Open Thread: Syracuse-Pitt

I know we hate noon starts. The only one that seems to like them is my wife, because it means I don’t stay overnight, and I get back in time to help put the kids to bed.

Here’s how to have less of them. Win. Win more and the games get bumped to 3:30 and even a couple primetime slots. We are seeing that with the final month as the ND game goes all the way to a national showing at night. Keep winning and you can bet that the season finale with Cinci will be at worst a 3:30 start and perhaps another 7:30 or 8pm primetime event.

The game thread is open and I’ll be live-tweeting for most of the game.

Game is on ESPNU, channel 793 in NYC.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 11.07.09 @ 11:30 am

I’m ready to rock. Obviously this is a game we can’t lose. It would be a disaster to have a setback today.

Comment by Panthoor 11.07.09 @ 11:49 am

anyone know of any internet links to watch the game…or listen

Comment by PeteUnit 11.07.09 @ 11:55 am

Dumbass.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 11.07.09 @ 12:10 pm

Nice long drive after the mistake. Good mix of plays. Love the comment of Hynoski- “He’s a baby rhino in the backfield.’

Comment by williamsburg pitt fan 11.07.09 @ 12:33 pm

Why is Smith still back there? He had a good 15 yards if he ran that. Surely someone on this team has some balls to not fair catch everything.

Comment by Panthoor 11.07.09 @ 12:54 pm

Pitt special teams act like they have Never played football before. We are ice cold and need to settle down before this Orange team thinks they have a chance.

Comment by Dan 72 11.07.09 @ 1:00 pm

We needed that INT. I would have gone for 2 though.

Comment by Panthoor 11.07.09 @ 1:08 pm

Dat ma nigga g-reg wit dat pick!

Comment by Clint Session 11.07.09 @ 1:11 pm

Was everyone out drinking last night? Certainly checked their brains in the locker room…cmon..settle the F down!

Comment by Dan 72 11.07.09 @ 1:16 pm

Was Wanny with theM? 9 seconds and you have time to go for third and 5??
wtf?

Comment by Dan 72 11.07.09 @ 1:19 pm

How did Balwin let that ball right through his hands? That was a sure 6.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 11.07.09 @ 1:22 pm

A couple of mistakes has kept Syracuse in the game. Our defense has been beat on a couple of plays but have made up for it by being tough up front. If our D continues to play like this and we score on our first second half possession then we could demoralize the Orange early.

Comment by Panthoor 11.07.09 @ 1:27 pm

I love watching our offense this year 🙂

Comment by Panthoor 11.07.09 @ 2:07 pm

Need to get Deon over 100 yrds. He’s due to blow one open here.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 11.07.09 @ 2:28 pm

Greg Paulus about to be on the losing end to Pitt in two sports.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 11.07.09 @ 2:42 pm

We took care of business today. Next week we find out if this is a top 10 team or a top 20 team.

Comment by Panthoor 11.07.09 @ 2:50 pm

There is no team/franchise in sports I hate more than ND. I can’t wait for next week….Now, time to grab a taco or two….HTP.

Comment by SilverPanther in NYC 11.07.09 @ 2:53 pm

Great second half…

Hail to PITT!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 11.07.09 @ 2:54 pm

That’s what a good team does, administers a severe ass beating to a bad team.

The refs sure did try their best to let ‘cuse cover on that last td drive though!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 11.07.09 @ 3:39 pm

Yeah, Jimbo, that was ridiculous. 3 out of those 4 PI calls WERE NOT PI!!! Dobbs with the correct score call, woot! 1st half we looked as rusty as 80 year old water mains, 2nd half we asserted ourselves well.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by dugdog 11.07.09 @ 4:46 pm

Great game to propel Pitt into the final stretch. Next up, Notoriety Dame.

I still can’t wrap my head around how NCAA granted Paulus gets a 5th year of eligibility.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 11.07.09 @ 5:30 pm

Notoriety Dame just lost to the Midshipmen! Ah…hahahahaha!

Comment by dugdog 11.07.09 @ 6:14 pm

Chas, on Facebook I predicted the score as Pitt 42, Navy 10 two hours before kickoff. I’m just sayin’…..

