Well, I hope the next coach at Providence proves to be as much a patsy for Pitt as Tim Welsh’s Friars. 10 years, and getting lucky with Ryan Gomes to show for it. Even then, they were one-and-done. A team that has no fundamentals. They just shoot. I can’t even respect them.

That said, I always worry. This team did beat UConn in Hartford because they were incredible from outside in that game. Always a fear. Great work on the liveblog Dennis. I have to say, though, if they had upset Pitt, Dennis would have been banned from basketball liveblogging at the very least in games with supposed patsy teams. No, I’m not blaming him for the Rutgers loss, but that would have been an unsettling trend.

Pitt won 82-63, and it was nice to get an easy win after so many stressful ones.
Not much to say about this game.

Pitt was a little lazy to start the game on the perimeter. Providence made them pay. Right away, though, it was clear how sloppy a team Providence is. They can shoot and run up and down. They have no defense and they don’t even pass real well.

In the first half, that style was clearly tempting the Pitt players. Pitt just wanted to run around as well. It is fun, but it meant Pitt got lazy on defense trying to outscore the Friars.

The good in the first half: Pitt was 18-32 (3-8 on 3s). Only 3 turnovers and 13 assists. Shockingly Blair had 0 rebounds in the first half. This was Young’s kind of game with the running.

Pitt also got Providence to commit 8  turnovers — okay, the Friars helped on several.

The bad in the first half: Providence shot 15-26 (5-11 on 3s). Lazy defensive effort. A bit of gambling on steals — because it was more fun — but gave up easy baskets.

In the second half, clearly the team got the message from Coach Dixon that they can play offense, but not at the expense of poor defensive effort. The Panthers went on a 21-4 run to make a 5 point halftime lead, a 22 point walk to the end.

It also helped that Providence was extremely streaky in their 3-point shooting. They were hot for the first 5 minutes and hot for the final 5 minutes. It was that other 30 minutes that killed them. The Friars finished 9-22 on 3s.

Pitt by contrast shot 5-11 on 3s, with Ramon making all 5 on 7 attempts. Between the poor Providence defense and some confidence by Ramon, he looked fantastic. He finished with 15 points, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 turnovers.

Heck, probably the best thing about this game was that it was a confidence booster for the whole team on offense (well, maybe not Gilbert Brown’s perimeter shooting — but even he had good with 4-4 on free throws).

On the post-game interviews. Naturally Dixon wouldn’t give anything about whether Fields will play on Friday at Marquette: “it’s day-to-day.”

Sam Young’s interview amused the hell out of me. He actually cracked a smile. I really don’t know how easy it is to tell when he is pouting, and when it is his normal expression. He seems to have a naturally dour look. Plus his body language generally pushes a sense of discomfort. He kept hunching forward.

I could probably do a lengthy post on how bad a color analyst Mike Jarvis is, but his post-game interview was even worse. In doing some highlights with Young there, Jarvis actually said to Sam Young that he looks just as happy to make a good pass as he is scoring.

Sam Young just looked confused. Like he couldn’t even believe there was a comparison of the two. He didn’t actually answer with a yes to skip past the inane, softball question. He just kind of moved away from the question. Even Young couldn’t buy into that.

Mike Jarvis might be the worst color commentator ever. But is he a worse commentator than coach?

A few weeks ago, maybe even against St. John’s (his old team), Jarvis said that Sam Young is the most improved player in the Big East. But he said, “I don’t know if there is a most improved player award in the Big East, but if there is, it would have to be Sam Young.” Ummm, how long did you coach in this league? And you don’t know if there is an award for most improved player? No wonder you were fired. Well, that and because your players got arrested at Club Erotica while in Pittsburgh.

Very nice win for the Panthers.
I have to agree, Chas, PC is a very poorly coached team. I’m not sure why a team with lesser talent wants to try to get into a scoring contest. They should try to slow it down, and maybe run some semblence of an offense, instead of the chuck-and-duck they apparently use.
McDermott is a good offensive ball-player, but he doesn’t hustle or play any kind of D.
Wannamaker continues to improve – 3 for 4 from the field, 4 assists, 2 boards, and no to’s.
Hope they’re all this easy.

Jamie Dixon has just done a great job with this team on and off the court (Keith Benjamin has over 3.0. Not bad considering how he started). I don’t care whether some team comes after Dixon. Just give him an extenion. He is what an NCAA coach should be.

