I’m going to be limited in watching of this game. I’m DVRing it for closer watching later, but I have to keep an eye on the Cinci-WVU, Memphis-Houston and Kansas-K-State at the same time.

Is this game on any other channel besides ESPN U?

Comment by MaileMan 01.30.08 @ 7:03 pm

Nice start for us. Let’s hope this is a product of the harder practices.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 7:11 pm

I just switched to Verizon Fio’s vs Comcast. Comcast dumped ESPNU and the NFL network, which I now have with Fio’s!

Comment by winedogs 01.30.08 @ 7:14 pm

Yeah, I’m dreading that move (although I’ve thought about it). We have Verizon phone for my wife who works from home and their customer service is THE WORST. We’ve had to call in probably 4-5 times for various technical issues and each time it’s taken us a minimum of 20 minutes (and once almost an hour) to get someone on the phone.

Comment by MaileMan 01.30.08 @ 7:17 pm

This game is truly, very ugly.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 7:26 pm

What is up with all the turnovers?

Comment by mike 01.30.08 @ 7:31 pm

That was a funny timeout for Villanova. Pena walked right into a wall(Blair) and became PITT sandwich meat.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 7:34 pm

Sloppy play but the intensity is certainly there on the defensive end and we’re up by 12.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.30.08 @ 7:37 pm

Georgetown beating St. John’s 27-3. Yikes!

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.30.08 @ 7:38 pm

As the announcer-lady said, we’re letting them hang around. We look gassed.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.30.08 @ 7:42 pm

I don’t know if it’s the Pitt fan in me or what, but we’re up by eight and I feel uneasy…

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.30.08 @ 7:49 pm

Without Reynolds, Villanova is a bad team right now.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 7:49 pm

Horrible first half(for both teams). Might be just a bit prettier than sin.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 7:53 pm

We will lose this game if we keep making empty trips…and turning the ball over.

The good news…very high intensity…

Comment by Dan 72 01.30.08 @ 7:54 pm

definitely an uncomfortable vibe at the pete…

Comment by Greg in Columbia 01.30.08 @ 8:11 pm

Nova in foul trouble now.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 8:16 pm

ramon and co. have to hit some outside shots and pull Nova out from camping inside. If not…we lose…Where is Sam Young???

Comment by Dan 72 01.30.08 @ 8:25 pm

whats going on w/ young and benjamin 5-16?? u gotta be kidding me. let wannamaker and brown shoot, hell can’t do any worse!

Comment by Kurt 01.30.08 @ 8:27 pm

Too many press clippings for Sam!!

Comment by Brass Villenheuva 01.30.08 @ 8:29 pm

I might throw up if we lose this game. We don’t look like a top 25 team at all right now.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 8:33 pm

we’re 3/5th of a top 25 team. Benjamin and Ramon shot way above their heads in the GT game, haven’t repeated it since.

Comment by geeman2001 01.30.08 @ 8:35 pm

shooting an incredible .364 from the field, the 5th grade girls team i coach has a higher percentage. .250 from 3pt land. any chance of driving the lane for layups? Rutgers put on a clinic last saturday, maybe we could learn?

Comment by Kurt 01.30.08 @ 8:36 pm

Hell, Stuart actually went to the game tonight, if they lose he might jump off the cathedral of learning!

Comment by Brass Villenheuva 01.30.08 @ 8:37 pm

why let redding play w/ 4 fouls? drive on him and foul him out!! make him give up the gimme or foul out!!

Comment by Kurt 01.30.08 @ 8:41 pm

what is the latest update? im in NJ and cant watch the game, but i see on the gamecast Ramon has 4 fouls…any imput?

Comment by Drew 01.30.08 @ 8:48 pm

We woke up!

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 8:49 pm

Looks like they did wake up!

Comment by Brass Villenheuva 01.30.08 @ 8:51 pm

YEAH!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 8:51 pm

OK a blowout, they started like shit but they are taking it to nova!

Comment by Brass Villenheuva 01.30.08 @ 8:54 pm

Young produced the ESPN highlight reel of the night there.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 8:56 pm

Our uneven shooting means holding the opponent under 60 is going to be key for every game. That’s classic Pitt D.

Comment by geeman2001 01.30.08 @ 9:09 pm

I can sleep, throw up free now.

Comment by Panthoor 01.30.08 @ 9:10 pm

W is a W…

Comment by John from DC 01.30.08 @ 9:14 pm

Defense + Rebounding= Victory tonight….ugly at times (yes)…but they stepped it at the 10 minute mark of the second half (shooting 42% for game).

Hail to PITT!

Comment by Oregon_Panther 01.30.08 @ 9:14 pm

The stepped up D after going down 1 was nice to see. I was ready to lose my freaking mind. Good W. When Blair is on the floor, this is such a different team.

Serious question: Does Sam Young have a sweaty hands problem? I’ve never seen a player who just loses the ball so frequently for no apparent reason. Don’t know if there are any tennis fans here, but a pretty good Aussie player a few years back, Patrick Rafter, had this terrible sweating problem, particularly with his hands, and was constantly using a towel to keep them dry during points, using powder during games as well. Wonder if Sam needs to keep some freakin’ baby powder in his back pocket?!

Comment by Carmen 01.30.08 @ 10:30 pm

I am a Pitt grad, but currently live in Kansas (and KU is all they ever talk about out here). I also married a Mountaineer. Tonight was one of those rare nights of pure bliss. Pitt comes out of its funk and beats Nova by 12; KU loses to KState; and those hoopies lay the biggest egg in history… 1-22 from three point land.

Comment by The Prowler 01.30.08 @ 11:05 pm

Young tries to dribble the air out of the ball too much and fit in places a 5’10 PG belongs…he’s constantly getting doubled and tripled cause they know he hates to give up the ball, or even pick up his dribble.

