If there is one team that Pitt has inexplicably struggled against in recent years it’s St. John’s. After that, however, it would have to be Seton Hall. The Pirates are 3-3 against Pitt since 2003.

Seton Hall’s style has just seemed to be one that gives Pitt problems, or Pitt has had some bad injuries. This year, both apply. The Pirates like to pressure full court and are pesky. They are also a streaky shooting team.

So, I’ll be liveblogging, but also a fair amount of pacing and moving around and away from the computer. And drinking. Plenty of drinking.

The broadcast crew is John Sanders and Mike Jarvis. I am continually amazed that the Big East tolerates the employment of Jarvis in color commentary for their conference games. The coach who managed to do grievous longterm harm to one of the original BE teams in the largest media market. The fact that he isn’t a particularly good analyst is yet another strike against him.

Jim Burr is the Ref with Curtis Shaw and William Bush the officials for this game.

2:11: Pitt up 9-2. The Panthers look like they will be able to go inside at will on the Pirates. Seton Hall looks a lot less sure of themselves than they did against Marquette. Not getting defensive stops or set up their pressure hurts them.

Blair does have to remember to occasionally kick it back out if he gets an offensive rebound but moves too far from the basket. He invites the double-team on him and has no good shot. It’s something I’m sure he’ll learn.

Young looks hot. Benjamin with a couple dumb mistakes. A bad pass for a turnover and fastbreak opp for SHU and trying to go 1-3 when he had the ball.

2:24: Biggs early does nothing to improve his standing with most Pitt fans. He gets a rebound but tries to toss it up directly underneath the basket. No room to shoot, easy block. Then runs into Wanamaker on the other end as he doesn’t seem to know where he should be going.

Young definitely seems to be feeling it this afternoon. Blair already has 6 rebounds. Ramon has 3 assists and 0 turnovers. Under 12 minutes to the half, Pitt leads 13-9 with Young going to the foul line.

2:32: Pitt up 18-13 with under 8 minutes. Biggs with a couple nice short jumpers open in the middle of the zone. Benjamin not shooting well today. Seton Hall’s defense really picked up once a couple shots went down. Gave them time to set and it makes a huge difference for them.

2:40: Pitt up 23-19 Blair going to the line for a 1-and-1. 3:39 until halftime. Pitt just entered the bonus. Ramon hit a floater in the lane, which were the first points for any of the Pitt guards. Otherwise all the scoring is from Young, Blair and Biggs.

Neither team is shooting well. Eugene Harvey is the scary player against Pitt to me. A guard who drives to the basket constantly. Weak defender, but provides the Pirates with needed points.

2:50: Pitt up 33-30. Having seen the Pirates’ last two games against UConn and Marquette, I’m not shocked. In both games they were leading at the half, but just couldn’t keep it up.

Laing and Nutter played the full 20 for SHU. Ramon and Young both played 19 minutes.

Young and Laing each have 15 points respectively. After that, Eugene Harvey has 9 points that came late in the 1st half. Otherwise, not much else.

Pitt is little better. Only 3 other players have scored. Blair already has 9 rebounds along with 9 points.
Benjamin is having a horrible game. Very jarring after not only playing well most of the year, but absolutely stepping up the past two games.

3:22: The outside shot had been there for Pitt, but now Pitt is making them. Suddenly Pitt is up by 11 with just over 13 minutes left.

Seton Hall is still struggling with its scoring. Something that has been a noticeable problem the second they started Big East play.

3:33: Seton Hall has already used its last TO with over 8 minutes left. That is going to kill them. They have Laing sitting with an injury he got going for a steal. Pitt is up by 14. Threes raining for Pitt now. Just would like to see Wanamaker make one for his confidence.

Benjamin hot now. Actually the guards in general have looked great this half. A spread court will do that.

3:45: I want to thank Seton Hall for making it look like I know what I’m talking about. I said at the half that the Pirates fade in the second half. Boy, did they. The defense fell off tremendously. Offense was still lousy.

70-54 with 3:42 left and Blair coming to the line after the break.

Sam Young has a career high 25 points. Blair has double (14 boards) double (17 points). Ramon has 11 points and 8 assists — and only 1 turnover.

3:53: Mike Davis was once a Pitt commit, but struggled to finish high school — anywhere. Seton Hall took a chance on the guy (he’s no longer a kid), yet he is still raw and a project. He fouled out in only 10 minutes of time.

4:08: Hysterical. Maurice Polen with his first basket of the season and McGhee gets a block before time expires. An 84-70 win.

22 assists on 28 baskets for Pitt.

Sam Young had 28 points. 4-4 on 3s but 6-12 on FTs — go figure. Blair had 20 points and 14 boards. Tyrell Biggs had 10 rebounds and 8 points.

