Quote sheet from the game. Strangely nothing from Louisville right now.

Quoting Pitt Head Coach Jamie Dixon, On Nasir Robinson:

“I love that kid. I remember recruiting him. You find things wrong with him but he plays so hard and just keeps getting better. He brings energy, is positive, and works hard. He played well against UConn. His numbers weren’t big, but his energy and his positive attitude were. He’s finding his role on the team. He’s a good kid and I’m proud of him.”

On the atmosphere:

“It was tremendous. I always say don’t take crowds for granted. It’s easy to root for an unselfish team like ours. They are tremendous and always are. We have a special place at the Peterson Events Center.

Quoting Pitt’s Nasir Robinson, On his play:

“Once I got my first bucket, I got into a grove and just kept rolling. I’ve been working on my free throws and I was able to concentrate more and make more of them.”

Quoting Pitt’s Brad Wanamaker, On his final free throws of regulation:

“By far, those were the hardest free throws I’ve had to make. The guys just told me to relax and imagine it was practice and there was no one around. I did and I hit both of them.”

On his key three point shot:

“Coach designed a play during the time out and it worked. They thought Ashton was the shooter and they followed him and left me open. Jermaine got me the ball and I made the shot.”

31 straight at home.

At the start of conference play, most of us hoped Pitt could go 3-3 over the first 6 games. Now, when the time comes that Pitt loses it will feel like a disappointment. Awesome.

I have to say that I turned the TV off is disgust when we were down by 6 with less than a minute left. Went to the gym and came back to read about the loss, but to my surprise they had pull it out! Never again will I do that. This team is tough. Great win.

Pittastic don’t feel bad the two people sitting next to me left the Pete at around the same time and missed the comeback and OT. What a game!!

Unbelievable this team. I am glad that I extended my recording by 30 minutes(I always do). Robinson went nuts, an absolute “warrior”. This game gave me that stomach needle pain I love so much.

They looked good even though our perimeter game wasn’t pretty. That’s being nice.

The Georgetown game is going to be nasty. That’s the way we are growing up watching so I am going to let it be. Definitely loving this right now.

One more quote from a guy who I hope gets little sleep tonight:

Pitino could recall only one tougher-to-take loss — his Kentucky Wildcats’ 104-103 overtime defeat to Duke on Laettner’s catch-and-shoot play in a 1992 NCAA regional final that is considered one of college basketball’s greatest games.

“Outside of Duke and Christian Laettner, this is the worst loss I’ve experienced, watching a team play so well and put itself in a position to win,” Pitino said.

We are witnessing history as it is being written. The Panther pride is bubbling. It is an adventure to view each game and marvel at the new stars being unveiled. No one knows how long this drama will go on, but we out of state fans are enjoying every moment. The forthcoming schedule is formidable as have been the previous contests. Whatever the future holds for this Pitt crew it is ALREADY a season to remember. Hail to Pitt! George from Columbus

Let me say thank you, thank you very much. I live in Louisville and these last two years have not been fun. But this game, my god i’m still high. I called some coworkers and they just turned the game off once OT started. Pitt is always it.

Comment by Musser 01.17.10 @ 12:56 am

i turned the tv off too. i was getting too frustrated. we’ll take it, what a win.

When you think of all the games that we have lost like this one, it sure feels good to have one go our way. Great article by Cook. Wanamaker overcomes his turnovers and makes the three and two foul shots. How about us being the one to make the foul shots?

Robinson comes up big when Brown has an off game.

McGhee continues to do what is absolutely necessary. This was a tough match-up for him, but he hung in there, got rebounds, blocked a shot, made a dribble and started a break. He, like this team continues to get better.

Coach Dixon’s character permeates this team. When the adversity comes and it surely will, after all this is the BIG EAST, this team will not quit.

It hasn’t been this much fun being a Panther fan in a long time.

Sorry to change the subject, but does anyone know the name of the player introduction song this season?

Comment by Ryan 01.17.10 @ 12:00 pm

Still doing my best to keep from getting TOO high on this team, but they’re making it very hard. I’ll now be on the edge of my chair, biting my nails, tapping my feet, etc. during the G’town game instead of kicking back with a cold one. Great to see Nas step up with a big game. The guy works so hard in every game – even from the bench – that it’s deserved. Give Gil Brown some credit for the props he gave Nas after the UConn game. I think it gave him a needed confidence boost. That’s great leadership on Gil’s part.

The game defined the Panthers gritty, gutsy, hardfought, never say die attitude. Makes you feel proud. Hail to Pitt!

I would appreciate a clarification. I saw the last few minutes of regulation and OT at the lounge at 7 Springs, and couldn’t hear the game. While I recorded it and thought I did the 30 minutes extension feature on ComCast .. apparently I didn’t .. thus it ended with about 2 minutes.

Now to my question … at the end of regulation, Gibbs tried a long 3 with less than 10 seconds left which turned into a long airball. The refs apparently ruled the ball was deflected but it appeared to me from afar that Gibbs arm was clearly hit. Am I wrong or was that a deflected shot?

