Louisville-Pitt Open Thread

Filed under: Football, Open Thread — Chas @ 11:16 am

Come on. Pitt has to play well at home some time. Don’t they?

Let’s see if what you people see on the TV matches what the rest of us see at Heinz Field.

Does anyone else think its comical that gameday, all of the newspapers, and websites are calling the PSU game at Iowa a major test for PSU. All I keep hearing is how strong the Iowa defense is, and how talented they are but have turned the ball over too much. This is kind of funny because before Pitt played Iowa all we heard was how bad this Iowa team was. Everyone was reporting that if Pitt wanted to be any good they needed to convincingly beat this team b/c they were an average/below average team in a not strong conference with a major coaching handicap. Interesting how the media has swung this to try and make PSU look like they play a somewhat challenging schedule. Iowa is 5-4 come on.

It’s on MSN Network on the Dish and Cable in the Balt/DC/VA area.

I’ve been a Pitt fan since 1961 and I say we win this game!

Comment by dan 72 11.08.08 @ 12:17 pm

In the Tampa Bay area, I believe the Brighthouse Sports Network is carrying the game as the Big East game of the week.

It doesn’t specify which game is playing at noon on my channel guide, but it said it was Pitt v. Louisville in the paper.

Is there going to be a live chat thing?

Any word what website may be streaming the game on the Internets? Can’t get ESPN360 thanks to my jerkwad cable company.

Great to see Turner come up with the big TD catch. He hasn’t been the most sure-handed guy this season and this can do nothing but help his confidence. It would be nice to make some adjustments and get the running game going at least a little bit.

Hope we do not get concervative. Not sure whether Louisville may not have more talent on the field.

Go Pitt…hang on

Comment by dan 72 11.08.08 @ 3:23 pm

Don’t think that was blown coverage by Berry, looks like the safety got sucked in on the play action. I’d bet Berry was supposed to have inside help there.

Need another drive.

Comment by Tony (Huntsville, AL) 11.08.08 @ 3:48 pm

Comment by dan 11.08.08 @ 3:48 pm

Go for 2? Would be seriously wussy-ish.

Comment by steve 11.08.08 @ 3:49 pm

Comment by Tony (Huntsville, AL) 11.08.08 @ 3:49 pm

going for 2 makes perfect sense. it better not matter though. no big deal

Comment by Tony (Huntsville, AL) 11.08.08 @ 3:50 pm

I’ll take a “W” and looking like a wuss any day of the week. Given the lead and how much time is left that point shouldn’t even come into play, but stranger things have happened and I’d hate to look back and say “we should have gone for 2″. You gain nothing by kicking the PAT given how much time is left.

Stull looks solid. He has seemed a little bit jittery back there, but that’s to be expected. He’s also made some huge throws.

Now let’s eat the clock.

Comment by TJ 11.08.08 @ 3:53 pm

Gotta trash those unis.

Comment by baudolino 11.08.08 @ 4:04 pm

Comment by steve 11.08.08 @ 4:05 pm

Agree with Steve on the uni’s though. We’ve gotta go throw-backs one game. 1976 style? or 80’s???

Comment by TJ 11.08.08 @ 4:07 pm

Pitt won this being the better disciplined team and executed perfectly. A little trickeration helped. L’ville came to play and beat us up front most of the afternoon. First time in a long while Pitt has put a team away and stomped on em.
Hate L’ville…payback is a bitch!

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by dan 72 11.08.08 @ 4:29 pm

HUGE win considering we had 0 offense. Kudos to the coaches for realizing that and calling different plays: short passes to the TEs, going deep, reverses from the wildcat.

Comment by Hail2Pitt 11.08.08 @ 5:14 pm

Just a solid game…Special Teams was impressive..great recovering of fumbled punts, but wow what a kick coverage team–simply, tremendous!

Cav called a good game, taking advantage of what Louisville gave. They bottled up Shady (except when he smelled the endzone, on a play he look to want to go up the middle, stumbled and found the right side open), and Stull made them pay. Nice grab by Oderick.

Nice to see two Defensive TDs…smart play by Ricky Gary on the ball just sitting on the gorund…and great to see Scott getting into the endzone, dragging a WR for about 5 yards.

Hail to PITT!

Anyone know the last time we got a pick 6?

Comment by Jon C 11.08.08 @ 5:43 pm

I’m thinking Revis was the last one with a pick 6.

Comment by baudolino 11.08.08 @ 5:52 pm

Sept 30, 2006 Gus Mustakas 9 yard int return against Toledo.

Revis scored a few games after that, but it was on a punt return (with the famous Kinder block against WVU Nov 16, 2006).

