While I’m liveblogging the Sun Bowl, I have the DVR recording the start of Pitt’s Big East Conference. I’ll be watching the basketball game after Pitt-Oregon State. The stories of the day are rather stock as you would expect with the distraction of the Sun Bowl. There’s the opening of conference play for Pitt — along with sidebar story with the Big East Associate Commissioner spinning that they couldn’t do any adjustments to the time of the Pitt-Rutgers game. Right. No changes are possible unless ESPN says so. Then, of course, there is the whole payback/not taking anything lightly storyline.

Feel free to talk about the basketball game here.

They better wake up

Wow Gilbert taking over…love it, still a 15-12 hole though

25-22 Pitt…time to put the clamps on em

Comment by Hollywood 12.31.08 @ 2:28 pm

34-34 close to the half…we are just a mediocre road team the last couple of years

Comment by Hollywood 12.31.08 @ 2:41 pm

43-39 deficit at the half…completely unacceptable to give up that many, Blair better avoid any more fouls

Comment by Hollywood 12.31.08 @ 2:54 pm

looking worse and worse….terrible D all day…
Pitt not even playing like a top 20 team!

Comment by dan 72 12.31.08 @ 3:28 pm

Blair is getting fucked on foul calls

Comment by Hollywood 12.31.08 @ 3:32 pm

Is this game being shown online anywhere, for those of us broadcast-challenged?

2-3 zone by Dixon is an admission we are in trouble

Comment by dan 72 12.31.08 @ 3:36 pm

At least wanamaker and Bigs are stepping up!

Comment by Palm Beach Panther 12.31.08 @ 3:40 pm

Is the zone D doing any good? Why wasn’t the man-man working?

Comment by Colt Convert 12.31.08 @ 3:42 pm

Clutch three by Brad…great game by him thus far

Comment by Hollywood 12.31.08 @ 3:46 pm

Zone D hasn’t stopped Rutgers….the subs playing the zone D have! Dixon relying on our deep bench…starters have been awful…stay w. the subs.

Comment by dan 72 12.31.08 @ 3:47 pm

Where did Wannamaker come from with all the threes? Great stuff!

Comment by Colt Convert 12.31.08 @ 3:50 pm

So can Pitt preserve a 9-point lead with 1:48 remaining?

Comment by Colt Convert 12.31.08 @ 3:56 pm

You can really see how effective the difference in free-throw shooting is here, at the end of the game. By Pitt standards, they’re not doing badly, but Rutgers is giving themselves a chance here.

Comment by Colt Convert 12.31.08 @ 4:08 pm

Gilbert off the bench in the 1st half, and Bradley in the 2nd half — very promising.

The good news is that Pitt won a close game with Blair in foul trouble; the bad news is that once again Blair got in foul trouble (on the road.)

who is s brown? or did the box score give the points from some one else (gil) to s brown incorrectly?

Comment by Kurt 12.31.08 @ 4:37 pm

Big win today, adversity and all. Winning without Blair is big. BIggs come thru with 10 boards is huge for Pitt. Shooting wasnt bad at all. Matter of fact it was good. We held Rutgers to 30% shooting in 2nd half after a 60 in the first half. The zone seemed to do the trick, less driving and cutting to the hoop.
But we will get the test on Sat. GTown away. We will see how good we are then for sure.

Comment by buzz 12.31.08 @ 5:39 pm

Blair played all of 8 minutes; 2 pts and 2 rebounds.

This will no doubt contribute greatly to at least a couple of Pitt losses this year

Just got back from the Rutgers game. Jamie made excellent adjustmnts at the 1/2 to clamp down on the Rutgers shooters, Wannamaker really stepped up in this game. If we get that kind of performance from him all year we will be in great shape. Sloppy D first half, but we made up for it in the second half. There was good turnout of Pitt fans at the game and we forced Rutgers student section into action multiple times to drown us out. Hoping for an equally good turnout at GT. I’ll be there.

Back from the bkb game, a very good decision to go especially after watching the 2nd half of the fb game at a bar. Was the wind ablowin’ in El Paso? I hope so.

Dixon employing the zone was the gamebreaker. And, with our bench strength, it will indeed be possible to win without Blair.

This will be the last time you will see Rosario in a one-on-one matchup.

Hail to Pitt (hoops), where it’s at and where it will be. Hell, we can get 10 players who can play the basketball game, why aren’t we able to find 11 guys for a half decent offensive fb team?

P.S. The RU crowd was unusually civil given a larger than average Pitt contingent in the stands.

Note to the SEC: TMGPanther and I did not collude.

Comment by steve 12.31.08 @ 6:24 pm

At least this day didn’t totally suck. The hoops team has what our football team can only dream of. Great coaching, passion for the game, and a desire to do wahtever it takes to win.