Along with AP’s Jim O’connell and Hopewise, Kevin McNamara (PC beat writer) is one of the really good writer’s that cover college basketball.

I actually love having really bad commentors when Pitt is blowing out an opponent. These commentors usually lose interest in the game and make an ass of themselves with off topic comments. Its actully funny.

Off topic, I got my football seson ticket renewal form in the mail today. My seats were reduced $50, but my Panther Club donation per seat INCREASED $50, so I’m paying the same for my seats next (this?) year as I did last year. Guess they figured if I paid that much already, I’ll pay it again.

With the decrease in prices, does that mean that the WVU fans will buy up our season tickets to ensure they’ll have a seat for their game, then leave empty seats for the rest of the season?? I wonder if the ticket office can screen out applications from residents in Morgantown and nearby?

Ann – do you have red seats? How many points do you have, and approximately where does that put you (ie, section X, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, etc, of the way back)?

Anybody else post their points and where that gets them seated for football?

Comment by Stuart 02.13.08 @ 4:27 am

I am in row A section 511 and I have no idea how many points I have. They got my point screwed up a few years back and I can’t get them to correct it so I just stopped worring about it.

Great wins last night. The panthers and uno the beagle.

Did everyone notice how Dixon was in the teams face during the timeout when we were up by 11 or 13? My read was that he was imploring them to put this game away and not to relax. I really liked seeing that. I thought it was a great coaching job last night. He made the correct adjustments at the half, as he usually does, and the team executed their defense much better after that. Great win.

so…do we think Fields should and could play this weekend??? thoughts?

Comment by Caroline 02.13.08 @ 11:09 am

I think Fields plays on Friday, maybe not starts though. And I think he should. Marquette’s speedy guards obviously present a problem if his conditioning isn’t up to game-speed, but I think the threat of Fields’ playmaking ability outweighs that. And, of course, I’m hopeful that his conditioning IS where it needs to be. He’s a good shooter, great passer, and I love his d. All that adds up to the fact that I want him on the court if at all possible.

Did anyone get the post card from Pitt…it’s truly great they spell out your name on Heinz field…with the band..obviously it’s all computer generated, but it looks great, and I couldn’t stop laughing after seeing it…I think I’ll have mine framed….

Comment by Marco 02.13.08 @ 11:48 am

Caroline…if Fields can play, I think the Panthers coudl use him. I watched Marquette play someone recently (can’t recall whom), and they showed they could play with a very strong press. It’d be nice to have someone with more sure ball-handling skills.

Comment by colt_convert 02.13.08 @ 11:59 am

Would be great to have Fields for Marquette. Key will be perimeter D and getting the ball into Blair and Young.

Comment by Carmen 02.13.08 @ 12:52 pm

Fields need to shake some rust loose. I would prefer to see him get some minutes here & there till he is ready to start.
Think about it he just started shooting again at practice. It’s asking alot of him to think he’s coming back at the level of play that he went out.

Comment by Tony in Harrisburg 02.13.08 @ 2:05 pm

Stuart,
My seats are in Gold Sec.535,and I don’t know how many points I have, but my rank is 2332.

Marco, the post card with the name spell is great- how about the jersey hanging in the locker between McCoy and McKillop. Sweet!

Comment by Ann 02.13.08 @ 6:14 pm

Stuart, oh- Row H in 535 (3 rows above the upper tier walkway.) I believe Row A would be walking down from the upper tier walkway- is that correct Tony?

Comment by Ann 02.13.08 @ 6:20 pm

Hmm…i think you have around same points as i do, cause i think (going from memory here…not psoitive) i’m 2350 in rank…

I thought the gold donation was 100 per seat in 2006 (and 07) and stayed at 100 per seat this year?

Comment by Stuart 02.13.08 @ 8:26 pm

if they don’t play fields vs marquette, he gets 5 more days of healing, think long term, whats 1 more game?

Comment by Kurt 02.13.08 @ 8:44 pm

Holy crap Stuart- you’re right. I’m in 535 RED, not GOLD. DUH. $50 bucks donation. Thanks for clearing that up. Now I can use the extra 100 bucks to go to one of the away games- or fill my gas tank a couple of times.

Comment by Ann 02.13.08 @ 9:45 pm

ok.. Definitely agree with Colt.. I think he needs to feel that hardwood under his feet and get this team back into the killer mindset they had during the Duke game at MSG. It would’ve been awesome though if he would have come back during a home game though… gotta love the dramatics!