Comment by maz. 11.08.08 @ 6:19 pm

Revis scored in the first two weeks of that season on INT returns as well, and Clint Session also had one in week 1 of that same 2006 year.

Comment by Brian 11.08.08 @ 7:45 pm

Pitt won and PSU lost to a team that Pitt beat. It’s a good day. Now I need Cincy to win.

Does anyone know where to find a “13-9″ flag/banner?

Comment by Hail2Pitt 11.08.08 @ 7:49 pm

Christmas comes early this year!! Terrific game by the panthers at home to clinch a bowl. And what a better way to cap the day than to see the State Penners weeping on a cold and snowy Iowa field.

Terrific Day. Stull is a world of difference better than Bostick. We all love pat for stepping in and finding ways to win but Stull is the man.

Comment by Rex 11.08.08 @ 8:52 pm

It appears that Galen Hall has switched offensive philosophies with Matt Cavanaugh — my guess that PSU alums will be complaining about the not-to-lose approach. Even though they were almost given 2 TDs, they could not put the game away when they had the chance.

Comment by wild Bill 11.08.08 @ 8:58 pm

you have to root against Notre Dame so they don’t steal our bowl bid!

Comment by Jamie H 11.08.08 @ 9:30 pm

Scott, by no means am I comparing Stull to those guys, just saying he is way superior to Bostick. I do think however that next year he has the ability to be even better.

Really proud of the way our team has bounced back after disappointing losses this year.

Top 5 despicables:

1 Penn State, of course
2 Notre Dame
3 BC - leaving BE
4 Louisville - biggest city in the reddest State
5 WVU - Another red State

Steve,

As far as I’m concerned, the only good thing to come out of Louisville was Hunter S. Thompson and if you read his classic article “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved” you’ll see precisely how much he cared about the swine in KY.

Comment by johnny 11.08.08 @ 10:14 pm

rex, i hear ya. i just wish some switch would go off in kevan smith’s head. he clearly has the best physical skill set of any pitt qb, but doesn’t seem to have the recognition/decision making skills. it’s a shame. he’s matt ryan w/out the moxie.

Comment by scott 11.08.08 @ 10:27 pm

I spent too much time in Louisville on business, 1 day. Remember the line in The Good Shepards, “You’re just visiters?”

Now they’re the visiters.

Comment by steve 11.08.08 @ 10:48 pm

the Eers just lost to Cincy … it just keeps getting better and better

Comment by wild Bill 11.08.08 @ 11:42 pm

The drums are beating all night tonight in the Panther Nation. My head is going to hurt tomorrow but this was a great day! BTW, the PITT special teams coach deserves a raise and contract extension. And the OC and DC are doing a great job too. Give the whole PITT team a hand tonight! Now they have 2 weeks to get healthy and sharp for the season ending run… HTP!!

Comment by IronmanEE68 11.09.08 @ 12:01 am

A bye week to prepare for Cincy is well timed. This is it - time for Wanny to shine. Win the next two and BCS is locked up! UCONN would be rendered meaningless - although still should win that game to keep the critics off the Big East’s back.

Also - anyone that isn’t aware of this site: http://www.justin.tv - check it out. You just search for a tv broadcast you want to see and someone will be feeding it. I am sure it will be shut down through copyright infringement soon, but enjoy it while it lasts.

Comment by wannstache 11.09.08 @ 12:01 am

Ironman, I don’t think we have a special teams coach. I think Wanny took over those responsibilities this year.

Comment by Ann 11.09.08 @ 2:43 am

Let’s review…

Pitt won.

PSU lost - to a team we beat!

The Hoopies lost to Cinci in spite Cinci’s best efforts.

Barack Obama won in a landslide.

Yup, it was a good week!

Comment by Shawn 11.09.08 @ 3:13 am

Would have liked to see the Panthers play WVU for the big east title. but this makes the cincy game all the more important. bye week should be great, especially for the defense. let’s go Pitt!

Comment by TJ 11.09.08 @ 4:29 am

Shawn,

Amen. Obviously, we Pitt fans wanted Iowa to beat PSU more than any other team in the Big Ten. You don’t know how much ammunition Iowa’s win gives me around the office.

Oh, and on a lesser note… um… yeah, good for Obama too.

Comment by Lee (Pitt fan) in State College (sucks) 11.09.08 @ 8:28 am

If Pitt and State Penn win out, wouldn’t it be great to meet in a BCS bowl? A win against them in that setting would be a recruiting coup. I know I’m getting ahead of myself…

Comment by Pittastic 11.09.08 @ 12:11 pm

First, the bad news, uni’s; then, the good news, hoops.

