Morning News Blitz

I have a lot to do before game time.

With all that has happened, getting satellite was delayed. Unfortunately, the cable hook-up in the new/temp place won’t be until Tuesday. Instead I bribed a friend to let me hijack his TV for the day. In return, I bought Gameplan for the day for them (so I can see the Pitt-Syracuse game) and a 12 of Newcastle. I’ll be live blogging the Pitt game for AOL, then doing more liveblogging of the rest of the CFB action from about 3:30 to 6:30. I really need the cyberpunk era to get to reality so I can just jack the computer directly into the base of my skull and be done with it.
Burning Chrome By William Gibson

Since that hasn’t happened yet, maybe I should just do a weekly “host the homeless blogger” thing where I travel to people’s houses glomming off their broadband, commandeering their TV and becoming the houseguest from hell.

Either way, time is a little short so I’m just going to do the links quickly. By the way, you can look at all the Q&A between the ‘Cuse blogger and I through this link (it’s given me the excuse to seek and post photos of old Pitt unis from the Getty archives).
Lots out of Syracuse and upstate NY for this game. Not so much from the ‘Burgh.

Base, simple preview from the Trib. The P-G is about how Syracuse’s improvements from last year to this, to a large degree mirror Pitt.

Syracuse football players like to visit men in prison.

Some are thinking bowl for the ‘Cuse if they win.

More talk about how Syracuse gets a lot of sacks.

Finally, the ‘Cuse are still talking payback for the entire last season of winless ineptitude in the Big East. A bit of respect for Palko though from their lineman.

Syracuse linebacker K.J. Smith said Palko reminds him of Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. He said Palko was quieter last year at Heinz Field. But two years ago at the Carrier Dome, Smith said Palko talked plenty of smack with former SU safety Anthony Smith, who now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith called it, funny.

“He’s a tough dude,” said Smith, who is No. 2 in the Big East in tackles behind Pittsburgh’s H.B. Blades. “I respect his game. I like his game. I like to play against a quarterback like that. You can look at him and you know he’s ready to play. Not many other quarterbacks do that – look a linebacker in the face and know what it is.”

What kills me in the article is it talks about how Syracuse wants to take away Pitt’s run and make them pass. That’s what Pitt already does.

Pitt wins 21-17

where the F*CK IS CONREDGE COLLINS & WHY the F*CK are we running LaRod on a 3rd and SHORT (-1yd) — wasn’t the whole idea to get the ball into the hands of the “bigger-stronger” back in these situations? What a way to close the 1st Q.

Excuse the explitives but that kind of play calling is just bewildering. Time to start break out the bottle…

Comment by Neil 10.07.06 @ 12:51 pm

1 punt for Graessle, 9 yards.

Just beautiful…

Comment by Dennis 10.07.06 @ 1:14 pm

Well, I shocked, shocked I say, at Stephens-Howling’s rushing totals at half – great to see, but you kind of have to wonder where the hell it came from.

Bummed about losing Kinder for the game, and I’d like to see more vertical passes in the second half. The only long pass I can remember is the onr try to Strong at the end of the half.

????s:

Is Del Sardo dressed and how did Dickerson get his 10 yards on one rush – trick play?

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.07.06 @ 1:38 pm

Yeah, Palko lined up at wide receiver and they snapped the ball directly to Dickerson.

Comment by Jeff 10.07.06 @ 1:51 pm

Thanks. I guess Kinder didn’t have a concussion as was reported by Bill & Bill on the radio (if you haven’t heard them do a game live it’s kind of an exercise in surrealism). Maybe we’ll see some downfield action to Kinder this half.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.07.06 @ 1:55 pm

anyone else sick of the hype HB gets? the guy is good, not great as he is advertised. missed tackles, soft hits, etc. he should be more like buster davis from FSU if you ask me, he is talented enough. no one seems to agree with me!

Comment by DJ 10.07.06 @ 2:02 pm

mcgee has done a great job today, nice to see someone other than kinder do something. no offense to turner, but he’s the reincarnation of todd pinkston/greg lee, just a soft SOB

Comment by Phil 10.07.06 @ 2:20 pm

“Palko is playing the Syracuse defense like a violin virtuoso! – Is that Isaac Perelman or Tyler Palko?!” – Bill Hillgrove’s call after Buche’s catch in the end zone.