Officiating didn’t look too sharp tonight…on one end its called “out of bounds” – the other end same play is a blocking foul…twice Young and Blair got fouled while shooting (still made shots), both hit on their arms, neither called, Dixon bitched at the refs, they refused to take their heads out of their asses.

For the record i missed the entire first half due to someone hitting us on the way to the game. Luckily i got to see the Young dunk – the second he was clear of the Nova player the entire place got on its feet. What a sick play. Other than that i was pretty pissed off sitting there, so not much else to say. I have no sense of the up and down of the game due to not seeing/hearing half of it.

Comment by Stuart 01.31.08 @ 12:23 am

Oh, and F WVU.

Comment by Stuart 01.31.08 @ 12:24 am

If you ask me, Young’s dunk tonight belongs in the top three in Pitt history.

1) “Send it in Jerome (Lane).” You see it ad nauseum whenever ESPN/Raftery are involved in broadcasting a Pitt game. Not a bad thing. I watched the game live as a 13 year-old and still dig seeing it 20 years later.

2) Julius Page’s dunk over Georgetown 7-footer Ruben Boumtje Boumtje in 2000. Sparked the team to a win over then undefeated Georgetown and marked the beginning of Pitt’s current run of success.

3) Sam’s “and one” tomahawk after blocking a three-pointer on other end of the floor with his left hand and taking it all the way to the house on his own. It helped put Nova away and allowed Pitt to avert back-to-back losses to unranked teams at the Pete. The reactions from Young, his teammates and crowd were telling of how emotional this team is in the wake of all that has happened this year.

Comment by Dave in Orlando 01.31.08 @ 1:12 am

off the bball topic but I see Paul Dunn was hired as an assistant O line coach with the Atlanta Falcons wow

Comment by Rex 01.31.08 @ 7:17 am

FYI: Keith Benjamin is doing a chat on ESPN.com at noon.

Comment by matt 01.31.08 @ 8:41 am

Good point, Stuart. At times, Young seems to be doing his best Mike Cook impersonation. If Dixon can get him to dish it on some of those drives, we should get some great open looks.

Comment by Carmen 01.31.08 @ 8:59 am

I’m a big fan of Sam Young. Yes, he does some stupid things and is lackadaisical at times, but he brings so much to the team. He is finally showing some emotion out there and slapping hands, bumping chests with the team. He is truly a unique and special player. Since Fields got hurt he has really tried to be more of a leader. I don’t think him asking for the ball at the end of the Duke game was selfish or unnecessary. He made plays at the end of that game. Without him we are not even a .500 team this year. The kid gets a bad rap because of his personality and honesty with the media, but I truly believe he is a team player and a good kid.

Comment by Omar 01.31.08 @ 9:53 am

I’m not slighting Sam Young. Without him, we’d be struggling to beat anybody. I’m just being hypercritical. He clearly is one of the best players in the conference. This team needs his leadership and his emotion, and I think he’ll continue to provide it, even if he has the occasional hiccup.

Comment by Carmen 01.31.08 @ 10:46 am

Did anyone else notice that Young seemed to have a slight limp en route to his break-away slam? Perhaps this is why he has appeared somewhat lackadaisical in parts of the last few games.

Comment by HbgFrank 01.31.08 @ 12:24 pm

He got his ankled twisted a few plays earlier but stayed in. That had nothing to do with the last few games.

I don’t have a problem calling for the ball – the time i referenced in the Duke game Ramon had to pick up his dribble and couldn’t get the angle to get Young the ball, and Young wouldn’t come help him – Dixon called a TO and Young started bitching at Ramon for sucking and started walking away from the huddle. Fields had to grab him, get his head back in the game, and drag him back to the huddle. And we all saw the sulking down the stretch in the Rutgers game. He has a prety good skill set, but his attitude needs work. This is the opposite of being a “team player.” Benjamin addmitted to the media Dixon will be yelling “bring it back out” and Young will just do what he wants to do because “that’s just him.” Yes, he can be a leader sometimes, but he’s too INCONSISTENT. That’s the problem. I think he’s pretty accomplished in all areas but two – dribbing too much like he’s a PG and losing the ball, and a stable consistent attitude.

Comment by Stuart 01.31.08 @ 12:50 pm

Sam Young may be trying to do his best Mike Cook impersonation, but that is because that is what Jamie Dixon has asked of him. There was a good article in the P-G about it last week (right before his collapse against Rutgers) where Dixon said that he is trying to get him to be Mike Cook because that is what they need from him, not just this year, but next year too since Cook graduates this year.

My assessment of the criticism of Sam Young lately is this: the reaction we are having to him basically having one bad game, that wouldn’t have mattered if it wasn’t against the worst team in the league, is truly evidence of just how far Jamie Dixon has brought this program.

Consider that 99% of teams in the country who lost their starting point guard AND any other starter, let alone one as valuable as Cook, would have their season tanked. We all thought that is what would happen to Pitt as well. Instead, they have played well above what they should be playing at, given they don’t even have any point guard, let alone just using a back up one.

So Pitt is playing out of their mind most of the time, because they theoretically shouldn’t be winning games they are without those two starters. But when they hit a hiccup, a hiccup that for most teams would actually be the rest of the season, but is, miraculously about once every three games for this team, we all stat to panic and cast blame because they have shown us they are better than that.

My point is, the fact that we can get so upset about Pitt looking sloppy here and there, or that we can come down on an amazing player for having an off night, really speaks volumes about the expectations Jamie Dixon has brought to us as fans. When is the last time that we (or any team) has had such high expectations even despite the significant gaps in our current roster due to injuries?

I love what Jamie Dixon has done, and I sure hope he stays around. It is great being able to be optimistic and excited about our team, even in the midst of such hard times.
