It’s a minor thing compared to the on-the-field performance, but there were some noticeable changes at Heinz Field so far this year. I know some of the guys at CatBasket have been helping with suggestions and ideas for Heinz Field to be more of a Pitt home field. Sorry, ripping off “Sweet Caroline” from the Red Sox doesn’t work for me because 1) cheesy Neil Diamond doesn’t do it; 2) it’s just ripping off someone else’s gimmick; 3) as a Yankees fan, it set my teeth to grinding.

There are some hits like the great banner running behind the visitor sideline of Pitt greats through the history. Love it.

Then there’s the clear Pederson influence. The exiting the locker room and coming out of the tunnel camera for the Pitt team led by Coach Wannstedt before the game. That was a Pederson thing from the Harris regime. Then there’s the return of a certain logo.

That’s right the gold and blue blob-cat is back and Jeff Long’s version appears to be out. The old panther head was the only one seen around the field. On the tunnels at the end of a couple banners.

It’s a little thing, but I must have missed the memo on the switch. Was there an official change? Looks that way. This brings up an issue that bothered me when I took a quick look at some Pitt gear in the stadium. The confusion and complete muddling of the logo.

Pitt really needs to just make a decision about old gear. There was gear for sale with all different Pitt logos (and I’m not even including the throwback stuff) — the “Iron bar Pitt“, the new/old panther head, the newer panther head, the old font with “Pittsburgh,” I even saw a couple of the panther tooth items. This extends to the Pitt official store (obviously, since I used their site to show the examples). Where the gear is just all over the place.

The first thing is that it reflects on the obvious cheapness of the merchandising arm not to just say, “screw it,” and ship the old clothing that didn’t sell to South America or some charity overseas. It also shows the general disarray of figuring out the logo.

They seemed to have gotten it right with the arched “Pitt.” I like it well enough. It’s simple and clean. It’s the dominate logo. Now, lose all the old fonts and junk from the past 10 years of misses.

Trying to figure out the right panther, though, has remained a mystery. I disliked both recent incarnations. Pederson panther head is a dense blot of blue and gold that makes my eyes hurt if I look at it too long. The Long panther-dog head was hardly an improvement.

I’ve thought the students have come out strong this year. I disagree with Kevin Gorman who asked, “What? You want a cookie?” It isn’t easy to build the student support when the team has performed the way it has in the Wannstedt era. The Buffalo game was more of a struggle than it should have been and that first game sapped a lot of energy and hope. In the 3+ years of Wannstedt, the biggest wins at Heinz Field were the opening night 20056 thrashing of what turned out to be a bad Virginia team (but at least it was beating a BCS team) and last year’s win over ranked Cinci.

Well said Chas, thank you! This conversation came up in the other thread when I bitched about copying the Red Sox and someone made the comment that it didn’t matter because the Penguins aren’t the only team that play Rock and Roll Part 2 after a goal and nonsense like that. That comment really scared me as a Pitt fan. It seems to suggest that this fan base is fine with copying things off of other teams because we need *something* to cling to. Sentiment like that belies the point that we have a strong tradition and we are a proud fan base dating back to before Neil Diamond even RECORDED Sweet Caroline. Pederson, obviously, has been a thorn in the sides of the traditionalists since the word go. He wants to rebrand Pitt(sburgh), and mostly, its been a failure. But what shocks me is not just that some people are ignoring our history, but that they seem to think that rebranding us in mimicry of some other team is acceptable as we grasp in the darkness for an identity.

I’m proud of my University, proud of my teams, and proud of the city I spent 22 years in. If singing the Alma Mater is the thing, I’m all over it. I even sang it every time they played it during the Olympics. (Its the German national anthem, for those who didn’t pick up on that.) If we want to start a new tradition, chant, singalong, or signature niche for the fan-base to be identified by, fine, let’s figure it out. But let’s have the students and the fans/alums build those traditions. Not the Red Sox, the Cowboys, Real Madrid, or whomever else Pederson is going to look to next for inspiration.

