Pitt-Louisville LiveBlog

It is great that the embed is working. In case it doesn’t Click Here.

Recapping the rules. It is a moderated liveblog. I approve the comments unless you are a trusted commenter. In which case I will put you through as unmoderated. Repetitive comments will not be posted. So if everyone essentially says, “oooooh, great play.” I’m not putting them all out there. If you feel like your comments aren’t getting posted, it’s probably for that reason or excessively profane language.

Whining, “why aren’t my comments getting posted,” most likely will subject you to some sort of sarcastic comment from me. Nothing personal, but like the old Tony Kornheiser radio show where if a caller got through and wasted time by starting with “how are you doing?” the caller got disconnected right away.

I’ve added feeds from some twitter accounts that might be commenting on the game, so we will see how that goes.

A continuing issue from the last liveblog is that I’m still trying to figure out a way to sell/convince the wife to let me stick a mini-fridge in the basement to spare me the arduous trips upstairs to get beer or ice. Her contention is that combining a fridge with the other basic basement amenities in place — the HD big screen, bathroom and bar — I would not emerge from the basement between September and April. Apparently, arguing that this would be a good thing has not flown.

Anyways, the liveblog will start at 8(ish).

Per Daniel Kaffee, your wife has wisdom beyond her years.

Chas, here is my ‘whine’ about Kornheiser’s method of responding to questions about his health … he, himself wasted much more time by his berating of the caller, than if he would have simply said “fine” and proceeded with the call.

I did, however, believe he had the best national sports talk show

Ice? Check. Beer? Check. Whiskey? Check. Alright , Go Pitt!

Comment by Z-boy 10.02.09 @ 7:16 pm

Put Tino in already!

Comment by tinosGodfather 10.02.09 @ 8:11 pm

@ 8:11? Tino should have been in @ 8:00.

At halftime I’m thinking we look like a so-so high school team.

Where is the tactical coaching? All Wanny does is watch plays and bitch.

If I were Jarred Holley, I’d transfer.

Comment by steve 10.02.09 @ 9:38 pm

ridiculous comments. Good solid win, slow start but finally an impressive finish. Holly played a ton, why the transfer comment? Stull looked great especially on the deepballs.

Comment by LittleRichard 10.02.09 @ 11:23 pm

Jarred Holley played the whole second half and excelled. He may be the answer for the defense.

The DBs looked together and in control the whole second half.

We’ve got some offensive weapons, some damn good athletes.

Coaching helped, give ’em credit. We exposed their defensive weaknesses and easily held them on the other side of the ball.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by steve 10.02.09 @ 11:25 pm

Steve, that may be the best comment I have seen on this blog in a long time…All that I ask of people who criticize the coaches or individual players is that if the same has a good game, then give them credit as you would blame. You have done that, so hats off to you. I think that Stull had a very good game. We just have to resolve ourselves to the fact that he will make about 3 terrible throws a game, but otherwise runs the offense very well. I think the difference on defense was Gunn. I like Mason, he is going to be one hell of a MLB next year, but right now, he is not ready to call our defense. Great to see us play a better second half than the first for once on both sides of the ball…On to hosting UCONN next saturday…LETS GO PITT!

Comment by HbgFrank 10.02.09 @ 11:36 pm

Stull 200.99 rating

Comment by pittjd 10.02.09 @ 11:46 pm

Great second half by both D ann O…Stull’s deep throws really opened the running lanes, and PITT pounded them…Romeus looked sharp in second half…

Credit to Cig for going deep to start second half…and to the entire D—they tackled well, and kept the lousiville QB in their sights.

In the second half, we played with true speed, and nobody wore down.

Hail to PITT!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.02.09 @ 11:51 pm

about the only negative about Stull is that he just doesn’t seem to throw that short out very well. But the surprises keep coming this year … he actually made 3 very good long passes for TDS – one called back for a shift penalty. Now defesnes may not pack in so tight now.

