Let’s get the optimism out of the way first.

Pitt won. Always good. If you want to keep it simple. That’s the simplest part of a 63-53 final score and the best. Pitt got a win, and after a couple losses you don’t quibble with how it happens just that the Panthers came out with a win.

Other goods:

The Red Storm has lost games to Villanova and UConn. Against UConn they only trailed by 3 on the road and led ‘Nova by 1 at home at the hal. So Pitt trailing by 4 at the half was almost par for the course with St. John’s. They hang in the first half. Look like they might pull the upset. Then after the other side adjusts they stay the course and go down in double-digit defeat.

You are going to have to drag Wanamaker-haters out of the gutter after this one. He goes 2-3s on 3s (rest of the team 0-9), shoots 50% overall (60% eFG), 4-4 on FTs, 16 points, 4 rebounds,6 assists, 2 steals and only 1 turnover.

Despite (however ineffective it was) St. John’s attempt to pressure Pitt did not result in Pitt turning over the ball. Pitt only had 9 turnovers for the game.

Free throw shooting rules. 21-24 at the line.

Responding to Jermaine Dixon going out of the game. It was almost like a collective moment for the team. They got it together and did it themselves. The ball movement picked up. Defensive effort improved. Right around the 12 minute mark of the second half, it seemed that the whole tenor of the game shifted. The energy overall changed. It seemed that Pitt just got it together.

Content neutral: Shots falling was less than consistent. Some good shots in the first half, just didn’t fall. They fell in the second half when Pitt stuck with going inside. That Pitt didn’t give up on that was good. That it seemed no predicting whether it was going to go or not was less fun.

Bad: Hope Jermaine Dixon is okay.

Can someone ^$*%#@! hit a 3-pointer?

Pitt BBall is usually ugly wins, so ugly wins I’ll be more than happy to take. I hope Omar is correct, and Dixon only has a sprained ankle. That news makes the rest of the season look a lot brighter.

Comment by ltl49 01.29.10 @ 1:24 am

One bad that Chas missed was the SJU hade 10 more rebounds (and 12 more offesnive reb) … I thought it was SJ’s 2nd chance points that kept them in the game

Comment by wbb 01.29.10 @ 9:13 am

one more point: with Dixon going down, Coach Dixon was forced to used Woodall and Adams much more than he would normally do. Maybe he will spell Gibbs a little more now, and give his bench a little (not a lot) more PT.

Comment by wbb 01.29.10 @ 9:18 am

Ugly wins are just fine with me…it’s the Dixon way, and last time I checked, it’s a pretty good formula.

Chas brings out a good point that must be recognized/applauded– the tremendous improvement in FT%. Making FTs (like 21-24 last night) as a team is the missing piece in the JD “Winning ugly” formula. If there is one major gripe I have had about JD’s teams over the years has been their inability to make FTs as a team (and individually)

I’ve bitched about this for years. I hate the “we don’t recruit FT shooters” and the “they make ’em when they count” arguments that I always here from our coaches, players, and fans. I find it deplorable that any self-respecting guard in D1 basketball cannot make 80%+ FT%. I also find it deplorable that a team cannot go over 70%+ FT%.

To me, if you’re going to play an efficiency game (strong defense, high& fg attempts, aggressive), you need to be able to make the EASIEST SHOT IN THE GAME..a FT..when you are given the opportunity. The style requires it more than others!

I never forget Coach K stating in interviews, years after the collapse of his J-Williams-led Duke team in the tourney (I think against IU? Several key missed FTs), that his lack of FT work in practice throughout the season diminished its value to his players…and he regretted that..

I’m not implying that JD doesn’t put in the work with the team, just saying it’s F’IN IMPORTANT!

We are still less than 70% as a team, but data is showing that we are trending up through the BE conference play.

FT% is important, and kudos to our guys for paying attention to their FT time and delivering on gameday.

Comment by Pauly P 01.29.10 @ 10:12 am

Forgot to mention, an individual shooting 94% from the line, 3rd in the nation too…

Before Ashton, when could you ever say a Pitt player was money as he stepped up to the the FT line?

