Open Thread: St. John’s-Pitt

Spent the time before the game shoveling out. No liveblog. Just an open thread. Observations at the half.

HALFTIME: Pitt leads 41-36.

Do the Red Storm have your attention now? Let’s give those Johnnies credit. They came out fired up and ready to take down Pitt. They want to show that they can compete with anyone — and they are.

First things, first. Jermaine Dixon came out with a shaved head. I approve. Might have done it to try and get a jump or a change. It actually seemed to help. 8 points and 3 steals in the first half. Just getting to the basket and starting to finish some shots. Still can’t hit a 3.

Sam Young just was pressing — 2-11 shooting. After dropping that opening 3, it was nothing. The worst was a sequence where Pitt got the ball on a steal, and Young ran right into traffic in the paint and put it up short. Rather than passing to anyone on the wings waiting. He started to get back into the team game, when he made the alley-oop for Gilbert Brown to slam home. I was terrified he would try and take his man to get the score himself. He got the authoritative slam before the half which might be the spark

Early in the game, Pitt just was getting looks from everywhere, but nothing falling. You could see the frustration growing. The defense was solid. Lots of turnovers forced, but St. John’s when they did shoot was being patient. Not much forcing shots or desperation as the clock wound down.

Free throw shooting. Ugh. Pitt shooting way below average — 7-15. Meanwhile St. John’s was shooting 9-11 (82%) — significantly above their average.

Sam sets the tone early.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports –

Isiah Epps, a point guard from New Jersey, gave Pitt a verbal commitment today.

Comment by winedogs 01.11.09 @ 12:14 pm

Scout.com just reported that Kolby Gray just committed.

Comment by markp 01.11.09 @ 12:15 pm

Another sluggish start. Scary.

Comment by Panthoor 01.11.09 @ 12:24 pm

Glad they committed before the game. Because we look like @^#& through the first 10 minutes. SJU shooting nearly 80 percent from the floor.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:26 pm

Wannamaker has butter fingers today…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:28 pm

I hate the way this game is being reffed.

I’m excited for both of the commitments mentioned though!

Comment by Chris 01.11.09 @ 12:28 pm

St John’s looks more athletic than we do and this TV coverage is awful…

Comment by Chris 01.11.09 @ 12:32 pm

Woohoo!!! Texas QB and a point guard!!!

Now let’s get our shit in gear and beat St. John’s.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 01.11.09 @ 12:37 pm

Sammy’s cold as ice and SJU is holding their own in the paint and on the glass.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:38 pm

They’re shooting the lights out and we just can’t get our legs under us. I’m seriously concerned about an upset.

Comment by Chris 01.11.09 @ 12:41 pm

I can’t see the game (or can I?) but it seems like maybe the guys are a little rusty here in the 1st half from the week off.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 01.11.09 @ 12:41 pm

Rusty would put it kindly. Lots of turnovers — three from Levance already. Poor shooting and SJU is getting after it inside.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:43 pm

Blair and Kennedy are playing well. It’s like the Schenley Show.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:44 pm

Blair just picked up his second. I assume Dixon will sit him for the rest of the half. Somebody needs to step up. Sammy?

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:46 pm

Let’s be that second half team that we are please.

Comment by Panthoor 01.11.09 @ 12:47 pm

…oh, and I like Ft’s.

Comment by Panthoor 01.11.09 @ 12:49 pm

Building a house with all those bricks…

Comment by pittjd 01.11.09 @ 12:49 pm

fields, besides the two threes, is playing his worst half of b-ball ever. turnovers, missed free throws, bad shots and careless play

Comment by hugh green 01.11.09 @ 12:50 pm

Pitts foul shooting could cost them. Defense will win this game either from St John or Pitt.Sam Young looks uninterested. Hard to believe

Comment by buzz1 01.11.09 @ 12:51 pm

Jeebus… 6-14 on free throws. I still don’t get how big-time DI athletes can’t hit free throws consistently.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:52 pm

At least Dixon and Blair showed up.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:53 pm

Just by looking at the ESPN stats, their shooting percentage is going down as the game progresses. Good sign, no?