Like I said – surreal.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.07.06 @ 2:25 pm

Was Sallet injured?

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.07.06 @ 2:52 pm

Where was Eric Thatcher? Didn’t see him on TV at all – Mike Phillips was always in.

Why did LaRod have to get all the carries? Not to complain – was it a case of “it’s working”?

Comment by Kevin 10.07.06 @ 3:20 pm

There must have been some personnel issues – Thatcher wasn’t in much, and Carter played a lot at CB (gave up TD).

Good game though – and I though our defense did well, but gave up a lot of yards, w/little scoring.

Would like to have seen DW go for the TD at the end of the game – wonder if that was professional courtesy on his part? Would have been good to get some short yardage snaps in – we need work on the short yardage situations.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.07.06 @ 3:27 pm

It was hardly imagination at work, Kevin. Nor was it remotely helpful to the underclassmen who need carry the ball (i.e., Collins, Collier, & esp. Dickerson (man-oh-man does Dorin look like a killer, or what?… really an almost perfectly proportioned athlete IMO.)) So DW / Cav. cont. to drive fans like me absolutely CRAZY. I mean, I can’t get sadistic on either, but at the same time, friends, I DO NOT understand the sheer MIS-USE of some VERY talented players who could certainly become/develop into “contributors” with more carries/playing-time. Once more, it’s terrific[!] to see a Panther team WINNING the games they are in fact supposed to win. BUT, I can’t help be pissed a bit by game management in these circumstances presented to the team today — OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND — because the under-use and now-certain inexperience of key personnel (present/future) will bite us in the ass in the 2nd half; the pivitol games that will determine the season at large.

CONC: good day for LaRod and I’m happy for him, but he cannot ever be productive as an every-down back, and when he is, it gets embarrassing to me watch a talent laden recruiting class burn redshirts for one (1) carry per gm. —

Bur it’s a win and nice 5-1.

Comment by Neil 10.07.06 @ 3:38 pm

Thatcher was hurt in practice (high ankle sprain) He did not dress for the game today.

Comment by Panthervision 10.07.06 @ 3:40 pm

Hope he’s good for next game – Thatcher is a good one, Sallet also.

Agree it’s frustrating about the other RBs not getting touches. It probably was a no-win situation for DW to take the ball out of LaRod’s hands. We didn’t have a big enough lead to spread the carries around to the others, and if he had and it didn’t work out, he would have been criticized for not giving it to the RB that was breaking big ones. Freshman are getting playing time though, Thomas did well, Matthews did well, etc… Burning the redshirts don’t bother me, we’re still in the position to use playing as a freshman as a major recruiting tool, and to do that we have to play those that we used that incentive with.

As a fan, I want to see Dickerson get some actual (no gimmick) carries, and I still think we need to get the ball in Collin’s hands – especially in short yardage situations.

It seems like we are missing tackles on D also. Luckily we have been able to get leads and hold them to make up for this. Doing well on turnovers and not allowing sacks still.

We are in a good position for the second half of the season though – and bottom line – 5-1 looks pretty darn good right now – including wins in both road games.

DW is 10-7 so far at PITT, not too bad and will get better. Over and over the players have talked about everyone buying into DW’s coaching and approach to teamwork, and that has shown good results this year, so I hesitate to critize the coaching decisions too much.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.07.06 @ 3:57 pm

Hey guys just looking for your opinion here. I wasn’t able to watch the game but had the ESPN Gamecast on my PC.

Over the years I have watched Palko play and I am always left wondering–Can this kid be a success on Sundays? I know he can suit up and be on a team, but I can’t determine whether what he does is Montana-esque (you know not a super strong arm ut a great field general)or if he is just a great college QB (ala Pitt’s OC Cavanaugh).

Just wanted to get some of your guys opinions since being out here on the left coast I can’t see as many games as I would like to 🙁

Comment by DaveD 10.07.06 @ 4:00 pm

I’m a bit baffled by some of the comments on here. WE WON THE GAME! In a tough stadium to play in where we have had little success. Stephens-Howling is the starter. Not surprised that he got the majority of the carries. So what if the backups got little field time. The starters are starters for a reason. If they’re healthy — you play them, unless the game is way out of reach. I thought it was a nice win. Would have liked to see them hold Cuse to a field goal, but Pitt never let them back into the game after that late TD.