Holley is a player — I almost wouldn’t mind seeing Fields replace Gruder at OLB, but know it’s not feasible

Comment by wbb 10.02.09 @ 11:52 pm

One more comment…Hynoski’s block on Graham’s TD was stunning! Glad to see Hyno score also—he’s a bull, and plays to win!

Hail to PITT!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 10.02.09 @ 11:57 pm

Nice Win !!!! I kind of love it !!!!!

Comment by Joe Pa 10.03.09 @ 12:40 am

We did what you should do against a bad opponent: blow them out!

I noticed something though. If a team has a strictly drop back passer (like Louisville), Pitt can handle him. If they have a guy who can’t pass all that well, but can run it (like Navy), Pitt can handle him. But when they face a guy that’s equally adept at both (NC State and Buffalo) they have problems.

It’s something to keep an eye on as the season goes forward.

But this was a nice win where Pitt played an excellent 2nd half, something they haven’t done yet this season.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 10.03.09 @ 12:40 am

I was unable to watch the game earlier so I am viewing the replay(3am-5am). The day that this team finds consistency, I can start wearing my old man hat. They haven’t put it together yet but I think they will.

The defensive line looks like it might have 3, maybe 4 NFL guys. If they finish the season strong, they will be on many wish lists. The secondary hasn’t won my trust back yet.

Comment by Panthoor 10.03.09 @ 4:03 am

I too DVR’d the game and watched it after coming home – and after I sat down at the computer and read the box score of the game… which is a weird way to watch a PITT football game. Because, even though you know they won the game – you still get caught up in the belief that they could blow it at any moment.

Comment by Reed 10.03.09 @ 6:52 am

Jimbo’s Dad, you my remember that I thought an advantage for Pitt was that the UL QB wasn’t nearly as mobile as Wilson … differnt QB started but the same result. This is the reason why I am much more worried about Cincy’s Pike and WVU’s Brown than ND’s Clausen, even though I believe Clausen to be the best pure passer.

I read where Wanny had them wear the all white to contrast the blackout. Note a real big fan of the all white, but would like to see the white pants with the blue shirts.

Comment by wbb 10.03.09 @ 8:35 am

Credit to the coaching staff for rotating guys in and out all night more. The players looked much more fresh. Especially the young RB’s at the end of the game. I thought Caragein played phenomenal: caused a fumble, the pressure that led to Romeus falling on the QB who fell down, stuffing the run inside, and applying pressure the whole second half. Although he’s gonna have to work on dancing maybe this week. Question though, what happened to Mick Williams, didn’t see him in the game the whole second half (did I just miss him?). Also, seeing Saddler on crutches wasn’t encouraging.
One negative is that Jabal Sheard seems to just ignore his assignment at least 50% of the time. This was a problem at NCSt also. I stopped counting the number of times he bit inside on QB reads and boot legs allowing the guy to break outside of the pocket. He had some nice pressure down the stretch but needs to be consistent playing his responsibility, keeping his outside shoulder free, and containing the QB.

Comment by LittleRichard 10.03.09 @ 9:57 am

I think if Gunn would have played against NC St we would have won. And it looks as like Graham will now be getting a series each half, just like LaRod did last year. Surprised that Tino didn’t get in at all, looks like Stull has solidified himself. Good job by the whole team, and for once….GREAT halftime adjustments!

Comment by KeyboardKev 10.03.09 @ 10:11 am

Nice “Cigar Game” for a change. Give credit to the O-line, they have been doing a fantastic job protecting Stull and helping to create lanes that our RBs can find easily and often.

One thing I noticed last night, and throughout the year, is how good field position we have been getting this year. Credit Sadler (& Smith) for really being smart about the way they handle kick offs and punt returns. It is so refreshing to see a decent return game that HELPS the cause, not hurt it!

Also, love what Cigs did in the second half. We made some key 3rd downs that really kept the momentum on our side.

Once again, credit Billy Stull. He played with poise and actually made a great run in the first half that led to a great throw (but negated by either a penalty or a drop pass)…nonetheless, it was the first time I felt like he seized the moment and went to make the play himself. Give him credit, he played really well.

HTP!

