Delays, delays, delays.

13-9! Love it!

Comment by Panthoor 02.07.08 @ 7:01 pm

That was a great sign.

Comment by Panthoor 02.07.08 @ 7:22 pm

How old is Jamie Smalligan, 43?

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 7:22 pm

Seriously he looks like Toby from the Office.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 7:24 pm

After a slow start, Pitt’s offense is starting to click. Blair is a monster.

Comment by The Prowler 02.07.08 @ 7:28 pm

Very nice steal and dunk by Blair.

Comment by Panthoor 02.07.08 @ 7:28 pm

I know Blair doesn’t put up the points that the top rated freshmen get. But that is because they don’t care about D. The ‘big time’ players score, even if they can’t do anything else. They need to recognize Blair’s rebounding, and that he is among the league leaders in steals. How many centers around get as man steals as Blair?

Comment by The Prowler 02.07.08 @ 7:33 pm

Apart from that one steal/dunk, Blair’s having an awful game.

Effin’ turnovers are killing us. We should be up by 10 right now. Young’s foul trouble isn’t helping, either.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 7:45 pm

Ya after that little run where they looked really good, Pitt cooled off just as fast.

Comment by The Prowler 02.07.08 @ 7:46 pm

Great defense. No offense. Same story. Different day.
On a brighter note. Wannamaker and McGhee have been playing well while the veterans have underperformed.
Would like to see Blair convert inside. He’s got Gray-itis.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.07.08 @ 7:47 pm

The struggles with getting shots as time run out continue…

Comment by The Prowler 02.07.08 @ 7:48 pm

This is a very frustrating game to watch.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 02.07.08 @ 7:49 pm

Yeah obviously this is an anomaly from Blair, but it’s still frustrating as hell.

The good news is, there’s no way he can be this bad in the second half. Plus I imagine Young would get a lot more minutes unless he picks up another foul real quick.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 7:50 pm

I’m not impressed by our play. I’m not impressed by WVU either though. We cannot lose this game.

Comment by Panthoor 02.07.08 @ 7:51 pm

Another big game and Pitt can’t shoot.

They just need to tough it out. Blair had the worst half of his career shooting. Saw coach Dixon in Young’s face, obviously disappointed in Sam’s first half effort.

Comment by Dan 72 02.07.08 @ 7:53 pm

little known stat i have been tracking tonight, sam young 14 min of pouting in first half, my two year old daughter 1 min.

Comment by dc 02.07.08 @ 7:58 pm

Young is a pouter, yes. I would take Cook’s pouting right now as well. I miss him and Fields a lot.

Comment by Panthoor 02.07.08 @ 8:04 pm

¡6-EI

Comment by J.D. 02.07.08 @ 8:04 pm

Great comment dc…I have been noticing it for several games now. Every time Young is questioned on a play by the coaches, he lowers his head and pouts…think Biggs is a little better shooter now anyhow…

Comment by Dan 72 02.07.08 @ 8:05 pm

Jesus Christ this is depressing.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:08 pm

Like, the feel-good “look-what-we-can-do-without-two-key-starters” storyline has run its course now I think, I just want freaking Levance back.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:09 pm

brace yourselves, another second half collapse coming your way

Comment by Rex 02.07.08 @ 8:09 pm

can a 17-0 run be far away?

Comment by dc 02.07.08 @ 8:11 pm

There should be “advantage” in basketball like there is in soccer.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:12 pm

That was Krauser-esque from Gil Brown there.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:14 pm

It was nice to see Bob Huggins before the half cracking jokes about how poor his team is shooting even though they’re 50% from outside the arc.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:21 pm

hey will, the booze always helps huggins losen up in front of the camera so he can bust out a few funnies

Comment by dc 02.07.08 @ 8:26 pm

The Sam Young’s brother thing, is that new? That’s one of those things that I feel like announcers would yammer about every single game, like how Levon Kendall dropped 40 on Team USA blah blah blah, but I haven’t heard that one yet.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:28 pm

These white boys know how to take a dive.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:30 pm

Sam Young taking those baseline jumpers reminds me of those old NBA video games where every player has a “hot spot” and if you shoot it from that particular spot with that particular player you never ever miss.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:40 pm

Great shot of the Swedish Fish under Levance’s chair.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:41 pm

We get it about Fields and Cook ESPN, explain why the hell Blair just picked up a foul.

Comment by Stone 02.07.08 @ 8:43 pm

Congrats ESPN for finally figuring this shit out. Dumbass’.

Comment by Stone 02.07.08 @ 8:45 pm

WHAT A FUCKIGN NIGHTMARE AND A BUNCH MORE BULLSHIT REFFING

PEOPLE THINK I’M FUCKING INSANE – THESE ARE THE WORST FUCKIN REFS EVER.

