LiveBlog: ND-Pitt

Special LiveBlog for those of you unable to get to the game. Yes, I’m at the game, but Lee in Altoona will be running the show tonight. Lee is an original poster to this site back when it started.

He’s stuck in Altoona because it was his son’s birthday today and, well, he’s whipped. Still he’s going to run the show tonight.

I’ll be tweeting, and set up the live blog to show my tweets during the game. I’ll also be tweeting during the tailgating — provided I’m conscious. I’ve yet to see Pitt win against ND while tailgating on the North Side. That needs to change.

Wanny is live on Gameday.

Comment by Panthoor 11.14.09 @ 11:07 am

Cannot make the game at Pitt. Watching on my home big screen. Was there 5 years ago and think the ND loss that day set the Pitt Football Program Back at least 2 years. Certainly hurt Wanny’s street cred. Today it all changes. Wanny has been very smart setting up Pitt’s D to play with speed to counter the QB read offenses of WVA Cinncy SFla et al. That small D line will be a bit of a problem for Pitt tonight but overall Pitt;s O will win this game and the D will come thru in the end. Like Sandler to have a big game returning kicks…Irish special teams are not so special. Will be listening for Sweet Caroline.
For those of you going…enjoy this win!

Hail to Pitt!

WVU got the shaft last night, Indiana just got a bad call at PSU, hope we don’t need it but a little home cookin would be nice.

Tonight we find out if we’re for real. This is what it is all about, Don’t hold anything back. It is time for a can of whoopass. (apologies to the Waterboy). I plan on loosing my voice tonight. Let’s drown out the domers.

Let’s go PITT!

Comment by gc 11.14.09 @ 1:43 pm

I’m pumped for this game and wish I could be there with my peeps. Let’s take ND out and make them wish their coach wasn’t so grotesque.

Comment by Jeff 11.14.09 @ 9:29 pm

Ugh, all the NDphiles are going to blame the refereeing. “NO PENALTIES FOR PITT WAAAAH”

Comment by Will H. 11.14.09 @ 10:28 pm

Well, the fumble at the end honestly wasn’t what I would’ve called if I were a ref. It’s one of those deals where if it was ruled a fumble initially, I probably would’ve let it stand, but not if it was ruled a pass.

But then again, the defense was pretty fired up and I didn’t see them converting on 4th and 16 (even though they converted on 3rd and 19 earlier thanks to the idiotic decision to rush 3!)

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 11.14.09 @ 11:37 pm

Let’s get Mr. Berry healthy ASAP!

Comment by Randy 11.14.09 @ 11:40 pm

Wanny npot calling time out with Pitt 3rd down and late almost killed us. But …this is his year.

Please never play prevent D again and take your foot off the accelerator.

Hail to Pit….Great …but scary win.

Comment by Dan 72 11.14.09 @ 11:41 pm

Who’s idea was it to rush 3 lineman that allowed ND offense to get going? We caught a break and won despite the early prevent scheme. 11-win season is within our reach!

We will need more healthy bodies In the secondary against UC. The extra time before the theBrawl is a goo thing. Time to refocus on the Hoopies.

Comment by Randy 11.14.09 @ 11:53 pm

Great win.

However something is burning me up a bit. For those who watched on ESPN…Billy Stulls parents should be ashamed of themselves. ESPN did a couple minute story on Bill’s parents. They have given up their seats in the stands in favor of the standing room only ramp in the open end of the stadium. They said that they couldn’t take the booing. Come on. Really??? I seriously doubt that fans are still booing Stull. Maybe the first game of the season but that was somewhat justified after the Sun Bowl. Since, I am sure that 99% of Pitt fans are pleased and do not boo. They looked absolutely pathetic. His dad’s face was embarrassing. It left me wondering where Stull got his ca-hones from. The thing that burns me is that they made the university look silly. Mr. Stull, quit your woe-is-me non-sense and sit in your seat. Show some pride in your son. He is having a great season. Anyone that is booing him now will only look as ridiculous as you did tonight on national television.

Hail to Pitt

Comment by Black Hollywood 11.14.09 @ 11:53 pm

ABC/ESPN shouldn’t have put Stull’s parents on tv – his parents didn’t do anything wrong. It was very awkward. They have a right not to want to hear their son get booed. Just because he has earned respect from people don’t mean his parents have to respect the fans who booed a kid.

Changing the subject, Dion Lewis should be in the heisman discussion if players like CJ Spiller are. Lewis’ numbers are just as good or better than most of the players at the top of the list, and if Pitt wins the next two games he will be on a top 10 team. Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Howard 11.15.09 @ 12:04 am

Black Hollywood..relax …we won!

Comment by Dan 72 11.15.09 @ 12:08 am

Lou Holz is drunk again! How about Ray Graham? Also, I agree that ABC was reaching and the Stull family should be proud, not hiding.

Comment by Randy 11.15.09 @ 12:09 am

It was wierd that they just kind of talked about his parents, with his parents awkwardly standing 5 feet away from the reporter, and didn’t talk to them! It was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen during a live football telecast.

