Excited About Football

I don’t think Pitt has shown up in any type of football rankings in at least a couple years. That’s why when Mark Schlabach ranked us at #22 I got a little more excited for the 2008 season.

22. Pittsburgh The Panthers have reason for optimism after upsetting West Virginia 13-9 in the regular-season finale, a loss that cost the Mountaineers a chance to play for the BCS championship. Dave Wannstedt failed to produce a winning record in his first three seasons as coach of his alma mater, but the Panthers seem ready to turn the corner in 2008. Pitt lost four games by seven points or fewer in 2007. Seven starters are expected back on both offense and defense. Tailback LeSean McCoy ran for 1,328 yards and 14 touchdowns as a freshman, and freshman quarterback Pat Bostick was much improved by season’s end. Receiver Derek Kinder and defensive tackle Gus Mustakas will return from season-ending knee injuries. Linebacker Scott McKillop led the country with 151 tackles and led a defense that showed bite in 2007.

We should remember a few things before we get too pumped up: the 2007 ended less than 24 hours ago, we haven’t even seen what National Signing Day will bring to every team, and of course the injury bug could come out of nowhere and ruin a season in the blink of an eye (see: Pitt hoops). We’re also not entirely sure who’s going to start at QB and whether or not they’ll be competent enough to lead the team.
Still, next year should be a fun time to be a Panther fan.

Which Pat Bostick was he watching?

Keep an eye on: Auburn, Clemson, Illinois, Texas Tech, Pittsburgh.

Bostick will never start another game at Pitt, DW has too many options now.

Bostick might play 2-3 years down the road in mop up duty only. Bostick does not have the mobilty or arm to be in the mix. Face it, he came into a bad situation that really set him back and he was out of shape. He looked lost all year and if Pitt had a legit qb in 2007 they would have won 8 games or more and went to a bowl game.

Look for Pitt to win at lest 9 games next year.

I can’t comment on Bostick’s future ability, neither you nor I are professional scouts/fortune tellers. I think Bostick has a very good chance to be a quality college quarterback in the next 2 years, and its not fair to rate his performance last year, because he played with a sub-par o-line last year and was thrown in the mix as a freshman.

I agree with Justin. Folks need to cut Bostick a break.

ESPN has Pitt ranked as the #2 rebound team for 2008. Only behind ND.

Agree with Des and Justin.

If Pitt is ranked in the top 25 before the season by the media or coaches then there better be an investigation.

Comment by Mark 01.09.08 @ 12:02 pm

Pitt deserves a 22 to 25 ranking based on the criteria they use in pre season polls. Quite frankly pre season polls dont matter one bit anyway. If this team stays healthy there is a lot of reason to be optimistic.

Comment by Rex 01.09.08 @ 12:15 pm

They were 5-7 and next to last in the Big East. They had an offense that ranked as one of the worst in the country and only return 14 starters, which is less than WVU, USF, Rutgers, Cincinnati, and UConn, all teams that finished above them. So how do you figure that they meet that criteria?

Comment by Mark 01.09.08 @ 12:44 pm

Its figured based on the fact that they lost close games, bring back several key veterans lost to injuries, continue to bring in high quality recruits, had the 7th ranked defense in the country, and won a huge game to end their season. Look, obviously pre-season polls don’t mean ANYTHING, but the Panthers will certainly receive votes if everyone stays healthy, and may even crack the top 25. Just because YOU don’t think they should be ranked doesn’t mean others agree with you. I happen to think they should have to earn it too, but that’s an argument for not having polls, because by my estimation, no one has earned a ranking in July. What matters is what you do once the season starts. But don’t be shocked if Pitt’s hanging around the fringe of the top 25. McCoy is a special player, the pieces are in place for a good season, and people like making somewhat surprising picks because if they turn out correct, the prognosticator looks brilliant.

anyone think we have a shot at gettng mallett?

Comment by Scott 01.09.08 @ 2:39 pm

If he’s considering schools like UCLA and Texas A & M, then we definitely have a shot at him. He wants a pro-style offense, which is what he’ll get at PITT. It could be the perfect fit for him, but would definitely result in at least one of the HS verbals faxing their letter of intent to someone else if it were to happen. He would have to sit this year, but then has 3 years of eligibility left. I’m sure PITT is getting after him. He would be a great pick-up.

Comment by Dan35 01.09.08 @ 2:58 pm

I’d take Mallett over Pryor hands down.

Comment by HbgFrank 01.09.08 @ 5:22 pm

Mallet isn’t even close to Pryor, but we aren’t getting either anyway.

Comment by Mark 01.10.08 @ 3:25 pm

Go back to the WVU blogs Mark. You’re annoying