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 01.11.09 @ 12:54 pm

Yes. But it’s still 10 percentage points higher than ours. They’re making their free throws and continue to push it inside. You have to like their moxy. Not backing down.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:56 pm

I will take this lead. It’s the Big East so these games aren’t easy.

Comment by Panthoor 01.11.09 @ 12:58 pm

Finished the half strong at least.

Comment by pittjd 01.11.09 @ 12:58 pm

Dunks by Brown and Young. Finally some signs of life. Keep driving to the hoop. We have them in serious foul trouble (five guys with two in the first half). I think we can ultimately wear them down.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 12:58 pm

Well, I guess there are worse things than playing a shitty first half but still having the lead.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 01.11.09 @ 12:58 pm

Pitt will be fine. They will wear this team down. Kennedy looks strong, though.

Anyone have a link to the recruiting news?

Comment by Brian 01.11.09 @ 1:00 pm

Here is the link on Colby, QB out of Texas committing link to pittsburgh.rivals.com
Here are two links about Epps committing

Kolby Gray Page

link to tinyurl.com

Looks like a solid QB, but not a superstar that will compete for the starting position as a freshman.

Isiah Epps

link to tinyurl.com

Evidently very quick and can shoot. Maybe signaling a change in pace for the Panthers in the future.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 1:07 pm

Video of Epps from what looks like AAU/All-Star Camps:

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 1:20 pm

Word on the street is that we also landed CB Jason Hendricks from NJ.

Comment by Orange Julius Page 01.11.09 @ 1:21 pm

Thanks for the links. At least Gray adds another name to the mix.

Why does SJU allow Dixon to walk right under the hoop?

Comment by Brian 01.11.09 @ 1:22 pm

Fields is not himself, but we’re still putting some distance between ourselves and SJU. Keep up the intensity and focus!

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 1:23 pm

Too bad Kennedy wanted out of Pittsburgh. Looks like he could have been a real contributor at Pitt.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 1:25 pm

Uh-oh. We’re starting to heat up. Watch out SJU.
Is there any better coach at making halftime adjustments than Dixon?

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 1:28 pm

Yo,

What’s weaker. Wearing a Steelers jersey to a Penguins game or a Pitt game?

Comment by Orange Julius Page 01.11.09 @ 1:38 pm

Nice to see Nasir getting a few minutes, though I wish we could redshirt him.

Halftime adjustments were key and I think the defense has really stepped it up in the second half.

Comment by Chris 01.11.09 @ 1:40 pm

Found the game on my cable. Apparently there’s a free Full Court preview this week.

Those of you not in Pittsburgh might want to check to see if you get it.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 01.11.09 @ 1:42 pm

My buddy who is at the Pitt game just said someone gave a checkmark to someone in the zoo that he was going to commit to Pitt. Anyone know who it was? Anybody know the list of recruits in for the game?

Comment by The O-coordinator 01.11.09 @ 1:42 pm

Blair is having another monster game. 18 points and 13 boards in 22 minutes.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 1:42 pm

Good call Jimbo. I can confirm that I’m getting the free preview here in Orlando as well.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.11.09 @ 1:46 pm

Dave sighting.

Comment by Panthoor 01.11.09 @ 1:47 pm

@ O-coordinator

Here’s the list as per Scout.

As we mentioned, QB Kolby Gray and CB Jason Hendricks are the two confirmed commits.

Comment by Orange Julius Page 01.11.09 @ 1:48 pm

Thanks, I knew about the other two, hopefully it was Mason. He seems like the only guy that the zoo would have that for.

