I noted last week that Pitt was very much in favor of scoring first. In fact, in every game this season Pitt has scored first. The first quarter, especially has been very high octane for Pitt.

Whatever their motivation, the Panthers certainly are on the same page come game time. Pitt (6-1, 2-0 Big East) is off to its best start in 24 years, largely because it has outscored opponents, 76-3, in the first quarter this season.

“It’s very difficult to maintain the intensity that these guys have,” Wannstedt said. “We haven’t had a game, including the one we lost to Michigan State, where we’ve come out of the tunnel and our guys have been flat. We’ve come out smoking.

Our guys are coming out, and they’re mentally focused. We’re coming out emotional. You can’t play this game at the level you need to play it at unless you’re emotionally ready to play. We can’t wait to see how good they are or how ready they are and react to that.”

Rutgers has been similar in the fast start approach.

When it comes to fast starts, the Panthers aren’t alone. Rutgers has outscored opponents, 48-7 in the first quarter and 44-0 in the third quarter.

Pitt’s scoring by quarter: 76-3; 69-29; 74-31; 44-30. Total 263-93.

Rutgers’s scoring by qtr: 48-7; 68-24; 44-0;  30-19.  Total 190-50.

This fast and often scoring has been a pleasant surprise. Last year especially Pitt seemed to come out flat and lose confidence early. Not the case this year. And most importantly, these guys are playing hard for a full 60 minutes. The young guys are getting a chance to play at the end of these games and they arent wasting their opportunities. I am amazed at the points we are putting up. Have we ever had a strecth like this under Walt?

I really hope we can get a nice crowd for Rutgers. No excuses this time the game is at 6pm and its homecoming which should bring in a lot of alumni from out of town. We need a packed house!

We have to win this game. No excuses, Rutgers does not have better talent and they embarassed us last year. If we beat win, then I will officially forget about the Notre Dame debacle last year. Let’s go PITT!!

Don’t underestimate Rutgers. Their defense is actually better than their offense.

I will be there, the only thing im wondering, what gives with the 5:45 kickoff? I know they are looking for the nationally telivised audience and everything, but 5:45. Who came up with that obscure time?

5:45 fits somewhat nicely between the 3rd quarter of the 3:30 games and before the start of the second quarter in the 8:00 games. perfect time! hey, at least you have extra time to get to the game/tailgate

I’m looking forward to this game. I was just happy to get to go becuase it will be my first one this year but now I’m doubly excited becuase it actually means something as well.

Best case scenario: We win, but Rutgers stays in the top 25. That’d mean the BE HAS 4 teams in the top 25, two in the top 10. Fingers are crossed.

Re: the 5:45 kickoff – well, at least the game is not presented by 7-Eleven, if you know what I mean.
