Congrats to the ‘Eers

Like it or not, the whole conference supremacy crap that goes on forces us to pull for teams that at times we wouldn’t cross the street to spit on them.

Having said that, West Virginia absolutely humiliated the Oklahoma Sooners with a 20 point win, 48-28. I admit it. I was cheering for them. If for no other reason, then the whole Big East bashing crap goes away for another year.
Everyone was picking against them — for good reason.

The only downside, and I heard it near the end of the game, the excuse/revisionist history will be that Pitt beat WVU because Pat White got hurt early in the game. White wasn’t playing well when he got hurt.

Seeing Owen Schmitt  break down on national TV actually moved me. Well, except for the whole, “I love this state,” part

“The only downside, and I heard it near the end of the game, the excuse/revisionist history will be that Pitt beat WVU because Pat White got hurt early in the game. White wasn’t playing well when he got hurt”

The commentator who made that comment obviously didn’t watch the Pitt/WVU, which is why we should believe only half of what you hear.

It actually was nice to see a Big East team win a BCS bowl. I can’t believe how long I’ve been a PITT fan and have never known about this blogsite. Thanks for having it.

Big East in BCS bowls the last 3 seasons – WVU beats Georgia; Louisvulle beats Wake Forest; WVU pounds Oklahoma. Victories over the SEC, the ACC, and the Big 12 – not bad for the Big East.

Hail to Pitt!

Comment by Pitt 2005 01.03.08 @ 12:46 am

Wierd feelings.

I hate WVU, obviously.

But I couldn’t help but feel bad for their players that were abandonned by DickRod and be happy for them when they prevailed in the end.

And the Owen Schmitt thing after the game was, I admit, moving.

So for one night, congratulations WVU.

….and White or no White, WVU wasn’t the better team in the Brawl (White played more than half that game and didn’t do jack squat BTW).

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 01.03.08 @ 1:15 am

I don’t care what anyone says. I know this: we prevented the only national championship they would ever have in their entire history.

I’m glad they won too (i knew they’d roll up half a hundred – you just don’t stop that crap the first time you see it) – i’m just glad the win didn’t come in the NC game. Now we can give a big FU to all the big “least” bashers out there. OU was supposed to be some amazing juggernaut. Not so much.

Now i just need LSU to walk all over the pig eleven and my season will be set.

BTW – I was talking with a graduate assistant today and he told me that there have not been any staff changes and he doesn’t think there will be either, unless someone gets a better job in a different program. But he didn’t think Dunn or anyone else was going to go…take it for whats it worth…

Yea I’ll admit I was pulling for the Mountaineers.

I pull for every Big East team this time of the year.

Right now the we’re 2-2 in Bowls:
Cinci and WVU winning in convincing fashion, while UCONN and South Florida both got beat pretty decisively.

Would be nice to see Rutgers beat Ball State this saturday to finish above .500

The fact that most of the “Know it Alls” in sports dont want to admit is that the BE is a good conference that is getting better. The bowl games are proof positive of that. I also find it interesting that every time one of the big time coaching jobs come up…who gets the call? The BE coaches Schiano, Rodriguez, Kelly, Leavitt, and Petrino jumped to the NFL. For a conference that many label “the worst” they sure want our coaches.

Comment by Rex 01.03.08 @ 7:08 am

You can’t hate WVU more than I do, but I was pulling for them too because they were representing the Big East. I will say that one announcer pissed me off when he said that Pat White was injured in the Pitt game “early in the first quarter”. If I recall, it was late in the second quarter and in the end, as Jimbo stated, he played over half the game. I guess the rest of their team must also have been hurt? Plus, to mention that White missed some of the game, while several of our starters (QB, WR, DT) missed all of the game due to injury is just plain BS.

Comment by HbgFrank 01.03.08 @ 10:29 am

Just in, Stewart was hired by WVU as head coach

Comment by Rex 01.03.08 @ 10:33 am

It’s nice that people always fail to mention the time of possession in the backyard brawl. pitt had the ball for 36 minutes. even if/when white was healthy, he was on the sideline watching pitt’s offense.

Watching WVU last night I didn’t pull for the Mountaineers.

After Pitt beat WVU I heard some idiots rationalize saying, “that’s not good for the conference”.

Well what has the Big East ever done for Pitt football? has it fractured our rivalry against our best in-state competition? has it handcuffed Pitt fans into attending yearly home games against the likes of UConn, Cinci, Temple, Rutgers, etc..? Oh, yeah I forgot… one BE football title, fantastic. 8-4 Pitt ties 4 ways for the BE title, glory days indeed.

I’m sorry, but I am about as big a fan of the Big East as an entity as I am of that cro-magnon guy with the gun for WVU.

It’s constant uncertainty with this league, and the only redeeming factor is that it should be a walk for a school like Pitt or Syracuse or even West Vaginia to go 9+ wins every single year.

If I hate the team I will root against them – it’s as simple as that.

To me, Pitt represents the conference and until Pitt strings together some BE championships I will root against every single BE team past or present.

Comment by ChrisA 01.03.08 @ 12:31 pm

I was pulling for WVU for BE reasons. Without some of the stupid WVU penalties it would have been a 30 point win. Most every team in the BE gave them a better game than OK.
It was nice wearing my PITT shirts around town this week though.
Hate to admit it, but Schmitt would make a great Steeler.

