November 28, 2007

I have been trying to catch up with reality after a long break away over Thanksgiving. That has meant a bit of neglect here on one of the most important weeks for Pitt football. I’m feeling a bit of guilt, so it’s time to kick off a little hate.

The ‘Eers are in the hunt for going to the BCS game. They benefited from the Big East scheduling them to have 3 of their final 4 games at home. Something most teams in a national title hunt would happily welcome. What team wouldn’t want to come down the final stretch and be in front of a home crowd? Apparently the team with a buckskin-clad mascot and like to stress their hale and hearty constitutions are a wee bit put off by having to play so many games in the cold. Seriously?

WVU athletic officials have brought this matter to the conference’s attention, according to coach Rich Rodriguez. He believes the fans deserve a better shake. “I would have preferred to have more Big East home games during the season in the month of October,” he said a week ago. “I think it’s the second year in a row we’ve had more games in November and December.”

Would he? Really? He would rather have more road games at this point for the comfort of fans? Fans who would otherwise be pissed at not having their team at home very much as they approach heading to the BCS Championship? Personally, while I grudgingly admire the coaching of Rodriguez — developing players for his system, teaching them and becoming the Yoda of the spread option — I think Rodriguez is more than a little bit of a whiner who would be complaining if the team had only one home game in November.

My fellow Fanhouser and unfortunate WVU alum, John Radcliff (who wrote the post linked above) has seen Mountaineer Stadium lose its edge in the last couple years. So, he seems to believe that it is the moneyed alum are responsible for bitching to the WVU officials.

Perhaps. Like I said, Rodriguez is a whiner by nature it seems. Whine, whine, whine.

Coach Rich Rodriguez is not exactly giddy about playing a game amid hunting season.

Not so much deer-hunting season — and a host of West Virginians and Western Pennsylvanians partake in that — but rather the period for tracking down prospective Mountaineers still in high school or junior colleges.

“This is the third year in a row West Virginia has missed a week” of the recruiting period, Rodriguez said yesterday. “When we only have six weeks of a recruiting-contact period, losing a week hurts.”

“I see a lot of people doing it,” he added of a rivalry finale. “I just don’t like playing it in December. Playing it this late, I don’t know if it’s that fun for our fans out there.”

Pathetic. Mountaineer fans not liking the cold. WVU officials complaining about too many home games late in the season. And a coach always complains about something.

Ahhhh. I feel better.

Yes. It must be so very hard trying to attract top recruits when your busy hanging 50 or 60 points on one of your top recruiting rivals in front of tens of thousands of screaming fans on national TV on your way to a national championship game.

I guess Rich is trying to fill the “Douchebag Coach On Pitt’s Schedule” void that JoePa no longer wants to fill.

I’m sorry. Was that needlessly pessimistic about our chances on Saturday? I apologize.

Comment by Brian of Brooklyn 11.28.07 @ 7:12 pm

Just think if the game was played at Heinz Field there still would be more WVU fans than Pitt fans. This game will set the expectations for next season, another losing season.

Chas do you remember your post after the Ohio U loss in 2005 regarding Wanny and the mistake they made hiring him and how we are stuck with him?

Next year is his swan song, he will be long gone and we have to start all over in finding a coach.

Remember Pitt fans, the Wanny game-plan is to allow WVU to score on 10 play drives!

What I’d give for a whiny coach that only wins games, develops quality players, and can recognize talent. He was even bold enough to want to throw Notre Dame out of the Big East because he said they were only using us. Yes, who’d want a coach like that? Certainly not Pitt, we rather have Wanny, instead of Whiny, because we don’t really care to play for a national championship.

Comment by lcole 11.28.07 @ 7:44 pm

If Jamie Dixon left or got fired there would be John Calipari or Sean Miller… Two Excellent coaches that are somehow associated with Pitt. Who is there for football though? I have no idea where we would even start, and no, tom bradley is not a candidate

Comment by Bowz 11.28.07 @ 8:34 pm

theyd go right back to the old search and go after cav and rhoades, and id die alot inside. theyd probably interview tim lewis or sal sunseri and maybe even marty schottenheimer once as well. no looking towards the mac or a lower conference for the young up and coming coach.

