Non-Con Football ’10

Okay, Pitt has given us dates (and probable times) for the non-con.

Sept. 2 —- Thursday — at Utah ——- TBA — CBS Coll. Sports

Sept. 11 — Saturday — New Hampshire — 1 p.m. — n/a

Sept. 23 —- Thursday —– Miami ——- 7:30 p.m. — ESPN

Oct. 2 —- Saturday —– FIU ———– TBA —– doubtful

Oct. 9 —— Saturday —- at Notre Dame —3:30 p.m. — NBC

Yeah, that season opener at Utah is going to be rough. My impulse with Pitt’s team, a new QB. Several new O-lineman starting. New D-linemen and a new secondary. Well, I’m halfway to assuming a loss. Granted I haven’t looked closely at what Utah is returning, so maybe I’m overreacting.

I like the Thrusday night game in September (the wife will hate it), if for no other reason then at least it will be warm. Plus, the nostalgia for that 1997 Thursday night upset of Miami.

I honestly think they will lose to Utah, Miami, and Notre Dame. I know a lot of fans will dispute ND, but if Kelly can beat Pitt with Cincinnati’s talent you have to think they could with Notre Dame’s talent. Not that ND has great talent but it they had to have been recruiting better than Cincy.

I agree with Mark, next year is going to be a trying year for Panther fans, Pitt could have a better team next year but they are very over scheduled.

Utah is a very tough place to play, Miami will be difficult and yes look for ND to really turn it around, Kelly is a very good coach.

Comment by Brian Wannstedt 02.04.10 @ 5:43 pm

I was a freshman in tower A-210 when we upset Miami that night, stormed the field. God it was great.

Comment by Justin 02.04.10 @ 5:52 pm

Don’t see why we couldn’t beat the U at home. They lost to UNC this year. I knw they can be very good at times but they also can be not so good.

Comment by wbb 02.04.10 @ 6:16 pm

By all accounts, Miami will be a preseason top 10 next year. Who knows if they will live up to those expectations, but they are expected to be excellent next year. They were very young and have almost everybody back.

Comment by Mark 02.04.10 @ 6:33 pm

Defensive backfield quality will be the key.

Comment by steve 02.04.10 @ 6:37 pm

I got hit in the head by the goal post in ’97. Yes, that’s what is wrong with me. A few shots of Jager at CJ’s after the game cured my headache.

Still Thurs. games are tough on us that have to travel.

If recruiting services are to be believed, ND is loaded with talent…They may well be a sleeping giant. I’m just not sure that Kelly is not another Charlie Weis…By that I mean he is so focused on scoring points that he forgets you have to stop the other team from scoring them too. Yes, he will have better players, be he will also face a more difficult schedule. Time will tell.

Comment by HbgFrank 02.04.10 @ 7:45 pm

I was also there in 97 sitting just above the Miami tunnel. One of the most fun games I’ve ever been at. Too bad we can’t storm the field anymore…then again I dont know that we’ve won any games worthy of that but just in case it would be nice!

Comment by Coach Ditka 02.04.10 @ 8:40 pm

Last time I checked Pitt is still undefeated in the 2010 season. Until after I see what they do on the field vs. Utah I’m not putting them down as underdogs to anybody. This team has enough talent now to compete with their entire schedule with no regrets. At this point, team chemistry and leadership can make the difference between a good team and a championship team. Both of those ingredients develop annually as the team character takes shape over the summer into fall camp. This coming year could be one to remember. Who knows? We’ll see, isn’t that why they play the games?

Comment by Dr. Tom 02.04.10 @ 8:49 pm

A comment about ND. A good many Irish fans believed that ND administration again picked the “flavor of the month” in Kelly. He will obviously have an improved and spirited squad this year with many new blue chippers….but let’s see how he does over several years. As Dr. Tom said….we are still undefeated in 2010!

Comment by Dan 72 02.04.10 @ 9:01 pm

note that the last 4 recruting classes that Weis had at ND were rated Top 10. I read somewhere that it’s not always how many blue-chips, it’s how you use them, and importantly picking the right ones for your system. Note that UConn has bever had a Top 40 class .. you may remember what UConn did at outh Bend last year.

FYI — Spurs & Blair on TNT tonite at 10:30 .. he had 20 pts last night

Guys, it is February 4th.

Comment by Bobby 02.04.10 @ 9:12 pm

ND, again, blew it with Kelly. Living near SB for 10years, I personally witnessed the SB machine take down many a coach with overinflation and delusion.

Kelly will last 5 years.