Comment by Pauly P 10.03.09 @ 11:19 am

LittleRichard, Mick Williams was bruised last week, practiced very little and didn’t start and saw limited action. Not supposed to be serious just precautionary.

I’m glad that Cignetti used some play action last night especially on 1st down or non-passing situation — one thing I was critical of not doing vs NCS.

Comment by wbb 10.03.09 @ 11:45 am

What’s your guess as to why? We’re up 28-10 in the 4th Q. Graham had an excellent series. Harris hasn’t played, but Lewis goes back in. Also, I think that Tino could have handled the situation nicely at that point. Seems to me that there is no reward for working out all year and going to practice every day.

Comment by BigGuy 10.03.09 @ 11:51 am

off topic but may be interesting to many here … Coach Dixon was just on local radio promtoting the ‘heartfest’ (for lack of a better term) … but two interesting topics came up:

1) while Dixon was aware of his quickness, defensive skills, and ballhandling, he is very pleasantly surprised on how well Chase Adams can shoot.

2) Chris Taft is back at Pitt working on his degree. Apparently Pitt has this program where athletes who left and didn’t graduate can come back. I have mixed emotions on this … mostly I believe it to be a positive program which really is doing the right thing, and shows that the university is not just using its athletes, but on the other hand it seems to provide a buffer for athletes, such as Taft, for pulling the plug earlier than they should.

Comment by wbb 10.03.09 @ 11:53 am

“Chris Taft is back at Pitt working on his degree.”

It could only be a good thing. Good luck Chris. Prove to us that sometimes in life when we make a mistake, we may get a second chance, and we can be smarter. Hoorah for Pitt.

Comment by BigGuy 10.03.09 @ 1:01 pm

note that the kickoff for next week’s UConn game is set for 3:30 … televised locally by WTAE

Comment by wbb 10.03.09 @ 7:09 pm

don’t know if you’re watching any of the games, but instead of throwing these flags, these college referees should start shoving them up at their asses. The game is about the players, not about them.

I saw 3 ridiculous celebration penalties called today … as well as a ‘roughing a snapper’ against ND (and I hate ND). That’s 2 weeks in a row where I was introduced to a new penalty call ..to go with the ‘disconceritng signal’call against Mason last week.

Comment by wbb 10.03.09 @ 7:16 pm

Washington got screwed – the ND fullback’s knee hit the ground on their 2 point conversion at the end of regulation, it was obvious on the replay, and the ND announcers didn’t even mention it.

Go PITT!

Comment by KeyboardKev 10.03.09 @ 7:30 pm

Kev, The Irish RB’s knee did hit the ground, however, I have no sympathy for UW. When you fail to score on 10 tries from within the 2 yardline ast they did in the latter part of the game, you are probably not worthy of winning. I also thought ND scored that late TD with much too little resistance … going down the filed in a little over a minute

Comment by wbb 10.03.09 @ 10:28 pm

We are through 5 games. A couple things to keep in mind regarding our QB:
Stull leads the Big East in QB rating (120.9). Ok, tied for first with Pike. He has 11 TDs to 1 INT and is completing 66.4%.

Comment by Dan35 10.03.09 @ 11:50 pm

Whenever I want to pile on Wanny, I think about how bad Stoops must be getting crucified at Chokelahoma. All that talent over the past 5 years and nothing to show of it… What a waste.

Comment by Pauly P 10.04.09 @ 12:37 am

Wbb – Mason was imitating the QB cadence – I’ve seen it called before, and every defensive football player should know that is illegal. That’s a good call IMO.

ND penalty on the FG was because a DL “head slapped” the center right after he snapped the ball – a move that’s been illegal in both college and the NFL for decades. Another good call, and another play that the offender had to have known he couldn’t do.

Comment by Reed 10.04.09 @ 6:09 am

Dan35 – not sure where you got your Stull/Pike info – but that’s the NFL efficiency rating, which some websites use. The NCAA uses a different syatem and as of 10/3 ranks Stull #5 at 167.49 and Pike #11 at 159.95.