What’s stunning about the uni’s is not only their drabness but that “PITT” is on both the jersey and the helmet. What were they thinking?

The free telecast of the Pitt Fairleigh Dickerson this coming Friday will be on All Access CSTV.

Comment by steve 11.09.08 @ 12:14 pm

For Gods sake Chas, dont even think about ranking pitt this week.

Comment by Rex 11.09.08 @ 12:22 pm

Big win, clutch effort. Taglianetti is lights out, and Baldwin is looking like a future Heisman candidate — major recruiting effort last year. Stull came around when he had too, but looked rusty…completely understandable. Looking forward to seeing him next game, with some more practice under his belt. We could be approaching top 15 by next game.

Comment by Matt N. 11.09.08 @ 1:15 pm

Nice weekend of football, I’m hoping Pitt plays PSU in a BCS game.

Comment by ChrisA 11.09.08 @ 1:32 pm

As much as I am hoping for that match up, do not forget that PSU is a pretty good team. If they were to beat us in a bowl game (one that any other year, we wouldnt belong in) then it would definetly set up a recruiting coup (pittastic), but not one in our favor. It would turn around all the good will we have built in PA while PSU has gone out of state.

But there would be nothing better than a victory.

Comment by Todd Gack 11.09.08 @ 1:39 pm

Highly unlikely for Pitt vs. PSU in a BCS game. BE is projected for the Orange Bowl, probably against ACC or perhaps Utah. PSU’s only chance for the BCS is the Rose Bowl, likely vs. USC the way it looks now.

Comment by HbgFrank 11.09.08 @ 2:02 pm

The Big 10 and Pac-10 champions are both locked into the Rose Bowl. The only possible way for Pitt to play Penn State would be for USC (currently #7) to make the national championship game and Penn State to win the Big 10 but stay out of the championship. This scenario gives the Rose Bowl coordinators the opportunity to pick any other BCS qualifier. The people running the Rose Bowl would then have to decide that Pitt/Penn State is their best available match up.

In other words, its not happening, as much as I’d like to see my school play my favorite school.

Comment by matt 11.09.08 @ 2:22 pm

Assuming we win the conference, I think it’s 95% certain that we are Orange Bowl bound, and a matchup against UNC, Virginia Tech, Weak Forest, or FSU would be no joke. Personally, I’m rooting for Virginia Tech to win the ACC so that we can continue our recent history of ownership over those jokes.

Comment by johnny 11.09.08 @ 2:31 pm

Pitt is #21 in both polls.

Comment by dan 11.09.08 @ 2:44 pm

Hoops on CBS right now: EA sports special has Pitt #2!!

Comment by steve 11.09.08 @ 3:23 pm

More importantly - the next game is #21 Pitt versus #22 Cincy. Assuming Cincy takes care of Louisville, which should happen now, I think Louisville will be reeling. Hopefully we’ll get a 3:30 ABC or 7 PM ESPN game for it - we’ll find out tomorrow.

For 1st place AND for the River City Trophy (we’ve never lost the trophy)!

Comment by Kevin 11.09.08 @ 3:26 pm

todd gack:

if penn state just lost to a team that pitt beat, then why do you assume that pitt would lose to them. and why would pitt not be in a bcs bowl any other year? pitt has played very well the majority of this year. if it wasn’t for a brain fart by the coaching staff in the bowling green, then we would be 8-1 with one bad day at the office. pitt is better than you might think.

Comment by Omar 11.09.08 @ 5:06 pm

I never said that Pitt would lose to PSU. I think Penn State is extremely over-rated. Speaking of any other year, PSU would not be the best team in the Big 10 any other year, everyone is that conference is awful too. But this Pitt team would not win the BE any of the last 3 years when there were legit contenders (UCONN, WVU, Rutgers, USF have all fielded better teams over the last 3 years). It is no secret that the Big East is less than average this year. Wait until the bowl games are announced and all the talk about the BE not deserving an automatic bid while teams like boise state and utah get left out will dominate the headlines once again.

If pitt takes care of business the next 3 weeks, they will stumble into a BSC (Shout out to JoePa) game for the 2nd time in 5 years. There is a difference between deserving a bid and accidentally receiving one.

You can not go back and say that we would be 8-1 without a brain fart from the coaching staff. It was a loss that we deserved. None of the voters are sitting there saying o, pitt should have won that game. We lost it, we deserved to lose it, and we will continue to pay for it through the rankings all season. If you want to look at it that way, we should be 9-0 since we had a brain fart and should have never lost to Rutgers.

