Yep, Alexander Decommits (For Now)

I don’t know where else he’s going to look, and I don’t know if he simply decided the numbers weren’t favorable for getting out on the field. Still A.J. Alexander has decided to keep looking some more.

The Panthers didn’t expect their coaching staff changes to have an adverse effect on recruiting, but Alexander had second thoughts after wide receivers coach Aubrey Hill left Friday for the same job at Miami.

Hill wasn’t the primary recruiter for the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Alexander, but he was expected to be his position coach. When Alexander told Pitt coaches he was considering visiting other schools, they warned him that his scholarship offer would be withdrawn if he did.

Pitt already has three receiver recruits in Aliquippa U.S. Army All-American Jonathan Baldwin, Gateway’s Cameron Saddler and Norwin’s Mike Shanahan, and the Panthers also are recruiting Muhlenberg’s Vaughn Carraway.

Keep in mind, that the offer was withdrawn, to Mike Cruz as well. They continued to recruit him and he eventually verballed.
I take the withdrawal to mean Pitt isn’t promising to hold his offer — not that they won’t be willing to accept him unless they get other verbals before he makes up his mind.

He bagged FSU after committing to them.

Anyone have a clue as to why he’s backing off on his commitment right now?…and more importantly, why are Pitt’s coaches such a hot commodity after 3 below average seasons? Or do you think Wanny told them to take a hike based on past job performance (aka Dunn, Rhoads)…any thoughts?

Comment by Marco 01.21.08 @ 10:04 am

you will find out that this is false

Comment by jimmy 01.21.08 @ 10:09 am

I doubt it’s false. It has been reported on Rivals and on the Trib.

Comment by Jon in NOVA 01.21.08 @ 10:34 am

Why so, Jimmy?

Comment by John from DC 01.21.08 @ 10:34 am

The offer to Cruz was never withdrawn.

Comment by Omar 01.21.08 @ 10:37 am

jon its false, just know rivals are not correct

Comment by jimmy 01.21.08 @ 12:41 pm

I guess the Trib is wrong too?

Comment by In My Seat 90 Minutes Before Kickoff 01.21.08 @ 12:59 pm

good guess

Comment by jimmy 01.21.08 @ 1:01 pm

Jimmy,

How do you know? Do you have any sources? Do you know Alexander personally.

Comment by Jon in NOVA 01.21.08 @ 1:02 pm

I just talked to my buddy from FightOnState again and he said Alexander is for certain open again.

He said he is unsure about Pitt now because Hill left. Apparently he told the coaches that he wanted to take some visits so he could have a backup plan in case he didn’t like Hill’s replacement or Pitt didn’t fill the slot before NLI day.

The Pitt coaches said fine but we aren’t going to hold your scholarship open if you take visits to other schools.

I don’t think Pitt is dead yet but it isn’t looking to good. Especially if Pitt doesn’t have Hill’s replacement by Feb. 6th.

Comment by Jon in NOVA 01.21.08 @ 1:40 pm

Jon you are dead on. The coaches didn’t “pull” his scholarship, but they said that they were not going to hold the spot for him. I think that there is more to his looking around than just Coach Hill leaving.

Comment by Rich 01.21.08 @ 1:46 pm

there you have it

Comment by jimmy 01.21.08 @ 1:49 pm

Got ya again!!

Comment by Joe Paterno 01.21.08 @ 1:49 pm

Scout has yet to take him off Pitt’s committs???

Comment by Fcuk Paterno 01.21.08 @ 3:11 pm

There is no way that Hill leaving had anything to do with Alexander renegging. Gattuso was the primary contact and AJ said “I love the way DW recruits”. Hill just wasn’t a big part of the ordeal. I hate to lose the kid because of his speed/athleticism but what are you going to do? When we flip one we are overjoyed…it’s a part of the process.

Comment by DK 01.21.08 @ 6:47 pm

i think the guy on pittsburgh insider had the right line when he said that Pitt had someone higher on their chart, and alexander’s commitment over the internet surprised them and hill’s leaving as the excuse keeps the door open. remember, wanny promised 1-2 surprises, jenkins? tp? one of those stud lb’s? if nothing develops, alexander is a panther!

Comment by Kurt 01.21.08 @ 8:03 pm

Jenkins? TP? They both said that PITT is not it. As much as we would all love that, it is not happening. Jenkins is not even visiting and TP already said he wants to play in front of 100,000+ (PSU, Mich, OSU, etc.) I think it is pretty clear.

I would bet PSU starts recruiting Alexander again. They cant let somebody in their own backyard get stolen.

Comment by Todd Gack 01.21.08 @ 9:35 pm

we get a Florida and Ohio kid as the surprises.

Comment by TexasPanther 01.21.08 @ 9:54 pm

I will agree that the whole “one or two surprises” comment from Coach Wannstedt was almost unnecessarily cryptic. It would be nice to land another linebacker to help to round out the class. At this point, though, other than possibly Gardiner, most of the best players available look to be WR or RB. If that’s the case, and these rankings are certainly no substitute for watching the kids on film, I would consider rolling over a scholarship for next year instead of locking down a player at a position where we have accumulated enough depth.

Also, is there any indication whether the Robinson kid who visited last week would be academically eligible for next season? If not, he seems like he would be a nice Aundre Wright kind of catch after a year at prep school.

Comment by johnny 01.21.08 @ 10:48 pm

watch carraway’s film on rivals. he projects nicely as a safety if he can put on some weight. also good body control as a receiver

Comment by reggie 01.21.08 @ 11:03 pm

the original article on AJ’s commit did say he said Pitt is it and then he smiled. It said he had not been smiling much up till that point. It sounds like he was just stressed out and other coaches keep calling, no doubt. Hopefully he is not afraid of tough competion for PT. And it’s hard to believe Hill’s leaving is that big a deal. DW will probably end up with better replacement coaches. In the end, i hope AJ becomes a Panther, but Pitt is going to be fine either way the way it has shaped up. They will be loaded with talent. Now they just need some experience and continue the confidence building.

Comment by IronManEE68 01.22.08 @ 12:28 am

You know, I could care less about this kid to be totally honest with you.

It won’t break us.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 01.22.08 @ 4:55 am

I could actually see alexander playing CB. Hes 5’10 with 4.3 reported speed. I agree with most though, if we get him great, if not we will be just fine.

Comment by Rex 01.22.08 @ 8:22 am

It would definitely be more concerning if he was a 4-star O-lineman or a QB, but I still hope he ends up coming to Pitt. He has the potential to be a gamebreaker in the return game- we’ve had a pretty consistently average kickoff return game the past couple years

Comment by Dan35 01.22.08 @ 9:52 am

I heard of this kid, think his name is Saddler. Word is he’s pretty good at returning kicks

Comment by derf 01.22.08 @ 10:43 am

I agree with Derf, I can’t wait to see Cam Saddler out there. I feel like he brings an element of not just speed but shiftiness that has been lacking. I hope we keep Alexander too, for what its worth. The more speed the better.

Comment by Maz 01.22.08 @ 11:34 am

Just saw that Pitt hired Tony Wise as OL Coach. Maybe DW will turn him loose on Jenkins to see what happens on recruiting the big fellow……..

Comment by Mtoolmn 01.22.08 @ 2:42 pm

Question for everyone……… Where do schools/head coaches go to look for coaching applicants…….?? Where do assistant coaches go to find out who’s hiring………??

Comment by Mtoolmn 01.22.08 @ 3:12 pm

Oy, Dumbsh!t does it again! How many naked pictures of him can Wise have anyways? F**K WISE!!!!!!