And thank God I got a script Pitt shirt while Jeff Long was around, who knows when those will be back again.

Hail to Pitt!

During the last game I noticed the cheerleaders were flying a huge Pederson Panther logo flag, which I chalked up to, “when you drop $1500 on a Panther flag it’s not something you’re just going to throw away after 6 years”. It would be a shame to see that thing come back, after it exhausted its run with WaHa.

In 1967 the helmets had an interesting panther design which I can’t say I dislike: link to farm2.static.flickr.com

And Lastly this classic bit from Souf Oaklin’ never fails to crack me up:

Thanks from me as well. I agree that the whole “Sweet Caroline” thing is kinda lame. On a similar note its a college game so I want to hear the band, not some pop music blaring out of the stadium speakers.

Is there a graphic design program? Heck offer some prize if a student or alumni can come up with an original decent looking panther logo… it might come out better than what you would get hiring some marketing firm that just cranks out meaningless logos for anybody and everybody.

Comment by now walt has his revenge 09.10.08 @ 12:59 pm

ha ha ha the Rite-Aid Panther looks better than the dinocat for sure. that 1967 one is better than what we have now!

Comment by now walt has his revenge 09.10.08 @ 1:02 pm

The “Sweet Caroline” sing-along has started popping up with more and more teams. We do it at Penn State. Wikipedia has an extensive list of several dozen teams.

I think what the Cat Basket guys are doing is trying to do something to unite the stadium. It’s a start- obviously it’s not original or as great as Wisconsin’s “Jump Around” but at this point, it’s so damn tough to be original. We don’t have the prestige of a program to have anything really special. However, I do propose to start a tradition of rubbing the nose of the Panther before basketball games. I do it already and it’d be nice if other people joined me in jumping up to touch the statue before games.

Comment by merlin 09.10.08 @ 1:27 pm

Actually, I’d prefer “Jump Around” at this point because it’d mean more standing and cheering. And while that is in and of itself a good thing, it also has the wonderful bonus of likely angering the bozos behind us who believe that the “stadium exeprience” should be the exact same thing as their “living room” experience.

Comment by Shawn 09.10.08 @ 1:52 pm

As soon as I heard Sweet Caroline I said, “Pederson strikes again!”. While I don’t hate it, I do agree we need to find our own thing. The logo indecision is embarrassing. Make up your mind and let’s move on.

You have a mediocre team, half-cocked promotions, ambiguous identity and a careless disregard for history then wonder why your fans are apathetic.

Comment by Yeti 09.10.08 @ 1:56 pm

First off, Chas is a Yankee fan?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Anyhow, I noticed on TV that the band doesn’t play enough during games. When I watch college ball, a little recorded music over the p.a. isn’t bad, but I want to hear the band burst into song every time we do something good.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 09.10.08 @ 2:19 pm

a) Pederson had nothing to do with “Sweet Caroline”
b) The band does play after everything we do well. They’ve got this great little “Go Pitt!…Go Pitt!…First Down!” thing that the whole student section (and we should get the whole stadium involved) joins in on. They do a good job playing cadences and stuff after big plays as well. I live with a couple of guys in the drumline and they have a LOT of in-game stuff they have prepared. Maybe you can’t hear it well on TV, but they certainly play it.

Comment by merlin 09.10.08 @ 3:09 pm

I gotta admit when I heard the first few notes of Sweet Caroline I groaned and said same thing about copying…but I gotta admit it worked…students were really into it and everyone around me was laughing and smiling. I say keep it..(unless somebody realy comes up with a better idea and with only 6 games a year not many chances to try other things.)

And not to use because it is a copy is just silly..it’s done so the fans have a good time..who cares where it came from.

As far as playing/singing Alma Mater…we’re trying to attract new fans not drive them away.

Didn’t we have our own little tradition..PENN STATE SUCKS..P E N N S T Sucks…How sad was that. I dread having to hear that again someday.

