I’ll Take Survival

I realize after a performance like that, it is hard to be optimistic. I am not even pretending to be optimistic. All I can say, is that we won. Just like Memphis survived yesterday. Like No. 1 UConn did against No. 16 Albany in 2006. At least Pitt never trailed in the second half.

It also means that there is little chance that Pitt thinks it can cruise.  There’s also this. I think back to the way Pitt blew out teams with ease the last two years then struggling and not doing as well in the second round — losing twice and needing OT to win. That’s the best I can do.

Levance Fields said this yesterday when meeting the media.

“Our goal is to survive and advance,” Fields said

In that respect Pitt did what they needed.

18, 19, 20 turnovers. Whenever the final stats come out it won’t be pretty. Lousy passing and players not coming to the ball. Not showing the energy expected or needed. It came down to Pitt’s superior talent being enough and ETSU really being a poor shooting team.

I guess, for us. Vent now. Get it out of the system. Go with the self-pity. Run with the venom and negativity. There’s a 24-hour period for this. Then just let it go.

Believe it or not, we trailed just three times in the game: 2-1, 5-3, and 15-13.

Liveblog curse.

I am puzzled about Pitt’s approach to breaking the full court press. It seems that they rarely go towards the ball to help, but instead often runs away from it causing low percentage, erratic passes. I don’t remember Jamie Dixon’s teams ever doing this before this year, and was wondering if any of you agree?

Yuck, that game was horrible. Thankfully DeJuan Blair and Ashton Gibbs showed up b/c the rest of the team didn’t. Sam played ok on the offensive end, but his defense was horrendous, not to mention his inability to box out on the defensive glass. More energy and focus will be needed if we hope to beat Ok. State.

For the record, Louisville trailed 24-22, or later in their game than we ever trailed in ours. I bet they win by 35.

They all just stood there. Maybe all the talk about fouls went to their head. That is the least physical game I have seen Pitt play in a long time. Bottom line is that they won. See you all on Sunday around 3PM.

Louisville up only 2 at the half. I hope they struggle and win but a close one. Maybe that will take some of the negative focus off Pitt and help them get their stuff together.

well, there’s our stinker game. thank god we were playing a 16 seed. we play that way vs. OSU, we’ll lose by 20. er our sti

amazed at how badly fields played today. this guy’s a senior. WTF?!

Comment by Scott 03.20.09 @ 7:33 pm

Three words: Fear of Fouls. And where was Biggs when we needed him on the boards?

Comment by steve 03.20.09 @ 8:12 pm

Agree with all especially Bill and Z Boy. Elementry school teams no how to break a press better than Pitt did today. Chinese fire drill would be to kind an expression for today’s debacle.

Agreed also on the sulker…Sam Young…he needs to get over himself. Biggs was equally atrocious and allowed ETSU to dominate the O boards by trying to get into a jumping contest instead of boxing out.

Having said all that, screamed at my wife and cat, ran a mile, drank too much scotch….

I think Jamie Dixon is too good a coach to let us lose Sunday. My spies tell me Fields is hurt bad.
Gibbs may start Sunday with Fields coming off the bench when he can….Pitt needs to bring it all Sunday. OSU will be pressing coming out of the locker room. The key is J Dixon who has to find his offense!

Sleep well all….survive and move on has taken on new meaning. Hail to friggin Pitt!!

Scott,

Fields just doesn’t look the same player he was before the injury.

I’m hoping that we just played poorly (for the 2nd game in a row BTW) and that’s it. Because if the reason we looked so bad was Fields still being hurt, we’re screwed.

Dan,

By “spies” do you mean “anybody who watched this afternoon’s game”? haha

I remember going into the season when the experts said that the key to our year was a healthy Fields. If he’s not right, we’re in trouble.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 03.20.09 @ 9:21 pm

What is strange is that Fields has had more rest and looked worse physically. He was hurt and couldn’t walk the day b4 UCONN but looked fine. Then even though he didn’t play well vs. WVU he didn’t look this bad. Today he looked slower than ever and seemed to be holding them back from running at times. He also noticably was whincing in pain at times. Hard to figure that after the week of rest he has gotten worse?

Comment by Ontario Lett's Go Pitt 03.20.09 @ 11:28 pm

Fields was noticably Whincing at times. I’m willing to bet if Pitt had dominated this game he would have been all smiles throughout. He just needes to play better and smarter a bruised tailbone is no excuse for his horrble decisions.
This whole team needs to WAKE THE F*** UP!!

I don’t follow PITT BB as closely as the rest of you fans do – watching bits and pieces of the games throughout the year – but this season I decided to watch all their tournament games.

Now I’m wondering what the big deal is. Granted PITT beat some good teams during the season but this isn’t the first time this year we’ve seen PITT play lackluster basketball. The good news is that they snapped out of it and rose to the occasion when needed during the regular season.

That said I wonder if they can do it again.

There is abundant talent on that team – but dare I say it – very little confidence. In both the last two game I saw PITT pretty much pull their heads into the shell and turtle. Blame it on not wanting to foul if you must – that’s a pretty convienent and well used excuse – but to get decimated on the offensive boards in succession in the two (arguably) biggest games of the year – when that is supposedly the team’s strong point – shows a real inherent problem at this time of the year. Out rebounded 20-9 on the offensive boards to ETSU shows more than ‘not wanting to foul’ – it shows a crack in the foundation.

Comment by Reed 03.21.09 @ 4:49 am

I agree with Reed. There is more going on than a hurt Fields, or a fear of fouling. They are getting beat to just about every loose ball, and dominated on the O boards by a horrible team. This is an issue of want. The success after of the UConn games has made the team complacent, and Jamie is not going to break them out of it by making excuses for them. They may win the next game, but I have a hard time seeing this team goint to the final four at this point.

Comment by Scott 03.21.09 @ 5:34 am

I hope Dixon just tells the team that the game yesterday was a disgrace to the University of Pittsburgh. If they played a team that knew how to shoot, they would be on a Greyhound home now.

Teams are going to press because we have no idea how to handle it. Here are helpful hints, don’t give the ball to Sam Young or Brad Wanamaker. Both have the unique ability to do a good imitation of pre-senior year Antonio Graves and dribble it off a knee or foot out of bounds.

I understand that you don’t want to be in foul trouble – but you also have to play defense. Pitt played no defense. Also, how do you get out-rebounded by East Tennessee State? Tyrell Biggs has to get more active.

My gut says that you have to start Fields since he is a senior…but granted, in about 10 minutes or whatever he played, Ashton Gibbs looked composed – and like he wanted to play.

Even if you lose money on the spread, make sure to always bet that Pitt will miss one layup and brick at least one dunk per game – you never miss the money doing that.

Comment by Joey D 03.21.09 @ 7:10 am

What worries me most is not that we got out-rebounded or played poorly against the press, but the lack of interest and emotion we showed in the last 2 games. That has to change, I don’t know where the Pitt team I watched all season is.

Start Tiesi.

What bothered me the most was the lack of effort. I remember one play – it was fast break by Jermaine Dixon and he goees up for the layup that he always makes and he missed. All around him are all of the ETSU players who followed him down the court and all the Pitt players stood back and watched. How can you play like that in the NCAA tournament!
