as long as Dave Wannstedt is coach. See you all in Basketball season. Please everyone come in from the ledge. It is not worth the aggrivation….

Comment by Dan 72 10.09.10 @ 5:35 pm

Graham has two over 10 yard runs, the ONLY two we have. Just leave him in, Wanny.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.09.10 @ 5:38 pm

I am watching the game in Cleveland with my girls and they are calling three and outs. How does Bennett or Cignetti have jobs???

Cmon stache, you sux, all this recruiting. Apparently our recruits stink cuz they are getting dominated and don’t care. This is worse than the Walt era. Is Jackie Sherril available to come out of retirement????

Hard to be a fan any longer. Where is Ray G? Dion has lost it completely, sad but true

Comment by matt 10.09.10 @ 5:42 pm

Kelly and ND are PREPARED! That’s a novel concept. Perhaps we should try it sometime. WAY too many mistakes to win this or any game against respectable competition. I really Hate Kelly and ND…

Comment by The Hagen 10.09.10 @ 5:44 pm

You can’t hate on ND that much, because they keep us on their schedule. And as long as they play us they WON’T play Diaper Joe’s boys in Unhappy Valley.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.09.10 @ 5:55 pm

And Pitt/ND is always on National TV, so it gives us Pitt alumni leaving in far away places a chance to see us lose more often. Always a consideration, lol.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.09.10 @ 5:56 pm

While I’m glad that we scored a TD, it probably means we are saddled with Santino for the rest of the season. And beyond?

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.09.10 @ 6:04 pm

If Hutchins had a made those two chip shot FG’s, it would be 20-16 now, definitely doable.

BRING BACK CAVANAUGH

the worst playcalling on the last 2 drives that I have ever seen … no question!

Comment by wbb 10.09.10 @ 6:54 pm

Overall badnjob across the board. Where do I start?

Offense- sunseri is bad. Real bad. Can’t make a throw down field. Reads game too slowly. Plays soft.

Cignetti – stop running 5’6 deon up the middle with this o line. He is too small! No holes for him! Stop putting sunseri under the center on pass plays. He needs time to read the coverage. His thought process is to slow.

Special team- get Sandler out of there. He tries to field balls between the 10 and goal line and then let’s the ball bounce when they are outside the 10. He put us in bad field position all game.m put deon back there.

Baldwin- better effort today. I understand your frustration when it is clear that sunseri can’t make the throws.

D-backs – 22 (reid) and 25 (hendricks) are terrible. Just flat out terrible. 22 Reid was beat ALL day long. He is a jr and should be better. Hendricks is a freshman so he gets a pass.

Decicco- you are just a bad cover guy. Doesn’t matter if you are a safety or outside linebacker. You can’t cover. You are a liability on the field. Didn’t make one play today.

Wanny- pre-season BE champs? You are now 2-3. Stop playing favorites and make everyone earn their position. Decicco and sunseri must sit! Time for you to consider handing in the clip board. I want to believe but “you are who you are”. Unsuccesful head coach on all levels. Time to retire.

Pederson AD – time to demand the same success from football that Jaime dixon is giving you in basketball. You either demand it of wanny or you need to go. Suggestion for next head coach – terryl Austin (Pitt db 80’s). Defense coordinator at univ. Of Florida. Former db coach Arizona (2008 super bowl) and db coach Seattle ( 2005 super bowl).

Comment by Pitt fan in Atlanta 10.09.10 @ 7:12 pm

I hate our coach, I really hate how he ruins almost every saturday in the fall. Even when we win it feels like a loss….pull Dave aside and tell him to retire…I can’t and won’t accept this crap any longer….

New Slogan Anyone But Dave…ABD!!!
ABD

ABD!!!

Amen Atlanta. Amen.

Comment by Pitt it IS 10.09.10 @ 7:29 pm

Great synopsis Atlanta. Wannstadt has officially lost our home field advantage for the Big East games now too. We simply won’t be able to put a good amount of bodies in the seats after these performances.

Comment by CB 10.09.10 @ 7:37 pm

Blah blah blah. Not much else to say. So disgusted.

Comment by Pitt it IS 10.09.10 @ 7:38 pm

I agree with most of the comments, however, the sad or fortunate (depending on your perspective) is that we are still right in the running for the BE based on what I’ve seen of the others. WVU looks like the favorite right now but they have their flaws

Comment by wbb 10.09.10 @ 7:51 pm

While Sonny didn’t play bad for him, he missed a lot of wide open receivers, especially Baldwin, he finally connected with him when the ND safety blew the deep coverage, but still almost blew the play.
On the replay one could see Sonny threw the ball behind him and Baldwin had to reach back for it. A lot of receivers wouldn’t have made that play.
The other long tossers were just that tosses, they had NO CHANCE whatsoever of connecting with anyone on Pitt’s side. I love the remark by the nbc color commentator at the end of the game, “Sonny has a lot of upside.”
I know Zeise protects this kid, but how far does this stuff go. It’s really bizarre (not really)
Anyway, the way I see this playing out Pitt goes 7-5 or 6-6, goes to a crap bowl, wins over some Sunbelt or MAC team and Sonny is again anointed by Wannstache as the Starting QB without question (or competition). The reason being he’s only a sophomore and he has the experience. (of course this reason is conveniently forgotten when it applies to Bostick)
I’m seriously thinking of what I did in the mid 90’s, forgetting about Pitt football.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.09.10 @ 8:17 pm

Syracuse 4-1 with a sellout homecoming crowd. Stay tuned.