Comment by Todd Gack 11.09.08 @ 5:21 pm

@Omar
Penn State is better than you think. Teams choke. Penn State blew it versus Iowa. Pitt screwed up against BG and Rutgers. Florida, arguably the best team in the nation, faces an uphill climb to the national championship because they lost to a 5-4 Ole Miss.

I am a diehard Pitt fan. Both parents went there, and I’ve had season tickets for football and basketball for about a decade.

However, as a Penn State student, I’ve been to every home game and have followed the team throughout the year. The team has an explosive offense, with two elusive RBs, two exceptional QBs, and a trio more than capable senior receivers. The base offense is the spread, though they throw in the wildcat frequently. The defense, as usual, is very strong. As much as I hate to say it, I believe they would destroy Pitt.

Its used very frequently in fan arguments, but the transitive property does not apply in college football.

Comment by matt 11.09.08 @ 5:32 pm

Let’s see. Pitt has one of the top running backs in the country. His back-up is a quality player who could be a star on a lot of teams. The fullback is an excellent blocker and an excellent runner who just doesn’t get that many touches.

We have perhaps the greatest depth of any team for wide receivers. A potential superstar (Baldwin) on deep pass routes. Three quality tight ends. One of the nation’s best place kickers. The special teams are a big plus. On defense, last year’s leading tackler. A tough, fast defensive line.

If the secondary holds, from my perspective, Pitt can match up against anybody.

Comment by BigGuy 11.09.08 @ 5:39 pm

I hate that you are making me do this, but I feel obliged to defend Penn State here. I think I am fairly qualified to pass judgment on the two teams. I’ve seen both teams play in person. I am first and foremost a Pitt FAN. I stay away from the bandwagon and almost always think Pitt will win. However, after watching Penn State play, I simply cannot see Pitt winning.

“If the secondary holds, from my perspective, Pitt can match up against anybody.”

That is a HUGE “if”. Lets break this down.

QB:
I’d take either Darryl Clark or Pat Devlin over Stull, Bostick, and Cross any day. Both are very mobile quarterbacks with cannons for arms.
Edge: PSU

RB:
Evan Royster and Stephfon Green, a sophomore and freshman respectively, are very quick running backs. More LSH than Shady, but they have some power. I’d take Shady over any one of them (actually, I’d take him over any back in the nation), but together Royster and Green are a formidable duo.
Edge: Pitt, barely

WR:
Jonathan Baldwin is a stud in the making, but is still very much a work-in-progress. Oderick Turner is a waste of talent. Unfortunately, Kinder hasn’t been the same since his injury. Pitt has a trio of capable tight ends, but they serve largely as blockers or short pass safety blankets. The rest of Pitt’s receiving corp has modest talent (I really like Aundre Wright, but I’ll get to that), but this is sort of a moot point due to quarterbacking failures. Penn State has 3 super-consistent senior receivers in Deon Butler, Jordan Norwood, and Derrick Williams. Any of them could explode in a given game. While his stats aren’t spectacular, Williams is really the X-factor here. He lines up as WR, RB, and even QB. He catches, runs, and throws, causing defenses to scheme around him. He also has 3 special teams touchdowns. My hope for Pitt is that Aundre Wright fills the role, and if last week is a sign of things to come, that will happen. Pitt has talent but underachieves and doesn’t have a strong QB.
Edge: PSU

K:
Kevin Kelly vs. Conor Lee/Luke Briggs. This is close. Lee has gone 18-20, good for a tie for 3rd place in the NCAA and has never missed an extra point (30-30 this year). However, he doesn’t do kickoffs, handing over that duty to Briggs who has been unspectacular. Kelly is 17-20, which places him in a tie for 8th place. Kelly has gone 46-46 on XP. In terms of overall scoring, Lee places 14th while Kelly is 11th (McCoy is 3rd). Kelly is also in contention for the Lou Groza award, given to the nation’s best kicker.
Edge: Push. Both are excellent kickers, and I wouldn’t mind having either.

I could break down the defense if you’d like, but I’m trying to watch the Steelers. Instead, I’ll just say that PSU is called “Linebacker U” for a reason and point to the #10 pass, #9 rushing, and #6 overal defensive rankings.

I’m sorry, but anyone who believes that Pitt barely has better RBs than Penn State is just not being objective. LeSean is in another league than anyone on their roster.

Comment by CRIMHEAD 11.09.08 @ 6:40 pm

I am a PSU alum who is very provincial, and as a western PA native, I also support Pitt because it is the local school that uses many local players. Thus, I feel I am more objectve than most of the people who post on this site.

