Clermond Let Off The Hook

Kevin Gorman at the Trib is reporting that Joe Clermond had marijuana possession charges against him withdrawn. Police found the a small amount of the drug in a car Clermond was riding in on the way home from a concert at Mellon Arena. Apparently there was enough reason to believe Clermond had nothing to do with it. Clermond’s release from the charges will help him avoid what could have been a possible suspension.

Not really much else to say on the topic — hopefully, for Clermond’s sake as a young man, people can simply forget about this as though it never happened. He was cleared quickly enough that we can easily move forward from the whole situation.

This should have been a non-story to begin with. A college age group of kids in possession of a small amount of marijuana? The horror! The very foundation of our community trembles!

Comment by Jeff 07.30.07 @ 8:11 pm

I still say this kid should be punished…a one game suspension or have Wanny play him as a non-starter first two games…even though the Pot might not have been his, and regardless of what I think of marijuana laws in this state, it is still illegal and I simply don’t believe he wasn’t aware that his buddies had some…bottom line, he probably new yet still decided to hang with the boys….he’s lucky it didn’t bite him in the ass more.

Comment by Marco 07.30.07 @ 8:33 pm

What’s he supposed to? Walk home from the Arena?

Comment by Jeff 07.30.07 @ 9:18 pm

I agree. He needs some punishment somehow. The other kids need to understand that it’s not a good decision to put yourself in that position. I would think he’d have an idea those dudes were toking up and should try to avoid that type of crap.

You’d think we could handle the first two teams without Clermond if we needed to.

Comment by Ryan 07.30.07 @ 9:49 pm

You still have no idea what happened as far as why Joe was leaving the car. Did he leave because a dude lit one up? Did he see the cops coming? We have no idea. I’m sure the coaches now know the deal, as I believe Joe ask to take a drug test and passed.

Comment by mook 07.30.07 @ 10:18 pm

Mook, I\’ve also heard that Clermond submitted himself to a drug test for the coaches and passed. I didn\’t post it though because it hasn\’t (and probably will never be) verified.

Comment by Dennis 07.30.07 @ 10:49 pm

No matter what, the local Nits and news media (one and the same thing) will spin it that Clermond is a pot head and Wannstedt has no discipline (not to mention that Pittsburgh is a ghetto town).

Comment by geeman2001 07.31.07 @ 12:03 am

Right, and they will remind us that misdemeanor posession is the same as felony burglary and assault. Oh wait, they’ll also say he got “let off” just like the gang that was in the apartment. Because being in a car with someone smoking pot is the same as getting a phone call, joining a gang and breaking and entering. I forgot.

Comment by Stuart 07.31.07 @ 1:34 am

I believe some sort of punishment is in order, I dont think he should miss any regular season playing time. Mostly just to send a message that no matter who you are and how minor it may seem, players have to be smart enough to stay out of bad situations or jeopardize their future and scholarship. DW has been tough on his players and thats a good thing – we dont want a state penn in the burgh. What if someone had heroin or coc in the car, all of the sudden this is a much bigger deal, regardless of what Clermond did or didnt do.

Comment by Rex 07.31.07 @ 7:18 am

Nothing like being told how we’re going to spin something. Since you already know what I’m going to say, Stuart, why should I say it? But I will anyhow. Allow me to use your logic against you:

Clermond is innocent because he happened to be in the same place where a crime was committed, but he claims he wasn’t involved. Well, I guess if ANY ONE of the PSU guys are guilty (*if*), all the others could be innocent. After all, they were just simply…there, right? I guess they could just be guilty of associating themselves with the wrong guy. But please, tell me why (for some reason) it’s different this time. Or maybe, just maybe, we can let the judicial system perform their job and stop harping about it every 3 seconds before we even know the outcome. Either way, you need a new schtick dude, this one is getting kinda old.

Perhaps the coaches should not let him be a team captain. This would send a clear signal to the rest of the team, and at the same time throwing a bone to those in the media, fan base, and public who have doubts.