Reed, thanks for the update — I was aware about defensive players being penalized for trying to confuse the offense as well as ilegal head slaps by defesnive linemen … I just never heard of the terms “disconcerting signal”and “roughing the snapper”

here is the story on Taft per my previous post

while our loss at NC State was disappointing, note just a few (of many) of the unpredictability of this college fb season that happened yesterday:

1) Houston, which was 12th ranked in AP with wins over OK St and Tx Tech, gave up 58 points to UTEP .. a team that had lost at home to Buffalo

2) Virginia, which lost at home to William & Mary a few weeks ago, beat UNC at Chapel Hill giving up only 3 points

3) Russell Wilson who looked flawless last week, threw 2 picks yeaterday, the 1st in 380 pass attempts going back to last year. NCS also got a taste of their own medicine in giving up the deciding TD on a 3rd and 22 in a 30-24 loss to Wake.

There is a long way to go, and we have 5 out of our last 7 at home. If our D-line can play like they should, we can do pretty well …. but obviously, there are no guarantees.

Comment by wbb 10.04.09 @ 8:18 am

Props to the LBs and DBs as well, please. Sacks happen when receivers are well-covered.

Comment by steve 10.04.09 @ 9:19 am

Just a few observations

Way fewer comments after a Pitt win. Funny how when Pitt wins it is because the opponent stinks.

The good news:

Stull is better than most of us thought.

He has a lot of weapons, Dickerson, Baldwin, Turner (he is catching the ball), Byham (needs
to be used more)

We have two excellant running backs and a stud at fullback (like to see him with 3 to 5 carries a game)

The offensive line is starting to jell.

On defense:

Depth is good, we did not miss Mick Williams (the best Pitt player) Jarred Holley must be good, I did not notice Fields did not play in the second half.

Defensive ends finally showed up, where have they been. Question, what has happened to Lindsey and Hale? Have not heard their names lately.

Anyway lets hope these guys can continue to make big plays when they are needed. (third down)

Oh yeah, They all showed up in the second half.

Comment by gc 10.04.09 @ 9:36 am

gc, Fields was injured towards the end of the 1st half and Holley took his place. Holley IS good – quick and an excellent tackler.

That he comes from Easton has nothing to do with my accurate assessment of his skills….

Comment by steve 10.04.09 @ 9:46 am

wbb – I’m not enamored of home games as some other fans are, PITT seems to play better on the road in the DW years than at home.

Comment by Reed 10.04.09 @ 9:53 am

Steve,

Thanks for the update on Holley. I also forgot to acknowledge the play of Gunn. Mason is going to be great, but Gunn was missed in NC and made some big plays on Friday.

Comment by gc 10.04.09 @ 10:37 am

No matter how you look at the statistics, it is nice to see Stull ranked 5th in the country in quarterback rating and Lewis is 5th in rushing yards. This is off of ESPN’s website.

Comment by winedogs 10.04.09 @ 10:49 am

Reed, good point about Pitt home games — they seem to have less of a home field advantage than most teams. But I’m still worried about going to Rutgers and WVU … and glad that we play Cincy at home in December.

Comment by wbb 10.04.09 @ 10:50 am

ditto on the home games, we are never going to be the sec or big ten, but watching tennessee yesterday makes me envy the large noisy crowds. It is gettig better with crowds over 50,000 but other than the students they sure sit on their hands. We may be the best at booing our own team.

Comment by gc 10.04.09 @ 12:40 pm

Scotty McKillop with a TD today for the 49ers!

Comment by jason 10.04.09 @ 5:22 pm

yeah i can’t wait to see the mckillop highlight later

Comment by Greg in New Orleans 10.04.09 @ 6:00 pm

The home games might have been more of a home field advantage if the athletic dept. actually put emphasis on student participation than selling family packages (or have a stadium on campus but I digress)…

Something about the presentation of the game and in-game excitement seems to be lacking. Not really sure what it is though. I wish they would change the panther growl to something that does not sound like PSU.

Great win Friday night. A lot of praise should be headed Stull’s way – he is really looking like a QB that can play Wanny’s system. Whether or not he can keep up the consistency and mistake-free play is yet to be seen.