Comment by Bobby 11.07.09 @ 6:24 pm

Call my crazy. But I think we are going to absolutely pound the crap out of Notre Dame. I’m talking blowout here. CAN’T WAIT!!!!

Comment by Bobby 11.07.09 @ 6:26 pm

ANd we are seeing how bad Penn State (and the big ten) really is. That’s what happens when you pla a soft schedule! If the Big East played more B-10, B-12 and ACC teams, the nation would see how good a football conference they are!

Comment by markinNJ 11.07.09 @ 6:35 pm

At the rate today an tonight is going, Pitt may very well be in the Top 10 by tomorrow night.

Comment by dugdog 11.07.09 @ 6:37 pm

no gameday at Pitt with the ND loss…but I am not going to lie…I love to watch ND lose, gameday or no gameday. Also…if we beat ND, we are in a great position to get a BE team in the Gator Bowl.

Comment by quaziemoto3 11.07.09 @ 6:40 pm

Whelp, there goes the possibility of a Pitt vs Penn St bowl game. Ah… hahahahahahaha!

Comment by dugdog 11.07.09 @ 6:50 pm

ND pretty much f’d us today. At least they lost to a team we beat. We needed at top 25 victory. Hopefully WVU will get in before we crush them.

Comment by Jon C 11.07.09 @ 6:51 pm

I love to see State Penn lose, but I was reminded of the ole alien v predator ‘no matter who wins, we all lose’ mantra when they matched up. Both those teams are so pitiful and the entire conference has worn itself so thin.

It does suck that Notoriety Dame won’t be top 25 when we meet up, but it is always nice to see the Kool-Aid man and King Clausen lose.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 11.07.09 @ 7:28 pm

Almost a perfect day. Pitt wins ND and PSU lose. Both teams are frauds with delusional fans.

Comment by PantherChris 11.07.09 @ 7:30 pm

OT: I found this “What are They Doing Now” column to be quite interesting. BTW, does anyone know what Carl Krauser is doing?

Comment by BigGuy 11.07.09 @ 8:44 pm

So does Pitt now crack the top 10?

I think we have a legitimate chance with Iowa, Oregon, State Penn, LSU all losing and since Houston doesn’t play anyone we should leap frog them…finally we definitely should be ranked above any 2 win team aka USC and Ohio State. So Pitt might possibly be ranked as high as number 8 but probably more likely 10th in the County!

Comment by Marc 11.07.09 @ 9:41 pm

Anchors Aweigh ! anytime ND loses, it is a victory for Pitt. We have no excuse for not wiping the floor with this fraud of a team.
Neither Cinncy or ND can stop the run….WVU playes Devine and Scott hurt….shaping up nicely. I think Pitt will be ranked #9 tomorrow at 3PM.. Hail to Pitt…

Comment by Dan 72 11.07.09 @ 11:52 pm

i agree that the big ten stinks!! BUT i am going to call a spade a spade, who have WE beat?? We have ZERO wins against top 25 and a bad loss to NC State……well????

Comment by foge 11.08.09 @ 7:03 am

Pitt #8 in the AP, #9 in coaches poll

Comment by quaziemoto3 11.08.09 @ 1:13 pm

Well I didn’t see us in the top 10 this season. Feels good but we have a lot of work to do and that makes this season even better. If we win out, a top 5 ranking could be possible and that’s just insane. Before I even think about it further I will tell my brain to focus on ND. I hope Wanny has his kids focused on just ND right now.

Comment by Panthoor 11.08.09 @ 2:29 pm

Two Big East teams in the Top 10 in both polls. We’ll see what happens when the only one that matters (BCS) comes out. But for our sake, it really only matters if there’s a 3-way tie atop the Big East.

WVU is back in both polls, curiously one spot ahead of USF, who beat them…

I’m pretty sure that West Virginia’s not good this year, but I don’t have a vote in these things.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 11.08.09 @ 2:54 pm

I thought we would have to wait until after we beat ND before we cracked the top 10. Now we have to beat them to stay in. Now we see if we can finish. I still could not root for the Irish, even though it would be better for us if they won.
Whoever did the schedule is amazing. If either Pitt, Cincy or WVU sweeps they win outright. Pretty good way to keep things interesting.
Does anyone have the scoop on Shayne Hale? I thought he would be producing by now? Hail to PITT!