Ramon had 14 points and 8 assists. Benjamin came alive in the second half and with the free throws in the final seconds finished with 12 points, 6 assists, 3 steals and 5 turnovers.

So since my ISP is on the list of those providing ESPN360, but doesn’t ACTUALLY provide it, and the women’s game is on foxsports970, anyone know where I can get a free audio (or video) live feed of the game?

Looks like the strategy thus far is go to Sam…Blair, after a nice dribble drive penetration got a rest…Biggs in…

Why is blair sitting?

3 bad calls against us so far…the “held ball,” the foul on wannamaker (didn’t touch anyone), and the “offensive foul” on benjamin…other than those it hasn’t been called too poorly…

…good to see they just put blair back in the game…

Comment by Stuart 01.12.08 @ 2:28 pm

Maz…ESPN 360 started about 5-10 minutes late..try now.

Comment by Oregon_Panther 01.12.08 @ 2:30 pm

Looks like Biggs and Benjamin switched shooting this game…i didn’t think benjamins first three was so bad like the douche announcer said (he had brown crashing the boards on the weakside) but damn is he off today…wide open shots, not even close…

Comment by Stuart 01.12.08 @ 2:32 pm

Wow…no travel call sliding across the floor…here we go win the inconsistent reffing…

Comment by Stuart 01.12.08 @ 2:34 pm

Thanks Oregon, unfortunately, I spent several hours on the phone with both ESPN and the cable company over the fall, and their basic response is: “Well, you SHOULD get it. We don’t know why you don’t.”

Comment by Maz 01.12.08 @ 2:37 pm

Ramon is such a defensive liability, its just pathetic

Comment by Ira 01.12.08 @ 2:47 pm

Benjamin had a down half, I expect him to bounce back in the 2nd half

Comment by TMGPanther 01.12.08 @ 2:48 pm

Coach Dixon doing a good job of teaching Pitt to bring the big men up to half court against the press. That being said, the 3/4 press is annoying Pitt no end.

Best way to beat a press is to press back. Bet Dixon wishes he had the horses to do it! !

Watching GT, Marquette and UConn guards on the other channels….we are in BIG trouble against them…

Comment by Dan 72 01.12.08 @ 2:52 pm

Blair almost had a double/double in the first half 9&9. No fouls. He is really helping this team.

Comment by TMGPanther 01.12.08 @ 2:53 pm

Press bothering us a bit, as it’s taking us out of our offense…we appear to be giving them a few too many 5-8 foot jumpers in the paint—need to tighten up this aspect of the D and we’ll be fine–but the Hall also appears well-coached and though arriving late, came ready to play…we need a good start to the second half.

Hail to PITT!

Biggs coming thru bigtime, We need him and McGee to let Blair get some rest. Also were is McGee today? Why hasnt he been playing? Dixon is confusing, McGee must have had a bad practice or something. Pitt with ball movement gets the open shots and cans them. GO PITT big game Monday

Comment by Buzz 01.12.08 @ 3:52 pm

I can’t get 360 on my computer for some reason.

Been following the ESPN Gamecast…. Sam Young is 4 for 4 from three point land? Is that right? Holy balls!

And wait… how the hell did Seton Hall get 9 points in like 60 seconds? God I hate trying to follow ESPN gamecast!

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 01.12.08 @ 3:58 pm

Does anyone know what happened to McGee?

Comment by TMGPanther 01.12.08 @ 4:11 pm

How about our foul shooting, We shot 58percent and 68percent from 3pt. We better get on it if we are going to win the tough ones.

Comment by Buzz 01.12.08 @ 4:12 pm

I was tracking this game online but it looked like Young should have gone over 30 points. He missed some FT’s?.. still a great game from him and Blair. G’town just won their game when Hibbert hit a 3 pointer, shit you not, with 4 seconds left. PITT vs G’Town is going to be nice. We did well today even though we kinda played like poo down the stretch.

Comment by Panthoor 01.12.08 @ 4:13 pm

To busy drinking, why do it if you are not going to do the job right. If you are going to blog a game do it, if not going to be on it all the time just let someone else do it.As for telling us he wouldnt be on all the time,I took that as he wouldnt do all the games.

Comment by Buzz 01.12.08 @ 4:15 pm

What is your deal, Buzz? People have children you know…and husbands and wives. Me, personally, am not offended if he didn’t cover a few minutes. You should be glad that he runs a nice website that we can all come together and speak our minds.

Comment by Panthoor 01.12.08 @ 4:23 pm

Buzz,

Seriously?

I’m the first to concede that sarcasm doesn’t always translate well on the web, so maybe I missed the joke.

