Open Thread: Pitt-Buffalo

Might be watching the game. Might have to DVR delay. Packing and lots that have to be done. The need is to stay focused on this one game. Some seem to want to predict the season and look to the next couple in a Q&A.

Today the local stories are coach-centric. One focused on Turner Gill of Buffalo. Then there is Coach Wannstedt worrying about the game today.

Here’s a shock, Buffalo will be looking to stop the running game first. Specifically, Dion Lewis that the locals note is an Albany native to give the local hook.

So, hopefully there will be lots of positives and the offense will be little more interesting (of the good kind).

How did he have that much gas left? I thought he was down after 15 yards

Comment by JoeyD 09.12.09 @ 3:05 pm

Awesome run. Should’ve gone for 2 though…it’s too late to worry about 2 TDs and 2 FGs.

Comment by maguro 09.12.09 @ 3:06 pm

for all of you old-timers …. speaking of DION ……. I’m the type of guy who likes to run around …. I’m a wanderer, around and round and round I go!

Comment by wbb 09.12.09 @ 3:08 pm

Fields, see what you can do? Now stop acting like a fool and go with that.

Comment by Panthoor 09.12.09 @ 3:09 pm

Elijah Fields sighting!

Comment by Chris S 09.12.09 @ 3:09 pm

fields wanted that bad!

Comment by pitt it is 09.12.09 @ 3:10 pm

Ugly game, ugly as sin, but I’ll take the result.

Comment by dugdog 09.12.09 @ 3:10 pm

Dixon for President!

Comment by Yeti 09.12.09 @ 3:11 pm

Did Fields get tackled or did he slip again?

Comment by JoeyD 09.12.09 @ 3:11 pm

Tino did get in!

Comment by wbb 09.12.09 @ 3:11 pm

DiCiccio is the worst college football defensive back I have ever seen

Comment by JoeyD 09.12.09 @ 3:13 pm

i know it is in the books, but how about tackling!

Comment by pitt it is 09.12.09 @ 3:14 pm

I am going to have nightmares this week. The triple option is going to be tough to stop if we don’t tackle properly.

Comment by Panthoor 09.12.09 @ 3:14 pm

Cincy will destroy us with that bubble screen

Comment by wbb 09.12.09 @ 3:17 pm

Well over 400 yards passing against us is unacceptable. Stupid penalties and poor tackling makes no sense at this point in the careers of some of these guys. The defense did show that they can make plays but they need to find some consistency.

Comment by Panthoor 09.12.09 @ 3:21 pm

next year DeCicco will be an OLB …. Tags, Fields and Holley will be the safeties

Comment by wbb 09.12.09 @ 3:23 pm

Hey …we won ….lots to work on before Navy takes this D apart…only 1 drink…Lewis is a stud. My God did he seperate on that run.
Hail to Pitt!!

Comment by Dan 72 09.12.09 @ 3:23 pm

We gave up over 400 yards of passing to the University at Buffalo.

I repeat:

We gave up over 400 yards of passing to the University at Buffalo.

I would make every member of the secondary hitch-hike from Buffalo.

Comment by JoeyD 09.12.09 @ 3:24 pm

We must start Holley. He was instrumental in the win, absolutely denying them any chance of completing that potential TD pass in the corner of the end zone.

Comment by steve 09.12.09 @ 3:33 pm

DeCicco is weak, again, he cannot wrap up and tackle, this defense has a ton of work to do regarding stopping the pass.

No complaints regarding the offense, onto Navy!!

Comment by Dallas Panther 09.12.09 @ 3:39 pm

Jimbo Covert’s my Dad, your comment about Bill “The Screwdriver Hillgrove” was right on, Billy can hang with anyone!!!

Comment by Dallas Panther 09.12.09 @ 3:44 pm

We gave up 400 passing yards to Buffalo. I think 375 of the yards were YAC.

Comment by Jon C 09.12.09 @ 3:56 pm

Can we throw a pass over 7 yards that isnt a hail Mary? Is Stull’s arm that weak, that the coaches dont want to attempt something over 7 yards? There are about 25 guys on this team that could of played quarterback and had the day Stull had today. Im just debating on whether this is good or bad play calling. Are they being smart for not attempting some things down field or are they being way too consertative?

Comment by Z-boy 09.12.09 @ 4:58 pm

early in the 1st period, he actually threw a pass about 15yds down the middle of the field on a long turn in, completed it.. something we haven’t seen called for a while … but mostly it was the dinks and the long inomplete fades

Comment by wbb 09.12.09 @ 5:18 pm

Anybody know the PITT section for the Rutgers game?

Comment by Luke 09.12.09 @ 6:40 pm

Corner seats, both high and low.

Comment by steve 09.12.09 @ 7:10 pm

We miss McKillop more than Shady. O line played better than D line. Cignetti much better than Cav.

Comment by alcofan 09.12.09 @ 7:42 pm

Lewis was major impressive — shifty and very quick. Stull about what we expected, but made some good decisions and kept it pretty tight…but the lack of intermediate passing is concerning me. D-line would have run rampant but their QB threw on a two step drop nearly all game…can’t defend that, other than stay with the receivers and block his lanes. Good start to year but plenty to improve on.

Comment by Matt N. 09.12.09 @ 10:17 pm

Wow…Stull completes 70% of his passes, throws 3 TDs and has no interceptions, Pitt cores 54 points, and I read negative comments about the game he played? Some of you really just need to complain!

Comment by HbgFrank 09.12.09 @ 11:56 pm

Steve-do You know the exact section numbers?

