Did What Needed To Be Done

Not going to dwell too long on this game. Pitt did what they were supposed to against Syracuse.

They started out a little sluggish. Looking very much like a team that had a bye week and had to regain their rhythm. They did, and buried the Orange. Taking them apart on offense by ground and air. Another “top-ranked” run defense beaten apart as Dion Lewis went over 100 yards rushing once more (needing only 18 carries for 110 yards).

On defense, after the initial 71 yard drive that accounted for 1/4 of the Orange total offense, the defense shut it down. Other than allowing the first 100 yard rusher this year, they didn’t have a hard day.

So, it is now time to focus on beating Notre Dame.

“Give credit to Redskins linebacker H.B. Blades. To help his team, he came back two weeks after arthroscopic knee surgery. He made several plays on special teams and on defense in a loss to the Falcons.”

…also, Clint Session led the league in tackles today with 14..It seems Pitt has been producing as many, if not more, solid linebackers lately as State Penn has been

I think Clint had a pick today too.

A tasty weekend for Pitt fans all around.

Football:
– After a sloppy first half, Pitt’s offense looked like it regained its USF-game look and took Syracuse to the mat. Plus, the defense kept Paulus and company out of the endzone until it was “Tino Time” late in the game. A solid effort.
– I’m still pretty excited about this ND game, even though ND shit the bed against Navy at home. What drives me absolutely nuts is that even if Pitt beats ND, they are still eligible to takes Pitt’s spot in the Gator Bowl, should Pitt lose to Cincy. College football drives me absolutely crazy.

Hoops:
– See, this is what you’re SUPPOSED TO DO against D-II teams. The Coker College Cobras weren’t just a D-II team, they were a VERY BAD D-II team. But that being said, the Panthers took care of business, getting solid efforts from Taylor and Woodell. Travon is looking more comfortable out there and more and more like the PG we thought he could be, which excites the hell out of me.
– The freshmen look confused when doing anything besides straight man-to-man defense, particularly when setting screens and running zone defense. I suppose this is normal. This team is in desperate need of veteran leadership, but instead are being thrown in to a sink-or-swim scenario. They should emerge as better players because of it, but there are clearly going to be some very ugly growing pains.
– I can’t remember if Wannamaker turned the ball over a lot yesterday, but when he did, it sure was ugly – and that is what sticks out in my mind. At one point, a C.C. player just took the ball right out of his hands. This is going to be the weakest competition of the season. He needs to step it up.
– Not sure who is going to redshirt of this group since depth is an issue for this team until Jermaine and Gilbert get back, but I think Zanna and Richardson are definite candidates. Zanna is probably the most unpolished of the bunch, while Richardson plays very hard, but fouls every 33 seconds or so. Both need to work on the mental aspect of their game. Lamar Patterson probably should redshirt, but I am not sure the depth at the 3 position is what it should be so he might be expected to be ready to go.

Should be another solid weekend with the basketball team raising a banner Friday and the football team playing Notre Dame the next night. My liver hurts already.

Regardless of PITT’s outcome the next 2 weeks, winner of Cincy PITT takes the Big East crown. (unless Cincy loses back 2 back) Extremely excited for this game. It is a shame they burned Dorin’s redshirt his freshmen year for that one rushing TD. He would be a great addition to next years roster.

The one thing that makes me nervous about Cincy is there new QB seems to be picking secondary’s apart. Our cornerback play is not our strong point. But UCONN put a lot of points up on them which means Stull could have a big day.

Cincy was very vulnerable to the “power rush” from UCOnn which means we should be able to score.

And isn’t there a Gator Bowl clause where Notre Dame can’t take a Big East spot if there are certain conditions, like differential in number of wins? Anyone know that? So like an 11-1 Cincy team or a 10-2 Pitt team wouldn’t be shut out if ND finished 8-4?

Looks like No Gameday crew….appears they are going to TCU /UTAH game…blame ND.

Nice to see that Clint Session is really contributing at the next level. I’ll be honest, I was really surprised that he got drafted because I kind of got the impression that he may have peaked as an underclassman at Pitt…I never got the sense that he got significantly better from year to year at Pitt and actually may have regressed a little (still see the visions of him trying to spy Pat White during one of those WVU games).

The success of so many of these guys at the NFL level can only help recruiting for the future, too. I’d be willing to bet that Wannstedt and the coaching staff is using this track record as a strong selling point.

The majority of guys in the NFL are Walt Harris recruits, some of which had a few years under Wanny. But good for Wanny if he can use it as a selling point. We have been 10x more successful at getting players in the league as PSU

Kev-I think there is an NCAA rule regarding bowls that a bowl cannot select a team that is more than 2 games worse (in terms of overall record) than another team that is eligible for that bowl game. That would mean that the Gator Bowl could take an 8-4 Notre Dame team over a 10-2 Pitt/Cincy, but could not take an 8-4 Notre Dame over an 11-1 Cincy, or a 7-5 Notre Dame over a 10-2 Pitt.

I’m going on memory here – can anyone confirm this rule?

Comment by Pantherman13 11.09.09 @ 11:05 am

If we win out, Cincy would get the Gator Bowl spot. They’d have a hard time explaining how a 8-4 or 7-5 ND team got the spot instead of an exciting 11-1 team.

However, if we win the next two, but lose to Cincy, we’d need ND to lose an additional game so we’d be 10-2 and they’d be 7-5 for us to try and get in there.

And sadly, an 8-4 ND team would almost definitely get in over a 10-2 Pitt team.

But hey, that should be motivation for Pitt to kick some ass Saturday night. Do it for the Big East!

I believe Pantherman is correct. As I understand the ND/BE bowl tie-in, Notre Dame can take the Gator Bowl slot ONLY IF ND is within 2 loses of the top BE team still available. So, assuming ND wins out after the Pitt game: if Pitt beats ND, beats WVU and loses to Cincy, Pitt will be 10-2 and will likely lose the Gator Bowl to an 8-4 ND. If Pitt wins out (including Cincy), Pitt goes to the BCS, Cincy goes to the Gator Bowl and ND is up shit creak.

Comment by Bryan 11.09.09 @ 11:55 am

It is so sad that most of the selection process into where bowl eligible teams are placed comes down to $$. But hopefully Bryan’s aforementioned scenario plays out. Particularly the one where we win BE and Cincy only loses to us and gets the Gator Bowl. Can’t wait to be at the game this weekend.