But I do think his dad needs to get over it. I understand that nobody wants to hear their kid get booed. But look, their boy is getting a free ride at a top 20 public university, starting on a division 1 team, gets to be on TV every week, probably doesn’t pay for too many drinks in Oakland, and is more than likely pulling some pretty hot tail and lots of it.

I’d say homeboy’s leading a pretty charmed life! But with all of that cool stuff comes the fact that you’re a public figure and you may face criticism. Now I’m sure some people went too far with it, but damn, that was over 2 months ago. Things are good. Get over it!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 11.15.09 @ 12:12 am

Onto actual on the field stuff.

The prevent defense was killing me!

The rushing of 3 on that 3rd and 19 was as bad as it got.

Look, I know you want to make sure everyone’s covered and no big plays are given up. But I think rushing only 3 was a bit excessive, no? You could’ve rushed 4 or 5 and probably not have given up the needed 20 f***ing yards!!!

I guess I’m mainly just pissed because at that point I was all settled in to enjoy laying a nice ass-beating on the Irish, and suddenly the momentum seemed to turn with that play.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 11.15.09 @ 12:18 am

Brent M. said that we “like” football in Pgh. What a weird thing to say since even “love” is an understatemt. HTP!

Comment by Randy 11.15.09 @ 12:20 am

The scary endiing really was almost entirely due to A. Berry being Injured. Injuries hurt because no one prepares for them… But jabba the hut took advantage.

Comment by Randy 11.15.09 @ 12:25 am

don’t think that you can blame the prevent in this case. Berry was out. Gary was banged up, and Reed was hanging on by a thread.
Nothing against Reed, but if Berry doesn’t go down, we walk out of there with a thorough ass beating of the Irish. I hope Berry recovers soon.

Comment by Black Hollywood 11.15.09 @ 12:25 am

Portland…where we had a dozen folks…all cheering for PITT…worried near the end, but glad to see a W at the end. And yes, it was a fumble, and as soon as it happened I was begging for it ot be called…I did think ND would get their TimeOut back, when they went to the replay.

Just a great game…and I’m sure Oakland is hopping tonight!

Hail to PITT!

Also, not to nit pick, but why the hell was Cruz in on that one important 3rd down that he missed the pass? Were Byham and/or Dickerson even in on that play? The last half of the 4th quarter was like the twilight zone. I already booked my flight for December 5th.

Comment by Howard 11.15.09 @ 12:49 am

I totally agree with dan 72. There is no excuse for wanny and or stull not calling a timeout on that 3rd down play with about 3 mins left. I think Pitt broke the huddle with like 6 sec. on the playclock, with 2 timeouts and the lead there was no need to rush the snap. Can you imagine what would have happened if ND recovered and went on to win the game. The fact that Pitt can now overcome the head coaches occasional brain farts now says alot about this team.
As for the 3 man pass rush they were all over the golden boy QB on that last series, those Def lineman did’nt give the shacky secondary a say in the outcome and manhandled ND’s front. Romeus was a BEAST. With all due respect to the back yard brawl the next best thing to beating PSU is beating The golden domers.

Comment by mazz6668 11.15.09 @ 12:56 am

Just heard on the post game show that in Coach charlies first press conference as ND coach he proclaimed “we will no longer loose to the Pitts and Purdues of the world”

Is Dion Lewis still running…or Jonathan Baldwin going up for a great grab…or Greg hitting Clausen while being held….still luving this game!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 11.15.09 @ 1:12 am

Although the play call was late, Stull made a bad decision in rushing te snap instead of calling a TO …. booo! Otherwise, he played very well in a pressure situation. He may have missed a few passes but no big mistakes, had a few drops and should have had another TD with a really good touch pass that O Turner should have pulled in instead of juggling it.

Comment by wbb 11.15.09 @ 1:14 am

I sat with the domers in the upper deck. Boy was it fun when we were creaming them. Then when the golden boy got them back in the game (bad idea to punt to him then)to see them have to suffer again at the end was great. Almost worth the chest pains. The big plays were amazing, the interceptions, the runs, the catches, we have big time players and we are for real.

Stull was not sharp early but the td pass to Baldwin was incredible. the bad snap and the fumbled snap were costly.

We looked like a vastly superior team and should have stomped them, but it was a satisfying win none the less.

We need to eliminate the lapses to beat Cincy and WVU.

It looked like a lot of the students left early, not sure what that was about. It sounded loud from the visitors side. Way to go Pitt fans.

HAIL TO PITT!

I am appalled by the way ESPN commentators seem to cowtow to ND and did very little focusing on the win by Pitt. It was our home turf in Prime Time and we were winning…half time Big Charlie was interviewed (no Stache) and after the game he was again interviewed (no Stache)…if it weren’t for Mark May, we would get very little “lovin’ from the ESPN crowd. It was a joy to see Dr. Lou wearing a Pitt hat & shirt after losing his bet with Mark. Continue success for Pitt, Stull, Lewis & the rest of the guys……

Comment by The Bear 11.15.09 @ 9:03 am

stull’s parents are a joke

Comment by hotsauce 11.15.09 @ 10:10 am

They can interview ND coaches and players, try to embarass Pitt with suprise spots of Stull’s parents etc etc. We won the game! Beat tnem senseless actually. That is all that counts.