Comment by Stuart 02.07.08 @ 8:45 pm

Please win this game. please.

Comment by Panthoor 02.07.08 @ 8:46 pm

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.

“Bob Huggins was stroking Joe Alexander”

/shot of Huggins and Alexander in an awkward embrace

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 8:47 pm

We cannot afford to go to .500 in the Big East.

Comment by Stone 02.07.08 @ 8:49 pm

Its hard to win 8 on 5…this will be a miracle to pull out. Two games in a row of AWFUL reffing.

Comment by Stuart 02.07.08 @ 8:51 pm

Comment by Stone 02.07.08 @ 9:04 pm

Woooohooooo!!! beautiful!!

Comment by Pittgirl 02.07.08 @ 9:05 pm

Biggest shot ever taken at the Pete.

Comment by Joey T 02.07.08 @ 9:05 pm

Glad I said we were DOOMED! We stole this game!!
Rather be lucky and good. Maybe the biggest shot of the year…and maybe saved a season,

Cannot get over what a defensive liability Biggs is. He got back screened all night long and has absolutly no defensive sense of space.

Maybe it is all my years of coaching BB, but I have never seen worse refs than tonight and recently at Pitt games. We just got mugged all night.

As the gunner would say though ” we had em all the way”!

Jump off some buildings you snakes!!

Comment by Dan 72 02.07.08 @ 9:11 pm

BIG SHOT RAMON!!!!!!!!

Comment by jumpingjohnnie_class82 02.07.08 @ 9:12 pm

I just finished catching my breath from jumping around my apartment like a retard.

That game was very wierd. West Virginia couldn’t buy a basket inside or a free throw, yet could make threes with small midgets tied to their backs blindfolding them while wearing cinder blocks on their feet.

Pitt, on the other hand, couldn’t make shots from just about anywhere all night, had a lot of calls go against them. Yet still pulled it out.

Thank God for Ron Ramon and for WVU’s inability to make a simple free throw.

Huggins reminds me of a slimey mob boss.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 02.07.08 @ 9:16 pm

.4 seconds left when the ball left his hand. That was pretty close. I never really counted on Ramon hitting the big shots, but that was pretty big. Levance looks like he could have played tonight.

Comment by Todd Gack 02.07.08 @ 9:17 pm

Why did we win this? WVU is merely an average team. But it was fun, a win is better than a loss. Especially an exciting win.

Comment by steve 02.07.08 @ 9:24 pm

great shot by Ramon–but let’s not forget the
penetration and kick-out by Benjamin that gave Ramon a wide open look–and he nailed it–that was a beautiful shot!! Finished 40% from the floor, and 33% from 3 pt range–thought Young should have had the ball more in the last few minutes–but I will take a win with the bad calls (How is Blair called for a foul when the guy is all over his back!!) and a sub-par shooting performance from Blair.

Comment by tph60 02.07.08 @ 9:24 pm

Double R, With Radar! that was my first ever event with a gw 3 pointed! how awesome!

Comment by christopher 02.07.08 @ 9:36 pm

The SICKEST game i ever attened! I was a few rows back in the ZOO for RR’s game winning three! All i can say is “woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo”

haha. sorry. SO PUMPED! HAIL TO PITT!

Comment by Matt D 02.07.08 @ 9:42 pm

Charlie Partridge left for Wisconsin so there’s another position to fill. Trib mentioned that Junk is rejoinng the coaching staff

Comment by Omar, slurp 02.07.08 @ 9:42 pm

That was also my first ever sporting event with a game-winner…I know WVU isn’t the class of the Big East, but if a team plays you tough, it doesn’t matter the school on the front or the name on the back. What matters is the ability to come back under pressure, and that translates into a huge boost for a Panther team that really needed it. Absolutely fantastic win tonight, and it was great to see those alumni get on their feet with the Zoo there at the end- let’s have that happen more, guys.

Comment by merlin 02.07.08 @ 9:44 pm

One of the sickest shots i’ve ever seen. And to stick it to the hoopies is amazing. They just can’t buy a win (literally – those refs were fucking awful – were they related to the 13-9 refs?) against us.

Are we going to win a game the rest of the year by more than single digits?

Ramon is 1-1 now on game winning posessions since field’s been gone.

More bad news (if not mentioned above) – fields won’t be back before louisville. That leaves us 3 more games before he’s back, and 5 with him to get ready for the “run to the finals.”