Comment by Pauly P 01.29.10 @ 10:15 am

jason matthews shot over 90% from the foul line.

Comment by wilk 01.29.10 @ 10:29 am

I think the way Pitt’s offense has evolved this season has led to the improved free throw shooting. More often than not, our guards are getting to the line rather than a post like Blair or Gray. This helps the overall free throw percentage as guards are usually better ft shooters (brandin knight notwithstanding). Most importantly, Ashton Gibbs is just an awesome ft shooter and he is surprisingly getting to the line a lot.

Comment by Omar 01.29.10 @ 10:32 am

rumor is jermaine is out 1 or 2 games. he had an MRI this morning. i guess we will know officially soon.

Comment by Omar 01.29.10 @ 10:48 am

More production in the paint is needed…Gibbs has struggeld the last three games…the team record is 1-2…Gibbs also is forcing alot of shots trying to shoot himself out of the slump which I dont like but understand because Taylor/McGhee aint given the team anything….you need more out of the post when the 3’s arent falling!

Comment by Jason 01.29.10 @ 11:01 am

Wannamker was huge last night, but I also wanted to spotlight McGhee’s efforts. Without his “out-of-thin-air” offensive presence in the second half we may not have won that game.
Say what you will about him (and I have), but Gary continues to grow as a player. The effort is always there, he rebounds, he plays solid defense, he runs the floor, and he is starting to develop some semblance of game on the offensive end. If you could only teach “hands.”

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.29.10 @ 11:35 am

“out-of-thin-air”? Wannamaker has been pretty solid all year I don’t know why people refuse to acknowledge that.

Comment by PITTapotamus 01.29.10 @ 11:45 am

oh sorry my bad, re-read and realized u meant McGhee’s out of thin air offense.

Comment by PITTapotamus 01.29.10 @ 11:45 am

I’m with Dave/Orlando on McGhee. He and his roomie Brad W. won that game down the stretch. That baby hook was sweet and he hustles. No hands but a big heart. Taylor is fading and did nothing again last night.

Comment by Bossdaws 01.29.10 @ 11:49 am

Agreed, Wanamaker has been the team’s 2nd best player behind Gibbs. It was no surprise to see him step up last night. Nasir Robinson’s game against L’Ville is what I’d call an “out-of-thin-air” performance.

Also second the props to McGhee. He’ll never be a guy you run your offense through like Gray or Blair, but those three baskets in a row he got late in the game were huge for us.

Comment by maguro 01.29.10 @ 11:49 am

Oops, I miread, too. Disregard.

Comment by maguro 01.29.10 @ 11:50 am

Not to say McGhee has great hands, but when the ball is properly entered into the post, he usually handles it. Too often our guards drive the lane, get stuck, panic, and throw a desperation pass to someone underneath at point blank range. Not too many big men have Blair’s abililty to handle that kind of pass. It was nice to see Gary succeed last night and actually have the team make an honest effort to feed him the ball down low.

Comment by ltl49 01.29.10 @ 12:06 pm

Omar – thanks for the update on Dixon. When he went down last night, it looked like a potentially bad ankle sprain to me. If he only misses a couple games, that would be good news.

It will be interesting to see what the lineup looks like without him. My expectation is that Gil Brown will start, with Wanamaker shifting to the 2 guard. Although he didn’t score much from the floor last night (if at all), I thought Brown did several other things that really helped. His defense was good, and he also dribble penetrated to the foul line area well, which led to foul shot opportunities, as well as open passing lanes.

Woodall also played more under control last night. They are going to need more of that, particularly if Dixon is out for a time.

Comment by Pantherman13 01.29.10 @ 12:15 pm

Woodall kind of reminds me of Wannamaker when he was a frosh … some potential but often out of control, mostly playing too fast. I would have hoped that after being here for a full year, he would be a bit more polished but I agree that he could become a key reserve down the stretch.

