It Goes In As A Win

Sorry about the quiet today. Moving out of the hotels into an apartment for a few months until everything is taken care of at the house. (Not the way I expected to spend Rosh Hashana, but what can you do — at least Pitt’s tradition of scheduling a home game during at least one High Holy Day continues.) So, no chance to listen to the audio of a satisfying rout.

Look, I wish Pitt wasn’t playing 1-AA teams. I don’t think there is a fan of any legit 1-A team that likes to see a 1-AA opponent on the schedule. I’m not about to stop railing against them and ripping on them when I see them on the schedule. That said, Pitt did what it was supposed to. Destroyed them. Took them apart, made sure the game was fully salted away, and got the starters out by the end of the 3d quarter.

There’s not much to really discuss about this game, given the quality of the opponent. I’m more of the opinion expressed by H.B. Blades.

“My mind is on Toledo now.”

“We can’t underestimate a MAC (conference) school (like Toledo). They have talent and we need to be focused on details.”

Was it really 3 whole years ago since Pitt lost to Toledo 35-31? It wasn’t even televised, but that loss still haunts me — that and the fact that Lee’s wedding was that night and it was bone dry.

I remember telling people in the elevator up to the seventh floor of Lothrop that Pitt lost to Toledo that night, broken and upset. That was awful.

My emotions that year during that three-week stretch were so yo-yo. First, the loss to Toledo, which didn’t hurt as much because it wasn’t televised, but still stung bad. But then we went to A+M and beat them up good, which bolstered my confidence big time. Then the first game my dad came to with me at Pitt, that awful loss to ND. Yeah, at that point, I was so up and down, every week with this team…it was tiring.

Meh, in other news, good game today, I guess. It was nice to have a football weekend where I didn’t have to worry about Pitt probably losing. But then I thought about that Furman game…which is when I decided to take a walk, which was probably the best idea anyway.

That’s as good a post as
I can remember..

Happy New Years Chas. Hope all is well and everything works out for the best.

Only 30,000 showed up – not big time football fans. Good football schools drawn regardless of their record and who the opponent is.

Check out Palko’s stats so far – rated #1 in the nation after four games. Note Getsky at # 71 and Morelli down in the 80s.

Kinder’s top ranked also.

Wonderful to watch my old…literally….high school classmate Chuck Amato and NC State beat despised BC last night. He’s on the hot seat there.

Pitt doesn’t have a student body of 40,000+ on their main campus Mark. That’s a huge reason why many “Good Football schools” draw a large crowd.

Mark, you are an idiot

Comment by Rex 09.24.06 @ 9:29 am

Mark, there were more than 30K people there yesterday….closer to 40K…….Give it time folks, Pitt has only been winning for the past 4-5 years consistently…we were down for 10……and we still haven’t posted a 10 win season since former President Reagan was in office…so let’s be realistic, they will come when we win……and PSUcks fans will leave once they start to lose…

Comment by Marco 09.24.06 @ 10:08 am

from what i understand pitt never sold out pitt stadium back when they were winning 10+ unless psu or nd was in town. pittsburgh is a steelers town (one of the reasons i hate the city) and that wont change. plus its Fairweather U, most of the students will go while the weather is nice but once it gets cold and pitt loses a few, forget it.

but on the plus side, this is the not the walt harris era, where we have to sweat out games vs 1-AA schools. wanny beat that team just like he should have. hail to pitt.

Name a city school that consistently draws sellout crowds. I can name 0. The only reason PSU and them sell out every time is there is nothing else to do.

Comment by JC 09.24.06 @ 10:55 am

Sorry I should have said a city school that hasn’t done a whole lot in the last 30 years.

I think we could all agree that 1. yes, our turn out sucks… and 2. it will get better if we do that one thing that answers everything: win, win and win some more. That national attention and ranking can do wonders for a program.

Fans support winning teams…call me fair weather, but I would much rather pay big bucks and spend my precious weekend time supporting a winner and be entertained in the process. It also helps being the focal point that weekend instead of sharing it with a professional team. Pitt is blessed and cursed at the same time.

The MSU-ND game showed me that Pitt has the talent to be a top 25 team. What Pitt is currently missing is they confidence that winning brings. ND never gave up on winning, after being blown way for 3 quarters, because they are expected to win. Pitt gave up against MSU because they do not believe they could win once they got behind. Regardless of the problems with defensive coaching, Pitt fans leaving in the third quarter (as they did at the MSU game) reinforces a losing tradition. Yesterday, Pitt was expected to win and they did so very efficiently and will do so against Toledo (a game I would never schedule because even if you win-you lose) as long as they do not get behind and have to watch their fans desert them. Pitt will be for real once they come from behind to win a game that they are not expected to win.

Not only does Pitt not have 40,000+ on campus now, it hasn’t been cranking out tens of thousands of alums each year for the past 50 years, like most “big time” programs have.

Kids that choose Pitt did so knowing that it is a city school, and not a rah-rah “lets see how many frat boys we can cram into a phone booth” type school, like PSU. If a kid wasn’t a fan of the football team as an undergrad, then they probably won’t care enough to go to the games as an alum. It’s also a problem that the team is now off campus, and Pitt games no longer have a college atmosphere.

Couple that with the Steelers gobbling up all the locals who like football but don’t have ties to Pitt, that explains the lack of fan support.

Remember, Penn State doesn’t play I-AA schools. Therefore, we will never know how many people would attend a Penn State v Citadel game. This game never should have been scheduled. Pitt should have taken a (financial) loss and played a real team on the road. As much as I hate Penn State, you have to give them credit for packing their high school stadium with 100,000 people, most of whom had to travel at least 2 hours to get there. How many Pitt fans travel that far to attend a game?

“Remember, Penn State doesn’t play I-AA schools.”

Um, whaddya call YSU?

Also, I’d like to see PSU take on Cinci right now. I don’t think it’d be one of those cakewalks that JoePa scheduled 20 years ago.