Watch out Bowz, a while ago i said that sean miller is the next coach and pitt and got torn a new one.

I’m glad we’re all busy picking out our next coach…

Comment by Stuart 11.28.07 @ 11:16 pm

i actually dont want a new coach (for football or hoops), but the rumors of wanny taking the AD spot have opened up a legit discussion on who his replacement would be.

a competent AD should have SOME kind of contingency plan in place should either of the coaches leave. nothing says that dixon will stay at pitt forever (he almost went to Ariz St), so you have to have a plan and just hope you dont have to use it.

[…] When Did the Mountaineers Become So Whiny? […]

I do think wanny would make one hell of an ad… i mean if the guy could win on the field he would be amazing… he recruits well, got the alumni back atleast for a while, and just got out in the community. Pitt would have every game televised even when they play grambling if wanny was the ad. haha.
Ive said it all over this blog. One more year to prove something

After last weeks 2nd half meltdown on both Defense and Offense….it doesnt’ seem possible that Wanny can inspire and coach this “young inexperienced” team in any situation…especially against WVU who have owned Wanny, Cav and Rhodes the last 2 years…..when you archrival rolls up almost 1100 yds of offense against your ass in the last 2 years….and beats you handily by double digits both times….is there even a rivalry ? the tale of the tape will be how Pitt plays in the 2nd half….if they look lost, confused, apathetic….bottom line if Wanny can’t inspire this bunch of “hard luck”, underachievers to put out a maximum effort against your archrival on National TV….with BCS implications at least for one team…he will never do it……if WVU lays a 60 point beat-down on us….is how can Wanny be extended ?

Comment by deter 11.29.07 @ 8:55 am

ALL: sorry about the grammatical errors in last post…no reflection on PA public education….just a bad taste welling up…thinking about how the Pitt program has fared the last 3 years…..the constant repeat of the same tired excuses, the same tired schemes, the same tired effort and result from the S Fla game…has me thinking there ain’t no corner to turn….just a long thin line of crappy games stretching on to infinity with Wanny and this brain-trust….I’m afraid we are in the midst of Callahan part B….Weis at ND is part C….Ga Tech had enough of Chane Gailey…but it took them 6 years ? hope Pitt doesnt’ take that long…. man what I would give for some real effort and good football from Pitt this weekend….Wanny throw me friggin’ bone that things are getting better…..Cincinatti game was sweet….can you repeat that effort ?

Comment by deter 11.29.07 @ 9:18 am

What a joke. They may be in contention this year, but this is what makes West Virginia well, West Virginia. At this point in time, they may beat us in a football game…but on some many other levels they don’t stack up to Pitt- never will. And after their recent hire on the basketball side…it shames them even more. What a bunch of snakes.

Comment by Eric R 11.29.07 @ 12:04 pm

For the record, Dixon was no where near taking the Ariz St job. He simply leveraged his interest in the job through the media to get more salary from Pitt…Well played coach Dixon, I salute you!

When does possum huntin’ season start?

Comment by Patrick 11.29.07 @ 2:06 pm

Ohio State knew where to start searching for a head coach. They realized that coaches that regularly win at the I-AA level are good fundamental coaches. They also have an eye for talent that goes unnoticed by D-I coaches. Ask Michigan what they think of the Appalachian State’s program. Pitt needs to get out of the box and “discover” a coach with imagination. This good old boys club has keep Pitt from moving forward as a football program long enoungh. Jim Tressel doesn’t seem to be destroying the Ohio State program, and I don’t believe Rich R. was a highly sought after candidate around the country when he showed up at WVU. We need to throw away the mold for hiring head coaches and reinvent a possess that will allow Pitt football the best opportunity to move into the twenty-first century, and that’s not Wannstedt, Rhodes, and Cavanaugh.

Comment by lcole 11.29.07 @ 2:41 pm

Yeah…what he said…who the hell gives coaches 3 years now adays? If you can’t win in 3, you’re terrible. You should be able to win if you have 22 guys on the roster. Fire the coaches! Fire them all! Get the top DIAA coach! Has to be better! He’ll recruit well because this is Pitt and everyone wants to come here – so our DIAA coach will have the top recruits! And he’ll win it all in 2 years! Don’t be stupid people! Fire em all!

