The Pittsburgh Media Is…

Yesterday at the end of the post about Clermond having charges against him dropped, I was going to rip the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They were the first media outlet to report the story of his arrest back on July 24 when Paul Zeise broke the story on the P-G’s website. And when it was published online, they put it in REALLY BIG LETTERS at the top of the page. So I was a little curious as to why it took them so long to put up the story of his release from the charges. Does the Post-Gazette have some sort of anti-Pitt agenda? (Gasp!)

I decided not to bring it up yesterday, and today I learned that it might have just been a product of a bad week for Mr. Zeise.

In introducing the topic, Pompeani said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is “probably going to suspend [Vick] for the rest of the season, the whole year. Is he right to do that given the fact this guy has not been convicted of anything?” Alexander answered: “Absolutely. When you’re indicted by the federal government, you’re going down. Since 1987 they have a 92 percent conviction rate.”

Zeise took an opposing view. “It’s really a sad day in this country when somehow … Michael Vick would have been better off raping a woman if you look at the outcry of what happened. Had he done that, he probably would have been suspended for four games and he’d be back on the field. But because this has become a political issue, all of a sudden the commissioner has lost his stomach for it.”

I don’t know what the best part of the article is: Zeise’s comments or the fact that the apology from the newspaper was penned by the lovable Bob Smizik.

This fails to explain why Pitt coverage has always been a little bit behind from the P-G. Meanwhile, Kevin Gorman over at the Trib does an excellent job and keeps from being a complete homer.

It figures. Zeise is one of the few sports journalists in this city worth a damn. What he said was 1000000000% true … sports fans (predominantly male) like dogs and are (rightfully) appalled by dog fighting, so Mike Vick looks bad. Plus, he’s not a STEELER, so it’s carte blanche to hate him. However, many many more stereotype the women that hang out with athletes as … well, everyone knows the word. If Vick had been arrested for sexually assaulting a woman, or knocking around his wife or girlfriend, he likely wouldn’t even missed as many as 4 games like Zeise suggested. And if he were a STEELER, such as Ben Roethlisberger, the fans would not only have exonerated him, but would have turned on the woman if she dared press charges.

Zeise should be appalled that his freeedom of speech was violated like it was, and that his gutless Nit editor failed to support him. Like with John Clayton, Mike DeCourcy and others, the Nit-loving, Steeler-fawning geezers here will run him out of town. The good news (for him) is he’s almost certain to get a better job.

I have to feel for Zeise. He was probably looking at the Duke Lacrosse scandal and how its treatment in the media seems to be the same (as if the media learned nothing from Mike Nifong and is also aware of the US Attorney scandal within the justice department). I’ll agree with him on that. However, once Tony Taylor turned state’s evidence, that was the end for me. Vick is going away for a long time.

As for the Trib, there’s a reason why I call it “Pirates Pravda”.

The front page of the Post-Gazette website has a headline reading “Pitt’s Fields suspended for season.”

…Elijah Fields.

Good Lord, did that give me a scare.

The problem with Zeise’s argument is that the dogfighting ring was not a one time offense. Committing domestic violence or even sexual assualt can happen to a person as one bad mistake that harms an otherwise clean background.

On the other hand, organizing, financing, and supporting a dogfighting ring is not a one time offense, it is ORGANIZED CRIME. It is a conscious recognition of committing a crime EVERY DAY of your life through his actions of running this ring. He knew what he was doing and he continued to do so repeatedly and without concern for the wellbeing of the dogs’ health or other people’s illegal gambling.

That to me is what makes it worse than a single assualt charge against a female. Now, alot of americans are upset because of just the dog aspect, as Zeise alleges, but regardless I think America has the right to be upset.

Also, I didnt hear anything about Zeise getting fired from the Post-Gazette, only that he will no longer appear on the KDKA sports showdown on Sunday nights.

I notice the Post-Gazette was right on top of that little nugget of news.

That is just rough. Elijah was really set to be our defensive playmaker. That’s huge blow to our D. Honestly, I had heard that he was looking good and was most likely going to be eligible. Kudos for Wanny for laying down the hammer, but man, I hope this kid gets his head on straight because he is a phenomenal talent.

Comment by Ryan 07.31.07 @ 10:52 pm

I don’t remember fields doing anything last year for him to be considered a phenomenal talent. I will admit that he looks to have a lot of potential, but I think a lot of the hype everyone gives him comes for the one play he made in the spring game.

By the way, you can stick a fork in his career now. He is done, you just don’t hear of players doing anything after getting suspended for a whole season.

He made several plays in the spring game.

I would like to put Mr. Zeise on one of Vick’s “rape stands” and let HIM know what it is to be pinned down and violated enduring excruiating pain and humiliation. And perhaps all of you above who just don’t understand what the fuss is all about should experience that, too. Then you might edit your posts having lived the horror of rape.

P.S. For all you know-it-alls, he was really making a comparision to Kobe Bryant…oh but wait, he (like OJ) was innocent, too. Yeah, they’re ALL innocent.

Comment by A woman in Dallas 08.02.07 @ 8:35 am

Dallas Woman – The point Zeise made is that people in the US seem to care more about dogs than humans. He did not condone rape in any way – he was making a point on the state of our society. I’m sure you hear the word “rape” and jump all over whoever used it in a sentence that didn’t involve the words “is bad,” but you really need to go back and re-read what he said, and comprehend it before you insult the man. As a matter of fact, he is saying rape is worse than dog torturing (or at least as bad) but the rest of the US doesn’t see it that way (most think dog torture is worse). Calm down and read it slowly. Then apologize to the man.

Comment by Stuart 08.02.07 @ 10:43 pm

[…] Then Paul Zeise got in trouble for comments he made regarding Michael Vick, dog fighting allegations and suggesting that Vick would have been better off committing rape rather than doing dog fighting. Rape was apparently the wrong crime to compare. Everything else is acceptable. Plus, Vick could have been accused of murdering a stripper, blowing up a shopping mall or funneling his Nike money to Al Qaeda, and people wouldn’t have been even 1% as outraged as they are about the dogfighting allegations. You can get away with just about anything these days; just don’t tick off dog lovers. […]

I think the lady who posted above is preaching to a choir of like-thinkers. We not only believe Vick deserves major punishment for his dog-fighting crime, but would ALSO advocate severe punishment for any kind of assault on a woman. Myself, having a young daughter, I frankly think any player even suspected of abusing a woman in any way should be withheld from competition, and then kicked out if found guilty. Harsh? Not in my mind. Sports teams aren’t democracies; playing football is a privilege not a right. Yes, I extend that to PITT players too; I made similar statements when Keith Benjamin was arrested. He has since been exonerated; Until then, my position was that he should be suspended from the basketball team. Anything less sets a horrible example.

However, the NFL (and certain college teams, such as one to the northeast of Pittsburgh) have long demonstrated their contempt for crimes against women by yawning at domestic abuse and sexual assault cases. FOR GOD SAKE, MICHAEL VICK HAS BEEN IN A HIGH PROFILE CASE FOR GIVING A WOMAN HERPES. It affected nothing! He got huge money from the NFL and all of his sponsors. Nearly every other week around the league you’ll read of other players arrested for various atrocities against their girlfriends, wives, etc. Nothing happens to them.

The NFL, NCAA and big sponsors like Nike, et al are all totally driven by $$$, so they make the market analysis that their fanbase won’t care, at least to the extent that they want to jeopardize their favorite team’s chances by banning their star player.