Two points I would like to make .. (1) although I believe PSU to be the better team, I don’t think they would ‘destroy’ Pitt. One thing is that Pitt is more prone to mistakes and yesterday was an aberration in that they easily won the turnover battle. (2) I hope the team doesn’t take Cincy for granted as the people who are posting to this site this afternoon with all this talk of the BCS bowl game. Remember, the game is at Cincy where, unlie Pitt, they haven’t lost this year … I think a little dose of reality is required here.

matt:

let’s look at one stat in particular. pitt and penn state have one common opponent, iowa. pitt won and penn state lost. both games were pretty tight, therefore i do not see a decided advantage for either team.

stull actually performs under pressure. clark chokes. clark may be better physically, but i would rather have stull. he is a winner.

Comment by Omar 11.09.08 @ 6:58 pm

Theres only one way to know and thats if the two teams play each other. Since this isnt going to happen, its not really worth it. People can have their own opinions, but its just that: opinions. Matt how about breaking down Oregon State and USC? I dont see oregon state being ahead of usc in any position, but it didnt matter much when the two teams played. Did it? … So to say you can not see it happening, indicates some ignorance on your part.

Comment by Matt D 11.09.08 @ 7:01 pm

Hail to Pitt.
Why are we comparing these two teams when we should be celebrating the Pitt victory and the losses of Penn State and the Mountainqueers in the same night??
We won’t play each other, so it doesn’t matter. You never know who would win, that is why they play the game (perfect example: December 1, 2007)

Comment by Jen 11.09.08 @ 8:11 pm

im surprised pitt only went to 20 in the polls, i was expecting 18 or 19 with all the loses ahead of them. How does ok state only drop to 11 after getting crushed by texas tech?

Comment by mike 11.09.08 @ 8:39 pm

Why don’t PSU and Pitt play each other???? Oh ya, Senile Joe is afraid that losing a game might = losing lots of recruits and won’t play Pitt.

To say the PSU would “destroy” Pitt is a little bit ridiculous. Penn State is a sound, albeit incredibly overrated, football team this season. I would absolutely love to see this in-state rivalry resume. I think it would be great for both programs and great for the state.

Comment by Sharty Mottenheimer 11.09.08 @ 8:39 pm

Another common opponent is Syracuse. We won by 10, PSU (sucks) killed them 55-13. Comparing common opponents never makes sense. But it’s irrelevant because we won’t play them anyway.

We do play Cincy, who’s also turning it on at the right time. They only lost to UConn because they had 6 turnovers and no rushing yards. Right now they’re the team to beat because of the tie-breaker they hold over WVU. We can’t look past this game. Wanny should put mousetraps all over campus, not just the practice facility.

Despite their record, Louisville is not bad. They had the best gameplan against McCoy of anyone this year. I know that turnovers and special teams are a part of the game, but if they didn’t turn the ball over, it’s a completely different game (Pitt turning that into points is a sign of a great team).

I’ll rest easier if Louisville beats Cincy. They need that 6th win to be bowl eligible and it’s a Friday night home game.

Comment by Hail2Pitt 11.09.08 @ 8:45 pm

Jen,
U Rock!
if the Stillers would have won, it would have been the perfect weekend! State Penn, WVU choke, and Pitt spanks Louisville. What more does a Pitt fan want. to Matt, I say 12-0 and the previous 2 games were pretty close also. I believe a blocked fg on the last play of the game won one for State Penn. I think the overall strength of schedule hurts St Penn in BCS standings year after year. Fla Int and Buffalo only help so much. I will give the Buckeyes credit, they have played Texas and Usc in the past. Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained.
Go Pitt!!

Comment by Kurt 11.09.08 @ 8:54 pm

With Greg Cross coming from a JC, is he still eligible for a redshirt year?

Comment by Z-boy 11.09.08 @ 9:47 pm

I’d like to clarify my points about Pitt and Penn State’s running backs. I believe Shady is the best running back in the country, which is why I ultimately gave Pitt the edge. However, Royster and Green are both better than LSH. Collins is an excellent fullback, but he is a non-factor with only 2 or 3 carries per game. Pitt would still have the better ground game if it was only Shady and myself in the backfield. However, Penn State’s run offense is ranked #12, while Pitt, carried by McCoy’s 1 man show, is #54. As a team, they are comparable.
Shady > Royster > Green > LSH

And to repeat what I said earlier, the transitive property does not apply in college football. The only way to truly compare teams is a head to head matchup. Every team has bad games. Personally, I’m more afraid of Florida now that they’ve lost one.