Nuf said! What a wonderful Sunday morning! A joy to be a Pitt Alum and Fan. Out of scotch so the Steelers better play well.

Comment by Dan 72 11.15.09 @ 10:22 am

Great win for the Panthers! Finally, playing with the big, big lights on, we prevail. I think this game should go a long way in Wanny’s recruiting trails. He already talked about it in the PG this morning. As far as the prevent D is concerned. I didnt have a problem with rushing 3 (they still got some pressure), but with dropping 8 , you would think we should have a little tighter coverage on the 15 yard down and outs. Way too much cushion with all the safety help they had behind them. Lewis & Graham had some incredible runs and with that we have to mention the play of the O line. Great job!

Comment by Z-boy 11.15.09 @ 11:06 am

The mood around here has changed since the week we lost Diffenbach and Ricketts.

After the game I thought I saw two guys in orange sports coats on the sidelines by Stache. Were they bowl reps? Orange or Gator maybe?

Comment by CalvinHobbes 11.15.09 @ 1:01 pm

Great win and a great gameday atmosphere. I had a hard time hearing the band because the crowd was so loud at times.

Comment by Stull to Baldwin 11.15.09 @ 1:28 pm

Orange bowl .. but gator bowl and several other bowls reps were there .. they came out on the field and was introduced to the crowd during a timeout which I thought was king of odd

Comment by wbb 11.15.09 @ 1:34 pm

I just watched my DVR. The game was even better on TV. Big plays by big time players. I agree, too bad about the ND apologists. To comment that there was bad tackling on the Graham run was cheap. There were a lot of ND jockstraps left on the field all night long.

Comment by gc 11.15.09 @ 1:40 pm

Wooooooo!!! Sorry to leave you guys in the live chat last night so suddenly, but I had to go fight a fire, missed most of the game 🙁

Comment by dugdog 11.15.09 @ 5:43 pm

I was going to say how much teams can learn from losses. They learn even more from “near death experiences” like last night.
1. Wanny and Stull will learn to stay in the game and call TO’s at the apprapo moments:
A. 4th and 1 and Pitt is utterly confused on D as ND goes for it.
B. 3rd and 1 with time runnnng down 4th Q and Stull tries to get off a quick snap…fumble…a ND recovery could have cost us the game.
C. 4th Q with 9 minutes to go…again Pitt has the ball 4-3-2 and Stull snaps the ball and almost throws a pick.

Last but not least, Holley will never again get fooled on the 4th and 1 and take that step forward which let ND get there 1st long gain.

All these “lessons” will be very important against the Hoopies and Cinncy.

Hail to Pitt.

Comment by CalvinHobbes 11.15.09 @ 1:01 pm

Most of the bowl reps were there last night (yeah Sun Bowl too). They must travel around together.

Regarding the Stull’s not sitting in their seats, I assumed they moved to the club seats since I haven’t seen them all year. Some fans were absolutely brutal on them last year, noot just booing, but lots of name calling. It would be difficult to hear your family member constantly criticized. I think if it is going to happen though it will happen in the SRO area too. They had lots of support in their seating area too. Probably more than anywhere else.

Go Pitt

Comment by wldrnss 11.15.09 @ 7:48 pm

Being a bowl rep must be an awesome job. I heard those guys make a lot of cash to basically do next to nothing.

Of course, that’s probably the reason that college football will never have a playoff too. There’s too many people making too much money off of the bowls.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 11.15.09 @ 8:06 pm

And if anyone cares, we stayed at 8th in the AP and at 9th in the coaches poll, and jumped up to 9th in the BCS standings.

So we are officially a full-fledged top 10 team.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 11.15.09 @ 8:13 pm

just watched the end of the game on ESPNU ad the final shot was Dave talking to EJ and seemed pretty pissed .. my guess is because Lisa Salters interviewed Weis after the game and ignored him.

Comment by wbb 11.15.09 @ 10:51 pm

I was pretty disappointed with the cold shoulder given to the winning coach. I understand the storyline with Weis, but come on.

HTscriptP

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 11.16.09 @ 1:54 am

Every story line throughout the game was about Weis, other than Stull’s parents. Weis was interviewed 3 times, The Stache, none.

Comment by dugdog 11.16.09 @ 5:25 am

As long as the storyline was how ND lost again and how mr perfect former patriots coach is going to get canned, anyone can talk bout ND all they want for what I care!

Let them talk about Pitt when we beat Alabama or Boise State in the BCS.

Comment by Greg 11.16.09 @ 8:48 am

It’s all about who you are – not what you do. W Va looses to Cincy by 3 points and drops out of the top 25…PSU squeeks by a weak Indiana team and jump up 5 slots. Would love to see Pitt run the table including a bowl win.

Comment by mark 11.16.09 @ 9:26 am

Gator Bowl rep came up to me and asked if I’d take the trip to Jacksonville. I told him definitely…even if PSU wasn’t our opponent.

Kudos to Pitt students at the game. 12th man, 13th man, hell….gazillion man.

HAIL TO PITT!