Comment by section 110 09.10.08 @ 3:17 pm

I agree the block PITT is solid. Not counting the script argument, it beats the hell out of “Pittsburgh”, which is a city- not the school. We’re PITT dammit.

I’m willing to bet the confusion is temporary- between stopping the production of the pantherdog logo and an upcoming change in the logo to something new and non-embarrasing. …at least I hope

Comment by Dan35 09.10.08 @ 3:52 pm

merlin- thanks, I forgot about the first down thing. I remarked at the game about it since my wife and I miss the “FIIIIRRRRSST DOOOWWWWN, PANTHERS!” PA announcer from about 5 years ago. It needs to catch on. I don’t remember hearing it at the Bowling Green game—-oh wait, did we GET a first down at that game?

Comment by Kevin 09.10.08 @ 3:54 pm

I think the gameday atmosphere has been pretty darn impressive this year compared to past seasons (about as good as a 3/5 full stadium can get!!). I missed the BG game but I was at Buffalo and expecting NOBODY to be there. Turns out it was only 2,000 or so less despite the disappointing loss. I usually go to every game (section 110 also…what row?). But I thought that student tailgate thing was way cool and the student section was about 20x better than it was at any point last season (size AND enthusiasm). Obviously there are some things to be worked on but I think it’s a success so far.

And Sweet Caroline was cool. Inserting “Let’s Go Pitt” is kinda tacky though.

Comment by bmcelhinny 09.10.08 @ 5:01 pm

I am new to this blog and wanted to say something that everyone else is probably already thinking based upon our offense’s performance of late (last 3 years). I am a Walt Harris gal – always have been and think he would make an excellent offensive coordinator. I have mentioned this in the stands at the Pitt games to a number of fans and they all agree. It could be a little awkward (Walt working for his replacement), but Pitt needs to do something and the goal should be what is in the best interest of team – – mainly to start winning again. The last bowl game we saw was with Walt – what think ye?

Comment by Sallie 09.10.08 @ 6:59 pm

thanks for the info merlin. I had to listen to the past 2 games on the radio so all i heard was the stadium speaker music.

blame my inner nerd but I would love to hear the band play this between downs whenever the defense needs to make a big stop… never heard it played by any other college bands and its a classic…for some of us anyway 🙂

Comment by joe 09.10.08 @ 8:45 pm

Sallie I noticed no one was giving you any love, so ill give you my two cents.

On the surface that seems fine and good. Our offenses put up good #’s while harris was here and was far more exciting to watch! But lets face it, this simply wont happen.

A) Wanny and Walt have extremely different coaching philosphies and would never fit together!

B) Walt wouldnt come back. I just dont see him accepting such a positon on a team he previously was head coach for several years… not happening.

Comment by Matt D 09.10.08 @ 8:53 pm

Correct me if I’m wrong. But didn’t Pederson state in his press conference, when it was announced he was coming back, that it was indeed PITT? I can’t believe he’s trying to screw with the logo again, blah! Somebody needs to design a bad ass looking panther and demand he use it! Otherwise, just stay with the current PITT block lettering.

Comment by Dugdog 09.10.08 @ 10:03 pm

Why don’t they just take a picture of the panther head on the bridge to Schenley Park, digitize it, add some blue and gold color and use that?

Comment by Dugdog 09.10.08 @ 10:06 pm

anything to get the fans more excited and into the Pitt game is great, especially at heinz field where people are usually reserved. Here at UCF they play Zombie Nation like a thousand other schools, but everyone is into it and no one cares that other schools do it. we even put a “U-C-F KNIGHTS” in the middle of the song.

Comment by matt in orlando 09.10.08 @ 10:44 pm

While Matt makes good sense, in another sense Sally’s right that Walt could probably add a lot to the offense. We would have to be kinder and gentler in the overall Panther nation for that to happen. It should be possible but probably is not at the present time. Somehow something will change in that regard sometime, but it is too early to predict. Maybe the offense under the present regime will change as the OL and QB play get better. It might already have started to happen, only we need to see more games with steady and noticeable improvement to make that judgement. HTP!!