Comment by matt 11.09.08 @ 10:12 pm

Comment by hot sauce 11.09.08 @ 11:07 pm

Matt, interesting analyses. Definitely advances the discussion.

Comment by BigGuy 11.09.08 @ 11:24 pm

Matt,
I respectfully disagree with your assessment. Pitts edge at running back is their most glaring advantage over PSU and it is a large one. Royster and Green are average college backs playing behind an excellent line. I’ve watched several of their games and neither really do anything special, other than running through large holes and being physical. LSH fills his role perfectly as a compliment to Shady. If you put that combo behind PSU’s o-line in their offense PSU would lead the country in rushing. 2 average backs don’t make up for the best back in the country. There is more to a rushing attack then the backs and that is why Royster and Green have success. Think about this. Do you think Pitt would have had success running at ND if Royster or Green were their back? No way. Do you think they would have run for nearly as many yards or TD’s this year? No way. The reason this happens is because Shady and LSH can both create something out of nothing. Both are are faster and quicker runners than the other side of the ball. They are behind a far inferior O-Line yet continue to produce because they can make people miss and hit holes that would close before Royster or Green could get to them. I believe that 3 guys currently sitting on Pitt’s bench: Shariff Harris, Kevin Collier, and Chris Burns are all on the level of Royster and Green. I understand what your saying in terms of production, but in terms of talent, those guys aren’t even close to Shady/LSH combo. In spite of his size LSH has actually done an excellent job carrying the ball this year in short down situations and inside the 20. He has become a much more powerful runner. He may not seem like it with his small stature, but he also has a low center of gravity. If Royster and Green are Pitt’s backs this year, I believe Pitt loses to ND, Iowa, USF and possibly even Syracuse. The fact is these two guys are two of the greatest playmakers on the team, and one may be the greatest playmaker in the country. Royster and Green type backs are found on probably 50 teams throughout the NCAA.

Comment by PCC 11.09.08 @ 11:44 pm

If you believe PSU would kill Pitt I don’t think you can really be a Pitt fan. Pitt is a far stronger team than Iowa and they beat state. That shows that Pitt can definitely hang and can win if they play well. I also say far stronger than Iowa, because Cav has oppened the offense so much since that game and the Panthers O is a different monster. The one reason they don’t play is as a previous poster stated PSU is afraid of losing and losing recruits. There is no other explanation. It was a great rivalry, with exciting games, and great physical play. So to say Pitt would get creamed by a team that is afraid to play them is comical. And…LSH + McCoy >>>>>> Royster + Green. That is one area Pitt absolutely is on a different level then PSU and to argue the opposite is crazy.

Comment by Beanooo 11.09.08 @ 11:51 pm

I agree with above (PCC) analysis — Shady/LSH are superior but PSU has much better O-line. Also in PSU favor is receivers as a group are better. Baldwin is real good but PSU has 3 accomplished receivers and D Williams is as good a playmaker as there is. … This leads to a match-up problem with Cincy which, unlike Lousiville, has very good CBs and will match up well against Pitt while stacking against the run. I would like to see Byham and Dickerson go more vertical as an answer

Comment by wild Bill 11.09.08 @ 11:59 pm

Matt, I can follow most of your logic, but…if LSH was on PSU’s roster, or Green and Royster were on Pitt’s roster, LSH would be playing in front of both of them (and not just because JoePa and DW tend to favor juniors and seniors). The only reason LSH is not a better known player is that a freak of a player came along and took over the starting job. Trust me, Pitt has a few young RB’s that are highly impressive, and they are not seeing the field. Lastly, you are correct, comparing common oppenents is not of much use, but you fail to consider the fact that Pitt and PSU can’t stand each other. If that PSU team with Lavar Arrington did not blow out a far less talented Pitt team (in Pgh or Happy Valley), what makes you think that this PSU team would blow out Pitt now? Nope, both of the conservative head coaches would play to keep it close into the fourth quarter and try to squeeze out a win, proably with their kicker!

Comment by hbgfrank 11.10.08 @ 12:18 am

I will concede that, as a result of seeing most games in person and not having access to instant replay, I completely ignored the effects of the o-line when grading the running backs. I judged that based on what I saw and what the stat sheet said. The benefits of a strong o-line are immeasurable, and I should have factored that into my RB comparison.

“Nope, both of the conservative head coaches would play to keep it close into the fourth quarter and try to squeeze out a win, proably with their kicker!”
Penn State’s playcallers are anything but conservative. JoePa is a very conservative coach, but he has very little impact on gameday. I’m not calling him a figurehead. He certainly runs practice and schemes leading up to the games, but on Saturday, he sits up in his press box and watches. Penn State runs an offense they call the “Spread HD.” No one knows what the name means, but its basically a super spread offense. According to ESPN, its gotten them 52 20+ yard plays in 9 games. I don’t know how this would affect a Pitt-PSU game, but you’re mistaken if you believe that PSU runs a conservative offense.

