Win or Crash

I have to admit, I like bravado more than cliches. It’s refreshing and much more honest.

“We’re not playing for co-championships,” Kelly said Monday.

As they prepare for Saturday’s showdown against No. 14 Pitt at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field in the fifth installment of the River City Rivalry, Kelly and his players are interested in only one thing: winning the league title outright and securing the automatic BCS bowl berth that goes with that title.

If the fifth-ranked Bearcats lose to Pitt (9-2 overall, 5-1 in the league), UC (11-0, 6-0) will share the league championship and will then have to hope to land one of the four BCS at-large bids, which could be an iffy proposition.

“You can put it any way you want and I’m sure it will go in the media guide that way,” Kelly said of the possibility of being co-champs. “But I know this: we’d be extremely disappointed. There’s only one thing we go into with a goal and that is to win a championship.”

Of course when it comes to the ND job, then cliches and non-denials are a different thing for Kelly. He’s been the rumored pick since last season. Though, the rumor mill seems to be swinging to the defensive minded pick like TCU’s Gary Patterson.

The Big East scheduled with the expectation that Pitt, Cinci, WVU and/or Rutgers would be fighting for the Big East title. Cinci Coach Kelly saw it coming.

“When I saw Dec. 5, I told our guys that we’re going to have to be at this all year,” the UC coach said. “This is probably going to come down to the last game of the year.”

And now Pitt has to see about not ending its season poorly.

Q: Paul, I think 10 wins is a must for this team and they have, or will have had three shots to get it. If that doesn’t happen would you consider the season a failure in terms of next steps?

ZEISE: I agree with you. If Pitt finishes 9-4 — with a loss in some non-descript bowl game to some mediocre SEC or Conference USA team — it will be a huge disappointment. I don’t know if failure is the right word, because they did win nine games — though the competition had something to do with that — but to me it would be a disappointment. Losing to West Virginia this year was not a good thing and there isn’t a positive spin to be put on it. I think if Pitt had beaten WVU, then the season is a success and this week is just gravy win or lose. But in losing that game, the Panthers really need to win this one in order to make a definitive statement about where the program really is and that it is indeed in better shape than it was six or seven years ago.

Ending the season on a 3-game losing streak would render all criticism that Pitt built its record on bad to mediocre teams completely valid. It would mean Rutgers would likely constitute the best win of the season and not a single win over a team that finished in the top-25.

There is no sense in worrying about a bowl game and what would happen there. Right now the attention is on Cinci.

“We want to turn it loose on Saturday and play as good as we can,” Wannstedt said. “We just didn’t make enough plays (against West Virginia), but we’ve kind of moved on.”

“This week, because it’s like a playoff game, I try to reflect back and give them a few scenarios of what I’ve been through — NFL playoffs and college championships. I tell them what we need to do to be ready. Right now, they have a thousand thoughts going through their minds. They all want to play their best game. They all want to win the championship.

“I want them to just clear their minds, and think of the one, two or three things we need to do to be prepared to win,” Wannstedt added. “Basically we’ll be ready to play as good as we can play. Obviously, the kids are excited. This is going to be a unique day.”

Okay, fine. Might as well get this out of the way since Coach Wannstedt made the comparison. Coach Wannstedt had 3 appearances in the playoffs as a head coach — once with the Bears and twice with the Dophins. His overall playoff record is 2-3 and 1-1 at home. Take from that what you will.

That message of moving on and letting go of a disappointing performance in Morgantown seemed to be the team them.

While the Panthers gathered Saturday morning to sort through their issues before the Big East title game against No. 5 Cincinnati next Saturday at Heinz Field, they left Milan Puskar Stadium without pointing fingers.

Instead, defensive end Greg Romeus pointed toward what really matters. If the Panthers can survive the Bearcats, they can clinch a Bowl Championship Series bid.

“You learn from every game,” said Romeus, who had seven tackles and a sack. “We’re blessed to have an opportunity to win the Big East.”

Time to take that opportunity.

“We want to turn it loose on Saturday,” I hope Wannstedt is true to his word. The only game I truly saw Wannstedt turn it loose was in the upset of WVU. If Dave doesn’t let his conservative nature get in the way of his coaching, he will give these kids a chance to win. Be aggressive on defense, because if you sit back and don’t pressure the QB and receivers, you are going to get your butt handed to you. For Wannstedt to do that goes against his personality, so for that reason we could have a long day. But, if he lets it all hangout, Pitt has a great chance to win. This game is as much to do with coaching, as the players on the field, so this game will show if Dave’s up to the task. Play loose and aggressive and lose, no problem, play tight and scared, and lose, just a repeat of what we saw at Morgantown this year. Wannstedt always wants his athletes to learn something from the previous game, so I hope the same rule applies to himself. Hopefully, this team will play Saturday’s game with emotion and energy, because both we absent at WVU this year. Also, please no 53 and 46 yd. field goals! Go Pitt

Time for everybody to step up, players, coaches, and fans! This is a huge game for the program and where it goes from here.

no.. dont be aggressive on defense. everytime we blitz we get torched. lets stick to the game plan.. lots of lewis, dickerson, baldwin and than pepper in some shanahan, turner, byhnam and mcgee. We should wear them out in the 4th quarter.

defensively. get pressure with the front four. force turnovers ..keep pike in the pockets. hope berry is healthy..