Comment by jc 10.07.06 @ 4:10 pm

By the way — I believe Collins got two short yardage carries on the goal line and was stuffed twice. I agree that Collins is a great option in short yardadge situations, but lets not act like he didn’t get a chance today.

Comment by jc 10.07.06 @ 4:15 pm

10 pt win does not sum up our dominance today. This was the future face of Pitt football–a dominating running game, controlling the clock, almost flawless QB play, taking advantage of what the D gave them, and lets not forget that we stopped their run today. Who cares about red-shirts–the kids are happier if they get to play, and we are going to keep getting good players who want to play right away if they can. I did not see the MSU game-but was discouraged by what I heard about it but even though we are not playing OHIO ST–we seem to have improved a good bit from that game. Here in Rochester,NY SU fans fully expected to run on Pitt, and win this game.
we have now stopped the run in all but 1 game–and that is very encouraging.Looks like we are on the way back–should be bowl bound, and if our OL plays like that (1 sack, almost no pressure all day) things will be very interesting for the rest of the year.

Comment by tph60 10.07.06 @ 4:34 pm

DaveD -I think that in the system Cavanaugh is using Palko could be a great NFL QB – he’s showing a really quick delivery and a very smart head, today especially. Pitt went with a very quick short-yardage pass system, using lots of WR screens on the sideline. Cuse was playing against the deep pass and Pitt obliged, especially good cause it didn’t let Cuse’s pass rush get to Palko. He also had 2 or 3 good headsy runs.

Comment by Kevin 10.07.06 @ 4:43 pm

Damn man, by reading these comments, I would have thought we lost today. You want something to be exited about? If you’ve paid any attention at all to Pitt football in the last 10+ years, you know that our coaches in that time never grasped the concept of protecting the QB. Didn’t see the game (listened on yahoo) but the fact we don’t get sacked every 4 downs or so is great. I don’t have a problem giving it to LaRod when he is getting 10 yards a carry……but he is going to get hurt, need to spread it around.
Oh, and Penn State sucks by the way.

Comment by JC 10.07.06 @ 5:31 pm

Interesting choice Dave made 2 or 3 times, punting the ball as opposed to going for a field goal. If you noticed each time Dave could have attempted the kick, it would have been about 45-50 yards, but we punted instead….is Conor hurt, or is it more about not putting the kid in a bad position?

Comment by Marco 10.07.06 @ 5:57 pm

Believe the choice to punt was more of a reliance on our defense and a conservative approach then not trusting Connor to make the FG.

Am very happy we won today, and my earlier posts may not reeflect that, but should have. We played very well and did just what we needed to do, not only to win, but I think to strengthen the team for the harder part of the schedule. I am most impressed with the way DW has these kids taking every game seriously, and playing until the end of the game. Maybe it helps that the majority of our players are underclassmen and can get behind DW’s approach. Whatever it is – I’m very glad the way the games have gone and impressed at this point.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.07.06 @ 7:44 pm

Tyler Palko deserves Heisman consideration. His passing was superb, his runs were nice and did you see his fakes and bootlegs? Had the ‘cuse on their heels all day.

Comment by steve 10.07.06 @ 7:49 pm

Any guess as to when this team will get ranked?….I guess we’re going to have to win two more games before they rank us…?

Comment by Marco 10.07.06 @ 8:13 pm

I mean two more consecutive wins…say 7-1 before we crack the top 25.

Comment by Marco 10.07.06 @ 8:14 pm

I will agree that it was disturbing that we didn’t put up any more points today, BUT, I think some of that was b/c Wanny could tell Syracuse wasn’t going to score much. The D was pretty tough today. Bottom line is that we were considerably better than that team today. Their fantastic D-Line got killed by our youngsters. Joe Thomas is really going to be good, BTW.

You also could’ve called a hold on the Cuse O-Line virtually on every play. We totally dominated these guys.

Frankly, we pick up that early 4th and 1…man, I do not know what happened on that one…and its a blowout. But really, not once did I ever think Syracuse was going to put it together and win the game.