I’m sorry your free candy sucked.

I thought a post title that included the word “sporadic” was enough of a clue as to this particular liveblog.

Comment by Chas 01.12.08 @ 4:24 pm

Young got tired, couldn’t hit any FT at the end…

Its a win, we have to win the ones we’re supposed to. Don’t know what else to say today…

Comment by Stuart 01.12.08 @ 4:25 pm

Hibbert has taken 2 threes ever…and made them both. Unreal.

Just refund Buzz the money he paid to view this site and call it a day…

Comment by Stuart 01.12.08 @ 4:28 pm

Sam young just mentioned on the post game show that he wasn’t concentrating on those FT at the end. he said ” I was talking to Dejuan, I need to change that”. One thing about Sam is that he plays so relaxed.

Comment by TMGPanther 01.12.08 @ 4:35 pm

So McGhee gets rewarded with a strong showing at SFU with….11 seconds against the Hall?

I didn’t get to see any of the game, so maybe there was a good reason for it (SH playing small?), but that seems strange.

There’s no question we’re going to NEED McGhee to play some important minutes for us as the season goes on, so why not make it a point of getting him some minutes now when there’s less pressure so he can get experience and get comfortable.

Me no like, Jamie.

Comment by Jeff 01.12.08 @ 4:37 pm

Who was he going to match up against, the fast guards? They weren’t playing anyone big. Unless he’s the focus of your offense like a Gray or a Hibbert, there was just no reason to play him for the sake of playing him. He didn’t match up well.

Comment by Stuart 01.12.08 @ 4:53 pm

McGhee got screwed…he’ll end up transferring…

Comment by yippie skippie 01.12.08 @ 4:54 pm

Relax about McGhee. He is going to get his minutes as Stuart points out this game just didn’t fit with his style of play. I expect to see him in the game on Monday

Comment by TMGPanther 01.12.08 @ 5:12 pm

As do I. He’ll get his minutes where he fits in…

…why doens’t wordpress have an “ignore” feature? True freshman doesn’t get in every game and he’s gonna transfer? I can’t take it anymore…

Comment by Stuart 01.12.08 @ 5:27 pm

Staurt, His handle is “Yippie Skippie”. And then we have Buzz Lightyear weighing in. That says it all right there!

Comment by TMGPanther 01.12.08 @ 5:39 pm

Like I said, I didn’t get to see any of the game, and I don’t know what Seton Hall’s roster looks like this year, so sorry if my comments were off base. It just seemed odd.

Comment by Jeff 01.12.08 @ 6:09 pm

One thing that bothered me was the poor rotation on defense. Harvey was getting to the hoop and nobody was rotating over. I understand that Blair may be a little gun shy because of the recent foul trouble problems, but in the second half at least, with no or just 1 foul, he should have been a little more aggressive on D.

Comment by Carmen 01.12.08 @ 6:16 pm

I will just quote Chas in todays reading, “So I’ll be live blogging, but also a fair amount of pacing and moving around away from the computor, and drinking, plenty of drinking”.So me telling the truth must have hit a sore spot,Ive been on this site for a bunch of years and must have been spoiled. I was just used to better blogging.I bet as the drinking took president the blogging took a back seat to the drinking. So I guess me looking forward to reading a quality blog will have to go somewhere else. So to all that cant take the truth “too bad”, considering it is just my opinion, for whatever that is worth.I personally believe if I were to do something I would want to do it well or not do it at all. Chas started out well but he just must have got busy with other things. Also to you other gentlemen that think because something is free one cant expect a good quality reading,so if I quit reading because the quality goes down hill, then someone else quits reading as well, sooner or later you might be the only ones left reading it.So if you would like a big audience and have good exchange between PITT fans you should want to get better not worse.Sorry Chas just stating the facts.

Comment by Buzz 01.12.08 @ 6:28 pm

wanamaker is terrible. jamie dixon did not play mcghee at all, what a bad display of coaching

Comment by the breast stroke is the best stroke 01.12.08 @ 6:50 pm

I wasn’t one of the people jumping on the McGhee bandwagon after the last game. I think he got a few good looks in close to the basket and he simply took advantage.

That being said…

Jeff is exactly right. In my opinion, you have to get him minutes. Blair plays agressively AND he’s still a freshman. There WILL be another time when he’s not able to stay out of foul trouble. If he and someone like Biggs are BOTH in foul trouble, McGhee’s going to need to play significant minutes. The game was never out of hand really in Pitt’s favor, so I understand that they couldn’t play him a lot. But get him in in spurts…put him in a few minutes at a time and get him about 7-8 minutes a game.

