What Do You Know? A Football Verbal

It’s been oh so long since one of these occurred that it almost seems stunning. Jeff Knox out of Maryland — though 2 years at Central Catholic and from Pittsburgh so that sort of counts as a local kid. It’s a bit confusing, but he has given a verbal to Pitt.

Knox is a solid 3-star athlete that plays safety on defense and WR on offense. He had plenty of offers including Penn State, Maryland, Michigan, Wake Forest, Illinois and others. Ultimately, he knows Pitt’s coaching staff and wanted to go home.

As for Knox, [DeMatha Coach Bill] McGregor said it was “like a dream” for the Pittsburgh native to go to his hometown school.

“He’s known the coaching staff at Pitt and I think that played a major role in where he wants to go to school,” McGregor said. “From Day One, that was his number one choice.”

That’s nice that some high-schoolers still want to play for Pitt. As Pitt hosts some summer camps in the next few weeks, there is an expecation of some more commits.

The unknown at this point is which side of the ball he will play in college. Scout.com lists him as a Safety. Rivals.com plays it safe with the general “athlete” designation. Scouts, Inc./ESPN.com considers him a better fit as a WR.

Even though he could play either side of the football, Knox is likely to end up on the offensive side of the football where his receiving talents can be maximized. He should also be a very effective special teams player.

Not sure what Knox’s preference is.

Considering the depth at WR versus S, I suspect that he might be tagged for safety. Hopefully, the coaching staff will not engage in too much shifting of the decision next year.

finally got a kid to come to pgh, last few wks have been tough. Does any one know when/if pitt is switching to Nike. i thought it was supposed to happen in June, did addidas get the contract back?

Why not choose Pittsburgh? It is (again) the “City of Champions”. Now we are on a roll. Let’s keep it up. Go Pitt. George(from Columbus)

From article on ESPN by Bruce Feldman on the softest schedules in the entire country. Coming in at number 2? You guessed it our friends in Happy Valley. Sure 100,000 fans is impressive to recruits but do they even think of who they play in front of that kind of crowd? This schedule is beyond pathetic and couldn’t be fun to play against, unless you need an ego boost I guess.
Here it is:
2. Penn State (Akron; Syracuse; Temple; E. Illinois) Quality point average: 2.5: Yes, this is the same exact rating as Ole Miss. PSU wins (or is it loses?) the tie-breaker because the Nittany Lions didn’t even schedule a road game and because Ole Miss at least is facing someone who went to a bowl game in the last three seasons. PSU has six of its first seven games at home and the closest thing to a formidable non-league opponent is Temple, which is 3-34-1 against the Lions and hasn’t knocked off Penn State since 1941. Akron also is an O.K. opponent, but still coming off a 5-7 season. It’s worth noting though that this is only the third time in 16 years since PSU arrived in the Big Ten that the Nittany Lions have scheduled an FCS opponent.

maybe Walt can draw up a great offensive plan for the Zips trip to Happy Valley … trouble is that Akron defense is not too good

Pitt needs some quality offensive linemen recruits

mike, someone about a month ago said in a comment that the switch wouldn’t become official until july 1. i cant remember what day or who it was, but they mentioned that date. also, jamie dixon confirmed the report in a meeting with the press around the same time the comment was left on this site. i know the athletes were told about it before school let out because i witnessed a conversation about their meeting with pedersen. i also saw a few athletes during finals week wearing t-shirts featuring the pitt logo with a large swoosh right under it. i expect a presser the first week of july. i hope this helps.

Knox is the type of player that certainly should be considered for trying out at different positions – a good all around athlete who can fill a need in a year or two – switch away now I say, and get the best athletes on the field as much as possible.

We’ve had some of our best successes at kids who have been recruited after playing one position, and excelled at another while at PITT. Pinkston, Malecki, G. Williams this season for example, and I anticipate Shayne Hale thriving at DE – and Kinder, Ransom, etc in the past.

Agree Reed, lets add Brandon Lindsay to that list too. I see that kid thriving at DE as well. Everyone still wants to point to Dickerson like he was a savior and got jerked around, but I still argue that some kids it takes awhile to find the right spot. He just didn’t look natural anywhere they put him until TE. Yes, I would like to see him utilized more as a threat now that he is there. But I do think this staff has done a very good job of converting kids to different positions once they have arrived.

One of the press releases said he was kicked out of Central?? We don’t need another problem child. I guess if JoPa was willing to take a chance on him with some of PSU’s recent issues, he’s must be clean now!

all the good o-line recruits from WPIAL went to PSU

Comment by MarkinNJ 06.16.09 @ 4:01 pm

Dave – if getting kicked out of a prep school is an indication of “undesirability” please don’t tell my employer of the past 31 years – I put myself in the same position as a teenager.

The kid made the best of that situation at another private school whose reputation here in MD is outstanding – academically as well as athletically – certainly on par with Central, has thrived in every way it seems, and wants to go back home and play ball… what part of that screams ‘problem child’ to you?

Comment by Reed 06.17.09 @ 4:51 am

Athletics and academics take “teamwork” and discipline. 2-3 years ago, he was removed from an environment (not that far away from campus) to keep him out of trouble. He is now coming back into the same area. Whatever temptations were there before, are most likely still there.

That said, if he has truly “cleaned up his act”, it will be a win-win for Knox and the Panthers.

Personally, I am just “fed up” at all the trouble athletes everywhere are getting into…maybe it’s just heavier media coverage, etc. It’s not just Pitt, it’s most college programs and the money hungry professional teams. It just frustrates me.