Comment by RWill 10.07.06 @ 9:49 pm

One thing to remember – Pitt took a knee at the end of the game on the 4. It could have been a wider spread. Penn State indeed sux – Joepa better not diss Big 10 refs again as they handed him the game. But the most amusing thing of the day – at the end of the Stanford/ND game, 4th and 2, Stanford drops back for a long pass attempt and gets sacked – for the 20th time in the PAST 3 GAMES according to the announcers. I don’t miss that at all. Or the quick kick they displayed last week against UCLA. Or the QB slide to set up a field goal they displayed against Navy.

Comment by Kevin 10.07.06 @ 10:14 pm

It always warms my heart when we be the ‘Cuse, ESPECIALLY when we’re on the road. That’s because 1. we rarely win at the Carrier Dome and 2. that school is a vile snakepit of shallow, self-involved East Coast brats that couldn’t make into the “baby Ivies” (e.g. Bucknell) much less any of the Ivies themselves. It’s the same warm, fuzzy sensation that Big 12 alums must get when their school smacks around Colorado, I imagine.

Not that I’ve a bitter streak. ;)…

Comment by Shawn 10.07.06 @ 11:24 pm

Regarding the missed 4th & 1 early in the game…DW said in the post-game interview that the play calls for the QB to go into the line in a low dive and Palko went in pretty much straight up – which gave the ‘Cuse D the ability to stand him up and stop it. As I didn’t see the game I don’t know but the radio announcer (Bill Fralic) picked up on that right away. Speaking of Fralic – he is very high on the PITT O line and very much optimistic that it will only get better in the next few years. He said that in the pre-game interviews DW predicted a big game w/ some long gainers from LaRod, and Fralic thinks we’ll see more of those type of runs this season. I hope so, nothing better that to be proven wrong (my thoughts on LaRod as an every down back) in a positive way.

Also, the radio announcers put the one sack on Palko for not getting rid of the ball out of bounds instead of taking the sack. I believe their point was that the O line could have gone all game without giving up a sack to the team leading the nation in sacks.

Still want to see what Dickerson can do on carries out of the backfield though. UCF game is on TV here in Maryland so I’ll get a chance to actually watch the Panthers again. I’m thinking 6-1 going into Rutgers and if we can pull out a win there we pretty much have to be voted into the top 25. Not too many lower echelon top 25 teams lost this weekend for us to move up.

To any fan wanting to complain about something:

Think about last year and how at this point. Miserable.

Enjoy. This is fun. The team has to start somewhere and winning 5 of 6 games isn’t a bad place to start.

Call a PSU fan and rub it in.

Comment by Keith 10.08.06 @ 6:36 am

Any idea where to find any game highlight videos on the internet?

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.08.06 @ 8:02 am

Comment by Chris 10.08.06 @ 9:32 am

No doubt this was a good win, this team is building more confidence every week, you can see it in the way they play.

A few things noticabley different from last year:

It seems like we are getting a lot more sacks and putting more presure on opposing qb’s

Palko is not running for his life

Receivers are making the tough catches and breaking big plays

The secondary has been lights out this year.

Pitt has put themselves in a great position at the midpoint of the season. Its not unthinkable that we could be 9-1 heading into the last 2 games, which are both at home. I would love to see this young team really start rolling into those last two weeks of the season.

F penn st

I actually got a headache watching that ridiculous call.

Comment by Rex 10.08.06 @ 9:43 am

Thanks for the video link – much more impressive to see it than to hear it. No wonder they call LaRod the Johnstown Jet – he looks like he was shot out of a cannon on the 70 yarder.

Also, in the video voice-over, Lou Holtz’s comments to Mark May about this PITT O Line being “much better than the ones in the ’70s” is priceless.

Comment by Reed Kohberger 10.08.06 @ 10:29 am

May’s best years were the 80’s, sorry Lou.

May’s best years were the early 80’s, sorry Lou.

A few thoughts:

1) Stanford is 0-6 for the first time in 20 years. Thanks Walt!

2) We are beating inferior teams.

3) We are doing OK in a rebuilding year.

4} Palko most likely will play on Sundays.

5) Holtz owns May!

6) Enjoy this team whether they win or lose because whatever happens the rest of the season Walt Harris coaches Stanford.