This is our game..and we will win… I said 10-2 in the beginning of the year

Nope, gotta agree with ltl49, Pike will kill our secondary if we lay back. The defense has to force the issue with key blitzes and or misdirection defensive rushes to upset the QB/Receivers timing of routes. Let it all hang out and make them beat us. If we get 4 or 5 sacks, we’ll be hurrying Pike enough for him to make mistakes which equals at least a potential for tunovers. This will be a key to this game. Mark my words, we get 4 sacks and 2 turnovers, we win the game.

Not to argue the point of aggressiveness, but we cannot be predictable. Too often good teams and coaches game plan around the other teams tendencies. I’m not saying to blitz and sell out every play, but blitzing and tight corner coverage would certainly go a long way towards keeping Pike and company off balance in certain situations. Also, the reason we get torched on blitzes is mainly because our corners are playing miles off the ball. Go to tight man coverage when you blitz and let the cards fall where they may. Lastly, Wannstedt stated in one of his pre WVU press conferences that the defense has only blitzed about 10 times all season, so we haven’t had too many opportunities to get burnt. Let the dogs out and go down swinging. Again, referring back to our WVU upset, we let it all hang out and the results were pretty satisfying.

In case you haven’t heard from the constant reminders, PITT leads the nation in sacks (currently with 43). They haven’t done that by blitzing, they’ve done it with a dominant front four, a staple of Wanny’s D. We PITT fans occasionally get our Steeler D & our Panther D confused. While we love a heavy dose of Lebeau’s defense…that hasn’t been the formula for good defensive games for PITT.

Not to discredit our front four and not to confuse the Steelers with the Panthers (I wish), but to allow Pike to sit in there with corners playing off, is asking for a repeat of last year. Yes, we have a year’s more experience, but so do they. If you remember last year, Pike is a fairly elusive QB, and this offense is far superior than any we’ve faced this year. So, be predictable, and allow Pike to pick us apart! I’ve watched teams play off Cincy’s receivers this year and Pike and the other Cincy QB made them pay. As I stated before, mix it up on defense and give them some looks they don’t expect.

Comment by ltl49 12.02.09 @ 4:30 pm

I agree that if we don’t shock on defense, Pike will pick us apart just like last year. It’s that wild hair mentality that sets the pace and gets into a team’s head, along with pumping up a home crowd. Give something for the ketchup basin to get rowdy about.

On the other side of the ball, Wanny has to be aggressive and exude the sense that NO ONE wants this game more than Pitt.

Set the tone.

Am I missing something? How would Gator Bowl bypass a one-loss Cinci team if Pitt wins and Cinci doesn’t get an at-large bid?

Easy, it’s not about the team’s “Quality,” it’s all about the team’s “Quantity,” Quantity of Fans. That’s what makes the college bowls an absolute joke: it doesn’t matter how good you are, it only matters how many fans in the stands you have.

Comment by ltl49 12.02.09 @ 10:03 pm

Our front four are really good on D but so is the Cinny O line and Pike, come on, he’ll be playing on Sunday next year. Hes great and is MOBILE. We play it like we have all year and depend on just our front four and we’ll end up with no sacks, a bunch of hurries for gains by Pike and a disappointing loss. I want to see how our secondary can perform out on an island every once in a while with a LB or safety blitz when least expected. Go for the troat. This is the last game of the season that means anything anyhow w/o a win. So like Wanny said “BRING IT’!

Comment by Dr Tom 12.03.09 @ 10:09 am

Dr Tom, I like the way you think! Throw caution to the wind and go for the win. Sometimes we give too much respect to our opponents. Seriously, I can’t see our secondary holding up if Pike is given time to throw. This is a solid Pitt team, but there’s no doubt in my mind that our secondary is certainly our weakest link. So Wanny, as you stated ” turn it loose on Saturday,” or all winter you’ll regret you didn’t.

Comment by ltl49 12.03.09 @ 1:11 pm

I still think it was a very bad loss to WV. If Pitt wins on saturday they will be fine if they lose, you will need a trip tik.

If Pitt wins, curious to see if Cinci gets the Gator or not.