Any team can win on any given day. Pitt fans should know that very well after last year. Emotions and coaching are major factors. I still believe PSU beats Pitt 4 out of 5 times.

A perfect example of what I said earlier about transitive victories (from Sporting News):
C is for Concatenation. Or the fascinating chaining of transitive loss one can run through at this point in the season. For example: Penn State loses to Iowa, who lost to Pitt, who lost to Bowling Green, who lost to Miami of Ohio, who lost to Temple, who lost to Western Michigan, who lost to Nebraska, who lost to Virginia Tech, who lost to Eastern Carolina, who lost to Houston, who lost to Colorado State, who lost to Cal, who lost to USC, who lost to Oregon State, who lost to Penn State 45-14 way back on September 6th.

Comment by matt 11.10.08 @ 1:13 am

Pitt-PSU wont happen until PSU has something to gain from renewing the rivalry. Pitt fans, if we were consistently top 10, and PSU was barely making the top 25 and had not been in a bowl for almost 5 years, would you want to play PSU? You should not…why? WHat is there to gain? If you lose, PSU potentially gets the recruiting edge. PSU sells out every game at home no matter the opponent, and most on the road.

Other than bragging rights, there is no reason for PSU to schedule Pitt. That is the same reason why you dont see the basketball team playing PSU any more. What does the hoops program gain? Nothing.

Comment by GREG 11.10.08 @ 10:30 am

Matt,
Completely agree with the absurdity of comparing PSU and Pitt transitively.
I also think that the offensive line is the one area where PSU does have a tremendous advantage. And line play is so significant because of its implications on both the passing and running game. I think its a little bit ridiculous to state that either team would dominate the game and I’m not even sure PSU wins 4 of 5 times. They are a good team, but I also think they are still overrated at #8. If I had to, I guess I would give them a slight edge.

That being said, I would love nothing more than to see the two teams line up against one another. In an in-state rivalry game like that neither team has a decided advantage. I don’t think you could overstate the importance of home field advantage in a game like that, which is something else to consider if you’re going to evaluate this match up.
Anyway, those of us who would like to see a Pitt-PSU game can all keep dreaming because it, unfortunately, isn’t going to happen any time soon.

Comment by TJ 11.10.08 @ 10:39 am

Greg,
of course this game isn’t going to happen but its a joke that these two teams are not playing each other. Renewing this once great rivalry would provide a tremendous boost for both programs. If it turned into an annual contest it could be a much bigger rivalry than even Pitt-WVU. It would be great for recruiting for both schools.

Also, who is PSU’s rival right now? They don’t have one. They like to think it’s Ohio State, but come on, everyone knows that OSU-Michigan is the big cheese there.

Comment by Sharty Mottenheimer 11.10.08 @ 10:43 am

Greg,
You don’t play a rivalry game just because you have something to gain. You play it because first of it’s good for the fans and its tradition. To end it in the first place was ridiculous and shows how cowardly PSU is. Pitt would play PSU regardless if they were the number 1 team in the country and PSU was 150. PSU isn’t a perenial top 10 team for starters. I seem to remember a 4-7 and 3-9 season not too long ago. Disillusioned PSU fans like to put there program on that level but it isn’t always there. Second, PSU does have something to gain, how about the recruits that Wanny has been getting at Pitt from PA the past few years. These are guys that almost assuredly would have went somewhere else prior to his tenure. By winning over Pitt a few times PSU could steal some of these. (PSU knows these wins wouldn’t happen easily or consistently so they don’t play). But of course this won’t ever happen. The PSU program is so disillusioned that they actually convince themselves the reason they don’t play Pitt is b/c they are on a different level and have nothing to gain from it. Yet, the real reason is they are flat out scared to play. PSU’s arrogance truly showed through in their offer years ago to play if it was a two at home one on the road contest. This is unheard of in a rivalry. Especially in a rivalry in which the last time the teams played your team was shut out and lost 12-0. Shame on PSU for ending a great rivalry. Renewing this matchup would not only show that PSU isn’t as far ahead of the Panthers as they think, but it would also show that the Big10 really isn’t as far ahead as the BE as they like to think.

