A Nice Surprise

Getting J.J. Moore was just that. The 3- or 4-star small forward was unexpected. A kid scoring a 93 (Insider subs) by ESPN.com/Scouts, Inc (that score is listed as “high-major minus“).

I didn’t see that coming. I assumed he was a lock for Louisville, and he was just creating some intrigue before signing day. But according to Chris Dokish, Pitt went all-out on getting him.

First of all, the job the entire Pitt staff did to get J.J. Moore was very impressive. And I do mean the entire staff. Despite Moore almost certainly heading to Louisville, Jamie Dixon, Tom Herrion, and Brandin Knight all put on an all out assault to get the 6’6″ small forward. According to one source with knowledge of the situation, “it was as complete an effort” as they’ve ever seen to recruit a player.

And while there are have long been concerns as to whether Moore can get eligible for the 2010 year, Dokish reports the belief and even expectation that Moore will get his eligibility set.

That and the signing of Cameron Wright todayand Isiah Epps puts Pitt at 1 over their scholarship limit at this point. Speculation as to how that is resolved (transfer, academic casualties, someone giving up a scholarship) is something for another day.

While it doesn’t rule out a commitment from Maurice Walker — the sleeper center — it does make it appear unlikely regardless of need. Especially since he seems to be getting more attention and it seems unlikely Pitt will go 2 over the limit in the early signing period.

Just another great class for the b-ball team.

While I love that Pitt got their man and a little upset that JJ Moore will now overshadow my Trees Hall exploits and become the best Long Island baller at Pitt this decade I’m not sure I understand the need for another 6’6″ swing man. If Moore joins the team next year that gives us Patterson, Wanamaker, Brown and Robinson at the 3. Seems like a big guy would have been a better fit.

For got about Cam Wright who also signed today, same kind of wing player as Moore.

Comment by Pablo 11.11.09 @ 9:43 pm

Pablo, it sounds like Moore is a lot better prospect than the other SFs. We’re talking about a kid who had offers from Louisville, Florida, and Oklahoma. And if Moore doesn’t make it to 2011, Wanamaker and Brown will be gone.

this is exactly the kind of player pitt needs to stock up on. We need to ween ourselves off of the 6 foot point guards and roll some larger guards at the top 3 positions. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HAVING A 6ft 6in PG (although i know that none of these guys projects as a pg). We have enough big men on the roster currently. These guards will do quiet nicely.

Perhaps a sign that we’ve seen the last of G. Brown in a Pitt uniform.

Milo, I have no inside knowledge about this, but just pure speculation … I am wondering about the coaches’ feelings on G Brown. Sure, they won’t admit it publicly, but Brown’s academic suspension in a time when they need all the experience they can get, has to really be a negative in their eyes. Combine this with the fact that he appeared to be the only player on the team last year that didn’t appear to improve … in fact, his shooting got progressively worse, maybe a sign of poor work ethic (again just speculation.)

Of course, he did play well defensively last year, which is very important to the staff … so who knows?

why would this effect gil brown. Hes only a jr and we isnt going anywhere?

Comment by mike 11.12.09 @ 8:52 am

My guess is he’s been shown the door. Rumor only no insider knowledge but I heard he hasn’t been seeing eye to eye with the coaches on a number of things. See if you can find any mention of him in the media guide for this year.

Comment by Section 110 11.12.09 @ 9:26 am

jonnyrocket,

We have enough big men on the roster already? Mcgee (stiff), Zanna (raw) and Taylor (more comfortable at PF) is enough big men?

I’m sure the coaching staff knows somthing I don’t and Jamie Dixon certainly doesn’t diserve me second guessing him but taking a broad view of the roster it seems like a big man is a much more pressing need than annother SF.

And Marco, Gil Brown, Nasir Robinson and Lamar Patterson were more hyped than JJ Morre.

Comment by pablo 11.12.09 @ 9:48 am

Yeah, I would not be surprised if Brown is the odd man out. He’s frankly been a disappointment on the court, and now he can’t get his stuff together off it.

Comment by Ben 11.12.09 @ 9:49 am

Gilbert Brown is officially off the team (hence no media guide), and is not enrolled in school. But he has every intention of rejoining in December and all signs point to it.

Now whether he will be asked back in the offseason I don’t know, but for now the coaching staff expects him back.

Comment by Jamie H 11.12.09 @ 9:51 am

I just heard Jamie interviewed on the radio yesterday (94.5)and Jamie said he expected both Gilbert Brown and Jermaine Dixon to be in uniform in January, and that the lineup we see now will not be the same as the one we will see once Big East play begins. That doesn’t sound like he’s given up on Gilbert Brown.

Comment by apostles03 11.12.09 @ 11:15 am

I expect G Brown will be back but on a very short leash (politically incorrect reference these days but I know of no better way of stating it.) I do believe he will be on trial this season or he will be the one who is shown the door.

Comment by wbb 11.12.09 @ 11:30 am

pablo you forgot about JJ Richardson and Dwight Miller, both of whom are very talented but need some development.

Comment by Omar 11.12.09 @ 1:01 pm

Gill Brown, if he returned for the 2010-2011 season would be a 5th year senior, I believe. If that’s correct and he could get his academics in order this winter, spring and next summer he might be able to graduate in August. If that happens, he would not need to return in 2010-2011 unless the coaches really felt they needed him.

Comment by pitt1972 11.12.09 @ 2:00 pm

omar,

Miller and Richardson are 6’8″ and 6’7″ respectively and lack the DeJuan Blar wingspan/bulk/all-around awesomeness to play the 5.

I’m talking centers not power forwards. If given the choice between Moore and Walker (both of whom are similarly rated) on the surface it looks like Walker would be a better fit. This coming from a guy who grew up 20 minutes from where Moore grew up and is happy as hell to have a local kid on Pitt.

Hopefully Dixon and Co. know somthing I don’t know because it seems like we were already set on swingmen. Can’t say the same at center.

Pablo-while I agree we could use another center, but you are falling into the rankings trap with Moore. JJ is extremely underrated, because he just developed a perimeter game this year after being a tough, undersized 4/5. He has quickly developed into a legit, deep shooting 3, while displaying work ethic and physical skills similar to Sam Young, but at a much younger age.

JJ Moore will likely jump up into the top 50 in 2010, but even if he does not, a number of smart basketball people feel he has a chance to be one of the best players ever at Pitt.

While I like M. Walker, he does not have anywhere near the upside that JJ Moore does. One would likely be a good, serviceable player by his junior year (he needs 2 years of strength and conditioning to have a shot at reaching his potential), the other could be an all-time Pitt great, and leave early for the NBA.

Comment by CougarClaws 11.13.09 @ 7:35 am

I hope your right Mr. Claws

Comment by pablo 11.13.09 @ 10:13 am

Personally I think that Moore is going to be a premiere college bb player and is destined for the NBA. That is the reason the staff put the “full court press” for him.

I feel that we are talking about a player who will be on of the best in the nation. This kid has that talent, athleticism, work ethic and desire. I believe he will better than Sam and that is saying a lot.

As for Walker, if we get him we get him. He is in need of S & C for sure. It would be great for the team to get more players like Taylor, Woodall, and Patterson, ones who can come in and be able to contribute some their frosh/redshirt frosh years.

As for Brown they do need him this year because they lost so much but having said that I would not be disappointed if he is gone before next year
