Just to Pile On the Pain

Navy is trailing the Joe Flacco led Delaware Blue Hens 45-42 midway through the 4th quarter.

And the hits just keep on coming.

UPDATE: Delaware won 59-52 with Flacco throwing for 434 yards, 5 TDs and 0 INT.

Michigan State’s annual meltdown happened today.

Comment by Dennis 10.27.07 @ 3:59 pm

Does anyone really care about what the Blue hens are doing?

Comment by TMG Panther 10.27.07 @ 4:31 pm

Well seeing as they beat a team we couldn’t…

Comment by Dennis 10.27.07 @ 5:27 pm

No offense, but i could care less. Good luck against the App States of the world.

What I’m more concerned about is the fact that UConn is the top team in the big easy…WTF is going on?

Comment by Stuart 10.27.07 @ 5:29 pm

I’d rather lose the way we did with McCoy.

Shady-don’t get down, we still love you.

p.s. who gives a s^&* about Delaware.

Comment by scoocher 10.27.07 @ 5:33 pm

Stuart,

Uconn points out why it is premature to rank teams before the games are played. I didn’t like losing to Uconn but it appears that they may be a good football team. We won’t really know until the season plays out and we see where they end up. I just feel that football parity is upon us and no team surprises me anymore. Miss State beat KY today and MS is supposedly a doormat and KY beat LSU. Go figure. I’m hoping Temple beats PSUcks to prove my point!!!

Comment by TMG Panther 10.27.07 @ 6:16 pm

So Uconn is the top team…in football? In the Big East? What a mess we have here. So the winner of the WVU/Uconn game goes to the BCS game? I can’t believe i’m going to be rooting for WVU…

Comment by Stuart 10.27.07 @ 7:02 pm

Is there a school with uglier girls than that shithole across the state? And those are nice pom-poms the students have there…

Comment by Stuart 10.27.07 @ 8:13 pm

Nobody should be the least bit confused … UConn is NOT a good team. Their ‘success’ in the conference simply underscores the true mediocrity of the Big East (Pitt is not even at that level, I realize). I think that’s the overall trend of D1 college football (leveling of quality) but we’re ahead of the curve, along with the ACC and Big 10 bringing up the rear (pun intended).

Comment by geeman2001 10.27.07 @ 8:31 pm

For those with short memories … Joe Flacco is a transfer from the University of Pittsburgh.

Comment by Panther Exile 10.27.07 @ 9:17 pm

I was watching the game at a place with the sound turned off. Would love to know why Wanny destroyed that water bottle at the end of the first half. Was he that pissed that he had a QB that didn’t just want to run the give-up running place at the end of the half, or was it something else?

Anyway at least I got a free sympathy shot-of-whiskey and a free sympathy pitcher of beer out of the bartender for this. Well, actually there was still one other alum hanging around after the game, so I really only got a free half-a-pitcher of beer out of it.

And P.S. I hate MF’ing UConn more than I hate Penn State.

Comment by Brian of Brooklyn 10.27.07 @ 9:46 pm

I’m 99% positive he was upset because we had the ball with about 50 seconds left. Then, inexplicably, we called timeout with about 25 seconds left instead of either running out the clock OR calling timeout earlier to stop the clock.

The move was just one in many bonehead mistakes made in the long history of coaching mistakes by Pitt. I don’t care which way they leaned, but instead of doing one of two sensible things, they did the only thing that didn’t make sense. Whoever is responsible for that move borders on the insane.

Comment by WERDUN 10.27.07 @ 10:44 pm

I pity the PSU fan that thinks they stole a gem from us(I have met a few that don’t think it anymore). Morelli is a Senior, and is at where Pat Bostick, a Freshman, will be in a few more games. Paterno could have pretty much brought in any 3 star recruit and made him play better.

Anthony has all the athletic gifts….size, a cannon arm and good speed but his brain craps all over his skull every 10-15 minutes. He’s an average QB but the rest of the PSU team is above average in my opinion, very above average. I’ll take Bostick over Morelli any day.

Comment by Panthoor 10.27.07 @ 11:19 pm

Unfortunately Morelli (more like his asshole father) hurt two programs. He and Pinky Johnson combined to destroy Walt Harris and set the stage for the crap we’ve had to endure these last 3 years. If he had stayed put, things would have been a LOT different. Perhaps Harris stays and (finally) we’d have dumped the worthless Rhoads and brought in a legitimate DC.