Comment by Beanooo 11.10.08 @ 11:15 am

Matt, first let me say that I think PSU is a Top 10 team, but the Spread HD turns into the “Spread” against good defenses and they revert to form. That is to say, they rely on the running game far more than the passing game. The OSU game was far from “HD”, same is true for the Iowa game (weather affected it, but Iowa managed to throw for 2X the yards as PSU, so it was not all weather). As for the 52 plays of 20+ yards, it would be interesting to see a breakdown by game of which teams those plays came against. I remain fairly confident that if PSU and Pitt played, both offenses would serve up a steady diet of off tackle runs, screen passes, end arounds, and TE throws, with the occasional deep throw to try for the home run. It’s about going with the high percentage play. The longer the throw, the lower the success rate. If it was all about deep passes, why not just line up and throw deep balls all day? I am fairly sure that JoePa still decides what game plan will be used on both sides of the ball. I know DW and his tendencies. If these two teams played, there is a high proability that a kicker decides a relatively low scoring game.

Comment by HbgFrank 11.10.08 @ 11:21 am

Great points on why rivalry games are played Beanooo. I don’t really buy the “nothing-to-gain” argument. In any rivalry there are going to be periods of dominance by one team. That’s the nature of football at the collegiate level, but the showcasing of both teams, and the tradition and pageantry that can be established with rivalries far outweigh the risks (in my opinion maybe not JoePa’s)of losing a game to a lesser team every now and then.

There have been plenty of years (especially in the late 80’s early 90’s) when Notre Dame had nothing to gain by playing some horrendous Pitt teams yet they played relatively frequently and have revived the series. I think Pitt fans probably think of this as more of a rivalry than ND fans do, nonetheless its always an interesting match up. You end up with some great games, like last weekends 4OT game and the longest in ND Stadium history. At least I can respect the Irish for playing us.

As great as the ND/Pitt series is, a Pitt/PSU series could be so much more.

Comment by TJ 11.10.08 @ 11:45 am

I agree they should have the series. You all make good points about why there should be a series again. Let me ask you this though - was it a big deal in the late ’90s when we last had the matchup? Were there any lasting effects from that series for either team? Wasn’t the last game at Three rivers not a sell-out? An out of conference game the fisrt weekend of the season just does not have the impact now as this series did in the “glory days” where both teams were perennial powers, and that game decided which team may go play for the national title. College football has changed - those types of games just dont have the impact for the teams as they once did.

I just dont think PSU sees anything to gain from renewing it. Period. Whether they are right or wrong who can really say. It is their program.

Speaking of geographical rivalries, Pitt should not even bother with PSU and start a series with Ohio State. Both schools there would have something to gain from the series, particularly in recruiting. I am surprised there is not more of a push for that series.

Comment by GREG 11.10.08 @ 12:03 pm

I guess my point is that I think that renewing a rivalry with Penn State could give both teams a push and take a step towards returning them to their “glory days”. I think your assessment is partially correct in that PSU doesn’t see anything to gain. I think they’re wrong, but my opinion is biased and I think its fair to say that Pitt has more to gain.

Comment by TJ 11.10.08 @ 12:16 pm

For the love of God, if we do end up winning the Big East and playing in a BCS bowl, let it be against someone other than Utah. Talk about a game in which there is nothing to gain and everything to lose. I feel for any program that has to play a non-BCS team in a BCS bowl.

Comment by Comatose 11.10.08 @ 12:36 pm

Agree. That would be a tough spot to be in (again). Playing a good team from a no-name conference, very little upside. You beat them and you don’t earn respect and a loss is a huge negative. I think Utah is a dangerous team and really wouldn’t want to see them in a bowl. If that would happen about the only positive result would be to dish out a serious beating but I think that would be tough to do b/c they’re not at all a bad team.

Comment by Sharty Mottenheimer 11.10.08 @ 1:23 pm

Greg,
They do have something to gain. And its an arrogant belief by PSU fans thinking they have nothing to gain. If they’d beat Pitt solidly it will be much harder for DW to swing recruits to Pitt. Pitt has been recruiting PA like crazy since DW has arrived and PSU has been missing out on top prospects. Lets be honest, the fear is that Pitt will out-perform the Nitanny Lions on the field, and this would be even more fuel for DW’s recruiting. This is what PSU doesn’t want. They cover up the fear with this attitude that their is nothing to gain.

Comment by Beanooo 11.10.08 @ 4:14 pm

I don’t wanna get ahead of myself, but if Pitt would win the Big East…
Mark Schlabach of ESPN has them projected to play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowlprojection?season=2008&week=11

Not sure I agree with that projection, but I think that would be sweet. No doubt a tough match up, but it would be interesting to see how we’d fare against an SEC foe.