Comment by IronmanEE68 09.10.08 @ 10:47 pm

Merlin, What is the first down thing the band does? I saw the students doing something at the game, but couldn’t hear it to join in. Maybe we need to have a “training session” for the whole stadium before the game.

Comment by Ann 09.11.08 @ 12:52 am

on the first down thing, you will hear part of the fight song then it goes “da da da da, GO PITT, da da da da, GO Pitt, da da da da da da da da FIRST DOWN!

(the da da’s are drum beats)

Comment by Dan 09.11.08 @ 1:24 am

The first down thing has been going on for years and no one has caught on. The students are finally doing it with the band this year. I wish the students would start a P… I… chant. The Lets go Pitt chant after we score is boring!

Comment by Pete 09.11.08 @ 6:01 am

I am so glad the band is back by the student section this year. I sit in the section 132 (next to the band…opposite the students). Now that I can actually see and hear what the band is doing, I noticed that they had a lot of good cheers that the crowd should adopt.

Comment by Matt2 09.11.08 @ 8:12 am

Sweet Caroline is an absolute embarrassment. Aside from the sick feeling inspired by taking anything from Boston, it has got to be one of the least energizing songs I can think of. Connecticut is widely reknown as a pansy state, yet even at their games nothing but Gn’R, DMX, and Rage come out of the speakers.

Comment by PITTinCT 09.11.08 @ 9:33 am

PITTinCT, I agree 100%: Connecticut is a total pansy state.

Comment by ChrisA 09.11.08 @ 9:48 am

Merlin,

It must be the way the networks cover the game, but I hardly hear the band play at all during the game. But I did clearly hear it everytime they played music over the p.a. system (I heard them play “Renegade” by Style, ala the Steelers, during the Bowling Green game. Talk about “groan”, and I actually like the Steelers.)

Maybe the networks just put a million mics in the band section for certain teams. For instance, during Michigan and/or Notre Dame games they make sure that you CLEARLY hear it on TV when they play their fight songs every 10 freaking seconds.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 09.11.08 @ 9:59 am

And oh, I meant “Styx” not “Style”. Wow, somehow I made that band sound even gayer than they already are!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my dad 09.11.08 @ 10:01 am

I actually like sweet caroline. Who cares if other schools do it, there are something like 117 D1 schools, so chances are anything we do will be copying somebody. PENNST Sucks was probably the only truly original cheer we had. And the point of the song isn’t to get people fired up and ready to kill something, it’s to get everyone up, singing, and making some noise, so they continue to make noise throughout the 4th quarter. Sure Gn’R or Rage is more intimidating, but really, how many times have you ever been to a sporting event where a Gn’R song was played and the student section, or whole stadium for that matter, really got into it and sang along??

As for the logo thing, script would be great, but the block PITT looks pretty good too. Now if we could just find a real looking panther… oh wait, we had one, way back before we started using the script, and it was paired with a block Pitt…

WHO REALLY CARES where the inspiration to play Sweet Caroline came from? It was fun. It got the students and many others in the stadium going. I know it got me going. I was slumped in my seat thinking how can the game be this close and will it be a repeat of last week. The song came on and I found myself cheered up singing along “LETS GO PITT” with it. So people who have hang-ups about the Red Sox and Boston can get over it.

You can really tell people are upset with the football team if they are complaining about things like this…..

Jimbo-
Also, I think it might be that quite a few times when the band is playing, it’s mostly the drumline doing things to rally up the crowd. Like I said, I live with a few of the leaders of the drumline, and we’ve been talking this week about coordinating the student section and the line- i.e., I’ll look at them between plays, they’ll give me a signal, and we’ll start a band/student section chant/song/cadence sort of thing.

