I didn’t see this in the Spring Practice Guide (PDF), nor anywhere else. I was tipped off by a contact — okay, it’s an old frat brother who works for NFL Films.  And it wasn’t exactly a tip so much as a “why haven’t you posted this” e-mail, you idiot. Details, and that’s not important.

The info I am trying to share is that the Blue-Gold Spring Football game will be aired live on the NFL Network. That’s 6pm on Saturday, April 19. There will be a re-airing again at Midnight.

That’s right, as long as you can watch the NFL Network you can actually see the game on TV. No settling for the grainy and glitchy internet video feed like last year.

The spring game being on the NFL Network is awesome…It’s not part of your post, but I am concerned about the move of Dickerson to TE…Another year, another position for DD! That position is thin for spring due to injuries but it will be loaded in the fall. We are talking about a five star recruit. I just don’t get it. I like Shane Murray a lot, he is a tough, gritty OLB, but I fail to see how his upside is higher than DD. You just can’t teach speed…Was DD really that bad at LB that they have given up on him? If they were going to do this, they should have just left him at WR. He would be a solid starter by this time. Is this just a switch for the spring?

He was that bad. He is a guy that makes things happen with the ball in his hands. He doesn’t have the instincts for defense. I think it will end up being the right move. Plus you can use him in the wildcat formation too.

Great site! Really appreciate the insight and up-dates. Many thanks from the old guard!

Unfortunately Time Warner Cable doesn’t supply the NFL Network in my area. So that won’t do me any good.

You would think that DD would have an easy time beating out a smaller, slower player but it just hasn’t happened. Also with Bynum and Pelusi recovering from surgery. They need to line somebody up at TE.

It’s settled then. I’m calling up Cablevision today and DEMANDING that they add NFL Network to their lineup by April 19, or face the wrath of all Pitt-alumni subscriber(s) living in Brooklyn.

Or, maybe I can go to one of the bars here with DirecTV and ask them to switch one of the TVs from the Yankee game to the Pitt spring game. Yeah, that should be more entertaining. At least until I get my ass kicked.

Try going to the waterfront in Homestead, a few of the local establishments have the NFL network and will gladly allow you to watch the spring game if you purchase an adult beverage or two.

Hang out at the bar and if you are lucky you might run into a few Pitt BB players who frequent the area regularly.

Comment by Shady_f_oWorld_Piece 03.29.08 @ 12:35 pm

You know, instead of going to the Waterfront or a Pittsburgh bar, you could, possibly, go to the game. This is part of the reason other fans make fun of us – we whine about fans not showing up at games while we aren’t there ourselves. Finals for students are the next week but I’ll do my best to get there.

Comment by mjb 03.29.08 @ 2:39 pm

I hope you realise that some pitt fans don’t live in pittsburgh and can’t make it to the games or the bars in pittsburgh.

Comment by shadyforpresident 03.29.08 @ 2:47 pm

Typical pitt fans living close to the burgh, bitch and moan because your cable provider doesn’t carry ESPNU or NFL network and find a place to watch the game. go to the game and help cover the yellow seats that other fans make fun of us about.

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 03.29.08 @ 3:19 pm

If you live in Pittsburgh, go off your fat yinzer asses and go to the game. Do you realize how ridiculous you sound? You are a pathetic ‘fan’ if you go to a bar and watch the game. Now, I’m goin to watch the game on TV but I aint gettin off my fat ass to fly in for this. You Burghers have no excuses.

Comment by mike in tx 03.29.08 @ 4:26 pm

But it might rain…Picksburghers don’t drive in the rain…unless to a STILLER game. WHOOOOOOOOO STILLLEEEERRRSSS!

Comment by geeman2001 03.29.08 @ 6:37 pm

Ok, I’m going to go to the game and try and bring some others to the game. It’ll be my first since I graduated. I have been lazy and I want a better program and after 13-9 I have been filled with pride and hooked on this site.

Worst case, I get a steak at Hyde for my fat arse.

Comment by Freebird 03.29.08 @ 6:50 pm

I’ll guarantee you the traffic at the stadium, even with the construction, will be less of a hassle than the Waterfront on a Saturday night

Comment by wild Bill 03.29.08 @ 9:18 pm

wild Bill,
I’ll guarantee that you wrote that last post while in bed with your girlfriend, i mean sister, just like every saturday night.