As for Morelli, regardless of who we’d have coaching now, at a minimum he’d have gotten legitimate QB coaching here, and would have been our experienced, smarter starting QB this season and we wouldn’t have seen the inexperienced incompetence of the first month and a half. Meanwhile, the PSU program almost certainly would have had a better fit at QB. Morelli has been about as successful there as Dan Marino would have been (of course, Paterno was going to make him a LB, though).

Comment by geeman2001 10.27.07 @ 11:25 pm

Since we’re on the topic of other teams… Tom “Backstabber” O’Brien must feel like a complete idiot for leaving chestnut hill huh? I still think BC will lose this season but they are sitting pretty right now with a Heisman type QB.

BTW, good for Flacco, even though it’s Delaware and I think he’s a bit of a baby.

Comment by Panthoor 10.27.07 @ 11:27 pm

Nobody should blame a kid for believing in his own ability and recognizing that he had been slotted as a permanent backup here. It’s funny to me when fans don’t blink twice when a ratfink coach making millions flips the bird and violates a legitimate legal contract to leave, whereas when a kid making absolutely nothing (beyond tuition) does so, he’s villified.

Comment by geeman2001 10.27.07 @ 11:31 pm

PSU….awful as usual. At least they embarassed themselves on national TV. How many times do you have to start that awful retard before you realize he’ll never be anything but a loser?

And I am truly glad he did not come here. We’d be suffering through that crap with a senior QB instead of rebuilding. I haven’t even seen Bostick throw a pick one single time this season that was as goddamn awful as the one thrown by Moroni – and that’s comparing a senior to a freshman.

The only thing that pisses me off is that he committed here in the first place and screwed up our recruiting class. Fuck him for that.

He definitely needs more practice the rest of this year – repeat after me Morelli – “you want fries with that?” The closest you’ll ever get to the NFL is if a couple players come in and order a number 4, supersized, bitch.

Comment by Stuart 10.27.07 @ 11:58 pm

Basically, my entire family other than myself and my sister attended Delaware, and UD was the first college FB game I ever attended, so I like to see any Delaware news- thanks for asking. I do think UD>Navy is noteworthy because no matter what you think about this team we have here, Flacco would have started this year fpr Pitt, no question about it. We prob. wouldn’t have had to endure any of the qb debacle this year and we could have redshirted Bostick and brought him along better than the recent qb trial by fire.

Good for Delaware, anyway. If they make the playoffs I’m travelling to see them.

Comment by ChrisA 10.28.07 @ 9:44 am

Walt Harris wouldn’t have gotten Bostick, McCoy, or anyone to come here. So let’s not kid ourselves. Walt didn’t win 7 games until his 4th year and didn’t win more than that until year 6. Wannestedt will have no problem achieve those meager goals so let’s stop the stupid wish we still had Walt crap. Did anyone see his Stanford teams? 6-17.

Comment by ryan 10.28.07 @ 12:06 pm

Flacco has been getting nods lately. Last week NFL Draft expert Mike Mayock, during College Football Now (on NFL network), commented on Flacco climbing the draft boards with his play this year. To get that recognition being at that school is amazing. However, to compare him to our freshman QB is inapropriate. I think Bostick mat have the ability to compare to Flacco when he is a senior. Lets wait and see.

Comment by Joe 10.28.07 @ 12:33 pm

I agree with Ryan. Walt would never have ventured into central PA to get these kids Dave got. Not to mention we all know how Walt recruited in the Pittsburgh area alone. And with the Big East getting broken up, a lot of the Florida connections went by the wayside as well. I think we are in a much better position now with Dave then we would be with Walt in terms of future prospects. Walt did a decent job for his years, it came to an end and it was time to move on. I thank him for some of the things he did but I don’t want him back nor do I spend much time pondering that. In two years- I think you will see Pitt begin to reach bowl games again. The coaching staff has had some growing pains of its own (i.e. dumb founded play calling, up and down defense)…but it will work out in the end. You can’t deny Dave’s passion to get talented kids to come to Pitt nor his passion to win. I think one of the biggest things Pitt needs right now is team leaders. Took that for granted from Blades and Palko. We’ve all been hoping things would be turned around in just a few years, but in reality the turning point won’t *start* happening until next season. Just have to be a little more patient than anticipated.

Comment by Eric R 10.28.07 @ 12:49 pm

Bosticks lack of foot speed needs work…but really with the alternative at QB we presenlty have available….do you really want Bostick exposing himself to possible injury by running….I wouldn’t be suprised if Cav has instructed him not to run under any circumstances…face it to help the O develop….we need Bostick to stay healthy…

Comment by deter 10.28.07 @ 3:33 pm

I think Bostick really struggled with the conditioning aspect of his summer. Keep in mind, he missed a bit of camp. I would expect him to lose 15 pounds at least in the offseason and get a lot quicker. Is he ever going to be a runner? No, but I think he has good pocket presence and with a little quickness, he could be a bit like Big Ben in his ability to duck out of the pocket to get lose to throw a pass. Just at a different level of athleticism.