Comment by alcofan 10.09.10 @ 9:24 pm

I hate to say that I told you so but for years now I’ve been getting bitched at in here for saying Wannstedt was a fraud. Nice guy? Hell yeah. But he was building NOTHING here and now you see that I was right!!

Comment by Mark 10.09.10 @ 10:11 pm

Wanny is still a good coach, Dion gained positive yards on nearly every touch and almost broke 2. Defense did nothing accept for on the 3 blitzes. Damn shame, they tackled well.

Anyways, Bostick needs to start next week or we will be slaughtered in the big east all season

Comment by Dave 10.09.10 @ 10:13 pm

That tough Miami team that embarassed Pitt is being murdered by FSU….but FIU pulled a one point upset over W KY.
Fraud is way too kind of a word for what Wanny has done to this program and University. And again, it’s not the losing of a game, it’s the embarrassment of the same mistakes being made over and over year after year by the players and the head coach. I am loathe to criticize any coach for a single play call but for the life of me…how to you call a TO and give away 45 seconds of precious time …and then punt!!
And I don’t want to hear..”he changed his mind”
You take that TO and you go for it with your best shot on 4th and 5. Nothing else…

Comment by Dan 72 10.09.10 @ 10:25 pm

I’d say this loss is 80% on the players and 20% on the coaches…Wbb agree, the play calling during the last 4:55 was very hard to watch. The coaches really did not give the team the best chance they could to pull it out in the end. I mean two runs up the middle when we had the momentum? Stupid. As an aside, the genius Kelly not to be out-dumbed, called several pass plays at 2 minutes and under, thereby giving us one more chance without having to use any timeouts. However, for most of the game, I thought our play calling was fairly aggressive and well done. I say it’s mostly on the players because they are the ones that took at least ten points off the board in the first half by failing to execute. Missed receivers in the end zone, missed field goals, slips and falls and missed tackles. If I told anyone here that Sunseri would have more yards passing than Crist, with a higher QB rating, Baldwin would have over 100 yards REC, Graham would average 5.5 YPC, Dion would average 4.8 YPC, and ND would average 2.8 YPC, surely you would all think we win this game. This is a talented team that just can’t seem to get out of its own way. I don’t think the sky is falling. We don’t need to fire our coaches, or change QB’s so much as we just need to make the plays that are there to be made.

Comment by HbgFrank 10.09.10 @ 10:34 pm

More fuel to the Wanny fire…

I was at the game, and I have to say the Pitt players were sliding all over the place. Zeise reported that they had to change their cleats at the half. How can this happen?

It’s clear that Pitt wasn’t that good, but the coaching staff was awful as well.

Comment by Brian 10.09.10 @ 11:30 pm

Wanny is still a good coach Comment by Dave 10.09.10 @ 10:13 pm

Seriously???

Comment by bigt 10.10.10 @ 12:07 am

Sorry but anybody that thinks this is a talented team is delusional. They have a handful of excellent players but the truly talented teams have dozens.

Comment by Mark 10.10.10 @ 12:54 am

Do you guys really think this team is 2-3 because of the coaching? The same coaching stsff that got all that production (and 10 wins) out of Bill Stull? Do you watch other games? Do you see the talent that other teams have? Do you think that Cignetti wants to call WR screens to Henry Hynoski? I hate to say it but Sunseri is not ready and doesn’t seem to have “it” when the lights are on.

Comment by Chris 10.10.10 @ 1:29 am

I live in SEC Country and actually went to the UF / LSU game tonight. Guys if you actually go to these games it is night and day as far as coaching, talent, speed, etc. To those who say we can still win the Big East, who gives a rats ass. It is a Basketball conf and football is a joke there. Pitt is a MAC level team plain and simple. I used to say the Big East and Big Ten was good. Watch the SEC and or Pac 10 and you quickly understand why the best kids go there. Good luck Pitt on finding a new coach, i liked what Walt Harris was able to do. Face it, the AD can care less about football bc if he did hewould fire Wanny and get out of the Big East Conf ASAP. This is as sad as when Ohio State beat us 72-0 with Eddie George.

Comment by upittbaseball 10.10.10 @ 1:45 am

Chris – sooner or later PITT fans should wake up and realize the coaching staff had nothing to do with Bill Stull’s 2009 year. That was all on Bill Stull and his having a full year of starting experience under his belt – and being smart enough to capitalize on it.

What a mess yesterday – across the board we have major problem; all three aspects of the game and with the coaching staff are piss poor… a timeout to decide to punt the ball… yikes!

Comment by Reed 10.10.10 @ 5:12 am

You guys are on crack if you think this team is 7-5 or 6-6. We will be LUCKY to win another game. Seriously.

Comment by Pitt It Is 10.10.10 @ 9:53 am

If they pull it together, we still should be able to beat Syracuse, USF, Louisville, Rutgers and/or Uconn. Pitt has better talent than all those teams.
That’s 4 or 5 more wins which is 7-5 or 6-6. If you don’t think Pitt can beat these scrub teams, maybe you’re the one on crack or better yet LSD. And anything can happen in the backyard brawl and usually does.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.10.10 @ 6:53 pm

Unless the coaching staff has lost this team, we’ll find that out next week at Cuse.

Comment by VirgilSollozzo 10.10.10 @ 6:55 pm

upittbaseball – Do you realize that the AD at PITT or just about any university has no say in what conference the school is affiliated with – that would be the Board of Trustees and the Chancellor (or President).
