Some General Stuff

I’ve said all I care to about the whole mouse trap thing that Coach Wannstedt handed out to starters. I don’t think I’d be bothered by it so much if it wasn’t for the fact that I’ll have to hear the lousy ESPN booth talk about it.

Now that the beat writers for Big East schools have done enough stories on WVU, Louisville and then Rutgers, Pitt is getting it’s turn.

This season has been a much different story as Pitt is off to a 5-1 start, 2-0 in the Big East. A win Friday night in Orlando against Central Florida makes the program bowl eligible. The future also looks bright as Pitt has the Big East’s highest-rated incoming recruiting class in 2007.

Pitt plays its last five games in the Big East after the trip to Central Florida. And while the jury may still be out, it’s starting to look like the verdict is that Pitt has a bright future under Wannstedt.

So, despite the BCS win WVU still can’t outrecruit Pitt?

Interested to see how the next few years will pan out….will our new athletes take us to the top of the Big East and a yearly top 10 program or will this program still be mired in the 30-40s for division 1A?

I would probably agree that WVU can’t outrecruit Pitt but then again they don’t need to because they can outcoach us.

Let’s leave the jury out on WVU being able to out coach us for a couple years. WVU’s coaching staff does pretty well with the talent they have – and are good at getting the best out of their players, but DW has done a good job coaching also. He has turned this program around in some ways that might be more important that just wins & losses… local stars wanting to play here & local HS coaches feeling part of the future of PITT, team cohesion, general PITT pride, etc. As far as his X & O coaching goes, I don’t presume to know the intricacies of game planning, but have to say that he has used Palko in a way that makes him more efficient than Harris ever did, and our line play – thought to be a negative on both sides of the ball, has been coached into one of our strengths. And, we are getting quality college level play out of a lot of true freshmen and redshirted freshman – that’s the result of putting people when they can do the most good, and letting the play up to their abilities.

Not to take anything away from WVU, but PITT coaching is strong in its own right.

I see a very healthy coaching situation at Pitt. There appears to be a real leader at the top who is growing his assistant coaches. Every coach is getting better. They are confident and running their business. The X and O’s are actually getting real interesting. As is the game philosophy. They appear to be having fun. From a management perspective, it looks real good to me. The players are picking up on it and seem fully engaged. We all need to stop
knocking the coaches and go get four other fans out to the games.