Comment by wbb 01.29.10 @ 12:31 pm

Watched a bit of the South Florida/Seton Hall game last night, which South Florida won in overtime. I think USF will be a tough match-up for us on Sunday. Certainly no pushover.
James is a stud, Jarrid Famous (a recruit we whiffed on) looked very aggressive in the win, and Howard is solid. If Gilchrist was healthy, I’d be really concerned.
Should be interesting. I’ll be there. Hopefully we can get up for the early noon start and be ready to play coming out of the gates.

BTW – Dokish on Famous in April of 2009 (link to bit.ly):

“Ideally, they want a center, but the only center out there now that they are looking at is Jarrid Famous, and he isn’t very good.”

Keep in mind Famous is averaging 12/8 (albeit, with a lot of turnovers). Those numbers are comparable to what we’re getting out of McGhee and Taylor combined. Whoops!

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.29.10 @ 12:36 pm

Very nice second half of basketball last night. As soon as they extended the defense out just beyond the 3-pt line, they really disrupted whatever it is SJ wanted to do. I thought Woodall in particular proved a really pesky menace up top and was glad to see him contributing with Dixon out. And Gilbert pretty much locked down Mason. So that was that. The lack of O-rebounds was really apparent, but in fairness, we were throwing up a lot of long bricks early in the shot clock.ffensively, we got back to better ball movement and spacing. It’s cool to have Wannamaker and Brown slashing in like they do. Hopefully other teams will try to over compensate and that will open up easy dishoffs for those guys.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 01.29.10 @ 1:02 pm

Agree with Bossdaws, Taylor was not a factor at all last night, had 10 min with no pts, no shots attempted, no rebounds. He is getting worse with each game instead of better. He was showing flashes and gradually getting better all the way up to the Indiana game. I dont recall our past McDonald’s All-American’s taking this long to adjust (Charles Smith, Bobby Martin and Brian Shorter)during their respective freshman campaigns. I know he is still a freshman and is still learning the game at the college level, but something isnt clicking. Perhaps an injury his is playing through; perhaps he is homesick; perhaps he is not happy about playing out of position (playing the 5 instead of the 4). On another note: the injury to Dixon will force Jamie to play Woodall more, which will not only give Gibbs some rest, but hopefully allow Gibbs to play more at the 2, a position he is more suited to play, and the O can run more plays for him off the 2 than the 1.

I cosign what some others have already said, I thought McGhee was fantastic, especially down the stretch. They’ve been running a play, especially since Nas’s big game against UL where the 4 (Nas or Gil) comes to the high post at the elbow and runs a pick and roll with Gary that keeps turning into an easy dump and slam. McGhee has improved so much, and I’m proud of him. It reminds me of the change in Aaron Gray’s game between his sophomore and junior years, where he dropped a ton of weight, moved considerably better, and you could see the improvement just from watching him in the offense. Gary isn’t as skilled as Gray was, but no one on this team plays harder every night, and he plays his role to a T (70% from the floor!?!). As Taylor continues to be something of a disappointment, Gary deserves accolades for what he brings to the team.

Also, hell yeah Brad. Great game.

Hope Dixon gets back quickly. Pitt should be able to handle South Florida, but a trip to Morgantown without their leader and best defender will be tough.

In order, here’s who needs to step it up while he’s out:

1) Woodall – time to take the training wheels off and play like a sophomore and the player Jamie recruited: No turnovers, aggressive defense, and get others shots. He has shown flashes of the ability to do all three. NOW IS THE TIME!

2) Gibbs – Needs to be a little tougher on D, draw a few fouls going to the hoop (not really his game, but he needs to try) and make the shots he was hitting earlier.

3) Brown – Needs to pick up some of the minutes and more importantly the scoring.

4) Wannamaker – Continue scoring, and embrace Dixon’s stopper role guarding the other team’s best perimeter player.

5) Everyone else – might we see Miller get another shot like Adams did last night? Will Adams get some more productive minutes? How about Lamar Patterson, is he destined for an “injury” that leads him to a redshirt or will he be pressed into duty? Nas and Gary could help by doing a little more, too.

