Recruiting and Redshirts

It’s nice that a “source” says Lance Stephenson has an interest in Pitt. I mean, if a blue-chip, 5-star, presumed 1-and-done player wants to come to Pitt it’s hard to say no.  I just don’t see it happening unless DeJuan Blair leaves after this year. There’s the lack of the scholarship to actually give him at the moment. There’s also a sense that this is just a little passing fancy thing. Pitt has made attempts to recruit him, now Pitt is #1, so there is a little reconsideration.

It’s worth watching, but I’m not going to expect anything. Hmm. Apparently that is also what Dokish is saying (and lots of other recruiting stuff).

Plus, Pitt is pursuing a top player out of Ohio. Adreian Payne is a big man, that Pitt had identified previously and now pushing harder.

Of other interest is whether Travon Woodall is going to redshirt or apply for a redshirt. Apparently they feel he’s had enough little injuries to make a case for a redshirt.

I question how good a “fit” Lance Stephenson would be. Obviously, Jamie looks beyond the physical attributes of a player when he decides to recruit the same. I’m suprised that Jamie would chase him or that Lance would want to try to adapt to Pitt’s philosophy.

I agree with Dokish when he says that you can’t have 13 elite players on the team. While it s great to have super talent, there is only one ball and players have to know their roles. I think some of the so-called analysts see all the blue-chippers on certain teams and lose sight that it is a team game. Sure, UNC and UConn has super talent that can blow any team out on most nights, but a disciplined team playing with effort can also be impactful. It likes Oklahoma in fb … they seem like the greatest team in history on most nights but when occasionally when someone punches them back, they cannot rely on team fundamentals to carry them through … witness UConn vs Gtown and UNC vs BC, both inexcusable homecourt losses.

That doesn’t mean that teams like Pitt are infallible .. it is just that the teams that win pretty leave a much bigger impression on analysts and pollsters.

I don’t want Stephenson. I’ve watched him play a few times now. He’s great and can be very intense. He’s a monster from the wing, but likes to shoot a lot on his own. He seems to fancy himself a better outside shooter than he really is. He’s definitely a Big East player though. But I don’t think a good fit within our modest ball movement system. Seems like a Louisville or even Memphis type of guy. Or he can go to St. John’s or Seton Hall and be “the man”.

On the subject of Doug Gottlieb, he was a commentator on last night’s Memphis/ Tulsa game (Great game BTW!). At one point Memphis really buckled down on defense tight and Gottlieb paid Pitt a compliment when he called the defense something like “Pittsburgh-esque”. There was also an audience text poll on who would be the last undefeated team still standing. Pitt took 50% of the vote and won. ESPN cut to some Blair and Sam highlights and Gottlieb commented that in Sam, they have a player who can bear a heavy burdon on his shoulders into the NCAAs.

If stephenson wants to come to Pitt, by all means we’ll take him…the scholarship thing could be an issue though. Now, that being said, I wouldn’t want Dixon or the staff to go chasing after him at all costs. In all likelihood he is a one and done type guy, but we’ve all seen what a one and done (i.e. derrick rose) can do for a team/program. I think Dixon will go about handling the situation with as much dignity and class as he always has.

Now I can cross my fingers that #25 is called late in the first round…

With the 28th pick, the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES take LeSean McCoy, running back, University of Pittsburgh.

A rarely mentioned perk of not going in the top 10 picks: you don’t have to play for a crappy team.

If the Eagles did get McCoy, I would be so happy. The Steelers might get a shot at him too but I wouldn’t be shocked if he ended up in Green and White…Westbrook is already 29 and they’re low on young running backs.

you think shady would be that low in the first round ?… it would be awesome if he was on the eagles….

Comment by Snala the Panther 01.14.09 @ 1:54 pm

I hope that means that the Eagles will be picking ahead of the Steelers

Cheer up boys the No 1 team has a game tonight.

Comment by alcofan 01.14.09 @ 3:12 pm

the eagles will def. be picking before the steelers regardless of the playoff outcome. The eagles have the panthers 1st round pick in this years draft.

I think it’s fun for the coaches to hear and say that Lance Stephenson has interest in Pitt because of what a big name this kid has been for years, but I highly doubt that Dixon really wants him.

I think that there are some guys who Dixon would take, even knowing they were “one and done”, but Stephenson is not one of those. He’s not a talented PG who makes everybody else better or a beast inside who keeps your team in the game on the boards. Instead, he’s a ball-hogging, scoring wing who doesn’t even shoot that well and gets most of his points because he overpowers guys from the wing on the HS level.

If you’ve seen him play, then you realize what a problem he would be on the court for Pitt. He’s one of those kids who’s been a star in NYC way too long and it’s gone to his head.

No thanks……….but it is nice that kids like him mention Pitt these days. That’s certainly reflective of where the profile of the program is.