Win in Year One = 8
Win in Year Two = 10
Wins in Year Three = 5
Wins in Year Four = 6
Wins in Year Five = 6

It’s pretty much the ND way with new coaches. Note: I took a couple wins away from Kelly in his first year (due to Clausen and Tate departure).

Comment by Pauly P 02.04.10 @ 9:20 pm

Non-con looks trying at first glance. I know it’s tough to start out with Utah on the road at the start of the season, but I’ve long been awaiting a Pitt game in the West. I look forward to the long drive/short flight and will do my best to represent the faithful.

Miami is on the rise, but still at a volatile stage. It’s a winable game if we have our ‘s’ together with team chemistry.

Kelly and Notoriety Dame, I have to admit, could be a nasty thorn in our side for some time to come. I can’t help but think that we got lucky stealing a few from Weis over the past few years. Kelly really seems to have the smarts to pull out W’s. He could prove to be just what the Celtic dames have been looking for.

But like it’s been said above, who knows. That’s why they play the games. I say we’re on the right course and we don’t have much else to do but let Wanny work some ‘stache-ination into the game plan and pull out the title for the BE.

By the way, what is CBS College Sports? Is that that obscure channel that hardly anybody gets?

Comment by Mark 02.05.10 @ 7:51 am

I hate that we scheduled Utah. They are consistently a very good team that gets no respect. We saw when they beat the tar out of us in the Fiesta Bowl and again when they took Alabama to the woodshed 2 years ago.

Its a no win situation for Pitt. We don’t recruit that area at all so you get nothing there. Win the game and nobody is that impressed. Lose and you have a loss to a non BCS school.

That being said, I think Pitt can win out there, I just don’t like that they’re on the schedule. I’d rather see a Big Ten, Big 12 or SEC team maybe.

Utah’s depth chart. Look at how many seniors they had on defense last season. I think we have a better shot then you might think.

Comment by Pablo 02.05.10 @ 9:22 am

Mark,
Yes CBS College Sports is an obscure channel that hardly anybody gets. It’s on Time Warner Cable in my area as CSTV (322) and the HD version CSHD (397)? It is not worth much except for the once in a blue moon Pitt game that no other channel is carrying. Can you believe that I have the HD package and CSTV the low def version and the bastards want more money for the HD version?

Comment by shadyforpresident 02.05.10 @ 10:26 am

So we’re being scheduled on Thursday nights not for jusr ESPN or ESPN2, but CBS Sports? Fantastic. I know the Big East won’t stop doing this, but I can’t stand it. I won’t get to see most of the non conference games in full this year.

Comment by Eric R 02.05.10 @ 11:22 am

CBS Sports is also on the DISH Network (Channel 152)…I have to admit, I am surprised that what could be two potentially ranked teams will be playing on CSTV on a Thurday night. Usually, the only game on CSTV is a rerun of whover Navy played.

Comment by HbgFrank 02.05.10 @ 12:21 pm

I don’t mind playing Utah, but why play a non BCS school on the road?

Comment by ltl49 02.05.10 @ 1:08 pm

i dont mind playing utah…they have been a very good team the last 5-6 years. We got them for a home and home. Only reason we are playing them is because Michigan wanted to play us next yr at michigan then at pitt a few yrs later. Pitt wanted a team for the next 2 yrs in a row. id rather play home-home with them then say ohio, buffalo, or bowling green.

Comment by mike 02.05.10 @ 1:15 pm

FWIW, SI has Utah #25, Rivals has them #22, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a newspaper known for good college football coverage has then #20. Of course the game isn’t played in rankings so I’m not saying Pitt will lose, but I think it’s clear that Utah should be very good again.

Comment by Mark 02.05.10 @ 1:53 pm

Much prefer losing to Utah. They have national respect–regardless of a BCS conference. Much better than playing a lame ass MAC school that we get NO CREDIT for winning and ULTIMATE RIDICULE if we lose.

We win that game, and our street cred goes up a ton. We lose that game and people say, “Hey, Utah is a perennially good team that has a tough home field advantage.”

I like it.

Comment by Pauly P 02.05.10 @ 8:28 pm

For what it’s worth, I just found CCSHD on the dial and I have cable through Cox Arizona

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 02.06.10 @ 8:25 pm

Nothing like putting the gem of the NC home schedule on a weeknight. I’m sure a bunch of out-of-town season ticket holders are going to have a tough choice ahead of them to take two days of vacation to go to the game or stubhub the tix to the highest bidder.

Thursday night games are fine with me, as long as they’re not at home. Saturday night games however are encouraged 🙂