Comment by gc 11.08.09 @ 3:46 pm

GC, word is Shayne is still not 100% back from his injury. That’s a really tough one to overcome.

Comment by dugdog 11.08.09 @ 4:07 pm

Thanks Dugdog,

I thought that might be the case.

Comment by gc 11.08.09 @ 4:30 pm

GC,

Hale saw some time at DE during those last couple of defensive series.

Comment by Stoosh 11.08.09 @ 4:36 pm

We’re only 12th in the BCS, which is the one that actually counts for something.

The coaches and harris both had us at 9, but the computers had us at 13.

That was a bit of a dissappointment.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's My Dad 11.08.09 @ 4:50 pm

I’m not one to be big on the polls, I largely ignore them, but can someone please explain to me how LSU moved up in the BCS poll after LOSING!?!?!

Comment by dugdog 11.08.09 @ 4:51 pm

Polls don’t matter, wins and losses matter, and winning The BE is ALL that matters.

Comment by dugdog 11.08.09 @ 4:53 pm

Who has the story on the Coker game?

Comment by BigGuy 11.08.09 @ 6:34 pm

PLEASE beat Notoriety Dame. I just could not live with that smug son of a bitch Weiss having a ‘signature’ win against Pitt at Pitt.

WVU should be awesome as always. Tough backyard brawl.

Cinci…We all laughed with the inception of the half-assed river boat accelerator trophy, but maybe last year and this year could propel the ‘rivalry’. I use that term lightly, because State Penn also has a ‘rivalry’ with MSU, which we all know is ridiculous.

HTscriptP

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 11.08.09 @ 6:52 pm

Can we please start calling hynoski:
the “HYNOCEROS”
My friends and I have been calling him that since he got to Pitt and we have tried spreading it around, emailing sports writers, call-in-shows, etc.
It’s too perfect a name to not use and the announcers got close to it Saturday when they called him a baby rhino.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 11.08.09 @ 7:28 pm

Yesterday’s talk of College Game Day in town for the ND game appears to have been premature. Per the ESPN website, College Game Day will be in Fort Worth for TCU/Utah.

Comment by dock71 11.08.09 @ 7:34 pm

Pitt an early 6.5 point favorite over ND.
Anyone remember the last time Pitt was favored by 6.5 over ND? Wanny’s first game as a Pitt coach.
We owe the not so Irish a good bit of payback for that game. Wow #9/#9/#12 who’d have ever thunk it!

Comment by Dan 72 11.08.09 @ 7:40 pm

Saw the Coker game this afternoon. Not a pretty thing to watch from a finesse point of view but a lot of young guys got a lot of minutes. Coker had something like 6 points at the half. Don’t know if our defense was that good but Coker’s shooting was that bad.
Nassir Robinson left early with an apparent dislocated finger but there was no official report. Chase Adams appears to be quite capable of running the offense. Should be a fun season watching this team get better game by game.

Comment by dock71 11.08.09 @ 7:46 pm

“Chase Adams appears to be quite capable of running the offense. ”

From the write-up about the game from Pitt’s atletic department, it appears that Travon Woodall is quite capable of running the offense.

Comment by BigGuy 11.08.09 @ 8:10 pm

Woodall was the most impressive player throughout the game.

Comment by OntarioLett'sGoPitt 11.08.09 @ 8:56 pm

BigGuy – I’m sure Woodall had good numbers. What’s interesting in these early games is seeing what the new faces bring to the party. Adams played with poise and confidence. A good addition to the team if only for one season.

Comment by dock71 11.08.09 @ 9:20 pm

dock, I appreciate your (and others’) first-hand comments. Obviously I didn’t see the scrimmage, but I am quite interested on how the team is shaping up. From what I’ve been reading, Gary McGhee could be a bonus. He apparently got into better condition and is playing well. Of course, I suspect (but can’t be sure) that the Big East’s big men might provide a little more competition than Coker’s College’s big men.

Dante Taylor was not mentioned in the write-up.