Comment by AZPanther 01.03.08 @ 1:04 pm

It was a wierd feeling watching that game last night- hating a team with a passion and yet wanting them to win…

I couldn’t help but root for WVU for 2 reasons-
1: if WVU got blown away by Oklahoma, right or wrong, Pitt’s win in the brawl gets devalued by the rest of the country.
2: the bullshit bigeast bashing. After USC beat up on Illinois, all the commentators immediately started saying that USC is probably the best team in the nation- that despite 2 losses they should get #1 votes from pollsters (not that the votes even count). You won’t hear that about WVU since they’re in the Big East, even though WVU’s losses were against better competition, and they destroyed a much better team in their BCS bowl game.

That perception can be a killer for Pitt in the future- which is why every Big East win over the Big 12, SEC, etc is welcomed by me.

Now- if we had lost to WVU this year in the brawl, totally different story.

Comment by Dan35 01.03.08 @ 1:13 pm

Funny, I called my friend who is a big OU fan and said that the Big East is better than the Big XII, just to piss him off. His reply? “What’s your conference’s record in bowl games?” If that is the barometer, why doesn’t anyone acknowledge that the Big East was the best conference in the country last year? We were the only undefeated conference in bowls. I think its great that every year we hear excuses. Of course, this year, its because OU lost three key defensive contributors. “Lost” apparently includes “misplaced on their way to arraignments” or something…and of course WVU lost Slaton and ran for about 400 yards. Bottom line: another successful year for the conference. Doubly so because the BCS game was won by our best team, and it wasn’t the national title game, which would’ve ruined everything because as happy as I am to see the BE win the Fiesta Bowl, I would have cried if WVU won the national title. Though I love that we can now all say “If only they’d beaten Pitt….” because everyone said OU was one of the hottest teams and would’ve won a national title game had they gotten into it….and they got absolutely pasted. Well done Pat White. Now go pro.

Comment by Maz 01.03.08 @ 2:02 pm

I didn’t necessarily root for WVU for “Big East” reasons.

The Big East tried to fuck us out of a win in the Brawl. And I really don’t think that the conference is that good. I noticed that WVU can be good or bad, depending on how a game unfolds. This one just unfolded their way. USF, UConn, and Cincy were all pretty mediocre teams (at best) to be honest.

I wasn’t even rooting for them. I don’t like the team or their fans. But for their players, individually, I was happy because after their coach skipping town on them and all, I just felt that those guys kind of deserved it.

But crappy officiating and mediocre teams are all I see when I see the words “Big East”.

Pitt should be a flagship Big East school, and until the Big East’s flagship schools are its best schools, then the Big East isn’t so great.

Comment by Jimbo Covert's my Dad 01.03.08 @ 2:37 pm

A true Pitt fan will never cheer for WVU no matter what. According to ESPN Page 2’s New Rules for College Football Fans to Live By:

“If a team from your conference makes the BCS title game and is a sworn rival, you cannot root for that team. Not now. Not ever. Not even if under duress, gunpoint or waterboarding in an Eastern European black site CIA detention center.”

Well thanks to us they didn’t make that title game, but this rule applies. Never cheer for WVU.

Comment by Partyin' Panther Jr. 01.03.08 @ 3:07 pm

If WVU gets to that game, and represents our conference and gets pasted, and next year the pollsters have to vote for the national championship game again, and Pitt and two other teams like OSU and OU have 1 loss each, what do you think happens?

As dumb as it is, your conference has to have legitimacy in order for you to ever get the nod for the national championship game. That is why OSU played a cupcake schedule and lost a game and is in the NC over a Hawaii team that went undefeated – because the pig televen is viewed as “down a little, but still very very tough.” If WVU gets blown out, that hurts *our* chances for better bowl games in the future, or the NC.

And i don’t give a shit if they won, cause everytime they look at that Fiesta Bowl trophy, they’re going to think “if we only had beaten Pitt….” Fuck em.

Comment by Stuart 01.03.08 @ 3:58 pm

WELL SAID, Stuart.

Comment by Dan35 01.03.08 @ 5:13 pm

OK – Here’s the deal…Wannstedt sold his soul to the devil for the Pitt win over the Snakes!

Thus the injuries to Stull, Fields, Cook….

Comment by Dan 72 01.03.08 @ 5:16 pm

And i love the hire of that guy Stewart for no real reason other than he won a bowl game. I don’t think we at Pitt could have asked for anything better. I don’t see a “Dixon” here either. I see a special teams coach who got handed the keys to a very hard to beat the first time around program, and he put it in cruise control. Now they’re going to have to suffer through him figuring out what to do with none of the real coaches back, when he has to teach the new kids the system in the future, has to recruit…i love it. Back to mediocrity. Time for Pitt to get back to being the elite program in the Big East.

Oh – and i heard Wannstedt is the reason Miami has been awful forever, the reason they’ve had 5 coaches in 5 years, and their coach was fired today.

Comment by Stuart 01.03.08 @ 6:06 pm

atta boy stuart, with wvu down (back to mediocrity), its time for shitt ah, pitt to rise to the top…………

Comment by WHAT_THE_???? 01.04.08 @ 7:57 am

What the hell are you talking about?!

Comment by ChrisA 01.04.08 @ 9:21 am

Does the hiring of Stewart remind anyone of our hiring of Hackett? That didn’t work out too well.

Great point…can you imagine a Michigan fan cheering for Ohio State in the BCS championship?

Comment by colt_convert 01.04.08 @ 11:18 am

That says title game. I’d never cheer for them in the title game. Don’t worry i still booed and “13-9″ed their fans in the bar, but on the inside i wanted them to win a lower tier BCS game…