Comment by wbb 01.17.10 @ 1:14 pm

i’m not sure if they hit the ball but gibbs arm was clearly hit. i have no idea how they missed it. if i had to guess, i don’t think anyone hit the ball but they gave it to us anyways since they didn’t call the foul.

Comment by jtads14 01.17.10 @ 1:28 pm

WBB, The way it looked to me and the announcers was that it was a foul. The refs saw it as a blocked shot so we got the ball back. At the time it would have been 3 foul shots for Gibbs for the win.

Comment by gc 01.17.10 @ 1:37 pm

Since Wannamaker made the foul shots and we won, that call wasn’t important, however, it could have well made te difference between W and L. Thanks for the responses .. I thought his arm was clearly hit and didn’t understand how it was not called.

Comment by wbb 01.17.10 @ 1:59 pm

i owe nasir robinson a formal apology, but since i dont know him this will have to do.

Nasir,

I’m sorry for thinking you were not good at basketball.

It’s one game. Let’s not anoint Nasir as the Second Coming just yet. He still has a lot of flaws in his game. Excellent game on his part, but he has a lot of consistency to go yet before we can call him an excellent player.

Comment by Mark 01.17.10 @ 3:15 pm

Simply think of Nasir as this Decade’s Jaron Brown, Mark.

He’s a fighter and plugger every game.

Comment by steve 01.17.10 @ 4:23 pm

Maybe a lesson here — many of us here have been pretty hard on McGhee, Wannamker and Robinson … all of whom have come thru over the past few games. If we learned something from FB season, our chief concern should probably be that these players give great effort, and as Pitt BB fans, we very rarely get cheated in this departrment.

Comment by wbb 01.17.10 @ 5:10 pm

My biggest gripe with Nas has always been that he can’t finish. He gives everything he has, which probably makes up for size and talent deficiencies. That said, if he can’t make easy baskets around the rim, it doesn’t matter. If we can just get a portion of his efficiency from yesterday every game, we’d all be very happy Panther fans.

Comment by jason 01.17.10 @ 5:34 pm

My biggest concern from the game was G. Brown’s lack of offensive. He looked hesitant and it was strange not to see him in the game at crunch time. guess he is still getting back into game form, but it still bothered me.

Nevertheless, great game. Amazing tenacity. And the free throw shooting has now won this team at least 2 games this year.

Comment by Carmen 01.17.10 @ 7:43 pm

Attention to… and execution of.. detail! I would take a tape of the Pitt /l’ville game break it down and use it at clinics. Jamie Dixon is a detail guy and that’s great, but somehow this year this team is getting it! Great comment in the PG this morning about how Jamie does not “pull” a player after a mistake or embarress him publically…ala Huggins, Pitino et al.

Don’t know how far this ride will go but if it stops tomorrow, it has been fantastic.

Comment by Dan 72 01.17.10 @ 8:09 pm

knowing that Brown didn’t score whe watching the replay, I was interested to what the issue was. Personally, I thought he made a lot of good plays in helping the break the press when we he was in and noted that he was very unselfish on the offensive end … or maybe, he was just too unagressive. Nonetheless, at least he didn’t take foolish shots.

Isn’t it something that a week ago, we thought Brown should be playing 30 plus minutes at the 4 position instead of Robisnon. Maybe one of th big keys to Pitt’s success is having a few options of going with the hot hand.

Comment by wbb 01.17.10 @ 9:35 pm

While Pitt had a little luck with L’ville missing foul shots, the fact is, regardless of the talent, regardless of the opposition, JD put this team in a position to win the game, and they did. That is all you can ask for from a coach. The great ones do it consistently, and I think JD is approaching that now. There were two really horrible calls against Pitt late in the game, yet they just moved on, and never lost focus, or pouted, or worse. I never thought anything could ease the pain of that Villanova loss last year. But what I have seen this year tells me JD has turned a corner, and we will not be seeing too many repeats of that game in the future. Maybe his experience with the U-19 team gave him a sense of perspective, or maybe it is just what you gain from experience. I think he is the class of the conference, and maybe the best coach in the game right now.

One and only concern would be starters wearing as the season moves on. The rotation is only 8 deep, which is acceptable, though tougher in the Big East. I think at some point, Richardson, Adams, or Miller need some minutes.

Comment by PO'd Panther 01.17.10 @ 10:00 pm

Eight deep, including two freshman off the bench, is awesome against the likes of UConns, Syracuses, and Louisvilles of the world. Very few teams will 8 or more in a steady, effective rotation. Especially against the level of competition we’ve been playing. The others will get time when we can open up leads on the USFs and St.John’s of the world.

Not sure why the player conditioning and practice methodology are constantly being brought up here. Pitt plays a methodical half-court offense and rarely presses. It’s never been an issue with our program. I’ve only seen it an issue in college basketball when there are players with 30+ m/per game and up tempo style of playing.

Hey, AP writers voted us into the #9 spot this week! With GT at home, and games @SH, SJ’s, and USF, we’ve got a chance to put some good milage on this magic bus…..Good game tonight at 9pm EST: Texas vs. Kansas St.