I’m not saying that he’s going to repeat his success the other night - heck, I don’t even know if he’ll have another game like that all year. But chances are we’re going to need him. I hope there was a reason he didn’t play, but given that he got in late, I don’t know if that’s the case.

Comment by Maile Man 01.12.08 @ 7:05 pm

Wannamaker is a freshman and lets his nerves/excitement get the best of him. I’ve seen him play before, he’s much better than what he has shown so far. He just needs to play some more and calm down, he’ll be fine. We’re going to need him, so the more time he gets now, the better.

Comment by Stuart 01.12.08 @ 7:07 pm

Wannamaker had a few nice plays today and a few bad ones. It happens with some freshman. Not every player is going to be able to come in and dominate like Blair. I think he will end up being a very good player. He has excellent speed and athleticism.

Comment by omar 01.12.08 @ 7:33 pm

Keep up the good work Chas and if the criticism gets you down take my dear departed Mom’s advice…Fuck em’ As for the game, I was there and these Panthers have a big heart and mad skills. I thought Ramon did a GREAT job today. His assist to turnover ratio was excellent and he came up with some clutch points as did Benj. The inside game was awesome and dare I say it??? I like our chances against GTown. See u at the game. Go Pitt!!!

I have been reading this blog before Chaz took over and it is different than before, but I still read this one and about 10 others. When Chaz took over this blog,we understood that it would be changing and it has, but it is still entertaining to read. Just suck up what people say good and the bad and strive to get better at what you all do. Chas, I am so ashamed at your efforts to keep us PITT fans in the loop regarding PITT sports. Tighten up, Man! I wouldn’t give a plugged nickle for your work at this point. Oh, belay that, I just remember I don’t anyway…..

He is Buzz’s greatest quote:

“I was just used to better blogging.I bet as the drinking took president the blogging took a back seat to the drinking.”

See, when ‘the drinking took President’ both Bush’s blogging sucked and his judgement went also, hence the War in Iraq.

Comment by Reed 01.13.08 @ 8:33 am

Buzz, this is not Chas’ JOB. He does this for FUN for US for FREE. I ran a PittHoops blog for one season while attending Pitt. I did it well (in my humble opinion), but not nearly as well as Chas does his site. The amount of time it required me to invest was ridiculous. I can’t imagine the time Chas spends working on this site.

If you are a long time reader you will know that Chas has two kids, one of which wasn’t too healthy as a newborn. Chas continued to do his best to blog, while obviously making his family his first priority. That’s commitment.

Before that a basement fire forced Chas and his young family out of their house for a lengthy period of time. He STILL did his best to blog and keep us informed.

Chas putting up a sporadic live blog was his way of posting an open thread, where he could post his thoughts on the game from time to time and we could comment away. To complain about that is nothing but a joke.

If Chas wants to toss back a few drinks on a Saturday (which I actually took as him joking) OR play around this house with his young family (which knowing Chas is a more likely scenario), while posting his thoughts intermittently, than that’s his prerogative. It takes nothing away from this site. Even if it did, we as readers would have ZERO room to complain.

This is the best Pitt site around. Better than the pay sites. Local writers, ESPN writers, etc. will even visit this place from time to time to stay informed on Pitt. I think Chas is doing a plenty good job.

Sure you are welcome to your opinion, but public opinions attacking good people for no reason will not be respected. And neither will you.

Chas, change nothing. Keep up the great work.

Why don’t you hang out with some Nitters on the State Penn blog if this blog isn’t good enough. You can read about what players have been added to the latest police report and speculate about how often Joe Pa dumps a day.

I agree with the general tone of the responders here to Buzz, and particularly enjoy that he’s setting “intellegent presidents.” I don’t think that we should ban anyone, because the comment board is a great forum, and while I often disagree with what people say, it can have value to discuss it. That said, if there ever were a good reason for banning someone, it would be making personal attacks and general whining. Thanks for a great site Chas, and thanks for the liveblog/open forum. There were 10 posts of blogging about game action. That’s one every four minutes, which is generally reasonable. I’d like to also point out that there are timeouts every four minutes of game time. I didn’t look at the posts to see if they corresponded exactly with the media timeouts, but I know that I checked the site approximately every four game minutes, because when there weren’t media timeouts, I was watching the game. I think its pretty reasonable that the blogger would be doing the same. A “sporadic” blog that produced an entry, on average, every time a media timeout occurred? That’s very reasonable. You may not like what the blogger posted, but your argument that it wasn’t enough, in addition to being made with extremely poor spelling and grammar, is baseless.

Chas has built the best Pitt site on the net. The reaction to news, recruiting, and games are better than anything else you’ll get.

I’ve been here a little over a year, and I’m thankful for Chas letting me join him here.