What’s your point. It’s 100% on Flacco for transferring there. If Morelli doesn’t go to PSU, maybe he’s starting here. If Brohm decided to go to Pitt instead of LU, maybe he’s starting here. If my dog went to Pitt instead of licking its own asshole, maybe it’s starting at Pitt. No one ran his ass out of town. He made his own decision to leave, this is all irrelevant.

On the Bostick “slowness” – scout has him listed with a 4.80 40…that’s not *that* slow, and right in the range of most QBs out there. It’s only 3 yards behind a 4.4 40. Why does it seem like he runs a 5.5? Just made up numbers coming out of HS?

Comment by Stuart 10.28.07 @ 4:41 pm

I wanted Harris to leave as well after the affairs that transgressed after the Johnson/Morelli debacle, extending to the fiasco about Walt’s agent, finally the disgrace of the Fiesta Bowl (which was mostly Rhoads’ fault).

However, I did not sign on for the garbage we have now. I’m glad we beat Cinci and did OK against Louisville (though let me remind everyone we never had the lead and Louisville would have likely pounded us in OT). But the rest of the season has been a disgrace. Pitt football was at least Top 25 quality 5 years ago but is near the bottom in national perception and quality now.

I don’t necessarily blame Wannstedt at all for this. But I never thought he was the ideal candidate for this program. I wanted an aggressive national push for the best candidate. Our lazy incompetent administration did nothing of the sort. If not for the pure luck of Wannstedt changing his mind in the 11th hour, Rhoads, who is excruciatingly awful, a retarded train wreck and fraud, would most certainly would have been named our head coach. So as bad as we are now we probably would be Duke quality, so maybe I should at least look on that bright side.

Sorry, with so many programs doing well, and we struggle, I’m extremely bitter right now.

Comment by geeman2001 10.28.07 @ 5:23 pm

I heard Wannstedt is the reason Miami is 0-8 this season.

I don’t think we could have found a canidate that would have improved recruiting as well as he did. Granted, they have been slow to adapt to the college game, but they are at least showing signs of adapting. Yes, Rhoads is a joke and needs to go – he’s had too many chances (unless he holds every team for the rest of the year to under 2 scores). They (both the team and coaches) seem to be improving. Let this year play out, change some assistants, and then let the next two years play out to see what they can do with this talent. Changing coaches every 3 years when you don’t do well isn’t going to get anyone anywhere.

Comment by Stuart 10.28.07 @ 5:56 pm

I agree with Eric R. ; Wanny is really putting is heart into selling PITT… he needs more time and we will be proud.

Comment by hailpitt 10.28.07 @ 6:05 pm

can someone tell me how is Uconn in 1st place in the big easy and ranked in the BCS standings.. how can they slingshot pass pitt ? what are they doing that we aren’t? there is no way Uconn is recruiting better players.

Comment by panthers 10.28.07 @ 6:17 pm

Paying refs? They have had 2 wins HANDED to them, there is no disputing this. Just got lucky. We have Pitt’s luck.

Comment by Stuart 10.28.07 @ 7:54 pm

Guys, losing to louisville by 7 is no moral victory, recruit who you want Wanny just can’t coach. Face it, they made a horrible mistake screwing Walt, at least he won, how many bowl games did he take Pitt to in his tenure?

Nexy year is Wannys last year, face it there is going to be no bowl game this year, and guess what no bowl game next year means no more WANNY!!!

Pitts coaching is the blind leading the blind!

Comment by dr jarvik 10.28.07 @ 8:49 pm

Stuart,
I couldn’t agree more. DW needs time to build a “program”.

Comment by TMG Panther 10.28.07 @ 8:53 pm

Wannstedt should definitely stay, I agree with all who applaud him for promoting the university … he does a great job of that, no question. But I think most of us would agree that next year is his last chance. This off-season he’d better admit that some changes need made. Most importantly, getting rid of Rhoads (or getting rid of the passive defensive philosophy itself, if it isn’t purely Rhoads). I like the things that happened in the 2nd half offensively yesterday, let’s hope we see more of it through the entire game in future weeks.

Comment by geeman2001 10.28.07 @ 9:32 pm

Stuart What’s your point.

I made my point.