I’m as excited about the B/G Game as I have been since DW’s first one.

For those who don’t usually go, it’s fun. If you don’t have parking in the Gold Lots (which I don’t) and you decide to tailgate before (which I do), it’s a taste of the Gilded Life. If you don’t have regular season tix in the sections they allocate (which I don’t), it’s an interesting perspective. And it gives a badly-needed taste of football in the middle of the long offseason.

Comment by geeman2001 03.29.08 @ 9:42 pm

Yeah- I understand if you’re out of the area- but if you go to the WATERFRONT to watch the game that is damn pathetic. The rest of us will be tailgating all day in the gold lots. CANNOT F’ING WAIT.

Comment by Dan35 03.29.08 @ 10:41 pm

I think DD’s move to LB last season was done for two reasons – first because we were very thin at LB and needed some depth, and second to try to find a spot where DD can fit into and flourish. The second didn’t really happen although Murray had a large part in that in playing LB just the way DW and Rhoads wanted him to. This season we are able to put some of our talented rs freshman LBs onto the field and it freed up DD for a move back to offense.

Moving DD to H Back makes sense, but the bottom line here is that not every 5* recruit is a lock to be a 5* college player. Maybe that changes this season (Dickerson has been doing well so far as reported in his receiving efforts), maybe not. But the most important thing is that DD is being treated just like any other player on the roster. Whatever talents he has shown so far (not what fans believe he has, but what he’s shown) are being used to better the team as a whole. I’m way more concerned in how the team fares as opposed to how DD fares.

To me that’s what a good HC does – uses his personnel to best serve the team. If DD is destined to play second string for four years at PITT then that’s how it shakes out. But another perspective is that had DD not shown some talents he would have been put in one position and lived or died at that position, just like some other – less highly hyped – recruits are.

Comment by Reed 03.30.08 @ 5:18 am

I cannot go to the spring game, I am not pathetic, no personal insults please.

Comment by Shady_f_oWorld_Piece 03.30.08 @ 8:09 am

Shady_f_oWorld_Piece,
you are pathetic!!! In the comment above you were suggesting people to go to the waterfront to watch the game instead of giving them shit for not going to the game!!! i bet you’ll be at the waterfront hoping to see a few bball players, pathetic!!!

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 03.30.08 @ 9:40 am

Shady,
If tOSU, tTAMU and tPSU can draw 100k to their spring games, we are loser fans if we don’t even make the effort at showing up in person. That is why we Pitt ‘fans’ are are joke to the rest of the country. Football is not in our blood and our alma mater means nothing. Show up, meet a few old friends, tailgate and have some fun. For those married, it always helps to have a supportive wife. Mine doesn’t understand the big deal. Try to make it. If you’re in town, the wife gives you a free pass for the day or you don’t have to work, there are no good excuses. Burghers and Pitt fans in particular always seem to have an excuse. I do envy these other schools with much better fan bases and support. I should have gone to Penn State…NOT!

Comment by mike in tx 03.30.08 @ 10:01 am

In regards to DD’s 4th position move.

You can’t expect a 5* HS player to become a 5* College player, as Reed mentioned.

Hell, look at Derrick Williams at State Penn. He was ranked above, you guessed it, Darren McFadden in many scouting sites (including rivals.com).

One went on to become a star RB (second all time SEC rusher behind Herschel Walker), and the other wallowed at a University in the middle of nowhere, trying in vain to catch passes from a QB who withdrew his commitment to a much finer institution about 140 miles West. 🙂

FYI,

The Post Gazzette confirms that Blue-Gold Spring Football game will be aired live on the NFL Network.

I’m disappointed that Pitt doesn’t have better national coverage.

The OSU spring games are also televised by TWC in my area. So in additon to a 100k fans at the stadium they also have a very large TV audience. Maybe we would have a larger total fan base if we stop attacking our own fans for the way in which they chose to support the Panthers.

Comment by shadyforpresident 03.30.08 @ 10:38 am

I will not be going to the game. I will be in the Philippines for work. I hope that is a good enough excuse for all you “fans”. My wife, however will be DVRing the game for me.