Oh and for the record, that first half last night was absolutely was brutal! The positive spin would be that both teams played good defense, the reality is that both teams STUNK on offense. Had I not been at the Pete, I would have changed the channel and watched the Pens get beat.

Comment by Boubacar Aw 01.29.10 @ 3:40 pm

I believe I read last week in the P-G is that Patterson along with Zanna are headed for redshirts … and unless someone else decides to transfer, Miller is the likely candidate to follow the Cassin Diggs path.

Comment by wbb 01.29.10 @ 4:20 pm

… as an add-on to above post … Miller is likely to leave if JJ Moore qualifies which still is a big if.

Comment by wbb 01.29.10 @ 4:40 pm

Trib is reporting Dixon is day to day with a sprained ankle.

Comment by pidoublet 01.29.10 @ 7:36 pm

South Florida looks like another Seton Hall-type game to me.

A team that usually sucks, but is actually playing some tough (if not always 100% successful) basketball.

I’m just not sure if this is the year where we can immediately count road games against those types of teams as automatic wins. I just hope our guys aren’t looking forward to the big WVU game next week.

Dave in Orlando and Jimbo C… make good points about USF. They now have some talent and are learning to win in the BE. They won’t be a pushover as some here think especially if our perimeter struggles continue and Dixon isn’t available to help contain Jones.

As a point on that, Andy Katz picked this one as his “upset special” this week out of all the games. Bad omen ’cause he’s 2-0 so far.

Like Dave, I’ll be there to watch our guys prove Katz wrong.

Hail to PITT!

Comment by TampaT 01.30.10 @ 10:03 am

off topic but interesting tidbit from Chris Peak on Pantherlair radio show today:

Pitt recruit Mark Myers has been selected to QB Ohio in Big 33 game, while Pitt recruit Anthony Gonzalez is a PA QB. Of course, Gonzalez just had surgery so his status for the game may be up in the air.

BTW, Myers can be seen today at noon on NFL network QBing the USA team in an all-star game … while the Senior Bowl is on same network at 4 with D Dickerson on the North squad.

Comment by wbb 01.30.10 @ 10:11 am

Dixon and Katz are tight. Might Jamie have suggested this upset special to Andy as a way of motivating his team? I guarantee that it will make the bulletin board at the Pete this week.

Comment by Boubacar AW 01.30.10 @ 12:49 pm

If anyone just saw the drive engineered by Mark Myers for the USA Team has to be excited. He made 4 perfect passes and got props from the announcers. They didn’t let him throw it into the endzone and the drive ended with a blocked field goal but Myers looked like he had the goods. A lefty to boot (see Tyler Palko). The future is bright.

Comment by Jeff in CPa 01.30.10 @ 12:54 pm

They are chanting Karen Sypher to Patino at WVU. ESPN is muting out the chant.

Comment by Freebird 01.30.10 @ 2:23 pm

I agree with Jeff, Mark Myers looks like the real deal at OB. From what you could see during the game, he has a strong arm with good throwing mechanics and is accurate. He’s definitely a drop back passer, but he appears big and strong and can take a hit. Looks like a great catch for Pitt.

there was supposedly some secretive high level meetings a few days ago plus one scheduled next week which fuels a lot of speculation … obviously since the B10 expansion is out there, then rumors will circulate. There are also a few posters on the Pitt boards who claim that they have heard from reliable sources that this will be the case.

I’ve seen some these speculative rumors (for lack of better phrase) turn to be true and I have seen them to be just rumors … who knows?

What I fnd puzzling is that all of this speculation seems to be coming from Pitt people and not from anyone connected to the B10 (other than their own bloggers reading the Pitt boards.) Unless something more is uncovered, I refuse to take anything to heart at this point.

Comment by wbb 01.31.10 @ 12:02 pm

IMO Zanna is too raw to improve his skills by next season to compete especially if we move to the Big Ten. Use the spot for a more advanced skilled player.