Nick DiLilo has de commited from PITT…he is going to an Ohio school…from rivals.com

Comment by Jared CAmpbell 07.31.07 @ 10:22 am

Dillilo will play for the OSU, who offered a scholorship in the last few days.

Comment by HbgFrank 07.31.07 @ 12:38 pm

no big deal, how many tight ends do we have? Give him a few more weeks he’ll be playing at Michigan.

Can you perform a test on the PSU players’ fists to see if they hit anyone? You can do a drug test to see if you pass, though, right? Clermond asked for, and passed, a drug test. Well, that theory is blown out of the water.

“Since you already know what I’m going to say, Stuart, why should I say it?”

The funny thing is you responded, assuming he was talking about you. That doesn’t seem strange to you? Did you get to work at 9:00, log onto your computer, go right to this site, and respond at 9:10? Get a life, dude. You aren’t a Pitt fan, yet you are on here more than most Pitt fans.

Comment by mook 07.31.07 @ 1:38 pm

you never can put a good spin on losing a 4 star athlete…this upcoming recruiting class is not looking so hot…hopefully Dave can pull a couple more rabbits out of his hat…

Comment by Marco 07.31.07 @ 1:42 pm

Yes Mook, you can peform a test. It’s called the “put the witness on the stand and see if he can identify the assailant” test. Once again, the Pitt faithful proving that assumptions only matter towards “that other team out East.”

As for me being a loser, meh. If that’s what you think. I had actually been up long before then, so no, I can’t claim this is the be-all end-all of my life. And yes, as a PSU fan, I know he was addressing me.

Man, why is it you guys just can’t accept viewpoints from “outsiders?” Pretty shallow.

Comment by Lil' Stewie 07.31.07 @ 3:03 pm

Stuart, you said you wanted “Penn State justice”. You got better than that. You got “Pitt Justice” which means basically nothing. Congratulations. Now shut up!

Comment by blahblahblah 07.31.07 @ 4:18 pm

I dont know about a rabbit, but he may be able to pull Collier, Baldwin, Hubie Graham, Ryan Williams, Reggie Ellis, and Marcus Sales out of his hat. Those are all four star guys that have very high-high interest in our fine university.

Comment by Josh 07.31.07 @ 5:08 pm

Whoever says Clermond should be punished has no grip on reality.

Comment by Brian 07.31.07 @ 5:13 pm

I can’t wait until joepa goes.

Comment by Chrisa 07.31.07 @ 5:18 pm

Would a Senator hang out with his crack pipe friends? Of course not. It has happened but that’s not what a leader does. If Clermond knew that they possibly had drugs in the car then he should have never gotten in. If he did not know then he did the right thing by leaving or asking them to stop because of his position. I think Clermond should be punished but not by having him miss any games. I’m sure Wanny and Buddy will find a way to make sure that the image of a leader is restored through pain and buckets of puke. I mean do we really want a guy like Ricky Williams screwing with the incoming freshmen? I know Clermond did not smoke it and I’m sure he wanted out of the car the second he saw it but you need to choose your friends wisely because you’re a leader of a team and represent an institution bigger than who you are.

As for our recruiting class, I’m not too worried about it. At this point we’re adding depth and future players. I don’t want to say it’s a down year but the talent we grabbed last year seems to be far superior to the ones we’re losing out of. One guy that doesn’t fit that mold is Hale as I don’t think we have a shot at but is gonna start somewhere in his freshman year. If we grab either Graham or Baldwin then DiLillo isn’t a big loss.

[…] Yesterday at the end of the post about Clermond having charges against him dropped, I was going to rip the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. They were the first media outlet to report the story of his arrest back on July 24 when Paul Zeise broke the story on the P-G’s website. And when it was published online, they put it in REALLY BIG LETTERS at the top of the page. So I was a little curious as to why it took them so long to put up the story of his release from the charges. Does the Post-Gazette have some sort of anti-Pitt agenda? (Gasp!) […]