Comment by Stuart 02.07.08 @ 9:50 pm

Hooray for me… I had to go to work for the second half of the game. Had to work for 1 hour. Got off work just in time for my wife to text me “Ramon makes 3 with 1 second to go. Pitt by 1.” And I missed it.

Glad Ramon hit the big shot though. He needs the confidence. I am pumped that Pitt pulled it out.

Comment by The Prowler 02.07.08 @ 9:51 pm

Exciting win. But there is no reason teams like this are even close come the end. Very tiresome watching Pitt continue not to put anyone away. Seemed like Blair was rushing every shot like he was going against Thabeet again. WVU had no defensive presence. Can’t hit a FT. No post game. A hot and cold 3 pt game and we need a last second 3 to pull it out. It’s time to kick someones ass. Enough of this close, tense, can’t score crap. We’ve had enough of those games over the years to last a lifetime.

Comment by mike t 02.07.08 @ 9:57 pm

Just got back from the Pete, what a game. How about the refs taking two points away from WVU for having the wrong guy shoot two free throws and then the right guy shoots and misses and it cost WVU the game;Huggins was screaming at Alexander the rest of the game for taking the shots. Also Young pouting is sickening, He justs walks around with his head down and crys like a baby.Whats his problem? Ego maniac

Comment by Buzz 02.07.08 @ 9:59 pm

HAIL!!!!

Comment by Tray 02.07.08 @ 10:19 pm

The hoopies will be hittin’ the ‘shine hard tonight! What a dagger right to the heart these past 2 games have been for them! How sweet it is!!! If they weren’t having nightmares about Pitt before (which would be hard to believe 13-9), they are now…

Comment by Mark 02.07.08 @ 10:26 pm

I just got back from a meeting and watched the game on TiVo- I forgot to add extra time and my recording stopped at 9 seconds to go!! AAAHHHHH! So glad we pulled that one out!! Let’s hope that starts us on a roll! Hail to Pitt!

Note to the Zoo- Loved the 13-9 signs!!

Comment by Ann 02.07.08 @ 10:37 pm

Buzz, say what you will about Sam Young, but it’s pretty clear that he just wants to win. The entire team is pretty frustrated right now with the way they’ve gone up-and-down in the last couple of months without Cook and Fields, and tonight was no exception. Young just shows his frustration in a different manner than, say, Blair. But he still gives everything he has on the court, and he made some absolutely MASSIVE shots tonight in the second half. As long as he doesn’t start pulling a Zavackas, his demeanor when he gets yanked for early foul trouble in a game in which we’re struggling offensively should not really be a concern, especially when it doesn’t translate to his effort when he is on the floor. But then again, having been there in person, maybe you saw something that the telecast didn’t show.

Comment by Will 02.07.08 @ 10:39 pm

Whooooooooo…..I haven’t seen a game winner live since Rod Freakin’ Brookins hit one in 1987!

We played like dung most of the way, and got reamed by the officials (again). Amazing feat to win.

Last two possessions were extremely well designed (if the Blair to Benji was indeed designed). Nice and ironic that Dixon outcoached the best two coaches he’s faced this year in the final minute.

Comment by geeman2001 02.07.08 @ 10:42 pm

Graet job by the Pitt bench to be on top of the Alexander foul shots. Dixon is doing a great coaching job this year and deserves a lot of credit for keeping this team in the hunt.

Hail to Pitt

Comment by TMGPanther 02.08.08 @ 12:12 am

That was an incredible win, although I did break a remote and appear to have done something to my wrist, both as a result of slamming them to the floor repeatedly.

Again, incredible win and just freakin’ awesome to see Ramon hit a game winner like that, but general frustration points:

1) Lack of ball movement on offense. Early in the season (admittedly, against lesser teams), that ball was always moving, inside out, quickly, creating openings. Without Fields, the poor passing, particularly into Young and Blair on the box, is a significant problem.

2) Blair getting mugged on every rebound. He goes up, gets the ball, and three hoopies are raking his arms. And and I don’t want to hear a GD word from any Hoopie fans about those free throws taken off the board, because it was pretty freakin’ obvious from the replay they showed about 8 times that it was Blair who got fouled on that play.

3) Young, despite his pouting, was definitely back in the groove in the second half and there is absolutely no excuse for him to have barely touched the ball in those last 4 minutes or so. At 50-45, I hardly recall him touching the ball, yet alone getting a shot. That was very frustrating.

4) Even once Fields comes back, if Ramon, Benjamin, and Brown continue to miss wide-open 3s, we’ll be lucky to make the sweet 16. You cannot open up a lead if you can’t consistently make uncontested shots.

All of that said, they showed some heart and discipline in that last minute and pulled out just an incredible victory over those freakin’ Hoopies. Beautiful.