Comment by The O-coordinator 01.11.09 @ 1:56 pm

apparently comcast doesnt recognize the free full-court week, typical comcast

Comment by Tony (Huntsville, AL) 01.11.09 @ 1:59 pm

Tony,

I have Comcast as well. It’s channel 702 for me in Tallahassee.

Comment by Orange Julius Page 01.11.09 @ 2:01 pm

Breaking News:

O-coordinator, it looks like Bernardo Nunez is the latest dude to check the list on the dry erase board.

Great win by the boys!

Comment by Orange Julius Page 01.11.09 @ 2:04 pm

yeah it says its on channel 702 but when i change it to that channel it says, “not authorized.” i order gameplan every year and the channels unlock for that

Comment by Tony (Huntsville, AL) 01.11.09 @ 2:06 pm

Nice win for us. We had to prove that we could dominate a lower BE team and we did that. Dave Wannstedt in the crowd with the leather coat made me laugh. 3 undefeated teams left and we are still one of them 🙂 .

Comment by Panthoor 01.11.09 @ 2:06 pm

Good call, Panthoor. Should be an interesting game tonight between UNC and Weak Forest. Even though I live in ACC country, I haven’t seen Clemson yet, so I don’t know if they are for real, but four of their next five come against, like, UNC, Duke, Weak Forest, and Georgia Tech, so we should find out pretty quickly.

Comment by Orange Julius Page 01.11.09 @ 2:10 pm

By my count, if the sources are correct, we have Dion Lewis, Kevin Adams, Raymond Graham, and now Hendricks and Nunez all from New Jersey. Let’s get Ike Holmes and Malcolm Bush to serve notice to Rutgers that we will continue to beat their a$$ at recruiting and hopefully on the field.

The days where Rutgers thinks that they can be relevant are over.

Comment by Orange Julius Page 01.11.09 @ 2:18 pm

If Wake beats UNC, do they jump us to #1? Interesting thing to think about…. I guess.

I caught a glimpse of the dry erase board during the 2nd half, but couldn’t make out whose names were on it. Probably should’ve rewound it with DVR but I didn’t think about it.

I did say someone, who wasn’t dressed in Pitt gear, walking through the Zoo high fiving a bunch of people. My girlfriend (as usual haha) was talking over it so I couldn’t tell who the announcers said it was, but they seemed to key in on him with the camera. Anybody know who I’m talking about?

Well, talk to everyone later, and Go Steelers (if you’re into that kind of thing).

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 01.11.09 @ 2:31 pm

I don’t think Wake will jump us with a win, but they will get votes. Worse, I think UNC has a chance to jump us with a convincing win. Thankfully, that BC loss is looking worse by the day. Just keep winning games boys! Hail to Pitt!

Comment by maz. 01.11.09 @ 3:46 pm

great day for Pitt, although Dan Mason (Penn Hills ILB) is probably the biggest get of the recruits at the game. He still may commit; signing day is in 3 weeks.

Back to BB — another example of why this team may be very special is that Young (5-15 fg) and Biggs (2 pts) had very subpar games yet others like Blair and Dixon picked it up. I can never remember a Pitt team when so many different players that can make real contributions — 7 players have the capability of scoring in double figures in a competitive game (maybe even 8 since Gibbs is their best oure shooter.)

Comment by w bill 01.11.09 @ 3:55 pm

It looked like Can Saddler

Comment by jumpingjohnnie86 01.11.09 @ 3:58 pm

Whoever it was, that man was stylin. Stylin like out Pitt Freaking Panthers. Our bench is the best I have ever seen us have, maybe by far. If Gibbs, Brown and Wanamaker continue to play like that, then the pollsters will see that we are more than a three headed monster.

Comment by Panthoor 01.11.09 @ 4:11 pm

I am really excited to see what Ashton Gibbs can do next year. His ball handling looks pretty solid, and he shoots lights out. He may not have that field general persona of Crauser, Knight, or Fields, but with a 3-point shot like that, he could add a whole new dimension to our already powerful offense.