Comment by merlin 09.11.08 @ 12:35 pm

There is one aspect that I like what the students do, and I think they need to due it more. That is tapping on the stadium seats before kick off. Why dont they do that when the defense is out there, or on field goal block team? It seems like that generates a good amount of noise. If the rest of the stadium could do that it would be loud enough. Also too why doesnt the band maybe pick up on the Sweet Caroline and play it for the fans to sing along with? You know even with the Bowling Green loss I still feel that this team and program (if properly coached) can do something special. I think it is very close.

Neither Dan nor Sara D gets it. SOME of the fans liked it. That’s the reason for this thread, because SOME of the fans did not like it. That’s the entire concept of intelligent discourse. To attempt to marginalize a discussion because you disagree with another’s point of view is the definition of hubris. The point that many of us are trying to make is that while we support the idea of rallying the fan base with chants and songs, we’d appreciate it if a program with one hundred years of tradition could carve out its own niche rather than resorting to mimicry of other sports teams/fans. Do the exact same thing but replace “Sweet Caroline” with “Yellow Submarine” and this thread would’ve been totally different. (Note, I’m randomly picking a song that lots of people would know, if there are other programs that use that song, I apologize. My point is that “Sweet Caroline” is already a signature staple of the Red Sox fan experience. Use a song by The Clarks for all I care. Just be original.)

If you like that we do it so much, why don’t the rest of the alumni join in? My biggest complaint from being at Pitt football AND basketball games is that the alumni very rarely get into what the student section does. The Zoo’s considering doing a “Zoo for a Day” game where everybody has Zoo shirts and it’d be great to have that whole stadium jumping and screaming, if only for a few possessions.

I know that DPJ and all of his friends are into the game from beginning to end, but that only lasts for about the first 5 rows of the student section. Behind them, it’s a bunch of kids who don’t give two shits about the game and are only there because it’s the only thing to do at noon. They bang on the seats for the opening kickoff and then fall asleep.

I’m a senior in high school and I’m more excited/pumped up for the game and team than they are. Let’s repeat that…I DON’T EVEN GO TO PITT. When I look down at the student section in the 2nd quarter, I see the first few rows filled with people who actually care about what’s happening on the field but then the other 3/4 is just groups of kids talking and hanging around. Then, halftime comes and it seems like half the students leave for food and never even come back. What the hell is that about? Are there really only 100 students at Pitt out of 20,000 that are passionate about the football team?

And why do so many of them finally decide to make noise WHEN WE HAVE THE BALL??

But if anyone is worse than the students, it’s 98% of the other people there. Other than the few, like Chas, who at least attempt to cheer, it’s a bunch of people who want to sit there, slouch down, and not make a noise. We have the luxury of a stadium that has BUILT IN NOISEMAKERS! Those plastic seats are perfect to bang…try that with the bleachers at WVU, Michigan, or anywhere else. And have you ever gone to the top of the upper deck sections and banged on the huge metal section sign? You can hear it across the stadium! (I know…I tried it at the Rutgers game a few years ago.)

If you think what I’m saying is wrong, then you’re not at the same Heinz Field that I go to.

It’s PATHETIC.

Comment by Dennis 09.11.08 @ 5:17 pm

WALT for OC! I would love it!

Dino Cat kicks the shit out of Pitt DOG/Cat/Pug logo thing that was rolled out last yerar but we could do better, and it would be nice if we had an original sing a long song.