Comment by Luke 09.13.09 @ 12:43 am

Secondary got owned. Who knew the offense would keep Pitt in the game? Hat off to Stull.

Comment by Cool Hand Nuke 09.13.09 @ 3:43 am

Hbg – I’ve been a critic of Stull’s play, but he did everything he was asked to do yesterday, and for the most part, did it well. The only criticism/concern I have is the lack of an intermediate passing game over the middle. Ironically, the one time they tried this (early in the game), Stull threw a nice pass for about a 20 yard pickup. I would like to see the coaches work this in more, because (a) they have the big receivers/tight ends to make it work, and (b) they are going to need this type of attack against better teams. Even in the second half, Buffalo did a good job sniffing out the screens and flair passes, basically daring Pitt to go over the middle. There are risks to going downfield/over the middle, namely, if the QB is not accurate and doesn’t throw hard, you can get picks. Although neither of those attributes are Stull’s strengths, he has shown that when he has time, he can step up and make that pass. If they can add this 4-5 times a game, it will make Lewis and all of those screen passes that much more effective. My hope is that as Stull’s confidence increases, the coaches will allow him to try a little bit more (not a lot, just a little).

Comment by Pantherman13 09.13.09 @ 9:48 am

Big question coming into this year was the offense. Have to feel good with what we have seen so far, particularly with Stull. I like the way they are using Dickerson, and Lewis is a HR threat from anywhere. I think the problems with the D are technically correctable–the overall athleticism should keep us competitive defensively. If not-we are in for a rough time with Cincy, and now WVU seems to have a balanced attack with their QB.

Comment by tph60 09.13.09 @ 10:58 am

Luke, I believe 261 and one of the 140s. The NJ Pitt Club’s package is here:
link to alumni.pitt.edu

If you went in 2007, you might remember we charged around $60 for buffet + game package. This year’s ticket prices soared 67%, thus the increase to $100 for the package.

It’s actually about break even this year, very little going to our scholarship fund.

Comment by steve 09.13.09 @ 11:10 am

I’m not going to go through all of these comments to see if anyone pointed this out, but it annoys me that people think Albany is near Buffalo. I think even the announcers said that. If I’m from Pittsburgh and I’m playing a game in Philadelphia, does that make it a “local” appearance? Learn geography.

Comment by JC 09.13.09 @ 12:13 pm

Hey JC,

We had a field day posting about the incompetance of the announcers yesterday. It was like they literally showed up 10 minute before the game, and winged it. My personal favorite was when one of the announcers classified our offense as a “Jugernaut” ; not to mention, the reference to Bill Stull’s ability to “razor slice a defense with his arm”!!!

Comment by Pauly P 09.13.09 @ 1:39 pm

How about the Ray Graham getting his last name changed to Spencer or some such?

Comment by steve 09.13.09 @ 2:02 pm

Doug Chapman made me want to end my life.

Comment by JC 09.13.09 @ 2:02 pm

261 isn’t even existent…

Comment by Luke 09.13.09 @ 6:12 pm

Steve, they called Ray Graham, Ray Sherman on a graphic at the start of the game. I’m flipping through my program not ever hearing of Mr. Sherman and wondering where he came from and how I missed his work against YSU. I believe Ray Sherman was an old Packers coach.

And my favorite from the announcers which we heard about ten times…”They just aren’t playing Buffalo football today. That isn’t Buffalo football.” Two years ago they were ranked 114th so I’m not sure what Buffalo football is supposed to be.

Comment by AJ 09.13.09 @ 6:20 pm

JC: I guess we should take the poor picture quality and announcing with a grain of salt. Ten years ago when I started following Pitt football most non-conference and many conference games were not even televised.

Comment by AJ 09.13.09 @ 6:22 pm

Whoops, 201 or 202, sorry.

Comment by steve 09.13.09 @ 6:22 pm

Taglianetti out for the season with a torn ACL and will receive a medical redshirt:

Eff!!!

Comment by dugdog 09.13.09 @ 7:16 pm

with Tags out, J Holley will probably be back up at both positions (safety) Irv Brown is also listed on 2nd team on depth chart but since he is a senior and apparently hasn’t played much, not sure if he is a viable alternative. Maybe a cb like A Reed, B Jackson or R Gary may have to be moved.

Pitt moved down to 27th in AP poll

Comment by wbb 09.13.09 @ 7:18 pm

Hopefully some recruits are watching the Cardinals 49ers game. It’s a huge example of Pitt getting guys to the NFL and a giant Pitt reunion. Fitz, Larod Stephens-Howling, Gerald Hayes, Shawntae Spencer, Scott McKillop, Andy Lee. I don’t think I’m missing anyone, but may be. Impressive.

Comment by Yinzer 09.13.09 @ 7:38 pm

Yinzer, amazingly Wissenhut took B St Pierre over T Palko although I’m sure BSP is much more expensive, and showed nothing in pre-season.

Pitt’s Russ Grimm (OL) and Teryl Austin (DB) coaches Arizona

Comment by wbb 09.13.09 @ 8:02 pm

Those of you wanting to see what Holley’s capable of, he’s probably gonna get his shot now.

Comment by dugdog 09.13.09 @ 11:46 pm

Wow,
Will take the ugly win but they better shape up! They are lucky Greg Williams had a career day, or they really could have lost that game. Offensive play calling needs work during half time. After halftime both games this season against “weaker” opponents the offense comes out and is horrible for a whole quarter. You cant win against good teams like that.