Comment by Stuart 11.29.07 @ 3:06 pm

stuart-
I am sold.
seriously, its a difficult situation and i think with his recruiting and such wanny has earned 2008. what is one more year of bad football? who knows, maybe they will surprise us. if not, can him and begin the next 4 years of rebuilding. there are too many teams in college football that expect to be at the top. The SEC has 8 teams every year that could win it all, one of them stumbles a bit and loses a game here and there and the fans go nuts and turn on the coach. you think if urban meyer goes 9-3 the next two seasons he wont be on the hot seat?
it is a game of inches and expectations are unrealistic in the realm of coaching. sometimes you are better off sticking with a guy for years to see what happens. i am not saying i am all for wanny but you have to think long term

Comment by WannStache for AD 11.29.07 @ 3:34 pm

i guess what i am getting at is the constant calling for the head coach really impacts a program negatively, and if you keep switching the instability at coach will never allow it to progress. the best thing that can be done, but likely wont be, is to either implement a more exciting offense for two reasons: get the recruits excited and score a shit ton of points – both necessities in college football. OR get a new offensive coordinator. Wanny must stay – these kids came to Pitt to play for him. If anything, keep him as a figurehead and put more control in the OC and DC. Speaking of DC, if Rhodes were to be fired, would Gatusso be a good replacement? he did a good job at Duquesne and also has the D line playing great.

Comment by WannStache for AD 11.29.07 @ 3:39 pm

It’s not just losing that irrates the fans, but how we lose. Do you positive Wannstedt guys really see an inspired enthusiastic team? I’ve been to every game since Pitt moved to Heinz Field, and I’m still waiting for an emotionally charged team to show up. Two years ago I went to Morgantown and their team and fans were emotionally fired up. Pitt players, as well as Pitt fans, have a bad habit of sleep walking through games. To Shady’s credit, I believe he has done his best job off the field trying to instill some life into an otherwise unemotional group of players. Don’t get me wrong, emotions only go so far, but football is a sport where attitudes and mindsets go along way.

Comment by lcole 11.29.07 @ 4:26 pm

Well, someone better hold the presses because Pitt has gotten dominated the last 2 years by WVU! Wow, WVU had terrible teams both of those years too..I bet the only team they beat was Pitt.

Yeah, Jim Tressel is a good coach and does a good job on the field. I am sure he is a sound fundamentals guy. But he coaches at Ohio State. It is a marquee program with great history and tradition. That is no comparison to Pitt. Just like comparisons of Pete Carroll’s success at USC are no comparison to Wannstedt at USC.

Unemotional group of players – this year? This is far better than it has been. A lot better than Rutherford calling 4 TO’s a game to fix his contacts. This team has the most enthusiasm and team spirit of any recent Pitt team. You went to Morgantown and their fans were fired up because they had a great team – and their fans had no idea what planet they were on.

Comment by Joey D 11.29.07 @ 6:23 pm

Come on, Tressel won big in a cesspool like Youngstown, everyone had to know he had “it.” I screamed for Pitt to hire him after 1996 … and yes I know he would have left us in a heartbeat for OSU. He would have left us as a WINNER though.

Comment by geeman2001 11.29.07 @ 6:58 pm

It’s easy to say everyone knew Tressel had “it” at YSU, but how come Pitt never came knocking? He turned down the dirtballs at Miami, but it didn’t mean he would have turned down Pitt. Of course we like to use the lame duck excuse that Tressel would have left after establishing a Winner. Why do Pitt fans always believe decent coaches will ran at the first good offer from another school. With that fear hanging over our heads may be that’s why we’re stuck with the Wannstedt’s of the world. Know one ever told me who would want Wannstedt after he is finished destroying this program. Maybe high school football will be his next stop. I’m sure someone desperate for a high school coach will be willing to give him the four or five years you Wannstedt supporters cry for everday. I still believe there’s a diamond in the rough coaching at a I-AA program if Pitt would be actually willing to conduct a real coaching search. I’m sure there’s a coach in I-AA similar to Tressel that “Everyone Knows Has IT” just like the geeman says. Well, why don’t we go get him!!

Comment by lcole 11.29.07 @ 11:52 pm

he bitched when it was played during thanksgiving break and the students were home too.