Comment by Tony In Harrisburg 09.11.08 @ 5:59 pm

Dennis you make some good points but at least even the the most ho-hum “down-in-front!” Pitt fans at Heinz field actually attend the games. I take much more offense at the Pittsburgh populace that puts Pitt at a tier below the Steelers (apparently a given), the Penguins, the Pirates (inexplicable) and even high school football. I love the city and I love the school, but these so called ‘football crazy’ Pittsburghers leave the Panthers high and dry for every home game every single year. I don’t want to indict every single person in the city who doesn’t like Pitt, because what you do on your Sat. afternoons is your business – but now we get to deal with conflicts with the Pirates over parking?.. no even more than that… we LOSE those same conflicts with the effing Pirates over parking!?!?! So if you want to talk about PATHETIC reserve that designation for the Pirates attendees. Pirates fans are chumps. “Yeah! C’mon kids! Saturday day game! Awright!!” You gotta be kidding me… Pirates have been out of contention since July 1998. Some might say, “If Pitt wins more games… those people would attend.” They don’t get that a large crowd is a gigantic factor in the success of a fb program… for gameday atmosphere, for revenue, for recruiting..the list goes on. I guarantee if HALF of the attendees of a September Pirates Sat. day game went to Heinz instead of PNC we wouldn’t hear a thing about “Sweet Caroline” or whatever… we would be talking about how electric it was in the football stadium.
So my point is that I’m slow to criticize the fans who actually attend the game because 1) I only WISH I could attend every home game. and 2) we were outdrawn by stinkin Baylor last year & if that’s the company we want to keep then we all may as well go to the f’ing Sat. Pirates game to collect our commemorative phallic minibat and bobble our collective heads in the stands because that’s basically as good as it’s going to get.
Typical Pittsburgh sports fan with the, “Win some games first -and then I’ll go.” BULLSHIT. You get on board because it is a damn good time no matter where you sit or who you meet @ the game. Pitt Athletes won’t throw it in the tank for the late season, that’s for sure and after it all when the team does well you can actually feel justified in saying “we” when “we” finally collect our 10th national title. Pfft…Win and the fans will show up.
Here’s news- there’s only so myuch you can do to heal a program by changing coaches or logos or even stadiums… the fans have got to play their role too. Again, this not directed at Pitt fans who attend the games, but I’ve got a souvenir minibat over here for any Pittsburghers who want to attend the Pirates game the night of our game v. Iowa.
Pfft… “win and the fans will show up.”

Comment by ChrisA 09.11.08 @ 6:45 pm

I don’t see any complaints about the fans and cheeleaders in the stadium chanting “Let’s Go Pitt!” — which they have been doing for the 17 years that I have been attending Pitt games, and probably longer. That’s about as unoriginal as it comes! Nearly every school uses a variation of it by inserting their own school name or mascot. Is that one okay because it is grandfathered in? Surely Pitt was not the originator.

Comment by gopittgo 09.12.08 @ 1:49 pm

Pitt has some inherent challenges to building a fan base that fills Heinz Field week in and week out:
1. Like it or not Penn State, Notre Dame and WVU all compete for college football fans in the Pittsburgh area…a good portion of Pittsburgh youth attend WVU and Penn State.
2. Pittsburgh area is blessed with many extremely good HS football programs that compete for entertainment dollars and attention.
3. The Steelers have a fanatical fan following that consumes western PA every Sunday…again tapping potential Pitt entertainment dollars
4. A good percentage of Pitt grads leave the area…for good jobs…they may return for a game or two….but not every game
5. To compare Pitts circumstances to larger programs with no pro football competition for fans is not comparing apples to apples….look at he challenges Rutgers, Temple have in attracting fans….winning helps…but Pitt averages around 43,000 fans per game…WVU averages around 58,000 in a stadium that holds 60,000…..Southern Cal averages around 91,000 per game…in a stadium that holds 96,000 so even S. Cal is not selling out every game….even in the golden years of Pitt football…not every game was sold out…Heinz Field has a capacity of 65,000….not a big stadium considering how popular the Steelers are…but who can afford the tickets ?

IMO a 50,000 seat stadium built on the Pitt campus will buzz with excitement game after game…there’s something about a stadium that 90-100% versus a stadium that 70% full…

Winning the big games consistently will help improve the fan base….at least producing an expectation in the fan base that the team is capable of winning every game….will go a long way…that expectation has not been met yet….I’m still not convinced that Wannstadt and Cav know what they’re doing….I’m hopeful…but not convinced….It’s not logos….it’s not the music….but based on the current Heinz Field Location the only remedy is to “just win baby”

does anyone know the song before kickoffs at Pitt Football Games? Catchy tune to it. And the song coming out of the tunnel before the game.
